Research shows it takes 2 weeks to make or break a habit. Looks like you've done it! Life definitely gets better but it takes time. I stopped weed and cigarettes within three months of each other. Both 20 year long addictions. My life has improved immeasurably. It's been 10 years now. I prayed to God, used the Alan Carr method and replaced the bad habits with new healthy habits but believe that everyone must find what works for them. Stay strong and vigilant. Absolute zero desire to ever drink again. No struggle, no AA, just naturally tapered off over a couple of years with the growing realisation I was through with it, until it became months between drinking occasions and the final time was my brother's wedding. It's actually easy to quit drinking, it's what comes after which is the hard bit, you're going to have to relearn how to socialise as an adult, rethink most friendships and then find new hobbies to fill the huge amount of time you've now got because you're neither drunk nor hungover anymore. Loved this video, big fan of both people in it, I relate to a lot of what Nikki is saying. I never drink alcohol until the pandemic and then I was starting drinking heavily for two years and it caused some health issues including anxiety and mild depression. I knew I had to stop and I finally quit on 12/30/22. My strategy is to watch or read about how terrible alcohol is every time I wanted a drink and it has worked so far. I love that Nikki talked about the book "the easy way to stop drinking" by Allan Carr. I've never read it and now I am curious. It is truly psychological. If you think something is easy then you are more likely to accomplish it than if you think it is difficult. This strategy applies to working out, eating healthy, starting a project.. etc.

@ I hear ya. That was my initial and long lasting crutch as well. In a social setting, I drank until fully hammered. No middle ground. All because I became talkative, social and funloving. But I guess I got lucky in that I moved and no longer had all my party friends. My interests developed in things away from solely socializing thru drinking. And was amazed how great it felt to wake up on the weekend (and some weekday) mornings without a hangover. Everyone has a their own path to walk and cross to bear. Now on the occasion I tie one on, the next day reminds me how much I don't miss that lifestyle.

Never could I imagined my life without drinking, it just seemed so boring!!! It’s been 19 months without alcohol even crossing my mind. First few weeks I just felt like I should be doing something, it was odd. Then about 30 days in you sorta beat yourself up for living your life always feeling like your about to get the flu. The only thing I regretted about quitting drinking, was that I didn’t do it 20 years earlier. The single most important thing about the book is you have to read it from the beginning to the end. Don’t skip. It’s very tempting to want to just go to the end to find the “secret”. It doesn’t work like that. You’ll ruin your chances if you do that. Whatever you do, DO NOT SKIP TO THE END!! Also: read it with an open mind. Don’t think “this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about”. Better to think: “maybe this guy is onto something here”.

It is hard, but "Ya NOT dumb". Open your mind, guys! You are your own worst enemy. And fuck the naysayers. Consistency and stubborn perseverance is the way to results. Like most things in this world, it is only as hard as you make it. I smoked cigarettes for a decade +. I fucking loved smoking. Within a single month, two people I loved very much were given a cancer diagnosis. I realized, after what they are going through, that I'd be a selfish piece of shit to smoke another cigarette 100 feet within their vicinity. I enjoyed my last one, then I quit cold turkey 10 years ago. On a side note, my best friend's brother is an alcoholic, and recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. He is in his early 40's, and can no longer stand upright on his own. Now in a wheelchair. Alcoholism has damaged his nervous system to that point. It's fucking scary what it can do to you eventually. The book changed a lot of things for me. I haven't drank alone in 2 years, and I mean not even a sip. I still drink if i go out which is nowadays 1-2 times a month and the reason for that is my anxiety. Literally the only cure that i've found for it is alcohol and I love the fact that it makes me confident and social but the book made me realize there is no need for it when im alone.

When I was about 30 years old, I smoked at least 20 cigarettes a day. I hated it but couldn't possibly imagine how to live without smoking. In the end, I read the Allen Carr book and immediately quit. A year later, I got pretty drunk and relapsed like a fool. Continued smoking for a few weeks and realized I had to do something about it. I found out that there were Allen Car Quit Smoking workshops, so I joined one (it was a full day session). At the end of the session, the guy leading the session said "if you'd like to, you can leave your cigarettes here" and pointed to the corner of the room where there was a huge pile of cigarette cartons. I threw my cigarettes and my Zippo lighter away and never smoked again. That was 20 years ago. I haven't missed it for a single minute and have never once been tempted to smoke since.

Everyone has got what it takes to stop and you have proven that by crossing the two week threshold. 💪

Yup, similar experience. Drank for much longer than the expiration date on fun had passed., years too long. Stopped the day after my 26th birthday, almost 32 now. There's nothing new to find there. Absolute zero desire to ever drink again. No struggle, no AA, just naturally tapered off over a couple of years with the growing realisation I was through with it, until it became months between drinking occasions and the final time was my brother's wedding. Not to mention all that money flushed. Life is much fuller and varied now.
I finished this book and it changed my life. Can't believe I don't want to drink again. God Bless Allen Carr and Nikki for bringing it up!
It's a fantastic book, especially for those in the music industry. Working as a full time musician as non drinker is absolutely brilliant

I quit drinking nearly 4 years ago. Read the Allen Carr book but eventually relapsed. Best book for me was kick the drink easily by Jason Vale. Absolute game changer in my opinion. It's actually easy to quit drinking, it's what comes after which is the hard bit, you're going to have to relearn how to socialise as an adult, rethink most friendships and then find new hobbies to fill the huge amount of time you've now got because you're neither drunk nor hungover anymore. Good luck to anyone choosing this path
That’s true, you have to find your identity. Most adults’ whole persona is party and drugs. That’s not a personality
@@IvoryMane exactly. And that was my vibe too, partying and drunken stories. Every story I've got prior to getting sober is a drunken tale of chaos 😂
Changing social environment is also an option. This is why i'd rather socialize with gym bros even though i don't chase muscle gain. I'm lucky enough there's no working peer pressure to have a drink tho.
You nailed it. I quit almost 4 years ago as well. I'm 42 and in full midlife crisis mode. I'm a square peg going through round holes. I don't fit in anywhere but I'm starting to be ok with that. You have to learn to be yourself and love yourself.
I quit having friends around the same time I quit drinking.

Thanks Nikki, I’ve tried for years and failed, after this podcast I bought the book and it worked I no longer drink and feel amazing, best of all I don’t miss it, once again thank you.
Seriously, the hardest part about quitting harmful behaviors, is believing that it takes some miracle. It only takes a decision.
That decision is the miracle!
It takes MANY decisions. You don't get sober once, you work to stay sober everyday when you're in recovery.
Agreed didn't even have a beer for a whole year before I realized I was technically "sober."
It's become a cascade of quitting toxic behavior for me. Started with alcohol (my biggest problem), then quit junk food, now I'm working on quitting porn.
I'd call that one of the fallacies of AA, as someone who is in it right now and feels they get a lot out of it. And as someone who would describe themselves as especially spiritual, I agree that it does not take a miracle.

6:30 this was the part that got me the most. I read this book, and it did change my life, and I thought for so long that I needed a drink to "feel nice", but really what was happening was I was relieving my anxiety, and becoming less sociable, and less confident. Since not drinking, I have learned to be more confident, and not need a substance to improve my ability to enjoy myself. Loved this video, big fan of both people in it, I relate to a lot of what Nikki is saying. Since not drinking I no longer feel the need to relieve my anxiety with alcohol, instead I can actually process them healthier, and deal with issues as they come up, instead of "oh man could I go for a drink"

@@BrewCrew-tq8oy That's what makes it a "former" alcoholic......
Janice P yeah. that 2 drink thing is a bit odd. if she actually was having raging hangovers from 2 drinks she must have been an incredibly heavy drinker for years. Reduced tolerance only occurs after many years of extremely intense drinking, but it does happen.
JaimeG88 lol! Yep. People without a drinking problem will never quite understand an Alcoholic’s brain. There was literally NEVER such a thing as two drinks to me. For 30 years it was none or ten. One day I decided it had to be none....permanently.
This strategy applies to working out, eating healthy, starting a project.. etc.
I stopped 31/12/22. I am listening to podcasts about how bad alcohol is. I could never stop drinking, when I had one, I would always have more and more, blacking out, hanxiety, getting into arguments with the people I love... It's not worth it
Get the book! I got the audiobook. It’s more than “if you think it’s easy, it’s easy”, but it will change the way you think about alcohol but you simply won’t want to drink by the end of the book. You’ll be literally elated that you’re finally free of alcohol. You’re relieved that you don’t have to drink anymore.

Hey, man! Me too!
I just found this video and bought the book today. I definitely need it
"first the man takes a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes the man"
Lose the drink takes a drink bit and it'll make sense
How does a drink take a drink? Fucker
@@tdawg719 because alcohol effects the brain center regulating impulse; it causes a phenomenon of craving. So, the drink has the drink, anon
@@real_lynnblades what you said makes sense up until the drink has the drink part. Just change the words to some that actually make sense and describe what happens and it will be a much better saying all the way around.
Can’t recommend this book enough. I quit drinking the same way and have touched a drop in 9 years.
It really works!!! Bought the book on Amazon & Listened to the audiobook on KZhead. I drank 18+ beers 4 days a week my entire adult life. Wanted to do something special for my 40th birthday. EVERYTHING IS MORE FUN NOT DRINKING!!!
great work. keep going !
Damn, good for you! Do you got any keys in the book that helped you the most?
@@Justafayze there is a part that really puts in perspective what relaxing really is, and alcohol is not it. Alcohol raises your blood pressure & respirations, makes you sweat more, bloats you, and makes you nauseous just to name a few. The exact opposite of what relaxing is.
This Friday will be four weeks sober for me. Trying to keep it going. Wish me luck.
Good job dude.

Joe’s the friend who tells you he’s happy you quit an alcohol addiction then says “wanna fake beer?”.
Joe “fake beer tastes good” Rogan. It had to be said.
Joseph Brown it is my favorite tasting beer... try odules
For someone that has had some fairly in-depth conversations about addiction, Joe seems oblivious to this kind of stuff lol.
Absolutely! He's that guy everyone knows who thinks doing drugs magically qualifies them as an expert. He honestly was telling Artie Lange on his podcast, that just because he's a recovering heroin addict doesn't mean he can't drink alcohol.
Shammy Cat i remember seeing that. I’ve been thinking for a few years now that Joe is a couple bad decisions away from realizing he’s an addict himself. It’s amazing how he has no concept of how serious drug/alcohol addiction really is. He is either stupid or purposely not accepting it.
A moment of silence for those still sick and suffering 🖤
This clip changed my life. I also drank every night for like 20 years. I didn't think I could ever quit. I read the book because of this video clip, and I walked away. Makes me cry thinking about it. My mindset about drinking has always been, "One is too many and ten is not enough!"
one is never enough, therefore one is always too many
I completely understand. I pass up single random beers every time. I want to sit with a cooler and enjoy my 20 beers. I'm so glad i'm not the only one that thinks this way.
The AA slogan (one of many) is "ONE is too many and a THOUSAND is never enough"
I get this. Once I’m on: I’m ON
Allen Carr, "smoking is like putting on an uncomfortable shoe just to enjoy the pleasure of taking it off." Why put the shoe on in the 1st place?
She's right, I drank a fifth of bourbon everyday for almost three years. I lived in a blackout. One morning on the way to work, freshly showered, my friend asked me how much I had to drink the night before, I said "too much, why"? She said, I can smell it coming out of your skin. . . "You have to want to quit" is the actual answer.
I read a book about all bad things that alcohol does to your body. And since I read that book, I promised myself that I will never going to read it again.
I was hit by a drunk driver when I was fifteen and was nearly killed, as a result I promised myself I would never drink. My friends always tried to get me to drink but when I saw them throw up on themselves, it only encouraged me to stay sober. I've also lost family members, as young as fifty-five, who have died from kidney, liver or complete internal organ damage from drinking. I say all this only to encourage people to quit if they are thinking about quitting - you may live a longer and healthier life!

@@MrRoundthetwist as do I. But that's an idiotic thing to say to someone who is sober.
I’m proud of Joe for not being too skeptical, for not playing devils advocate, basically for not being his typical self, when her book seemed like a easy target to go after. I think he saw her belief in the book helped her fight her addiction so he left it alone
Joe Rogan is like a modern day Larry King: Prompts great discussion and doesn't step on the interviewee if he feels they're being genuine and dropping truth. Also, I think he's genuinely hungry for perspective and is keen to listen, and that's honestly what we need more of in our society and government: better listeners.

Mike amen, I’m at that point. I’d only disagree about her saying no side effects. I don’t have any remotely serious ones like DT’s but I sweat like crazy for the first 5 days and very little sleep. Otherwise it’s not bad at all, need to stick to it this time though, took 2 months off during summer after drinking heavy for a while, but took only one visit to a baseball game with friends to bring the raging 🥃 alcoholic back. Probably will check out the book and train my mind if I’m thinking of relapsing for whatever reason. This stuff sucks and is a major waste of time and money. Luckily only stay home and drink or else I’d be broke for sure

The best book I ever read on quitting alcohol was “The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober” by Catherine Gray. It has truly made being sober “easy” for me
I quit alcohol cold turkey (lucky I didn’t die) because of the song Wasted by Dax and a guy on IG who would create satirical videos of what his patterns and habits were back when he was a raging alcoholic before his wife died of cirrhosis. I cried and I cried because I was so stuck in my addiction. Never thought I would be free and healthy. I’m now 1 year and 2 months sober. Life is better and the people around me are thinking healthier and at least cutting back themselves. I’m never going back to drinking again, but I do miss a lot of the feelings Nikki mentioned.

Man, I watch your videos. Have you still stayed sober? I also finished this book 3 days ago, will see how it goes
I've been thinking this for years. This widespread 'meme' (or whatever you want to call it) about smoking being hard to quit is the number 1 reason people don't quit. They've given up before they really try
If you ever doubt how much badass potential you could have, think of David Goggins. Search youtube JRE David Goggins.
That’s called an idea bro, your comment is a meme.
Yeah, that's BS. Anything that is an addiction is extremely difficult to stop.
It's been exactly one month since my last drink and about 6 years without a cigarette.
Matthias keep it going brother, this poison can’t control you if you don’t let it. Waste of time, money and everything else negative that comes with it

Hi, try mucuna for anxiety
You just have to learn have to socialize while sober. It takes months. I'm the same way. Took me about half year to feel comfortable in social situations, like party or wedding.
I read the book after watching this video and it actually worked for me. I'm 1 month sober and feel great!
She said, “you get that voice drunk.” Damn if that doesn’t perfectly explain every time I go out.
Came to post exactly this.
I have never heard someone explain it as perfectly as that. I even argue with the voice, that I infact do not need another drink, just as one gets placed in front of me. You cheeky bastard!
I always say I'm gonna just go out with friends or stay at home and have 2 drinks. But when you're two drinks in, you want to maintain that feeling so you get another one. And another one. But you're not maintaining, you're getting drunker and drunker because you're always gonna be drunker 20 minutes later than you feel at that moment.
