Mico is a young adult orangutan and has successfully graduated from Forest School at Sepilok. He's very clever but clingy, which means he finds leaving his home behind an especially difficult task.

@@quoleshawills2702 I am an ardent animal lover. I like Mico tremendously; this move for him is strange, yet necessary. This is the best for this animal.
Why? So they have to put him down when he funally attacks a human and may kill someone?
@@kiki29073 it was a joke.
Poor Mico. I am so sad for him. What happens whem he realizes he will be gone forever. That is heartbreaking.
Hopefully, he'll meet others like himself.

Oh well...😒
He's back at the center after failing this release, his 3rd. He's too habituated to humans and cannot survive on his own, a problem that most orangutans in Sepilok's care have. He's now living in a cage and probably will for the rest of his life because Sepilok allowed tourists and volunteers to handle and interact directly with him while also failing to teach him the proper skills needed to survive on his own in the wild. He returned to the center after each release because he depends fully on humans to eat and provide shelter.
Hope that their environment is preserved. What lovely animals, very sad to see their homes disappearing.
@Iferg Yt that was hilarious 😐
Us consumers can help with conservation like avoid buying things with palm oil
They get dropped off deep in an Indonesian National Forest Preserve that is protected by the government to always be a publicly owned forest that is never sold to corporations for clearcutting. It's deep in the jungle in Borneo and is comparable to the Amazon jungle, two of the densest, most biodiverse tropical forests in the world.
@@Taqruinnius Americans are to selfish to do that
Why?
Do the orangutans feel like they're being abandoned :( What if they start crying and looking for the humans and trying to find his way back :( I can feel myself tearing up already
a good question
awww just imagine the squealing distress noises he would make along the way :’((
it def is a tender moment for all but its like when a parent drops a kid off at college. you realize it marks the end of that childhood phase but its a necessary step if you ever want to see them blossom into that capable, independent fully grown bad ass you know they'll be
@@speakerz74 no it would be more like your parents dropping you off at a new home they bought for you, without telling you, leaving you there, and then never contacting you again.
@@lilsaam they keep a careful monitor of them upon release just like they keep a careful watch on a host of endangered animals in the wild. orangutans are also smart enough to know when their homies come pay a visit. and would you rather that parent just take care of their kid for their whole life? at some point the eagles push their young out the nest because they know that if they don't learn to fly, they won't make it as an eagle

I'm currently in my last year of school before College. I always wanted to study medicine but now I've decided to study Veterinary Medicine and Psychology in order to work and help these interesting and beautiful beings.

Good for you!!
14 YEARS is a VERY LONG TIME to be held in captivity. The longer they stay, the more difficult it is.
1:32 He didnt just hang on the guy. He hugged him tightly, that's affection. These orangutans are just too gentle to be released into the wild when they grew up with humans before.
But the ones released are doing just fine
I want a Mico update! Wish I could see what he is up to!
Here's an update: while the caregivers were distracted, Mico jumped into the truck and drove back home. Upon arrival, he went to the kitchen and made himself a bologni sandwich while watching everybody lose their cool about it. Sadly, Mico is a loafer, he will never amount to anything.
Mico taught himself how to use a gun,now he is busy shooting poachers with the other orangutans.
@@noisyguest5249 this would be a wonderful development tbh
@@heretustay Legends say the species of poachers are going to go extinct by 2021
He failed this release, his 3rd, because he's too habituated to humans and was not taught the skills needed to live in the wild. Sepilok allows tourists, hotel employees and various fundraising groups to interact directly with their orangutans which gets them more comfortable around humans and exposes them to multiple diseases. Combine that with a inconsistent rehab program and you have orangutans, like Mico, that rely on humans for food and shelter, which is why he's failed every time they've tried to release him. There are multiple orangutans at Sepilok that have failed repeated wild releases and will live in captivity for the rest of their lives. This center needs to be shut down because they do more harm than good
Lol at 4:38 it looks like Mico has everything he needs for life as a male stripper 😂😂😂😂
Love Orangutans 🦧 forever 😍 from San Diego California
I don't understand how any of these habituated apes can really become wild again when they're used to seeing people as banana dispensers who tend to their every need.
Exactly
This center has been investigated for just this problem over and over. These orangutans are too habituated to humans and cannot survive in the wild. They allow tourists and volunteers to interact with the orangutans; the orangutans are permitted to roam freely, getting into everything without supervision; and their rehab program doesn't involve enough time in the forest. It needs to be shut down
@@Cara-39 oh this is so sad:(
@@twujstary8680 The rehab program for very young orphans requires interaction with human caretakers so they can learn how to forage for food and build nests, learn that snakes are to be feared and, for the very young, how to climb. Because orangutans stay with their mothers until around 8yrs old and learn everything from them, they cannot be released into the wild without these skills. The issue is, the orangutans should only interact with trained caretakers, preferably the same ones the entire time they're at the sanctuary. Sepilok however, allows tourists to interact with the orangutans, which means they are too habituated to humans and may catch diseases. There have been multiple reports of orangutans that have attacked tourists and they're allowed to roam unsupervised around the sanctuary. All of this goes against what the IUCN says is necessary for the proper rehabilitation of orphan orangutans and the protection of wild populations they may come in contact with.
@@Cara-39 thank you so much for this reply!
What an amazing lady you are. Thankyou for being so caring and passionate enough to save these beautiful Apes. I love them. Without you, who knows, by now they would have been extinct. I went to Sepilok last year, I have to say, I was a bit disappointed as I didn't get much time there. I will hopefully go again in the near future. I would love to work as a volunteer there, I am so passionate about primates. Thankyou again for being caring enough to save our Orang Utans. Much love and gratitude to you ❤
So sad to say goodbye. But mischief is also a sign of boredom and Mico needed to be on his own. I'm thinking of how older human teens are almost ready to leave home and can't wait to explore the world.
You guys took care of him at the forest school, can you really blame him for wanting to stay? Maybe the connection you have with these animals really made an impression on Mico that he's having trouble shaking.
Man the big males are so beautiful!! So cool.. they dont look like they could move threw them trees the way they do

so then if this time Mico’s release ibto the protected ssanctuary is “successful “ this means you guys are Never Going To See Him Again, Right?? I can see the difficulty in this; you want to be sure he’s doing all right but then you’d be maintaining ties of affextion, (which he will very likely miss too). That’s a Tough One.
Must be hard letting go!
This is amazing
Very good work 👍👍👍
Wow! They're so human at the same time! Incredible to see where we came from!
1:33 biiiig hug🥺
Good luck mico
the saddest part is male orangutans are so antisocial in the wild other than finding a mate so he is leaving his people at the conservation and will be alone but it’s where he is meant to be :(
How is it “anti-social” if it’s a natural behavioral pattern?(not meant antagonistically, just a question of how one could apply human norms to a species with completely different natural behavior) And he failed his release, he’s back at sepilok. Somebody else said that he’s at least the sixth Orangutan this has happened to and that at least some of the others have wound up in cages because of this, because grown male orangutan are too dangerous to humans to allow them to freely roam around the areas with humans in constant close proximity.
@@Thor-Orion but it isn't normal for him because he has adapted to living with humans and displays human behavior. Also anti-social is just the word to show that rhis animal does not maintain social contact. Some animals are social, like horses who live in groups with a stratified social hierarchy and some are anti-social like bears who avoid contact with others if the same species. In the wild males are normally antisocial meaning they live alone and only contact the group for reproductive purposes. That means he is an anti-social animal species. However the females are social because they live in a group.
@@Thor-Orion I think you misunderstand antisocial as an judgement.
@@Ottts22 antisocial is a diagnosis that could only be applied to humans. I don’t think I’m misunderstanding, I think that anthropomorphizing isn’t really the way to go with analysis.

Is he going to be ok tho, he's gonna be so scared away from all he knows. 😔
Hey, I've been there several times...
epic beard Mico
they should have daily monke vlogs they’d get sooo many subscribers
Yeah bro we got you
I wonder is he tagged so they can monitor him. Has to be stressful for him. Hope he managed
I'm sure they do tag them because they have put 7 years of work into his life and they also do research on how they do get on after rehabilitation so they surely must be tagged right someone...?
They do it because if he is not able to adapt in the wild, he would have to be given help, or let him die. This has happened with many of them all ready. Some have been released and brought back 3 or 4 times. Some have been determined to not be able to live on their own, but they deserve a decent quality of life. And they also can help with repopulating the species.
Thank you for that info
1:11 baby in the back just laying flat 😂😂😂
I hope that u guys do check upon them time to time even in the wild.

Plot Twist: Mico comes back tomorrow
It’s now July 2023. Any idea how many Micro is doing?
At 1st I thought this was a clip from Orangutan Jungle School, but it's not. Looks a lot like it, but the release cages are completely different. The nice elderly woman isn't in the other one and the narrator sounds like OJS's narrator but she's different. I dont know if its intentional or not.
Because This rehabs center is in malaysia
This one is from meet the orang utans documentary
@Calixte Dion borneo too
I think this is the sanctuary that rehabilitates orangutans less successfully compared to BOS in Borneo and other sancturaies. The orangutans in this sanctuary looks too humanized so there are reports of their orangutans not making it alone in the wild and finding their way back to this same sanctuary (since orangutans are quite smart) compared to those being released by BOS. That is why some orangutan organizations do not like the methods of this sanctuary.
He's like any teen he just doesn't want to
I WANT TO WORK WITH THESE ANIMALS, IF ONLY...IT WOULD BE DREAM COME TRUE...🙄💫
Hopefully Mico is out making Mico Jrs and enjoying his freedom to be a wild animal
Are they chipped for monitoring? I hope Mico is doing well, a year later!!!
He's probably chilling on a tree right now.
Lucky for Meco they never truly release them in the wild. Just farther out on their sanctuary. You can't undonesticate an animal. They have to feed them everyday for the rest of their lives. Meco wants to be with peopke so let him. Why are people forcing these poor animals in the wild? If doesn't want to go why force him? Un real.
It's too bad that Mico couldn't have been released with another orangutan, so they would have each other, for help and companionship.
Another attraction place to see orang utan is in Semenggoh Borneo. Very close near to my place. Very cool to see monkey in the morning fighting for food. I feel blessed.
@Warslave I know. What I meant the forest that I mentioned above not just have orang utan but also monkey. So every morning I saw monkey playing around beside orang utan. Cause orang utan quite shy and scared to see human. So they rarely show up.
@@ieynna09 Orangs are not monkeys, they are Great Apes. Apes have more DNA in common with humans than monkeys.
