This is a video presentation that Nathan Diazleal completed for the AUT 490 course at SIU. In this video, Nathan covers the application, operation, and diagnosis of a variable valve timing equipped engine.
Fantastic video. In fact, you introduce to the most common failures of the VVT phaser. Invaluable information. This is the most complete information I've found on internet about how VVT works and most important, the most common fails and why, from the beginning to the end. As student, you've got the point of view for transmitting knowledge, so I advance you'll have a nice professional career. Thanks.
This is excellent. Thank you for an easy to understand explanation of VVT. I did not have a clue. Now I understand the operation. Good job.
Good job explaining the system. Direct and to the point. Not a lot of BS like some videos.
Nicely done, Nathan
Very clear and concise
Other than metal clogging the OCV screens, poor oil maintenance building up sludge will do the same thing, sometimes the screens break apart and clog up the oil return side galley and prevent oil flow also. The locking pin hole can get worn out and beveled not allowing the pin to actually lock into place. To visually monitor a slipping problem and not being able to lock down, depending on the valve cover design it may also be noticed that the chain is driving the gear at a constant rate while the cam is lagging behind until the guts of the VVT are forced along with the inner guts being pushed by the outer housing, it's nice to watch this action in slow motion on a video recording. The added pressure of the valve springs is forcing the camshaft to lag behind during a lifting action and more force is needed to push the cam along later in time. Another very nice presentation.
Veey veey informative. Thanx for your time man.
Excellent video thank you for helping our community. Congratulations.👍

❤❤❤thanks
Good explanation, please is the RPM is calculated
Muy interesante
How about if the car itself is open loop does the vvt-i works the same?
enjoyed Thânxx
I got one intake valve not closing completely in cylinder one. What could it be? My car is an mk6 jetta gli.
Carbon build up. Damaged valve seat. Exhaust valve bent
Hi good work. What is your opinion on the cleaning the solenoid valve on a variable compression automotive ac compressor?
👍
Can anyone answer this? 😊 My car is 4 cyl 8v petrol (non interference engine) and recently i advanced the cam pulley 1 tooth to see if it would help with a little bit more power lower down. Im 100% sure it did but the only thing that worries me is the exhaust is also advanced. Any thoughts would be brilliant, thank you x
