The Green Knight, after getting his head chopped off:"Tis but a flesh wound."
Your comment reminds me of a sketch from " Monty Python " . 🦶🐍👽🤺🏰🧙♀️🧟
I think he's light headed
That is what "The Black Knight" said. The Green Knight would have to come up with something better.
It will grow back, right?
@@christopherlewis1315 I think he just put it back on when he left.
The moral of the poem goes so much further than “lying is bad,” it reflects the immense impact of the chivalric code and the role the church played in forming the men of that time, it’s definitely worth a deeper analysis
Spencer Klavan’s podcast on the poem was fantastic, and the translation by Simon Armitage is fantastic.
A promise made is a promise kept
It also is about the church taking over the pagan gods and nature. Remember that no matter the game, nature will win. So be brave while playing, we all end the same.
Everyone always gives a hard time to the church for the bad its done is the past ignoring all the good its done like stopping slavery, feeding the sick and poor, giving shelter to the needy, caring for orphans, and so much more, the church in the past was held to such a high regard that it was pretty much the government, and as with our present governments, there are those who climb the ranks with no intent to improve the country but instead to destroy and steal and conive but for some reason the church is blamed like they've only ever orchestrated the worst atrocities in history
@@ridgefrost The church is held to a high standard, unlike secular governments. So anything bad that the church did in the past will be brought up and scrutinized. And it's not like you can sweep the bad things the church did under the rug and say "oh look at the good", the church definitely needs to repent, and they're some sins the church hasn't repented yet. Such as the sexual abuse scandals that still persist to this very day, or the covering up of mass grave sites of indigenous people.
I love how dude picks up his severed head and is like “see ya next year!”
Power move
The Green Knight: *picks up own head* One, year, hence. Sir Gawain: Dammit, I knew I should have went with a scratch like he said!
The Green Knight: “One year hence lol”
Green Knight: "You can hit me and in one year I'll return the blow." Ganwin: hmmm .. Should I use lethal force? Yes, it will be hilarious!
well they figured if they killed the guy he wouldnt be able to repay the blow
He's fucking green that fool ain't normal would not risk it
The point of the challenge is that you can't take the easy way out. Everyone is watching, so if you give him a tiny nick, you look like a coward in the eyes of everyone. It's a game of chicken where the objective is to give him the strongest blow you are willing to receive in turn. Gawain is reckless and thinks he can get out of it proving himself brave and strong without accepting the return blow.
@@whitewolfO1 then give him a strong non lethal blow
@@whitewolfO1 Why is it brave to kill someone who has bent over to let you do it and won't fight back though? Gawain's a dick, he doesn't deserve a head.
I hope we see other live action adaptations of other King Arthur characters. Arthurian legends are underrated. The best King Arthur movie so far is Excalibur(1981) Hopefully we get more dark fantasy-like King Arthur films
I would love to see Le Morte d’Arthur adapted as a TV series. But of course that sounds REALLY expensive. What quality entertainment isn’t?
That was a great movie
Young sexy ass helen mirren yes
My favorite adaptation (though probably not the most canonically accurate) would be *Merlin 1998* . Starring; Sam Neil, Helena Bonham Carter and Miranda Richardson.
Love Excalibur! The best Arthurian story, I think..of course Richard Harris' performance on Broadway was exceptional!
We are now a consistent content creator again
Very cool! 💓
Yay!
Sean Connery played the Green Knight in Sword of the Valiant.
Can you do the 7 Archangels
Awesome video as always, glad to hear you plan on being more consistent! Hope to see more Arthurian stuff too! The Green Knight film coming out looks pretty good imho, might be my first theater experience in almost two years lol
"And who are you?" "The Knight....The Green Knight..." cue Bond music.
I wonder how many people don't understand your reference?! lol
@@MarkLewis... I wonder how many of the upvotes do get the reference.
Wow. A man of culture, I see. Nice reference, good sir! Nice reference indeed.
I still remember writing a report on this story back in high school. We were allowed to take a creative writing approach to the intro paragraph, so I wrote a short story in the second person about a knight being mortaly wounded in a dual, but still being expected to fight on. My teacher went around the room as we were writing, to check in and give feedback. "We're one paragraph in and you've disembowled the reader" may be my favorite ever reaction to an academic paper.
2nd person is rarely done. Also yes awesome comment
Care to share the paper?

"mortality wounded in a dual" Did you graduate high school?
When I was younger I would lose myself in the lore of Arthur and his knights of the round table.
Me too, also with robin hood
Growing up, I burned my days with Arthurian Legend and kids my age thought I was weird.
The upcoming Green Knight adaptation is not a hollywood big budget movie. It´s made by independent studio A24 that made several highly praised movies, so I dont think it will be a big failure.
@@juliaj7939 I hope A24 does produce movies about Indian myth. I've seen a lot of people riled up by this casting Julia, but I think the truth is that Hollywood does not, or at least has not, throughout history, provided actors of color many roles to shine. For example, there have been ballpark 50 films about Arthurian legend, but very few hollywood films about African mythology, Native American mythology, Indian Mythology, etc. I think Dev Patel is an excellent choice for this role, and as someone who has read and studied Arthurian myth, I'm quite excited to see this film.
@@juliaj7939 Like how Scarlett Johanson playing a Japanese woman in Ghost in the Shell and Jake Gylenhall play middle eastern character from Prince of Persia? Get out of here with your race baiting.
@@qtvsfelonycharge8034 at least those actors look like the character they are playing, can't say the same for gawain
@@juliaj7939 jesus christ Julia, find something important to be pissy about.

@@wolftitanreading5308 I was gonna say that’s incest but the original myths so yeah
The whole point in the movie is that he betrayed the lord far before the last night BECAUSE he refused to also sleep with the lord and instead just gave him kisses like before. Bro was doomed.
Fun fact: Adventure time made a reference to this story where a green night with a green axe challenges Finn to party games. I won’t spoil it for anyone even though it’s been years since the finale.
Fern can not be confused with anyone
@@chanbricks4461 yes he can.
@@chanbricks4461 he showed up with a new look and said “I’m the green knight” I just rewatched the episode today.
"And now, my brave knight, off with your head"
Now that the 2021 adaptation has been released, I’d be intrigued to hear your assessment about it given your knowledge of and affinity for the poem.
Me too!
The 2021 movie is crap, very little like the poem, and the movie suffers for it.
@@perniciouspete4986 why? I thought it was quite well done despite its strangeness because it diverges from the source material which is understandably, but detrimentally, simplistic by comparison.
@@mindliss92 I now present to you the most historically-accurate Arthurian tale ever told: "Once upon a time there was a roman general who protected a fort in what is now England. He had a sword that was called "sword." Also, in perhaps another time, there was a crazy old bard wandering around Wales. The End."
We’ll see about the film coming out. Dev Patel’s been in a number of really great films of late so for once, I’m optimistic 👍🏻
The first time I ever heard about The Green Knight was in Netflix’s Cursed. I wish that it wasn’t a miniseries but that a s2 was on the way, it’s not. Even if the character is totally different and only shares the name, but still.
The film is astonishingly powerful, and respects its viewers and its source material. I highly recommend it.
I would respectfully disagree. The Green Knight is an artistic piece first and Arthurian tale second. I found the ending particularly heinous and confusing, and I would not recommend. Though if you have seen it then I wouldn't mind hearing other reviews. Perhaps I missed something.
@@grinninggoblin3698 The ending is one of VERY few subversions that actually works... SPOILERS. . . . . . . . . . . . I though the first ending we got was going to be it and I was disappointed that they went with a "what if" and had Gawain fail his quest and lie about it. It was a bit interesting with what happened after King Arthur died after making Gawain heir and see that in the end, he was always weighed down by the sash he had on. After taking it off and accepting his death, he woke up to being in the green chapel again and decided to take off the sash. This rebuilt his character from growing, flawed, but well intentioned knight, to someone worth of the title and story to tell. It is a perfect subversion because it then rebuilt him back and for the better. Hollywood fails at subversion because they don't bother rebuilding and thus the subversion becomes destruction.
@@crocidile90 that's an understandable way of looking at it. SPOILERS BELOW: . . . . . . . . . . . I saw Gawain not as a well intentioned knight trying to live up to the legends that are the other knights, but as a self-serving jerk. He is a dishonorable man, and a coward. In the ending he witnesses a vision of his life should he run away in which he spends the rest of his life as a miserable and dishonorable man. When he wakes in the chapel he choses to die. I saw this not as redemption, but as resignation. If he cannot live honorably then he should die honorably. That is the message I took from the film. In the written story I saw Gawain as a man trying his best, but with doubts that in the end the Green Knight corrects. In the film Gawain is a knave who gives up on life. In short, it isn't a hopeful redemption, but the final failure of a fool. It's the culmination of Gawain's actions in the film and vision that paint him so poorly. It doesn't help that we cut the scene after the Green Knight chops in which motivations are shared and explored.
So gawain was kissing the wife and the lord everytime he was presented a gift?
Kinky
What a chad
Mind you, she was kissing him, Gawain is too chad to fuck another mans wife

The film was brilliant! The changes made to the story really got to the heart of it's message. The inversion of his successes and failures is incredibly impactful.
@@erdelegy the green Knight was definitely just joking around with him at the end, since the whole thing was orchestrated by his mother.
Again a great video as usual. Love all myths especially arthurian . Please keep them coming. Have never been disappointed
I would hardly call the adaptation a "Hollywood Film," considering A24 took the reigns. I just got back from seeing it and while it takes some liberties with the story. I think the ending had a lot more weight to it than I expected.
I actually liked it more than the original story haha SPOILERS: Seeing Gawain's success and failures flipped in this version made for a much more satisfying journey in my opinion - and seeing him earn his Knighthood was fantastic. Absolutely adored the film!
Total bugman movie. More subversion of European folklore and culture
It was actually awesome the sound design on the green knight was insane every time he moved you could feel it
I enjoyed A24's The Green Knight. While some interpretations were just that - interpretations, I felt the film honored the original source material well in spirit if not line by line. Far from Hollywood's interpretations and much more enjoyable IMO.

Always enjoy your content. As an aspiring amateur writer, whose working mainly on a comic/graphic novel with my brother right now, that uses Arthurian tales/lore/locations/characters etc. I'm really excited to see you dive into these.
There's a big chunk of this story that is very similar to one surrounding Cu Chulainn. In the story about Cu, there is a giant again who visits and challenges Cu to cut off his head, with the promise that Cu allow himself to have his head cut off by the giant later on. Cu seems to be angered by the challenge but ends up decapitating the giant with such force that its head bounces off the ceiling, the floor, and the ceiling again (if memory serves). The giant walks off with his head, stating that he'll return to see if Cu upholds his end of the bargain. Cu makes no attempt to flee, though he is very visibly irritable. When it comes to upholding the promise, Cu doesn't back out, and so the giant acknowledges Cu's courage and states to all that Cu Chulainn should receive the "Hero's Portion" of a meal. I wonder if perhaps that similarity between the two stories could have resulted in The Green Knight not being a popular story in the past. Or perhaps there's another reason I'm not aware of.
I love lore about Cu.
Some people think Gawain is a welsh corruption of Cuchullain, not sure how true that is

My favorite story from the Arthurian Legend.
one of my alma maters is St. Norbert College in Wisconsin and has the Green Knight as their mascot but I always liked Arthurian legend even before I attended.
this story reminds me of a story of Cu Chulainn I read once. it has been a while so I'm a little rusty, but if memory serves, there was a disagreement about the bravery of the men of Ulster, so a magician who served the local lord hid himself as a large man with an axe, and issued a challenge, to receive a blow that would be repaid the next night. the first man did not believe he would survive and fled, and the next challenger fled, but Cu Chulainn redyed himself, only for the blow to fall harmlessly next to him, with the magician revealing himself and Cu Chulainn being recognized for his bravery.
