Old Wood Shaper Back In Use (Cleanup / Restoration)
The wood shaper, also known as moulder, is a woodworking tool used to mill profiles or notch wood. The one I have here was in very good condition and not seized at all even if stood unused for more than 10 years (according to the gentleman who sold it to me).
I don't have any interesting information about this brand and can't find any precise information about period or manufacturer. Base and fence are cast aluminum, table is cast iron with a very nice shaper finish on top side.
Stuff I used:
Petrol as de-greaser
Penetrating oil to help losen fasteners
Synthetic oil on all clean surfaces
Steel whool to buff the brass plaque
Fusion 360 to design the holder and PETG to print in on the CR-10
This machine was intended to be used with three phase mains voltage. Since I don't have access to that in my workshop I used capacitor as static phase converter to run it on my home single phase mains voltage.
I used one run capacitors of 8uf and one start capacitor that connects to the motor only to start it up of 100uf.
You can calculate (roughly) capacitor size knowing the motor horse power:
run capacitor = hp x 5
start capacitor = hp x 60
And be sure to get some with high voltage rating like 400.
Using capacitors to simulate third phase works great and it's very easy to do but you lose some power (up to 1/3 I think) so keep that in mind for some other machines, it might be a problem!
In my set up I have to manually connect the start capacitor to the motor by holding the momentary switch (I wired up here 14:10) until the motor gets up to speed so two or three seconds.
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

How many 58 year old married grandmothers besides me love these videos? Awesome job! 😃
You are one of the only dudes that actually has proper grinder safety. Even though it may seem stupid to some but grinders have two handles for a reason. I fully appreciate the work you do on the tools. Safety is what makes me stay through till the end of the video. Thank you
Nice to see you supporting Hand Tool Rescue ... and you went for the premium brass knob
I appreciate you doing these without music or voiceover. Super relaxing. Reminds me of watching my dad work in his workshop when I was younger.
Same here! Love the silence. I often watch vids like this on KZhead while watching tv, news, movies crappy tv show what ever it might be to make a distraction. If the YT vids have music or dialogue I can't watch this way.
I admire that you chose to keep it in the factory finish. Nicely done, as usual.
So hypnotic to watch how these things come apart, and get put back together. The way you do it, it makes me think I could do such a thing, someday. Space restrictions prevent needed tools and space to work, but I hope I can do this kind of thing someday. Keep up the great and inspiring work!
I always like when you can take equipment like this down to the castings without having to kill anything in the process.
I'm Japanese I'm your fan Your video is very interesting I'm rooting for you.
My goodness.................a lot of work but now you have a new machine!!!!
Great video! Here's a tip from some old woodworkers i have know through the years... Use some paste wax polish on the table surfaces. Prevents rusting, and the wood glides effortlessly across the surface.
Spray on Teflon works best....also protects from corrosion
I always like seeing old tools being brought back to life.
Something that I’ll never forget when I was doing my city and guilds in carpentry and joinery was the emphasis the teacher made about how dangerous a spindle milder is, “all joinery tools have the ability to kill” he said “but the spindle moulder and lack of guards for most processes needs the upmost respect”. I did a “bulls eye window” for my part 3 exam, my ass was twitching the whole time I was using the big spindle in the workshop, excellent video. Pete
My thoughts as well, I was cringing the entire time he used it without the guard. I use to have a wonderful employee who was a graduate of that program well. He was from London, could do just about anything he put his mind to as long as you could keep his attention on what he was doing.
The time lapse on the capacitor holders was beautiful work. Enjoyed very much.
Brilliant restoration. The confidence you have in dismantling and then reassembling these tools is impressive. Thanks for another great video!
Every now and then you get to see a master at his work and you simply smile because what he does is beyond most, well done, very inspirational, kind regards Louie from Ireland
Man I wish you uploaded every day. That's a lot of talent for one person
Very cool man. I’m glad you did a gentle clean up/restoration rather than going over the top. 👍🏼
Your standard of the restorations is first rate, keep it up.
So jealous of the 3D printer and you understanding 3 Phase systems!
These videos are so relaxing to watch
I'm glad you used a puller instead of a hammer this time, well done that's what you call it neatly done.
Wow beautiful machine, beautiful renovation. Thanks for the video!
I recognize the adjustable wrench. Cool that you support the maker of it also!
Hi from England Firstly: Nice service you've carried out on this...good to see that it wasn't repainted either...it clearly didn't need it... I bet that drive had been making a rite row with the rotor out of alignment like that... New bearings good... I bet someone who had this before couldn't be arsed or lacked the aptitude to sort the issue out... Their loss..your gain eh... 😉 Secondly: Please watch your fingers with this son....spindle moulders can be deadly... ☺️ I've got a very old spindle moulder in storage...Wadkin EV... It's an early one (1920s) designed to run off a lineshaft... The headstock bearings feel rough on it....as well as it needing a general strip down & rebuild... It's one for the future though is that...
Fantastic!!! Nice old machine... a great addition to your shop!
That claw tool to remove the bearing looks awesome, and seems to be incredibly efficient
It's standard equipment for pulling things (Google "three jaw puller").
Some people refer to them as gear pullers (For a point of reference)
Right tool for the job! I finally bought a cheap set :') was like 20€ on amazon. Well worth for light duty! We'll see if they last any
Out if your restoration videos I’ve seen this was probably the most looked after before resto. Glad to see someone looks after their machines😂
Great work. Always impressed at how close woodworkers put their fingers to spinning blades! Goditi sempre i tuoi video, amico mio.
Ahah! Damn true! Thank you a lot my friend.
I like your videos bro.. And the final result was absolut great ☺️
Thats how you get the best cuts hahaha
Yes these routers are considered to be more dangerous then tablesaws. Imagine what would have happened to your hand if the blade caught the wood.
Nahh thing is not that dangerous. At work we have old big-ass jointer. Now this thing is realy "scary";)
I've just observed your skilled work and appreciated much .. Thanks for efforts
Immaculate and beautiful job as always.....well done sir!
Your projects are awesome
Awesome video. Love the CAD. That switch design was clever. Thanks for sharing! : )
Exelente trabajo... Hermosa la tupi... Sigue asi... Te felicito.... Gracias por compartir tus trabajos
Nice job. It should last years.
That looked to be in really good relatively unused condition. Great find. Now it looks brand new. Enjoy.
Great work! Was super impressed by the 3d printing!
Well done! This is a very beautiful tool! TY ...Newk from Kentucky
Incredibile restauro, ottimo lavoro.

You do good work and don’t mess around showing off you project for 1/4 of your video. Great job.
Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
What can you say but shazzzzam it's up and running probably better than new and is so compact . Happy Trails
Love a good tear down cleanup! For some reason I was expecting the music from Dustin Penner's channel to start playing :)
MEUUUUU VELHOOOO ESSA ATE EU COMPRAVA DE VOCÊ , COMO ME FAZ FALTA UMA MAQUINA DESSA, PEQUENA , PRATICA , E MUITO UTIL. PARABENS
Very nice tool! Good video mate!
Its an unusual piece to be 3 phase for such a small tool. Great restoration.
not rely in an industrial shop for a couple of reasons one it will run cooler on 3 ph and it will run cheaper on 3ph
That is such a cool machine, I don't think I've ever seen one like that before. Great work on getting it cleaned up!
Thank you!
I sure feel like I'm watching an old-school Jimmy Diresta video. That BTW is the highest compliment anyone can give/receive.
Excellent video and the additional explanation is very helpful too for a goof like me -ATB Marc - Belgium
Your a very clever man. Excellent video.
A nice wee spindle moulder

Magnifico: Lavoro della prima classe! Che bella macchina. Soltanto quelle vecchie sono fatte cosi: Belle e robuste. Hai fatto molto bene a trovarla.

sweet make's me wish I had tools like that good job my Friend 🗽🌞
Really impressive!
That tool is awesome! 👍🏼👍🏼
That magic 3d printer footage.... too cool!
Dude ... holy COW. I honestly thought you were taking artistic license and did an animation sequence where you created the phase adapter ... BUT THAT WAS REAL!!! Wow I've never seen anything like that before. So that printer melts small threads of plastic and lays them out into a perfect 3D form of your cad image?? That's insane. I know you're a traditional craftsman but please won't you show some more of that cool machine at work? Wow wow wow
Great clean up. Thanks bro
Awesome video! I'm great at taking things apart but can never get them back together.
Awesome stuff as always!
Great video, damn I miss working in Fusion 360 it's such a great feeling when you can model something and then go make it or 3d print, used it all the time in school we made a motorized camera slider where we printed the controlbox and the frame of the slider and it's so powerful to just being able to tweak your design if needed.
Brilliant video carry on great work ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼
Nice work man
You’re very talented! I'm from Russia and I want to say that you’re inspiring me!
Mika Kias
Awesome job.. 👍🏼
Good work and very interesting machine tool
Nice restoration
Deeply satisfying.
You’ve got crazy skills
Wonderful work .. Continue for the best .. With the best greetings.
Get some blue shop towels. They look similar to a common role of paper towels only they are a blue color. They are super tuff and they clean and adsorb 10 times better than any other paper towels. Here in the U.S. they can be purchased at most parts stores (even Wal-Marts). They cost around $2.00 U.S. a roll..... Nice resto on a nice tool.
First like and then watch the video Your videos are amazing man
And I was the 1000th like exactly, quite by surprise 👍👍
