I'm always intrigued by how the Camerlengo is ready for self-inmolation, up until the point he actually does it and instantly realizes that no amount of faith is gonna help the next few agonizing moments as his body disintegrates. Also, loved how menacing the Swiss Guard looked, like wolves out for blood. It makes sense, since they're chaeged with the protection of the Pope and the Vatican, so not inly are they very well trained, but they'd be furious beyond words adter learning that this man murdered their greatest charge, and highest honor.

@@PhilipTrouble thats... not how it works. You first need to regret your sins in order to be forgiven. This, a suicide in the place where the Popes rest in peace + asking for Gods's mercy while thinking all what he did was justified, is a direct ticket to hell.
@christiantarnoski1231 Жыл бұрын
@@christiantarnoski1231Not necessarily, his death was sealed either way. Suicide is a sin because it’s against the will of God to throw away the gift of life. Considering how he was doomed to die either way, this could be interpreted as martyrdom. Of course the Camerlengos intentions were not pure, but he believed them to be, so in his own mind, his self immolation does not lead to hell
@PhilipTrouble Жыл бұрын
There's confusion in these comments, so I'll explain the Catholic view. Murder is a sin, including if that murder is yourself, BUT let's remember that us Catholics view God as merciful, and most who choose suicide are dealing with serious mental illnesses which can affect one's conscious on the matter. We cannot say whether a person who committed suicide is in hell or not, but we can say that suicide is a sin, and that sins cause separation from God, the source of all goodness. Separation from that leaves only bad, that is what we call hell. So does a person who committed suicide send them to hell? Circumstantial and we do not know personally where they go because God will judge them Himself whether they were a friend of His or not, but committing sins do not help your case, and suicide and murder in general is sinful. Martyrdom is regarded as holy, but his actions cause his death to not be martyrdom.

When he dropped from the sky, I was in awe, but then it made me realized as if a “fallen angel” saved the city, a fallen angel everyone will remember as a saint
Didnt think of that. Nice observation.
yeah it symbolizes fallen angel.
and then the BURNING, symbolizes eternal suffering
the way those cardinals look at him, it would send shivers down my spine
I’m more terrified at the looks the Swiss Guard sent him. You don’t murder their Holy Charge and get away with it.

When the Dean of the College of Cardinals said to a member of the Swiss guards about the Camerlengo to do it gently but within our walls, meant of what happens at the Vatican stays there without the public knowing about it.
Karl Ahlf You're right bro
So either way he was gonna die but they couldn’t let the public know everything that happened before that, how he rigged the Illuminati to become pope

A movie that can invoke such emotion, that's good writing. Sadly lacking in so many movies being produced since the mid teens.
This is karma, Obi Wan
Completely brother!!
Dr. Shreyash Lal ye we know but what he meant was karma for burning to death because of in another movie he let someone nearly burn to death. It wasn’t because of what he did in this movie.
@Dr. Shreyash Lal No, that would be Buddhist Karma not Hindu Karma. Hinduist Karma is literally just any action you ever take, affecting what realm you are incarnated into. Buddhist Karma is where good or bad actions effect you personally.
Damn!!!! karma is heartless....
When he enters the room: Hello There! Cardinal Kenobi, you're a bold one!
LOL
😂
I'm always intrigued by how the Camerlengo is ready for self-inmolation, up until the point he actually does it and instantly realizes that no amount of faith is gonna help the next few agonizing moments as his body disintegrates. Also, loved how menacing the Swiss Guard looked, like wolves out for blood. It makes sense, since they're chaeged with the protection of the Pope and the Vatican, so not inly are they very well trained, but they'd be furious beyond words adter learning that this man murdered their greatest charge, and highest honor.
I’m not sure. Considering he branded himself just a few minutes before his self immolated, I think he knew what he was in for, and yet did it anyway.
Plus he tricked them into shooting their own boss aswell
Don’t forget he also killed their Commander of the Swiss Guard.
I see his self-immolation in contrast with examples like that Buddhist monk in Vietnam. He wanted to be a noble martyr for God but he based his decision on desperation and fear, not pure conviction and dedication; so when the fateful moment arrives he doesn't have the stones to present an admirable self-sacrifice, just a pathetic and pitiful one.
when you don't have the high ground
Fuck I was gonna make a high ground joke but I wasn't fast enough
Zant same
One of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen.
In the book, the Camarlengo does it in front of the public
And he does it out of guilt when he learns that the pope he killed was his father
Oh that would've been better! Why dint they do that?
Book can never be showed in movie perfectly! Because movie has so much limits. But book can create everything in imagination.
That final scream is positively blood curdling
Ever Damn time I watch a clip with ewan, I get flooded by high ground jokes. 🤣

It is fascinating to see the college of cardinals did not confront him verbally after knowing the truth, instead they scold him with menacing silence.
I was genuinely surprised by this twist when I first saw it. Also a little sad. Not used to obi wan playing the villain
It broke my heart...I really wanted him to live to the end to see the new Pope...
I knew it from the beginning. my gut feeling told me he is the bad guy, but for some reason it didn't fit with the logic.

His face at the end was like “Jesus Christ” no pun intended there. For some reason I think this scene is brilliant and fantastic but in a twisted way.

Not a catholic myself, but as far as I know a catholic thinks suicide as a sin.. The book showed a better explanation of why he did this, but I dont think a priest would think he would reach the heaven by burning himself to death..
Suicide is sinful, but he asked god for mercy right before he set himself on fire, meaning he will go to heaven regardless. One could even argue that he inflicted his own purgatory upon himself by setting himself on fire
Maybe he wanted to go to hell. Maybe he thought he deserved it.
@@PhilipTrouble thats... not how it works. You first need to regret your sins in order to be forgiven. This, a suicide in the place where the Popes rest in peace + asking for Gods's mercy while thinking all what he did was justified, is a direct ticket to hell.
Martyrdom is regarded as holy, but his actions cause his death to not be martyrdom.
he was a sadistic religious nut but the trembling in his voice as he says his last words i couldn't help but to feel a bit sorry for him and the movie was as the one before it (the da vinci code) simply brilliant
Obi-Wan has now joined the force

2:28 obi wan when he has the low ground
Unimaginable pain, it would feel like an eternity but would be a few minutes at most, maybe less depending on the accelerant used.
With a full body intense burn like that, I’m guessing he would lose consciousness in less than a minute, but it would be a pretty unimaginably horrible minute.
That head Cardinal gave him a look that I will never forget oml

Yes. It was his first book in the series that's why. I saw the movie, and then read the book. The book has so much details, I'm not even a gung ho book reader but it was amazing to read about Vatican, and Rome.
All the cardinals start throwing bibles at him: YOU SHAME US ALL....
I've always been amazed by this scene. It's even more amazing that no words were spoken between the camerlengo and the cardinals. Simply the glances and understanding. Even after that he was not ready to accept defeat. He was going to the people outside, to fabricate another story and use them to achieve his final goal. Only when he saw that the paths were blocked he chose to set himself on fire.
