Well, Vergil got overconfident and chose a harder dish... Despite Dante's shitty kitchen skills, fried rice is way easier than bury the light- creamy cake. If you're not that good at dessert, most cakes will taste like like a bland pile of dough... Experience told me that.

Dante is the kind of guy who says jackpot when getting off a highway exit.
The funny thing is that I can totally believe that Dante came with an interesting fried rice recipe using pepperoni. If instead of a traditional soy fried rice he instead did a fried rice with tomato sauce and mozzarella, he would have effectively made a pepperoni rice-a-roni. Which might not sound appetizing at first but if he made it pretty much from scratch it would legit be something pretty interesting, especially since he's also using sauteed onions and frying at least some of his ingredients in butter rather than oil. Simple to make, but the added changes give it flare. Meanwhile a Berried Delight is tasty, but for lack of a better term it's kind of boring. White cake with cream, strawberries, and graham cracker is not exactly the most exhilarating combo as far as confections go. Typically such a basic dish would be improved either by additional flares or the quality of their ingredients, namely supremely fresh ones. But what Vergil has made looks to be fairly straightforward and unembellished Berried Delight and if he's using regular store bought ingredients then the quality is broughtly at least a few days old which markedly degrades the overall freshness. In short, Dante's dish is simple and weird on the outside but actually has a depth and complexity to it that makes it fun, while Vergil's has pretentious goals but ultimately lacks the inherent quality needed to achieve actual perfection. Both rather fitting for their respective makers

Well, I can tell you why he's more like his uncle, Vergil. YOU WEREN'T THERE!! The first influence Nero got from the Sparda name - apart from the religion he was immersed in - was Dante! And the reason Nero was rebellious from the start was that he probably always felt something was off.
My head Canon now is that Dante is actually a really good cook...it's just that he just loves his local small business pizza joint so much he eats it everyday

Dante is not only financially supporting the business, he's also supporting their skill and making sure they'll get many repeat customers in the future. Dante is a based customer.

I actually made pepperoni fried rice before what a coincidence. I was just using leftovers in the fridge as one does with fried rice, and there were some peperoni sticks that had been in there for a while that no one seemed to want. So I diced them up and put them in the fried rice. It was actually really good.
For how calculated Vergil is in slaying his enemies (mainly attempting to murder dante), not suprised cooking would be a hobby.

The more i think about it kind of makes sense, Dante is essentially substituting lap cheong (chinese sausage) with pepperoni and another comment suggest that he might have used a tomato sauce based instead of soy sauce which effectively makes it a form of a omurice minus the omelette, so points for creativity and combining different flavour
