Cleaning and replacing faulty switch on Steelseries Apex M750 TKL keyboard. Disassembly, desoldering LED, desoldering the switch and then soldering in the new Gateron Red Linear one and the original LED back in, assembling everything back together.
Czyszczenie i wymiana switcha w klawiaturze Steelseries Apex M750 TKL.
Super sprawa, pewnie kilka godzin pracy. 😉👍
Powodzonka! :)
Thanks alot man. Subbed for the content. Can you tell me which keys are compatible other than Gateron Red Linear ( Hard to find ) Love from India.
any Gateron switch should work with it. They need to have 2 pins for connection to the circuit board and a slot or 4 holes for led connectors.
@@studiowasteland6239 Thank a lot again. I really appreciate it ❤️
One question, can you change the switches for those of another key that you don't use? the 1, A, Q and windows keys don't work because they accidentally spilled soda. In itself the damage is that sometimes it does not hold the keys and they begin to detect others and the Q no longer holds This happened two weeks ago and I gave the keyboard to a guy to clean it and see if it was solved but two days later the keys failed again and he no longer performs this type of repair I have the steelseries apex 7 tkl model
Hi, thanks for stopping by. Yes it is possible to just swap switches around with those working ones. After spilling soda, switches need to be taken apart and cleaned inside, I presume. Just swap them around and should be fine :)
@@studiowasteland6239 When disassembling the switches, do you have to remove the leds as well?
@@m1ztyk_173 In this particular keyobard, yes. Unfortunately the LED contacts go through the switch so if you don't de-solder the LED you won't be able to move the switch at all.
Hi, is it possible to use KTT KANG WHITES on this board or any other switch than gaterons?
Hi, yeah you should be ok with them. It doesn't have to be gateron ones.
Hi! Is cherry mx 3-pin switch compatible? Will the LED be an issue on the cherry mx switch if I use it instead of gateron?
no, 2 pin compatible. LED is soldered to pcb board separately from the switch. But they are mounted together. You can see it in my vid at 1:13 As long as there is a slit in the switch for the LED to go through it to the pcb board then you shoud be good. Plus, if you watched my video you would have noticed that switch has two pins, so, no further comment :)
So it's a 3-pin, 2 pins soldered & 1 plastic circular leg on center. Thanks for confirming it. Yeah, I saw it on your video. Just need to buy a sampler of a cherry mx first and compare the LED slot if same on the qx2. Else, i'll stick with gateron instead to not further complicate. Thanks for the reply bro. Keep safe!
@@harveyasis2520 no 3 pin is a 3 pin (pin is a long metal leg connecting a part to a pcb board in the keyboard). Round point in the center is not a pin as it is sitting place for a spring which is working inside the switch. So how can someone call "pin" a plastic seating of a spring which is buldging from the housing? Take care!
Mi te switche zaczęły padać masowo, mam jedną prawie cały rząd F nie działa + NumPad i cyfry. Jaki jest przewidywany koszt wymiany jednego switcha i ile czasu to zajmuje? I skąd dorwać nowy pasujący switch?
Is it an often problem for keyboard ss750 tkl?
i'm not sure but don't think so. Unless they are heavily used or couple years old.
So i can jusg solder on a new switch and still use the leds?
exactly, this is the way :)
Some of my apex 7 tkl keyboard keys need replacement, I searched and it says that they are qx2 switches, now I want to order new switches but I can't find qx2 anywhere, I found cherry mx brown (which says it's same) but I am wondering about if the housing will be the same and will fix in it or not, are all the switch types have same housing, from where I can buy qx2?
Hi, thanks for stopping by. Qx2 are made solely for Steelseries, they are made by Gateron. So pretty much any Gateron switches should fit. In the video I am soldering in Gateron Red Linear switches. Fit and work fine without any problem. If you have any more questions, hit me up! Good luck with the repair!
@@studiowasteland6239 Thanks, I have apex 7 tkl, so just curious if the base of the switch in gateron is same as qx2 or a bit different
@@hypnosaurus9102 No problem, you can buy them with either 3 plastic pins (2 side ones and 1 in middle) on bottom or 1 main in the middle. You can snip those 2 side pins if needs be. They are there just as a placement alignment function. I fitted them in that way before and it does not matter. The rest of connectors is standard (2 metal pins to solder to the board). Just make sure to buy the ones which will fit your LED diode. My Apex, from this video, has LED diodes which go all the way through the switch (as you can see in the video). Some switches have only small open slit on top of the switch, which means they won't fit in my keyboard as the LEDs will not go through them. Keep that in mind.
I have this keyboard too and the problem is some keys are sometimes unresponsive :(
Yeah, switches not working properly, just replace the switches for a few quid and it should be sound.
@@studiowasteland6239 can it really solve unresponsive key/switches?
@@filmedbyharyor yes. Switch becomes unresposive when the metal pins which flex and connect while switch being pressed become worn out and do not connect. Replace the switch with a new one and voila. Works. In case of Red Linear switches it looks like this: input.club/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/cherry-mx-red-500px-15-frames.gif
@@studiowasteland6239 i see. Oh and one more thing, the steelseries QX2 red switch are kinda rare in my country, got suggestions of what other switch are the same spec/similar? Because im only changing several of the switch not entirely. I've read the cherry MX red is the most similar tho
@@filmedbyharyor Yeah from what I gathered the QX2 are similar to Cherry MX Red too. Most important is the layout of the connectors underneath the switch. Needs to have those metal pins that connect to motherboard in the same place. If Cherry MX Red are similar to QX2, it means that Gateron Red Linear would fit too as they can be replaced with MX Cherry Red also.
Where did you buy those switch pullers?
They aren't swtich pullers. They are just some plastic trim prying tools I bought when I was doing some stuff to my phone. They come in handy with opening plastic cases or prying out switches in this case :)
What kind of switch do you use for replacement, thank you
Gateron Linear Red. You're welcome
@@studiowasteland6239 Cześć, podpowiesz jakie dokładnie to są switche? Z LED?
Powodzenia i pozdrawiam!
Hi, i am from indonesia does gateron ks-9, 3pin linear will fit to replace it ?
Hi, Yes they should fit and work just fine.
mas mau tanya , jadi nya pake switch apa ya?
can you share where you brought the switch from?
Yeah man, I got mine from www.opticboards.com but there are many alternatives by now. Good luck!
What material can replace the copper mesh?
De-insulated copper wire should do the trick. Copper mesh is there to absorb any leftover solder from the contact points. Copper heats up easily and absorbs the solder with no hesitation. So just a copper wire with multiple strands of copper should do the trick also.
Hello, i just bought this Keyboard and sadly the LED is broken, the switch itself tho is fully working. could someone maybe send a link to LEDs compatible?
Hi, If you type in "keyboard led diode" there should be some results popping up. Just make sure it has 4 "legs" and if they do give dimensions of it, check them too. Un-solder the broken one and make sure the diameters fit as well. Good luck!
hi i have a apex 7 keyboard and i got new switches do you know how to replace the switches on a apex 7 keyboard?
Sorry my friend, I haven't had the occasion to repair Apex 7 yet. I would imagine the basics of the keyboard are pretty much the same as here though :)
@@studiowasteland6239 its ok if its the same as this keyboard then thats great
@@josephmurrell7834 the basics of mounting the switch to the motherboard should be the same. Good luck with the repair!
@@studiowasteland6239 ok thx!
Pierwszy lepszy serwis elektroniki w warszawie to zrobi bez problemu.
siema czy da sie wymienić switche w apex 7
Siema.
I cant seem to remove the solder on the switch on my M750 :/
Hi, thanks for stopping by, try this tip: if the old solder on the broken switch does not want to heat up, add some new solder to it first then try to heat them up and take the mix of old and new one off the switch. They are factory solder which is nearly led free and because of that it does not want to heat up easily. Mixing new hot solder with the old one has helped me. Good luck.
@@studiowasteland6239 I'm stuck on the led part. I can't pull it out
@@MG-ic8gk I think that means you didnt remove all the solder from it. Sometimes the solder can be stuck between the solder port and one of the led connectors/legs. In a minimum amount, very little quantity is needed to keep it in place quite firmly. Try to wiggle LED a bit while heating up the port and LED leg. Use soldering flux to help yourself.
@@studiowasteland6239 Alright noted! Will try again!
Can You repair and replace such switches for a fee? I have Apex M750 keyboard and QX2 switches
The nearest proper repair shop or some pc repair shop should do it for you for a reasonable price.
Najważniejsze to w miarę dobry sprzęt, odpowiednia temperatura, flux, dobra cyna, odsysarka, taśma miedziana do zdejmowania cyny i jazda.
Yo i own this keyboard and ive had a issue recently (i dropped milk on my keyboard 💀) but at 1:20 what are those red and blue things called so i can pluck out my key things Sorry for my bad terminology im bad with keyboards lol
This is just a pair of plastic spatula for electronics. You can get them probably in any electronics shop or a shop with tools. Remember you have to DE-SOLDER the switch first before "plucking out" your switch.
@@studiowasteland6239 Thank you I'll try and get some of these and I'll try and find a tutorial on how to unsolder it
@@xZiriko No worries, I didn't do de-soldering tutorial as the video would be even longer :) You can see how the de-soldering went at 00:56. Good Luck!
Is this the same as apex pro?
I dont think it is.
@@studiowasteland6239 had 5 of my switches unresponsive sometimes, idk what to do since the apex pro didnt told me that it was hotswappable switches
@@rivalry5023 If they are indeed not hot-swappable then you need to de-solder them first. I dont know if LED is still built, going through the switch or not. Sorry, I won't be much help in this case :(
@@rivalry5023 I just read some review article about Apex Pro. It seems it is build very much alike my M750. I can see the LED is still going though the switch. So you would need to de-solder switches and LEDs (so the concept of work is pretty much same as in my video).
how you fuckng open that frame i take off the screws but i cant open that shit
Pry it up with something thin, right by the cable.
@@n0_skills one of my led’s not correct like when i switched to red ‘H’ key led shows green if i switch that rgb eith another one is this can be solved ?
@@ayberkyegen If it is constantly light up green then it is possibly broken. RGB LED is built from 3 separate led (red green and blue) they mix and match intensity of the light to match the color chosen by the user. If one of them breaks they are unable to mix light colors to make the one chosen by the user. If on your H only green color is lit (no matter what you choose) then 2 of 3 led inside of that one "bulb" are broken. You need to replace the complete LED which is dedicated to that key. You can see it in my video. It is separate from the switch so no need to take out the switch to replace the LED. The LED will have 4 thin connectors/legs soldered to the mainboard. De-solder old one and solder in the new one, job done. While taking apart the keyboard don't forget to check that you removed all the screws (some are hidden almost under the switches or between them). There are also some on the back. Holla at me here If you have any problems bro. Good luck!
@@studiowasteland6239 No, it is not always green. For example, I make it red, then I make it blue, then it turns green. It just doesn't light up when it's blue and there are only 2 screws on the back cover right? I only found two screws
@@ayberkyegen yes, I think there are two screws on the back and loads on the front. Yeah your whole LED for that switch needs to be replaced. You can see the LED in my video at 1:15

You might be laughing now, at one switch failing. But those keyboards have one thing in common...once any switch starts failing, more will follow soon. Brace yourself, more failing switches are coming :D

Why do KZheadrs feel the need to obfuscate educational videos with music and speed? Sure, I can deduce what you are doing without an auditory explanation, but I have to slow down the video manually, turn off the sound, deal with the resultant crappy frame adjustment, all because you took a perfectly good process and tried to stylize it for some misguided attempt at coolness (or is it "sick"ness nowadays?). I swear all of you Gen Z's were dropped on your heads.
The thing is, I'm a boomer, sorry to disappoint.
