  • Dr Holger Zellentin looks at the variety of ways that the Qur'an is studied by outlining three major approaches; (1) the traditionalist which sees every verse having a precise location in the Prophet's life; (2) the Revisionist which finds little connection with precise historical moments; and (3) the Neo-traditionalist approach which sees the value in aspects of the other two approaches. He also outlines three major scholarly projects that are being carried out at the moment into the Qur'an's origins.

But to other non-believing scholars it is merely an ancient artifact and might even be a source of misguidance since they read without an intention of finding guidance, but criticism and rebutal (their apporach is that of a nigilist who just refuses to acknowledge good and bad, and who rejects moral authority. Instead holding the firm belief that Truth and all that comes with it --e.g morality, justice, ethics, spirituality, order-- are non-existant. Nihilism is heabily present in the Western thought.)

  • It's such a pathetic method of those who call themselves "critics". Thousands of scholars and millions of writings showed that you cannot take the Quran out of context (although they were at the peak of Arabic mastery). Then some non-Arab claims he can critique the Quran with a non-native tongue, and probably a translation with human shortcomings. Calling it "school of thoughts" is honestly, an unjust and unfair matter. It's not a different flavors, or artistic work to treat it like that. There is a right methodology, and the others are just plain wrong and mere games or even a waste of time. The methodology has been shown in the Quran, by the prophet peace be upon him, and his companions. There is the biggest context, specific contexts as well as clear verses with uncontroversial meaning. However, there are also many, let's say vague or doubtable versus. The Quran, the prophet peace be upon him and his companions showed us that the method - and only method - is to return those vague verses to match the clear ones. However, these vague verses are never in the core beliefs. They are more about specific and branching details. No vague versus about core beliefs. For reference, Surah 3, verse 7. However, it's just another one of the endless miracles of the Quran, which the presenter (Tom in the video) says, the Quran keeps delivering and pouring knowledge like its day 1. While others corrupt scriptures have weathered like a dead tree. Every time you open the Quran, it feels fresh with wider and bigger contemplation every time you get an additional idea, it doubles and widens rather than narrows. May Allah guide and protect us.

    • He was a pious man and an older brother of Mary/Mariam/مريم. He is not the same as the brother of Musa/Moses/موسى. If you read a little bit in prior verses in the same surah, Allah mentions Yahya/John/يحيى and states about him, ٱسۡمُهُ یَحۡیَىٰ لَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ مِن قَبۡلُ سَمِیࣰّا his name is Yahya (John); we have not made anyone bear the same name before him. This indicates (albeit, subtly) that, in the case of Aaron/Haroon/هارون, there was a Haroon before him, who is the brother of Musa/موسى/Moses.

    • @@andypendant4901 - Mary v Miriam in the Qur'an....... Qur’an 3:35 onwards... (paraphrased) A pregnant woman from the family of Imran dedicates her unborn to God's service in the Temple thinking it would be a boy. But a girl was born instead & was named Mary. She was looked after by Zakariyya in the Temple at Jerusalem & it was here that Archangel Gabriel announced to her that she will give birth to Jesus (as). IMPORTANT NOTE : make note of the fact that whenever the Qur’an mentions Maryam (Mary the mother of Jesus /Isa) peace be upon them: - She is in the Temple at Jerusalem. - Her mother is not alive. - She has no brothers named Moses or Aaron. - Her son is clearly named 'Jesus SON OF MARY' who came to correct the teachings of Moses (pbut) who came many centuries earlier. - and Mary is mentioned by name so many times & is referred to as 'Chosen over all other women'. It is necessary to know all this so that one doesn't get confused when Mary is called "Oh sister of Aaron.. " by her ppl to remind her of her Priestly status in the Temple. She was, in effect, a Priestess living in the Temple. The descendants of Aaron are the only ones that can become Priests or the High Priest. Jews & Christians (Luke 1:5) refer to Elizabeth (the mother of John the Baptist /Yahya) as a "Daughter of Aaron". Mary was her Cousin & supposedly, descended from Judah - hence why she is referred to "Sister of Aaron". Disbelievers say the Qur’an is wrong & got Mary mixed up with Miriam who was the sister of Moses & Aaron (pbut). Note that the Qur’an never names this Miriam but only mentions her story briefly: - She is in Egypt - She follows her baby brother, Moses, in his basket on the Nile River. - She informs Pharaoh's wife about somebody that can suckle the crying baby. - Miriam's MOTHER is called on by Pharaoh's wife to suckle baby Moses. So all this proves that the 2 characters (Mary & Miriam) are different in the Qur’an with totally different stories. Further proofs: Qur'an 2: 246-251 says that after the deaths of Moses & Aaron, the Children of Israel are told by their Prophet (Saul) that God has chosen Talut as their King & he will lead them into battle against Goliath so that they can then have their own land in Palestine. The young Prophet David (Dawood AS) killed Goliath. The Qur’an tells us how David's son, prophet Soloman peace be upon them both, built the Temple in Jerusalem in which, many centuries later, Mary the mother of Jesus lived. The Qur'anic narrative is consistently correct. For more details : www.islamic-awareness.org/quran/contrad/external/mary

  • What astonishes me is the ability of some (non-Muslim) western scholars to talk about the Qura'an in isolation of the Qura'an. What I mean is that, in many arguments I have seen from such scholars, they discuss and analyze the meaning and history of one verse of the Qura'an in way that is inconsistent with the other verses of the Qura'an. Sometimes (actually, and for a good reason, most of the time) the same notion that is presented in one ayah/Qura'anic verse is presented again in another ayah but with a different wording. So, comprehending the meaning God intended for us to understand is made easier by reciting the entire Qura'an all-together and analyzing the conforming verses as a set. I might be a little harsh towards western scholars in this aspect; it is true that even some Arab, Muslim scholars have been guilty of the same error.

Nihilism is heabily present in the Western thought.) Truth can come from 2 main sources in our life: -Nature ( the natural law, knowledge of natural sciences) -Tradition ( including religion and wisdom) ANYTHING that doesn't come from ether of these two sources is illogical. For onstance, positivism and positive secular laws belong to neither of those, which is why they are illogical and can easily lead to nihilism.

After this the path of Islam becomes harder and harder to follow, as humanity added their own bias to Allah's messages. Humanity have many traits. Extremism taking simple advice as structural laws that are enforced by acts of threats of death. Those who allow their mind to detach from the physical grounding of life and follow myths that lack any practical function for day to day life. But those who follow the middle way, not extreme and still grounded to this life, appreciating all that Allah has given us to preform our lives the correct way, to respond to Our Creator's call to us using the abilities He granted to us. Not taking this life for granted. By re-cognising how incredible it is to be alive and value all life at its correct level. The Halel way life was meant to be lived. Not it's opposite.
