  • That 200-600 is my new favourite lens. I've taken it out to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Frank Lake recently and I am just falling in love with it. It takes absolutely gorgeous bird shots, especially of birds in flight. It tricks me into thinking I'm a better wildlife photographer than I am lol

    • I think gone are the days when mirrorless cameras _needed_ to justify themselves with their compactness or light weight in order to have a selling point over SLRs (although that can still remain a selling point for some systems/combos). Modern EVFs are better than OVFs in almost all ways, and any ways in which they still lag behind are technological limitations that will improve with time, not fundamental limitations inherent to EVFs. The mirror assembly was just a carryover from film technology when we couldn't possibly have detailed exposure preview, and it also turned out to be useful with early digital sensors that couldn't continuously be kept on.

      @MusabJilani@MusabJilani4 жыл бұрын
    • @Phil Jones65 I don't think that has anything to do with mirrorless -- if anything, mirrrorless EVFs are much better than DSLR OVFs for manual focus, due to better focus preview options across the frame (focus peaking, punch-in zoom, etc.) and more global adaptability of legacy manual focus lenses due to the shorter flange distance. It just so happens most modern lenses (for mirrorless or DSLR) are focus by wire, even though that's not an inherent requirement of either system.

  • Thanks - especially to Jordan for his thoughts on focus-by-wire. I just had to check my Sigma 150-600 contemporary, and no, it’s not focus-by-wire. On the other hand my Canon STM lenses are f-b-w, unless I’m mistaken, and their AF beats everything else I’ve seen. So I don’t know, does f-b-w perhaps generally allow faster AF, or is it just some lenses?

    • It's super frustrating. As you mentioned, the non-extending barrel makes the 200-600mm potentially perfect for a matte box and follow focus, but the focus-by-wire undermines that option. Nice work on your episode as well!

    • @@thatjordandrake The press release said both of these lenses had linear focusing response, so is it all down to the lack of distance scale for focus pulling, or does even the linear focus by wire not feel right?

      @needles_balloon@needles_balloon4 жыл бұрын
    • @@needles_balloon The 200-600 isn't too bad (though no focus-by-wire system works properly with a follow focus), but the throw on the 600mm F4 was too long for me to use consistently, even with the linear response. I think Panasonic has the best solution on the S series, with customizable focus throw on FBW lenses and focus clutches on high end lenses.

    • Not true, for soccer the 600mm f/4 is THEE lens to have! I personally use my personal 500mm f/4E VR FL on one of my D5's for soccer and baseball, but for basketball or football I will borrow a 400mm f/2.8G VR! My second D5 usually has my 70-200mm f/2.8E VR FL and for soccer, I typically use a 1.4x TC for when the action gets closer. However the best lens is probably the Canon or Nikon 180/200-400mm with 1.4x TC. However on full frame 400mm is just not enough for soccer. To give you an example, on an NBA basketball court I can fit even the tallest of players in the frame with plenty of room on a 400mm f/2.8, so on the much much larger soccer field 600mm is often NOT enough!

  • Around 1:38 it sounds like you're saying the light isn't very bright in the stadium, so you're having to shoot at 4000 ISO. But your shutter speed is at 1/1000 at 347mm. Do you have to shoot soccer that fast? I would have thought you could shoot cut the shutter speed in half, to 1/500, which would allow you to cut the ISO in half, to 2000. Forgive me if I'm missing something. I'm only been doing this about a year now. You said "that's where Barney is probably doing better with that f/4 aperture." I get that the settings were probably for 600mm and then you had to zoom out to 347mm for this shot, but it still seems like the shutter speed and ISO could almost be cut in half to offer you the same light. Am I missing something?

  • 600mm lens + 2x teleconverter = 1200mm... Can you imagine if this could be adapted to an M4/3 body? That would be 2400mm... Add in high-res mode and you can start cropping like crazy. You could, theoretically, have a 5000mm equivalent focal length. Perfect for those moon shots where you want to see the Apollo landing sites.

    @SkylerKing@SkylerKing4 жыл бұрын
    • Practically every lens in existence could be adapted to fit M43 but I am happy with my own 100-400 although your idea sounds cool just heavy, expensive and not really in the M43 spirit lol

      @JoeMaranophotography@JoeMaranophotography4 жыл бұрын
    • Add a Viltrox EF-M2 to reduce a Canon EF 600+2xTC, gives you the same 1200mm/f8 and reduces it to 852mm (.71x) and regain a stop and some sharpness, for about 1700mm equivalent. High res mode would not work well with the moon because it moves too quickly at that focal length. You could still shoot multiple shots and then merge them later for enhanced resolution but you'll have to align the moon, (or mount it on a tracker).

      @tonywong9095@tonywong90954 жыл бұрын
    • I doubt you'd be able to use high-res mode at those focal lengths where small movements by the (moving) moon would be magnified over the course of multiple shots.

    • APS-C is probably better option because you are getting that 1.5x extra reach but you are not loosing as much in low light as you would on current MFT cameras. If there was MFT with something like GH5s starvis senor but really good tracking autofocus system than that would be great.

  • I am looking at this and then looking at all these broadcast lenses with 60X or even 100X magnification that can capture broadcast quality HD pictures... Given that most of us see photos in 2MP screens, isn't those lenses just better? I am sure used they go close to the A9 plus this lens combo or a Sony videocamera plus this lens.

      @SkylerKing@SkylerKing4 жыл бұрын
    • @@SkylerKing I just want a XH2 because the XH1 didn't hit the mark for me. If the IBIS was smoother and had better Autofocus for video I would not be waiting for another camera. I really just want a way bigger battery, smoother IBIS, full phase detection that covers whole sensor, and 4k 60 and they should make a XLR adapter connector accessory and I'll be happy.

    • @@joshdiditt I've got the X-H1. The firmware updates have helped a lot. I'm hopeful that future firmware updates will do even more (especially seeing what firmware updates have been able to do for my X-T1). But, I agree, the X-H1 would be just "that much better" if it had the autofocus and video capabilities of the X-T3. That would be the biggest bonus, for me (I haven't had any issues with battery life, but that might be because I always use the vertical grip).

      @SkylerKing@SkylerKing4 жыл бұрын
    • @@SkylerKing How do you like the IBIS for video? What other limitations have you experienced? I have the XT3 but looking for a second camera to compliment.

      @joshdiditt@joshdiditt4 жыл бұрын
    • @@joshdiditt with the firmware update, the IBIS works much better. I actually haven't had any issues with it, at all. I actually had the X-T30, as well, but sold it recently. Though the autofocus tracking in video is better in the X-T30 (and X-T3), the X-H1 is actually still very good. Since the X-H1 still has so much in common with the X-T3 and several huge advantages over the X-T2, I haven't really had any issues with it, personally. That updated firmware really helped a lot.
