Old Wood Shaper Back In Use (Cleanup / Restoration)

The wood shaper, also known as moulder, is a woodworking tool used to mill profiles or notch wood. The one I have here was in very good condition and not seized at all even if stood unused for more than 10 years (according to the gentleman who sold it to me).
I don't have any interesting information about this brand and can't find any precise information about period or manufacturer. Base and fence are cast aluminum, table is cast iron with a very nice shaper finish on top side.
Stuff I used:
Petrol as de-greaser
Penetrating oil to help losen fasteners
Synthetic oil on all clean surfaces
Steel whool to buff the brass plaque
Fusion 360 to design the holder and PETG to print in on the CR-10
This machine was intended to be used with three phase mains voltage. Since I don't have access to that in my workshop I used capacitor as static phase converter to run it on my home single phase mains voltage.
I used one run capacitors of 8uf and one start capacitor that connects to the motor only to start it up of 100uf.
You can calculate (roughly) capacitor size knowing the motor horse power:
run capacitor = hp x 5
start capacitor = hp x 60
And be sure to get some with high voltage rating like 400.
Using capacitors to simulate third phase works great and it's very easy to do but you lose some power (up to 1/3 I think) so keep that in mind for some other machines, it might be a problem!
In my set up I have to manually connect the start capacitor to the motor by holding the momentary switch (I wired up here 14:10) until the motor gets up to speed so two or three seconds.
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!
Suggestions and comments are welcome.

  • You are one of the only dudes that actually has proper grinder safety. Even though it may seem stupid to some but grinders have two handles for a reason. I fully appreciate the work you do on the tools. Safety is what makes me stay through till the end of the video. Thank you

  • So hypnotic to watch how these things come apart, and get put back together. The way you do it, it makes me think I could do such a thing, someday. Space restrictions prevent needed tools and space to work, but I hope I can do this kind of thing someday. Keep up the great and inspiring work!

  • Great video! Here's a tip from some old woodworkers i have know through the years... Use some paste wax polish on the table surfaces. Prevents rusting, and the wood glides effortlessly across the surface.

  • Something that I’ll never forget when I was doing my city and guilds in carpentry and joinery was the emphasis the teacher made about how dangerous a spindle milder is, “all joinery tools have the ability to kill” he said “but the spindle moulder and lack of guards for most processes needs the upmost respect”. I did a “bulls eye window” for my part 3 exam, my ass was twitching the whole time I was using the big spindle in the workshop, excellent video. Pete

    • My thoughts as well, I was cringing the entire time he used it without the guard. I use to have a wonderful employee who was a graduate of that program well. He was from London, could do just about anything he put his mind to as long as you could keep his attention on what he was doing.

  • Hi from England Firstly: Nice service you've carried out on this...good to see that it wasn't repainted either...it clearly didn't need it... I bet that drive had been making a rite row with the rotor out of alignment like that... New bearings good... I bet someone who had this before couldn't be arsed or lacked the aptitude to sort the issue out... Their loss..your gain eh... 😉 Secondly: Please watch your fingers with this son....spindle moulders can be deadly... ☺️ I've got a very old spindle moulder in storage...Wadkin EV... It's an early one (1920s) designed to run off a lineshaft... The headstock bearings feel rough on it....as well as it needing a general strip down & rebuild... It's one for the future though is that...

Wow I've never seen anything like that before. So that printer melts small threads of plastic and lays them out into a perfect 3D form of your cad image?? That's insane. I know you're a traditional craftsman but please won't you show some more of that cool machine at work? Wow wow wow
