The gelatin inside Stretch Armstrongs seems to function similar to non-newtonian fluids, where they act like a goop when just sitting there, but under impact and stress they become rigid and very resistant. The higher the impact and speed, the more resistant they become. This could be why they are so successful at stopping bullets of nearly any variety. I'm curious what the recently showcased 4 Bore would do to some of these.

The fluid they are filled with actually is non-Newtonian.
I am super impressed with Stretch's durability and impact absorption.
Idk what it is, but that jelly they fill them with seems to be really good at absorbing impact
What I learned from this video: Stretch Armstrong is level 3A, Scott is a kind heart that actually keeps his oath to his community to protect and serve. God bless everyone, especially those affected by the tornado.
Dang. I came here to say this. Lol
Scott made a video with Demo Ranch where they made a "plate" out of stretch Armstrong liquid. It was very effective.

WTF?!? What are these made of?? Looks like very effective in stopping bullets...
Corn syrup...
Very effective in dispersing energy it seems
I’d like to see body armour made from it
pretty sure TKOR found out that it was just corn syrup of some kind
Probably silicone. A bit thicker than boob silicone though!
Thats crazy, I did not think a stretch Armstrong would be that effective at stopping pistol rounds. The high speed camera footage is cool.
Of course once the head blows off no slo mo of that one

You may have just discovered a new type of body armor material. That was insane how well the stretch armstrong material absorbed energy.

People often say "why don't they make bullet proof vests out of this or that crazy thing", but seriously, someone should actually try putting a layer of Stretch Armstrong in a typical soft Kevlar vest and see how it works lol
I was just thinking this. I'm sure there'd be a market for a fluid body armor that can stop a .44.
@@Majima_Nowhere Combine it with a backing of Kevlar and I think you'd have a pretty decent product

Sweet, new idea for bullet proof vest, wearing several of these at once. Thanks!!!!!!!
An arrow from a bow or crossbow might be interesting. Since the stretch Armstrongs are filled with a non newtonian fluid of sorts a significantly slower projectile might slice through then far easier
@Nathaniel Shrock I think 2 tops.
@Nathaniel Shrock broad head would spread the energy out way to much you would get better results on this with a simple target tip.

bullet-proof jacket 2040: made with stretch armstrongs
I'd like to see small high velocity projectiles hit stretch, or even better make a ballistic gel block of similar make up to the contents of it. So weird that it seems to deform like ballistic gel on the high speed but can stop at a much shorter distance. I thought it would be like ooblek in there but it seems to have a polymer like elasticity. When you see me in the helmet and vest made of stretch armstrongs at least we'll know I'm not crazy
It is similar to oobleck, but thicker. It's filled with a modified corn starch. It's semi gelatinous when sitting still, malleable like clay when being stretched, and hard as a freakin rock when hit (believe me, been on both ends of some Stretch induced blunt force trauma.)
I'm absolutely blown away by the bullet stopping effectiveness of stretch Armstrong. Like seriously, wow.
The dolls are made of some amazingly tough material ! Damn ! I thought the dolls would have been destroyed with the size of that round, but they sent it off on a tangent very quickly instead.

It missed us too! My aunt and uncle were out camping i believe, and apparently it tore through the place like a freight train.
Thank you, I have wanted this my whole life 👍🏻 just make a vest out of them
The slow motion footage was epic! 🤣👍🏻
Kind of interesting that the ones you hit with the lower calibers seemed to still be viscous on the inside. Yet the 700 nitro remnants look hard and brittle? Is that the heat from the round? Or some sort of shock? More testing should be done to see what's happening here. KZhead likes science questions, right?
The shock. The stuff inside Stretch behaves similarly to oobleck, but thicker. It's just modified corn starch, after all. It moves like molasses with gentile pressure or sitting, but if you hit it hard enough it acts like a solid because it doesn't compress very well. The pistol rounds weren't destructive enough to the outer skin to show it hardening like that.
I haven't handled one of the new Armstrongs but when I was a kid in the early 1970s every boy I knew had one, not because we played with them but because they were great weapons. The original ones were quite heavy and the torso felt like it was weighted. When you grabbed it by the legs and swung it around you could literally beat somebody to death with it. Many a fight ended quickly when a boy had his trusty Stretch.
Haha the ones from the 90s were the same. Idk about the new ones. But I remember getting and dealing a lot of heavy blows with them.
@Josh ??? Oh God I remember those too. Pretty sure I've still got a scar on the back of my head from one of them.

Surprisingly I’m not that surprised😂 I remember Stretch Armstrongs back in the 90s, they were filled with more of a brown material but seemed to be just as weird and durable as these newer ones. If you pulled or pushed them slowly they’d stretch or form a lot but an impact they were surprising hard and in unfazed. Watching them stop bullets as an adult is hilarious.

@@richardpeterson3753 we're safe. We were incredibly fortunate to have it miss us.
I'm waiting (patiently) for Scott to get a 4 bore shotgun. Seems like a perfect addition to the big bore high energy guns Scott likes to demonstrate for us. I'm aware they are pretty rare and ridiculously expensive. However, I would love to see some of these tests done with that monster of a projectile. I'm sure a lot of other viewers would love to see it too
4 bore black powder shotgun is equivalent to a modern full power 12 gage slug, both are about 5000 foot pounds, black powder automatically makes it 3-4x weaker. Also .700 nitro starts about 2x more expensive than a 4 bore shotgun and gets into the realm of 100k-250k. If you want purely unnecessary power then might as well go for the top with .950 JDJ, that's 38k foot pounds, like 3x more power than 50 bgm, pretty sure 20mm vulcan is the only thing out there that is more powerful.
@@whatsmolly5741 numbers are great and all, thanks for your information. But there are absolutely no videos on KZhead of a 4 bore being shot into ballistic gel. We only ever see people taking the recoil of the gun. We were all mesmerized by the way the 700 nitro just obliterated these Stretch Armstrong dolls. All I'm saying is, "I wonder how awesome a quarter pound of lead would do it." But now I'm wondering about the .950. Because you're right about the black powder limitations(hence the massive projectile weight of the 4 bore). I hadn't thought to look up videos demonstrating the power of that round on a target.
