Hey there, I just wanted to expound more on your point on why it's more painful in certain areas (from a nursing/medical POV)! Pain tends to be worse around bony prominences (knees, elbows, shoulders, ribs, fingers, etc.) because the nerves tend to lay closer to the bones and joint areas and where there isn't a lot of muscle and fat tissues, the nerves are more exposed and therefore more sensitive to pain than say the calf area or the front of the thigh.
wow that makes total sense. thanks for helping to clarify the reason for that phenomenon. i'm going to alter the way i explain it from now on
yeah! no problem. I mean we have nerves everywhere, even in the layers of our skin, but the bigger more major nerves are deeper towards the bone. So when there's no "cushioning" it just hurts like a mother XD
That's funny....my experience is opposite....fatty areas I've had done seemed worse....my elbows and collar bone we're not bad at all...
can agree. I had a shoulder tattoo and everything was merely cat scratches until the artist went closer to my collarbone. Could feel the needle hammering the bone with newfound face-twisting pain mixed with cat scratches.
How interesting! I personally don't know why that is, but pain for everyone is different. So if it's the opposite for you, then that's how your nerves perceive the pain. There is also something to be said that we have nerves of all sizes everywhere (up close to the skin where our hair follicles are all the way down to the bone), and that may also be between muscles. For example, there is a really big nerve the goes from the groin area down across the butt muscles and into the legs (sciatic nerve) that can make the butt a very painful area to be tattooed.

When you take your first break is key, as SOON as you sit back down, it’s a struggle from there! If the artist doesn’t need the break wait until you absolutely have to before you suggest it. That first wipe after a break is BRUTAL!!
Trust No Drug true the fewer the breaks the better
True man, my 1st tattoo was in my ribs. I didnt call any break, i did the tattoo for 3hours without asking for a break, but the artist had to stop a little and then it is painfull to start again
@@JamesWithee That’s the catch22: Artist:“Be sure you hydrate before you arrive”. Me: Drinks fluids all day. Also me: Has the bladder of a 6 year old girl…

Was getting my ribs tatted. 15 mins in the pain was bearable I was gucci for the next hour. Then my artist took a bathroom break , shit went left from there smh. I heard it’s cause the skin starts healing
One thing that helps me when getting tattooed is to remember that the pain is only temporary. Remember to breathe too!

Everybody worries about pain... but no one warns you about the itching days after you get your tattoo. That's the real pain
El Deivid haha, truth.
Must say, when i got my tattoo it didnt itch at all
TRUTH! With both of mine the itching days were the worst. I can't even put a number on how many times I used an ice pack wrapped in a pillow case to numb my tattoo so that the itching wouldn't drive me nuts.
Just gotta pat the shit out of it and you'll be alright 🤣🤣
El Deivid i feel like being in pain is better than being itchy lmao
If fear of the pain is the only thing keeping you from getting a tattoo, just go for it! I was terrified and put it off for like 10 years, but finally went and got it done, and I actually ended up ENJOYING the way the needle felt. It was like stress relief. When he said it feels like someone scratching you with a needle, that is 100% accurate. There is a tiny bit of a warm/burning sensation that goes along with it, but it's totally manageable. I got mine on the outside of my forearm down near my wrist, was in the chair for about an hour, and I'd say the pain level was about a 2/10. There was one spot where it jumped to about a 3.5, but that was when she was going over the same exact spot for about 30 seconds. The pain is addicting. I can't wait to get more!
This message right here... I'm definitely going to get one then but I swear to myself that if this is actually painful...😀🔫
A 7+ hour session is a different ball game though
Sit for 4 hours and you won't be enjoying it lol
Its different when you're sitting for several hours though...
@@pimpnastyfunkychpimp. I did that multiple times and it was still enjoyable. Yes it hurts constantly, but at some paint the time just seems to turn into a big mush and suddenly it's over. Once you start again after a break it hurts again, but after a few minutes the time seems to flow again.
I'm getting my 2nd tattoo on Monday! And i'm binge watching these videos lol. this one will be a 5-6 hour session

Just got my first tattoo last week (inner bicep), and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. My artist is so talented and so chill; we were talking throughout the first hour of my 2-hour session. I was shocked at how much less painful it was than I was expecting. I was super comfortable for the first hour and 40 minutes- of course there was some pain, but at the worst moments, I’d probably describe it as scratching a 3-day-old sunburn. The final 20 minutes or so, I started to get sleepy (I was lying down, I think my brain was just getting impatient) and thirsty, and I started to feel the pain a bit more as she went back to touch up a few spots with shading. But overall, seriously totally tolerable. Dare I say enjoyable. Don’t let worries about the pain deter you! Also, great advice about prepping for the big day. I made sure to sleep well, stay hydrated, and eat two good meals leading up to my evening appointment; I think that definitely helped!
This made me feel confident to go get a tattoo 😂 I’ve given birth twice, I’ve given blood (and hated it) so many times, but I have a massive fear or needles in general. That’s what’s always held me back.

My best recommendation to handle the pain is to focus on your breathing. Just relax and breathe deeply - yoga style. It actually helped me quite a bit during my latest tattoo.
Lol dude ... I'm an EMT and your medical knowledge about the human body is pretty profound. Better than the average Joe by far. People don't begin to even understand things like the veins constricting which leads to this, which leads to that. Here’s a good tip to think about while you’re getting your tattoo and its painful Tell yourself that it isn’t dangerous pain. It’s pain, but it’s not dangerous pain. It helped me allot!

I have a high pain tolerance. Did a big lion on my back- was 5 hours, $500. I didn’t take a break either
I watched this before my first tattoo. I'm now four deep, with appointments for five and six upcoming, and have to say there's a ton of good advice in this video. The one thing I'd add is that some kind of physical distraction - gum, or a stress ball - can be a huge help. If you're unsure about your first tattoo on account of the pain, don't sweat it, it's really not that bad. I'm a world-class wuss, so if I can do it anyone can.

Just got my tatt and it didn’t hurt at all
@@prahdavenchy8662 Good to hear. My first didn't hurt either, though all four since have been painful to a lesser or greater degree. But all manageable.
Simon Evans I got my first tatts at age 18. 23 now. Have about 10. Nice sized to. I told myself it won’t hurt and don’t be a pussy. It worked- they actually didn’t hurt... Both sides of my neck done, finger, hip bone & around the hip bone, shoulder bone, shoulder blade & back... and more. Nipple piercings, 4 different dermals, 6 diff ear piercings, both belly buttons (top & bottom.) Had my lip pierced as well. Nothing was that bad besides the first nipple. I didn’t pass out but wooooo
@Hugo Amezcua Some of it will be painful, some won't. I found my inner bicep to be the sorest tattoo I've had so far. For me it's less about the location and more about the design - tattoos that need areas to be reworked several times are much more uncomfortable than line work or script where it's done in one pass. But we're all different. Anyway, it's all manageable. Prep right and you'll be fine.
Most informative video I’ve watched from a newbie’s perspective- thank you for going into so much detail and taking time to explain things!

I am so glad to have found this video as I am about to get my FIRST tattoo. I am SO nervous but I am finding comfort and relief knowing that it is going to hurt but where I am getting it, won't be so bad. So I am thankful for this video.
I went in and was going through a design then asked where it would be best pain wise and the guy freaked out, asked me to take a board with nails and hit myself over and over again then come in again and meet. It really made me feel bad and put me off getting tattooed for awhile. I just appreciate getting information about everything.

Great video with accurate descriptions regarding discomfort levels.
Awesome video dude. I’m going for my first tattoo tomorrow and you just made me feel even more at ease. Keep up the great work.
I have 12 tattoos, 4 big pieces, and for me I will never take a break during my sessions I’ve found that if I take a break my skin/ body thinks the pain is over so it settles down then when the needles hit again the pain is amplified, that’s just for me though
I plan my tats so I never sit longer than an hour a day. I have anxiety when sitting still in general.
I agree about the breaks. I always try to avoid them as much as possible because coming back after a break is the worst part. But when I do a large piece I don't have much choice. If we're going to sit for 8 hours then I have to accept that the artist will want a lunch break about halfway through. It might be painful and hard for me as the client, but the artist has to concentrate and work for several hours straight and it takes a toll on them as well. So having a lunch break is necessary to keep their spirit up and make sure they can do the best job possible. I'd rather deal with the post-break pain than end up with a bad tattoo because the artist couldn't keep their concentration up.
True my longest tattoo was 8 hrs long 3days ago lol and when you stop then continue its hurts like a B****
I’ll never sit for longer than 4-5 hours. My pain tolerance can only go so far and I won’t push myself if I can’t handle it. Both myself and my tattooist are fine with booking another session to finish things off. My longest tattoo was 4.5 hours on my entire forearm from elbow to wrist. Almost gave up toward the end; felt like my arm was gonna fall off from the shading 😂
Yeah I'm exactly the same, but I'm getting half my chest covered on the right peck, sternum and just under each collar bone and I'm just gonna take as little breaks as possible hahah
... this will sound weird.. but, i find it best to “run to the pain”... ie, accept that it might hurt, and embrace it.. if u try to run from it, it will win..
Kramer 1 exactly . My first couple tattoos I ain’t know what to expect so they hurt like fuck but as I went on and the more and more I got I just anticipated the pain and literally watched as the needle hit my skin and the whole process and it seemed to take away from the pain. Was more focused on the art than the pain
313Mally Bands Next time tell yourself it won’t hurt and that you’re not a pussy hahahaha
This is pretty good. I just got my first tattoo today and I just look at the ceiling and remember to breathe. Like I pretty much did embrace it

Very nice to see your channel. Awesome commentary. Very professional. Good stuff bud.
You absolutely have sold me on getting my first tattoo.
Got my first tattoo today. Took 5 hours and pretty much everything the dude said in this video is very accurate.
Thanks for this info. Keeping it real and straight up. Appreciate that very much bro
I got a 3 hr tattoo on my ribs and armpit area yesterday. Personally it didn't hurt me, I was able to sit through it fine. Everyone handles it different. So if you really want a rib tattoo or a painful area tattoo, I'd go for it! People handle things differently so see how it feels for you:)
Getting a tattoo feels like a needle being dragged across a light sunburn along with vibration. But like he said it’s like you know in your mind that it doesn’t necessarily feel good but it doesn’t hurt enough to where it causes an actual reaction you just sit there and deal with it. In my opinion it’s so worth it after it’s done. I agree with everything he said he described getting a tattoo perfectly.
After awhile you can tolerate the pain lol li got used to it
Yea, that vibration is very prominent.
Yeah vibrations usually make me go numb, ich, or just irritate. I mean if its going for so long. Especially in one spot.
Agreed! It’s actually not bad relative to the results and the end is well worth it

I agree with the paper towel wiping being the worst part.
mareeeann0987 yess!! I got my first tattoo on the inner part of my forearm and it covers the whole inner forearm for 6 hours and the artist kept wiping it with the paper towel.
I got my first tattoo yesterday. It takes up my whole shoulderblade. The most amazing part was the wiping! My artist uses a cold damp towel. Its cool, soft.. so relieving. 😍
the wiping was nice for me it helped with the pain on my shoulder
It sucks when they wipe it with a dry paper towel but if it is with a wet one it feels good.
I had a old school flash artist in the midwest use a dry paper towel, he wiped so much he rubed most the stencil off and screwed it up with free handing, had it fixed and made better years later, but man i will never forget it....
A little over 2 hours for my first one yesterday and the wiping towards the end started to hurt but what bothered me the most was how much my ass hurt from sitting

Great video. This should be a required video before newbies get tattooed.
Great video man! Right to the point! I think if you REALLY want a tattoo, you should expect the pain as a medal of courage and afterwards you can show your tattoo off by showing what you went thru to get it. I think that's why tattoos are so addictive
Can’t explain tattoo pain because it is COMPLETELY different for everyone.
Always hydrate!! Hydrate! Hydrate! Start hydrating days before, and during the session. Your body has better blood, and no caffeine or very little because it is dehydrating and can cause hypersensitivity. Finally you must breathe. If you need to put in headphones and listen to meditation tapes or something. Holding one’s breath decreases blood flow, so when you do breath blood rushes to the painful area and makes the whole thing hurt so much worse.
Oonagh72 that's what I was told. I got my first tattoo on my left forearm from wrist to elbow and days before I had my artist draw it up and he said to drink water like I'm a fish. So I did and continued while getting my tattoo, sure I had to pee but the pain and the healing went by fast. Couldn't be happier 👍🏼
Oonagh72 Nnl
i was drinkin a big ass coffee before both my sessions, first one i passed out, this second one i was drinking a bit more water before hand and only felt slightly light headed, taking a break during the session helps a lot.
Also, good vibes in the shop go such a far way
caffeine does not cause hypersensitivity lol
I recently got my arm tattooed and you’re absolutely right. My wrist and elbow area I winced the most. I sat real still and didn’t move. I did ask for small breaks too to make sure I was comfortable and so was the tattoo artist. My description could be like I felt like my arm was itching and being painfully scratched. The aftermath of the healing I believe is even more painful, specially the it itchy phase.
Very informative and Straightforward I love it.

Not dissing because I understand why it would happen but I’m glad I’m not like that, my last session was legit 11 hours. It’s always good to eat and be super hydrated when going in. Eat a big breakfast and be really hydrated, then take a break halfway and eat another meal and then just ride it out.
Lol that's so funny why I wonder did u pass out 3 times
Have a few beers, a little xanax, you will be fine.
Really helpful video man, hopefully getting my first tattoo in 2 weeks and been bricking it about the pain, but the video is reassuring and I feel better about going for it!
With my tattoo artist he has a mini fridge full of free water and he suggests to get a bottle just to stay hydrated. He also asks if I'm ok and if we need to take breaks even though I don't move or flinch (I have half a sleeve and both hands done). But, artists are looking out for you and they understand if it hurts or if you need to take a breather.

Him: ....the ribs UPDATE!!: I got my first tattoo yesterday on my *rib cage* of a medium sized sun and moon face. It was not bad at all! Pain was literally 6 or 7/10 depending on the spot and if my artist was shading. The most annoying part was breathing because I had to control my breathing as she was on the ribs and the vibration! My tattoo artist was also very pleasant and gentle so I’m not sure if that helped. But I LOVE IT!

My first tattoo was a 3 quarter sleeve took about 7 hours and I remember when he first started on my wrist I didn't think I'd be able to sit through 7 hours of it but after a while you realize you want the tattoo more than you are afraid of pain. If you have second thoughts from pain then you might not want it bad enough.
Thanks, that was the best explanation video i saw. Going to get one in a few months and this helped a lot mentally :)
Best advice I could give : They hurt, get over it. You'll get the love or you'll give up.
Feels like someone dragging a needle across your skin but since its something you want you get over it.
Super informative and chill, I'm feeling better about my appointment already :)
This was very informative and helpful. Thank you
the wiping of the paper towel after about 3 hours definitely gets irritating! worst part of my last one
The artist needs to be gentle with the paper towels
The wiping feels good to me, the cold wipe on the “burnt” area is amazing
When they wipe with the dry paper towels it hurts so bad after a while but when they put a cool liquid on it then wipe feels like heaven
When my artist wiped with the cold towel it’s like the sigh of relief where you can chill for a second and then keep going
You've never had someone who dry wiped... Feels like sandpaper on a sunburn
Hours in when they dry wipe I just have to look forward to the needles it burns way more than tattoos. I got blasted with 9 needles for 5 hours worth of shading in grey Color and about hour 4 I was looking forward towards the needles again lol.
Why would anyone dry wipe if they know it’s much worse lol
Definitely agree with the wiping. It threw me off guard how much it would sting when it was being wiped.
Been a ff - medic. Had some pain dealt in my career. Good info to give out. I look forward to getting my 1st one. ! Soon.
I can’t stop staring at his two front teeth they’re so cute haha
😂😂😂😂😂
Lol I thought that to it looked kinda cute
He has the cole sprouse teeth 😂
From my experience, it's not the intensity of the pain, it's the duration. Anything over 2-hours is tough.
Agreed I've been going wild with tattoos this year. I got a half sleeve done with pieces that connect to my back and chest. I've done 4 sessions with that at about 6 hours a piece. I just did a calf piece 2 weeks ago, that took 5 hours and I hated every second of it lol
going for a 5 hour session on my forearm in 10 days super excited but lil nervous
@@ryanprisco9871 Just did a 2-hour session to removal a tattoo. Just watch a movie dude
Amazing explanation from an actual expert
This video is great and was pretty much my experience. I started small and moved towards bigger pieces as well. Honestly I was fine with my rib tattoo (it was a 3.5 hour session in one sitting) and didn't find it painful, up until around the 3 hour mark when the cloth became hell. With my rib tattoo it hurt more once it was closer to my armpit and there were sections in the middle that were quite ticklish, but overall (to me at least) it was manageable. It obviously helps if you have an artist that knows what their doing and pays attention to how you're reacting. I'd recommend taking juice with you, as that keeps your sugar levels up, and don't be afraid to take breaks if you need to.
My rib tattoo took 2 hours and I was so ready for her to finish! When she told me, we were done, I was like “Thank God!”
Chancey Nalley Only 2 hours? Must have been tiny
You’re lucky I still have 1,5-2h left on mine, first session was 3,5
The first tattoo I got was a big peice on my ribs. Thought I’d start out with a super painful place and “work down” the pain ladder lol
some people are straight g's and do it this way. i, however, am the opposite. been avoiding the ribs for as long as i remember haha
is that the most painful place
pretty much
Pain Ladder :) They all hurt like a mother! Ribs is a bitch, for me the kidneys are worse, also back of the knee, sternum, top back of the thigh, bottom and elbow ditch.
peter pan what the heck do u have tattoos everywhere lol
Well said fr shure I was looking for a video to send to a friend and this is perfect!!
I just got my first tattoo on my inner ankle and was so scared about the pain along with my fear needles. But after going through it, I have to say it wasn’t that bad. There were a couple moments it hurt more then others but definitely bearable. But I did start small!
When I get into the 4 hr mark and I'm ready to pull my hair out I always try and think "okay chill out you're hurting like hell right now but it's going to be beautiful afterwards and so worth it" and that usually helps me calm down a little. Just thinking about how happy I will be once it's over with and I have a piece of art forever
Ashley Mayer that's the right attitude. The pain is temporary, and how you handle it will be permanently displayed on your body. Just gotta go to your happy place and deal with it lol
I had to do that in the first minute of my second tattoo cause he went over a sensitive spot but after a moment of "chill it'll be worth it and you've done worse on your own" I was fine. I can't wait to get my next one which will be on my collarbone. Me and my best friend are getting "always" together
I’ve been through emotional pain Does that pain count
@M S some obviously more than others lol, take a chill pill
It actually does
Jenna Piette-Cryar I mean yeah
It does
Thank you
Just got my first tattoo in a pretty easy spot yesterday and I’m really glad I watched this first. It went from just barely above my elbow to just below my wrist, outside of the forearm. It wasn’t pleasant (well, the side of the forearm was almost ticklish), but the elbow was a completely different kind of pain. But I was at least a little ready for that because of this video. I’d say the pain felt damn near the same as when I stung by a nest of wasps. It’s a sharp pain (obviously), which is different than a throbbing pain.
Your videos are so informative. Thank you
What really hurts for me is the waiting time for the healing process. Lol
21whichiswhich And all the tattoo that peels lol
