When James May bought a new Tesla Model S, the internet had some good things, but mostly lots of bad things to say about his new vehicle choice. While on his lunch break from filming, he decided to take a look at the comments section of his Tesla reveal video to see what the audience had come up with.

For your information james, and drive tribe, I've retired bottom gear because of the same reasons james gave in this video. it was getting samey and i feel absolutely honored to have let such a series of videos have come to life. it's also thanks to you guys being really open about memes and allowing it all this time. thank you and i love you all!

Always was a pleasure opening KZhead and seeing another one of your new Bottom Gear vids pop up. Here's to new series' in 2022.
i’ll driñcc to that
James is savage without even trying. I love his humour
its not humour its him, jesus
+Roan O'Connor As a German, one thing the Brits will always be better at than us is Humor and Banter. There is a Reason why back in the Day when Monty Python was new, it was #1 in Comedy TV Ratings (for several years) and far ahead of any German "Comedian". Now in the 2020s our Top TV Channels still air Monty Python, Black Adder etc. around Christmas Holidays and still have the best Ratings because of it. When it comes to Humor the Brits just remain unbeaten Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

I didn't get this meme until I actually read the format in a comment. Now that's really funny
James saying that the Bottom Gears are “getting a bit same-y” implies that he hasn’t just seen the first one, but has seen every installment at least once.

I want to reiterate a comment reviewed in this video. A lot of people enjoy these videos more than they enjoy traditional television or television shows I've been a fan of James, Richard and the Orangatan since Top Gear and I still watch Top Gear reruns. Lucy is doing an absolutely fantastic job on this channel. Just do what she says James and we'll all be okay!
The fact that Ben had to explain the meme to James makes this even funnier
James' deconstruction of it is bang on
He didn't understand why it was supposed to be funny, the guy just explained that it actually isn't funny
@Goldy Twatus I feel like the original intent of the statement was to convey an actual point not to be a funny meme. The actual point as explained in the video being that nobody was asking for something and then one person or group of people then deliver or make said thing nobody was asking for. Then just like any game of telephone the message got repeated through so many people that the original meaning of it gets lost.

It would be fun to watch but, spoiler alert, already been done. I did 2 trips NC to CA in my 2016 model S. Driven it about 45k miles never ran out of juice once. After you have one for a bit you realize its not an issue.

Lucy is afraid of making James mad, even when he gave her permission. I think James probably has been toughened up after taking years of guff from Hammond and Clarkson, and being in the public eye. Get some guts Lucy! And if James fires you later, I'm sorry you took my advice.
James has always struck me as the sensible one of the trio.
Probably some editing magic involved
He's the only one that went to school and actually took the classes.
Hello Lloyd how are you doing. I hope you're doing fine and having a nice weather.
Love hearing from you old guys. 🤣You will always get a watch and a thumbs up for me.
James May should definitely review his watch collection. I think he missed the point, however. The interesting part is the story behind each one - why he chose them.
James, why don't you review the cars of Clarkson and Hammond owned in the past, in separate videos? 🤔
I had also looked at a cross-country trip using Tesla's trip planner. While on the whole it seemed doable, there are places where charging is still an issue. For example, I had hoped to go northwest from Ogallala, Nebraska, following the old Oregon Trail, then across Wyoming on US-26 to Grand Teton and Yellowstone. When I put all that in, the driving time was almost double what it would be in a petrol car, not because of charging time, but because there are no chargers along that route other than in Casper, WY, but the distance from Casper to Grand Teton is too close to a full charge; rerouting to be able to charge is close to three times the distance. So the problem is not so much being able to make the trip, but at this point, taking a more scenic, less traveled route with less charging infrastructure. I did notice that Electrify America has a few stations planned along there, so that may help in the future, but even then it is a bit tenuous.
A simple maths challenge for James - 2 key components - 1. Acceptable charge speed for EVs as this class of vehicle dominates total registered vehicles 2.The Disappearance of Gas powered Power Stations from the Grid Network. The ONLY Power Generating system that can respond to sudden power surges are Gas fired. Smart networks are unable to cater for the hard to forecast sudden demands on the Grid that are likely to cause frequent blackouts. Investment in sufficient Power generating stations to defend the essential grid balance when 10% of UKs EVs plug in to fast chargers (assumption 50% will demand 175 KWh charging & 50% will employ 350KWh chargers. UK has a total vehicle pop. of 32 million vehicles. NOW consider the Surge defence infrastructure to avoid Blackouts. The surge defence must prevent network failures and the requirements must be conservative - so we are only considering 10% of EVs will demand high speed charging. Total estimated maximum power surge demand - 787,500 MWh New Surge protection - Construction of 1,313 new 600MWh Power stattions Cost of Construction (not incl. operation costs) - $394 billion Annual amortised cost to be borne by EV owners using fast charge equipment - $39.38 billion to be shared among 3 million users. These costs would be halved if Gas fired generators were maintained. I prefer Gas - Natural Gas or Hydrogen.
Indicator noise is a common conversation subject from my experience. Keep up the great work.
James May is the most interesting Boring man on TV. I love how he cares about little details and isn’t afraid to go into real examples. As far as I’m concerned he’s the best one from TG/GT. James May absolute Legend😁😁
James should get one of those robotic Honda lawn mowers he'd love that
I love that you gave credit to where it’s due with nuggety! Not enough people do that top top man👍🏻👍🏻
When I was a child my father had a Toyota Crown, I loved the sound of the indicator in that, and the little blue high beam warning light on the dashboard. Strangely fond memories.
James was always my favourite on TG & now GT show
Would love to see a video of the trio talking about programs and films they've wanted to make but couldn't!
Still waiting for that "Speed of Birds" tv show... Lol
Enjoy these types of videos so much, always makes me laugh!
Holy cow Masako X watches Drive Tribe! Anyway, James has that smooth radio voice that's probably why people get relaxed at his presentations.
Yes yes the flashing indicator stalk, I think my parents Austin 1800 had them. I loved the sound the indicators or blinkers as they were called then made.
My 1958 moggy had them
I've seen your Alpine in person and I have to say it is a really nice car to look at. Photos don't do it justice
James May is a natural presenter with a love of Cars. What's there not to like? Great video, I'm now about to what his video on his new Mirai 🙂
Ah, the satisfying tick of an Austin indicator. Such a beautiful, rich green glow and gentle flash. The one in my mini was the same as that in mums Austin. Rather startlingly, the keys were interchangeable as well. LOL!
James is a living meme and we're here for it.
Both a living meme and an excellent presenter. Doing well in long format and short formats. I know I couldn’t stand in front of a camera to save my life so it’s pretty neat!
I believe it’s James’ mother’s curtains because Jeremy once said that he was wearing them on Top Gear (I think when they did the German track day saloons)
I believe the quote from Jeremy was "That's like saying 'Who is the fastest Top Gear presenter? It's James May because he is wearing his mother's curtains!'"
Yes the Oompah band said Hammond’s M3 was the most spacious because it’s from Bavaria 😂
Hi
Everytime I see James I keep wondering what he thinks about car trek. And keep wondering when we will se the trio back again... I do suggest that James makes one video a week so we dont need to wait so long for next one :) I really enjoy watching him.
James. Thank you. Too all your work on Top Gear, The Grand Tour. And many other successful adventures you have done. Forgive me if you haven't already. But a tour or run down of your motorcycles, would be a treat. Cheers mate.
Keep giving him the nice comments Lucy, it makes me laugh everytime he's disappointed.
James May: Complains. Everyone else: Listening or complaining that he complains. Me:...... Hoping he reads my comment😁
Hey he read mine in the last one, so there’s always a chance
Going through James' watches would indeed be interesting! I have found that a lot of car enthusiasts are watch enthusiasts as well, and vice-versa. I would consider a man who has a Rolex Milgauss, a Hamilton Pan-Europe and probably something else a watch collector, or at least an enthusiast!
2nd comment. But I have to make it. I Love James and the British people, because only he/they would say "excuse me, I'm having a skittle" WHILE MAKING THEIR OWN CONTENT. As if it's a bother to us AT ALL the he's enjoying his skittles. Even the Brits who move to America maintain that beautiful hospitality. I was building some cabinets and counters for this guy (with the same real name as mine) last week. He moved from Britain to Texas about 15 years ago, still has an amazing accent, and within 5 minutes of me arriving to start my work, I was offered multiple beverages and snacks, and then told I had free reign over the pantry and fridge while I worked, so long as any alcohol consumed wasn't hindering my work. And he tipped me. And every time we needed a conversation, he left me with a "cheers!". Best customer I've ever had. Anywho. Sorry for the tangent. I just Love that British hospitality. Hard to find that unless you're in the right pet of the south these days.
Honestly pretty fun to see that James is still doing what he does best. However Im curious if he would swap the tesla with something on a similar level. Something like the porsche taycan. Or would he still keep it.
He would probably get the Model S plaid if he were to swap.
Bahaha the green light on the blinker stick and Jupiter reference was epic, I relate to it. I remember when I was really young, about 1999, I seen my first heads up display in a car. I was 7 and I couldn’t wrap my head around seeing something displayed on something clear lol.
The real question - Why would anyone watch a James May KZhead video if they don't like James May? I appreciate your humor and your insight - thanks. Have another Skittle and enjoy.
Well thanks for replying to our views!!
There are so many blokes in the comments section of electric car reviews spouting absolute nonsense. Electric cars threatening their manhood is a new one but you could be on to something James.
The original Datsun Sunny 120Y had the best indicator sound. like a 'click, tick', 'click, tick' noise.
I hope James has plans to do more TV shows along the lines of 'Our Man In Japan', which was highly entertaining. Thank you James + the production team.
I drove from New Jersey to Southern Florida in a Model 3 Long Range and the charging stops were incredibly easy to plan ahead and I had no point of my trip where I felt like I might be stranded due to fuel issues.
So proud of you...so everyone in the US can drive everywhere throughout the US without concern? Mind you if that was the case then why did you bother to "plan ahead".
@@BWolf00 Because you have to figure out the most efficient/best stops with the least amount of charging time, which usually all automated anyways. Where the planning comes, is actually selecting the actual chargers. With petrol stations, you really don't have much choice. With EV, you can pick to stop at a shopping centre or a McDonald's. So, depends on where you want to be.
@@BWolf00 Just a little side note, the US has some of the best EV charging infrastructure in the world, considering its size. Here in New Zealand, Tesla only recently deployed their fast chargers at the capital recently. Considering all chargers here, they're far more spaced out and less common than the US.
@@britishmalayasociety Dude, did you go to sleep while writing this "...With petrol stations, you really don't have much choice. With EV, you can pick to stop at a shopping centre or a McDonald's. So, depends on where you want to be." Really, so you can't plan where to stop with a petrol vehicle???🥲 Also, "...the US has some of the best EV charging infrastructure in the world, considering its size." Maybe that holds true for the east coast, but in the mid-west and generally removed from the coast...there's still isolated ICE generator charging stations (at least there was 5 yrs ago). My point is in the US you DO still have to plan out your trips...it's the petrol vehicles that this isn't absolutely necessary. BTW, just love the idea of grid independent diesel generators being used to charge the environmental carbon free EV's.
@@BWolf00 You don't often find a petrol station attached to a shopping centre, or even a decent cafe, unless you're filling up at BP, are you? Furthermore, not everyone is lucky enough to fill for what, $4 or $5 USD a gallon. It's almost $8 USD a gallon here. Cost to charge, often $0. Which is why you plan. You could not plan, and just, find whatever EV charging station you want. But because EV charging stations don't require much infrastructure, what if you want food? Or to use the bathroom? Or not pay for charging? Sometimes you have to plan. Do you want to know how many chargers Tesla put in our capital city in 2019-2020? 6 chargers. The next nearest ones are 142 km or 88 mi away. This is more than sufficient for us. If you look at the Plugshare map over the US, it's plastered with chargers of all varieties everywhere. Even in rural areas and national parks. You would have to quite literally be in the US's most rural town, Glasgow, Montana, to not have access to public charging. But even then, they have electricity so they can charge at home. Even then, Australia has far more space between charging points. There are some major cities there that aren't connected yet. Despite this, EV sales are a huge there.
i'm really disappointed with how people can write distasteful comments. James may not have deserved this.
Please do more car reviews - Its fun to watch. Of course only if you feel like it :)
The world needs more James Mays (Jameses May?). It always has. But especially right now.
James May: I don't know why people get upset about electric cars. Also James May: Has a popular car show with Clarkson.
@randomguy8196 The batteries are valuable so there is commercial incentive to reuse or recycle them. The EU have regulations on minimum recycling efficiency on batteries. Other countries are less stringent on this. But, battery recycling technology isn't difficult to deploy. India has them. Some of the best companies can reach over 90% efficiency.
Who else would like to see that road trip, James mentioned, in a Tesla or maybe some other EV? Or imagine the three of them doing it in EVs as a special or two for Grand Tour.

Had a tesla parking next to my car a week ago, so had more than enough time to check the stories about the build quality. I didn't want this video to end. I f***ing lost it when he said he knows Bottom Gear. Please make a video with all of them enjoyin Bottom Gear memes and having Clarkson reading them out loud while the rest just die from laughter
@7:05 so true. My grandfather was attached to a British unit in WWII and was scarred for life watching Englishmen needlessly die because of their need to drink tea in a war zone. They’d not only become static at inopportune times but would go out from behind cover. He was legitimately traumatized and would become upset just seeing Brits from time to time. One I witnessed was at the Indy 500 in the early 90s where we met Nigel Mansell in the garage area and he reminded my grandfather of his battle buddy that died.
I was going to have an electric gate "but then I remembered I'm not a tw@"😂😂😂
The problem is, that petrolheads want to hear a V8 Sound. You cant get that with a Dyson on wheels.
There is a whole market there to explore as electric cars have to make sounds at slow speed, why not the sound of an V8 idling?
There are aftermarket solutions to add sound from any engine through the car's audio system, which isn't too far of from what some ICE cars have in them anyway.
@@Bratfalken I hate the "pedestrian warning" sounds EV's and Hybrids make. I disabled them on my cars. I think Tesla has a recall now because you could customize that sound to whatever you wanted. It's dumb anyway, there are a lot of luxury cars that are almost completely silent, and why would a hearing impaired person be walking down a street or anywhere where the only way to be alerted of danger is sound?
@@Bratfalken genuinely can see bigger brands implementing software packages that can transform the driving experience to a certain car. I know Toyota is developing (or at least patented) a fake manual that takes into account power/torque curves of an old IC engine, and even simulates shifting. As an engineer, I can see a future Mercedes EQ offering the engine response of a 2016 S Class for a small fee. Would make driving more interesting, and MB can continue to dig deeper into pockets bc EV's have less serviceable components
You can't get that on most new ICE vehicles anyway. You're shackled by rev limiters, fuel particulate filters and V8s are getting uncommon to begin with. I'd rather have the silence of an EV rather than the whiny racket of a 4 cylinder turbo.
Yes James you're right If nobody did anything, everyone did nothing ;D
Tesla refreshed the model S and X!
Did the Mini have a flashing indicator stalk on the right side of the steering wheel as James demonstrated? It might have done, but how did little James notice that? I remember the flashing end of the stalk too - but imagine it was on the left and that's how I could see it. Many old English cars had it on the right (as did my last Honda Prelude) so it might have been........? (I wonder if James remembers LJKS piece on how to drive an automatic properly in Car?)
Thanks for saying about automatic bias, I teach automatic and always get told that my learners aren’t proper drivers when they pass! Do you follow any other car KZhead rs? Great vid, James
PS I also teach in a Leaf 62kw
It's unfortunate that bias is reinforced by the gov not issuing full licenses to automatic drivers. I don't hate automatics but passing in one would make buying a car stupidly difficult
