Schalk Burger - The Incredible Schalk

Schalk Burger was voted World Rugby Player of the Year in 2004 after his breakout season. We was a fantastic player who could slow down opposition ball at the breakdown, had deceptive speed and above all, he had good hands for a forward.
Schalk cam back from serious injury twice in his career. The first time was in 2007 after her recovered from a serious neck injury in 2006 and then he made a second come back in 2014.
This is testimony to his strength of character and his resolve to never be beaten. He is truly a Springbok great.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

  • When he started playing for the springboks he was like a loose cannon, but the years went by and he matured, even became captain.

  • Why show tries? His biggest contribution to the game was off the ball and away from the try line. A legend even after his comeback.

    • Exactly - i didn't come here to see him score the tries that most professional players could - although i doubt many could make the try he did against NZ at around the 11:30 mark. I came to see him twist and thump bodies around at the breakdown - that's where he won matches

  • Burger had all the attributes necessary to be one of the all time greats and admired by rugby fans across the globe; instead, his own indiscipline and questionable antics separate him from that pantheon. He brought a different dimension of aggression to the game but was seemingly unable to control his darker side that had to go beyond all recognised boundaries of fair play. Ultimately, instead of being able to applaud all he brought to the game, most independent fans I know are disappointed by his lack of character.

    • Fair comment, but I think we know very different people. Rugby fans I know adore him and mostly think he is one of the great Springboks. Interesting how opinions differ

    • @@RealRugby - thank you for your courteous reply - too often when people disagree with you online the vitriol pours out. I’m assuming that you’re from the southern hemisphere and most likely a “Saffa”; I’m European and I think this is likely the reason we disagree. I can understand why South Africans would rally around a totemic figure like Burger but for the majority of rugby fans I have spoken to both at home and on my travels, Burger became the man we all loved to hate because of the negative side of his game and character. I should maybe revise that to “on-field character”, because I’ve never met the guy, and am therefore not in any position to judge him, but I get the impression that he enjoyed being the pantomime villain. I’m in my sixth decade and have watched rugby now for 40-odd years. I’ve seen some truly hard characters gracing the game in my time but they didn’t seem to need to play the way Burger did on too many occasions. Regards 🙏
