A lot of what you see is his ability to keep a conversation going. He makes his guests feel like they are just in a room with a couple of friends, not being watched by millions. He's very technical in his approach when it comes to getting people to talk more. He's a really good conversationalist. i'm somali, the country is a failed state. It doesn't mean there isn't a form of government as there has always been a system of clans with elder members at the top. There are 5 main clans with sup clans below them splitting off until it reaches local community level. People have had to scrap and fight to survive for nearly 30 years so now you have 2 generations of somali men who have known that by using violence they can get whatever they want. Their power has got them so much fear that they have control over areas a whole clan used to run. Anyone who stands up to them gets murdered and when you can control the wages of the police then you have total dominance. On top of all this you have foreign agencies and militaries finically support whoever is willing to let them achieve there goals, leading to an all out shit show. I miss my country, used to be so beautiful!

Somalia is quite underrated on the scale of the most dangerous destinations in the world. When I was about 10 back in the late 80s at school in New Zealand a teacher there had her husband taken hostage and was held captive for years also. It was big news at the time and nobody knew what the outcome would be. Amazingly she tried to keep her spirits high and just continued on with her job as in those days there wasn't really any other option. It was amazing when we learnt he had been released. That was one of the biggest news stories of that era in my homeland

It was peaceful with a functioning government back then. My parents took me from DC to Mogadishu in 1988. I have pictures of my childhood at the Lido Beach and Urubo Hotel. I grew up near the village where the Somali pirates started. My people didn’t decide to become pirates for the fun of it. They’re fisherman who became pirates because they grew sick of westerns, Arabs, and Asians stealing fish and dumping toxic waste in the ocean which would kill off whatever fish they left behind. You have to understand during this time people were fishing to live another day. At first they would chase the ships until they left our shores but eventually warlord took things to another level.

In a lane adorned with eloquent verse, where hearts find solace in poetic embrace, a tapestry of voices weaves a symphony of beauty. Among them, the Somalis stand as an enigma, a testament to courage and valor unmatched. They embody the spirit of lion-hearted warriors, yet their souls overflow with generosity and kindness. Gratitude fills our hearts, for in the grand tapestry of nations, these noble souls do not wield the powers of the West, China, or Russia. And as such, they remain untainted, preserving the purity of their essence, a beacon of untamed grace.

i'm somali, the country is a failed state.

Michael's book was one of the most remarkable books I've ever read. I love hearing him talk about it but you have to read it if you want to understand how wild his experience was.
Nah Somalia is the most amazing country, Somalians not living in Somalia on the internet told me so.
😂😂😂😂😂😂💀
Is there really a debate about such things? Or is just the assumption that everyone is trying to defend nations that are in turmoil or without order.
@@Treatsandthreadscom It's usually Somali kids from immigrant parents living in Europe being stupid. For example one of my best friends growing up emigrated from Ethiopia and was getting harassed by second generation Somalis who thought Somalia was the best country on the planet and only "held down" so to speak by the Ethiopian boogeyman.
CAT DURGS it’s true though the west uses Ethiopia to help down Somalia The west have been using Ethiopia against Somalia for centuries and it’s not like the west likes Ethiopia more than Somalia but they found servants amongst Ethiopian regimes especially tplf who thought if they obey the western demands to be servants for the west they can stay in power forever
CAT DURGS you said Ethiopia is a boogeyman but don’t you know there Ethiopian army mercenaries in Somalia of course paid and bought by the west as we speak right now?

SOMALIAN PIRATES WEEEEEEEEEEE
I am Somali and the thing about pirates caused is like drug dealers, if u see chance for making millions there is definitely people who will do like cartels.
Pirates are less brutal though. In extreme cases they might kill you. All the want is money. They are not interested in hurting you.

I worked in the London construction industry in the 2000s. I worked with a Somali former missile engineer who worked as a labourer, a Somali former university lecturer who worked as a handyman, and a Somali former fighter pilot who had trained in Czechoslovakia, along with other Somalis, who were generally smart and friendly. Interestingly, the older ones had experience of training with Warsaw Pact and US troops, as Somalia went from being a Soviet client state to an American one in the 1980s.
beatonthedonis47 Somalia used to be one of the greatest countries in Africa. Mogadishu used to be the headquarters of the African Union. Watching videos before the civil war shows a world of difference.

Tim O'donnell Underrated in dangerous places? I live here buddy and I’ve never came across any “danger” or “terrorist attack” these type of stuff are very rare and when it does happen it’s usually only a few who are killed.
@@itzfusionplex4266 Well I've lived in several countries with many Somali refugees who have no desire to go back. They all tell me the same story
@@timotot123 in the late 80s that is when the civil war was starting, what do you expect?
Tim O’donnell What a lie you told here. Somalia failed as a state between 1990 and 1991. In the 1970’s to 1980’s Somalia was the place to go to vacation in Africa. It was peaceful with a functioning government back then. My parents took me from DC to Mogadishu in 1988. I have pictures of my childhood at the Lido Beach and Urubo Hotel. There were alcoholic beverages and amazing seafood. I remember the incredible taste of tropical fruits as a kid.
"Amazingly she tried to keep her spirits high and just continued on with her job " you mean after she came back to NZ
This guy seems completely stable considering he was held captive, good on him

Fact, Somali pirates came about when foreign fishing vessels would invade Somali national waters and illegally catch fish and basically ran the locals main food source dry. It was pretty justified at the beginning but then they realized stealing shit is a lot more productive than catching fish.
And not all of them were/are fishermen. Just Somalis seeing an income opportunity.
Thats not totally true, the fish are all dead due to foreign pollution of Somalian waters, i.e plastic and land fill. I know a couple of Somalians i was shocked when they told me what was happening there.
Nope, they didn't even have nets before westerners gave them that tech. No way did they have this fishing paradise full of peace and love and freedom. If not for forigners stopping them they would still be enslaving each other and without forigners sending aid a good portion of the population would starve and die.

I thought of the Shawshank Redemption, and the argument between Freeman and Robbins in the cafeteria about hope, and how dangerous and damaging that is (according to Freeman, and now this man also) in a place like prison.... very apropos writing.... I can understand that completely. You'd have to adjust, have to let certain things go, it would be far too painful to even think of loved ones or home (in a hostage situation in Somalia for crying out loud).... pretty brutal man....

It’s a principle of international law, dipshit. Every country is supposed to uphold it, not just Germany.

4:14 is Rogan talking about Somalia or the US CJ system?
I grew up near the village where the Somali pirates started. My people didn’t decide to become pirates for the fun of it. They’re fisherman who became pirates because they grew sick of westerns, Arabs, and Asians stealing fish and dumping toxic waste in the ocean which would kill off whatever fish they left behind. You have to understand during this time people were fishing to live another day. At first they would chase the ships until they left our shores but eventually warlord took things to another level.
Bishar Yusuf of course. I guess people were driven economically to make those choices like you said. Certainly greed played an important part too especially in the beginning when large transoceanic transport companies hadn’t begun to hire private marine security firms like the one I used to work for, they were paying off the warlords and not really reporting it. It’s like the Wild West out there
Bishar Yusuf That’s pretty interesting! It’s good to have both sides of a story. Thank you
I’m sure khat didn’t help. Ppl decide to do good or evil. Blaming others for criminal behavior is weak & dumb.
Sound Logic Dummy. If your only source of income is becoming a criminal, you are certain to die. If the country & govt fail, you can blame whoever you want, but first blame the ppl.
