The wedding “pie” is a Taiwanese wedding tradition that is given to the bride’s family and friends by the groom as a gift. They are distributed by the bride (and her parents and siblings) before the wedding date. The reason for this gift is because traditionally the bride’s side of guests don’t go to the wedding banquet as the bride is viewed to be married into the groom’s family. There is a separate banquet for the bride’s family and friends at a later date as a gesture of appreciation from the groom’s family. The tradition of holding separate wedding banquets is often simplified in the modern society in which the bride’s family and friends are invited to the main wedding banquet. However some couples still follow the traditional wedding practice. These wedding pies come in both savory and sweet fillings, and the outer shell is flaky and sweet. A more popular choice amongst young people these days is the western style cookies.
Thank you. You totally answered my question. 😀
Cool information! Thanks for educating me!
Interesting 🤔
Thanks for the explanation! I love learning about other cultures and especially their food traditions.
Nice comment girl
That is one savory cake... I was shocked at first but then realized the english word "pie" is more accurate.
I’m sure that we would be grateful if the ingredients were named to help keep us in the loop. Thank you 🙏 for this interesting video.Blessings from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🙏
So beautiful! Looks so delicious and the skill it takes to make this cake is astounding!!! Bravo to the bakers!!!!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I appreciate the hand washing and sanitation/cleanliness. And I MORESO appreciate how freaking yummy this looks
I just love watching how fast you prepare food. And I love trying food from different cultures too. There’s not much I don’t like. I think we can all learn from each other. Your culinary skills are amazing.

reminds me of the shortbread I made today, the butter and flour and sugar resisting each other as I squeezed the butter into the flour, at first large knots of butter and flying flour but then after a few passes a perfect dough ready to firm and cut into shortbreads for the oven.
Una verdadero arte para preparar este delicioso pastel, felicidades desde Mexico 👏👏💖

I wish they gave a list of ingredients. It looks so interesting.

I wish too know what are the ingredients please, what is this meat? Thanks
@@XYANF Looks like pork belly fat to me. These are strange things to see in a "cake", for a westerner like me. shallots and pork fat?
@@starkraven7308 I’ll say this is more like a pie, but in Taiwan we do have savoury moon cake as well
@@starkraven7308 Definitely shallots, fried til crispy then added to ground pork belly fat with corn starch and flour for the filling. Crust looks to be some of the original cooking oil reserved and chilled until solid then mixed with AP flour. I'm impressed by that rolling/layering technique from 12:25 on, definately have to try it myself next time I make biscuits!
Never seen a wedding cake like this! I like that hand washing scenes are included in this demonstration 👌🏽
Such a shame it doesn't list the ingredients but loved watching it ❤
It would be great to at least have subtitles, or a description. I was unsure about the ingredients, until I realized it is a savory pie. Interesting. Such meticulous treatment of ingredients. So much respect for these cooks.
Would have wish to have a narrative with the film..in awe how many ingredients how many procedures by hand so educational beats the pandemic m
It's not really savory, the taste is very sweet. Rough Ingredients: Sesame seeds (wet, only being used for the dough base before got into oven), pork fat (sliced and stir fried), shallots (deep fried 2 times so it stays crispy), fine sugar during minute 6:00 (a heck bunch of em, which makes this cake utterly sweet), flour, butter, 3 tablespoon of salt, liquid pork oil (from the fried pork fat earlier, it produces the oil), water.
@@mainaccount9696 when the sugar is put in, what is the pink (meat?) I took it to be more pork fat at first, just not cooked down. I could feel my arteries becoming solid as I watched....
@@MelissaThompson432 Yes that one also pork fat (I just learned that the correct english is supposed to be lard lol). If you see min 4:32 they cut it to be bigger slices literally only to fry it to use the oil (honestly idk why it has to be THAT many while the pork oil only being used a little). Then the ones they didn't show is another batch of pork lard chopped smaller to be mixed into the dough. True, this cake no matter what version, is heavy in calories. If it's being shaped into tiny pies maybe a person can eat one. But the one I grew up with, always have it in medium-big size (like maybe diameter of 10 cm each) and my mom usually cut them up to 6-8 small pieces. I felt full with just 1 slice lmao
@@MelissaThompson432 Ah I have to revised a bit of what I said, the ones I was talking about is not this wedding cake, but a moon pie. Moon pies also have different kind of fillings, but this sweet pork lard ones is also popular. And Moon pie is taller (thicker?) than this one, so in the moon pie it's definitely much more... well nauseating (to me).
A cake with the most unexpected ingredients. Like the wedding itself, it’s a treasure trove of surprises.
Thanks 😊
Fully came into here expecting a moist thick delicious vanilla strawberry huge cake but boy was I in for a surprise
I'm so confused at first like where wedding cake?! Or is it a wrong video title.

Taiwan has the most beautiful packaging for their food ❤
👍Thanks 😊
True. The cost and effort they put into it is wonderful 😍
I have googled the shop and it is in central Taiwan. To my surprise, the price of the traditional cake was extremely cheap but it requires so much hand-made process. When I saw the preparation of red-onions, with the price, I would say people in Taiwan are really lucky to have such wonderful bakery. I really hate to prepare red-onions, as it is really time-consuming. But it plays such important parts in our traditional food.
I think those aren't red onions. Aren't they shallots?
Can I go online and order those cakes???

I watched it all and wish I knew more. So much work goes into each cake. I'd like to have Alton Brown (or someone really) narrating and telling me why the steps are necessary and what benefit it creates. There is a beauty to the way these are made and I'm guessing a beautiful tradition behind the cakes.
It’s small chunks of pig fat and chilies - but it’s a cake???
@@chaozhouhoa360 a cake is just a compact disc. A savory cake. Although in American English cake is usually used for sweet cakes. Perhaps we can call this a pastry!

It's always so beautiful to learn traditions of every culture!!! They say you learn something new everyday!
it is also moon cake in my hometown
Yes, so true.
It looks like a big hopia in the Philippines but in a different way.onion leaves are used for hopia while they use red onion for their cake
Victims of slavery and oppression are discovering new freedom they didn't have before. USA created wedding traditions, manufacturing brands, food recipes, Hollywood movies, Broadway shows when the pilgrims left England. Americans fought for freedom continuously from the British still chasing defectors. Foreign governments are Interfering in our elections, economy, media. Only the Monarchies were able to have weddings before.
OMG from the mixing to the rolling to the bouncing everything is a master class! Amazing!
👋👋💪
While modern couples would go for the western style wedding cake, this traditional wedding cake is still absolutely relevant today and has a unique flair and flavor. Hope this traditional festive food continues to be treasured for the centuries to come.
As a Westerner, I can appreciate this tradition. Our traditions, at least to me, seem so boring and humdrum.
Not just modern couple, vegan and vegetarian couple in Taiwan do not eat this pie because it has meat in it. There is a vegan version of it which is actually older traditionally because early Taiwanese were vegan due to religious belief.
I’d much rather have a sweet cake on my wedding day than onion pie. This is clearly a dish made by someone very pissed off about who was getting married and this was their middle finger.
@@InsaneLaughter01 This is really funny ! I would say that before or during a date the last thing you want to eat is something with onion in it for obvious reasons (it gives you bad breath and makes you fart), so yes on my wedding day (and especially night) the last thing i want to be is malodorous at both ends ! "You may kiss the bride - I'd rather not !"
@@InsaneLaughter01 It's a thousand year old tradition from the east. "Someone very pissed off" would be those people who think culture is the same all over the world and savory cakes have no place on weddings because they grew up in a different region with a different tradition.
So pleasing to watch it👍

I need to taste this in my life.. that looks sooo tasty. I also appreciate being able to see the process that goes into making one of these delightful foods.
The taste is sweet with a mix of savory of the pork & shallots. If you watch minute 6:00, it's a fine sugar and not flour lol. I personally hate this kind of taste, it's weirdly sweet and not sweet like usual sweet cake, it's also unlike a bacon with maple syrup. It's another kind of weird sweet idk
They need to stop lying. Remove their oppressive regimes before they can say they are free to create traditions. This is not wedding cake.

Wow! I've seen these many times but had no idea how complicated the making of them was. This is a brilliant video; very well made. Love the video and am amazed at the cake.
Wow, that is totally awesome! Somehow I imagined that wedding cakes meant to be sweet, but this is different in every way possible. I wish there was translation of the ingredients. Not that I could do it but it would be nice to know what went into the cake... 😁 Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm not sure of everything, but I recognized sesame seeds, shallots (the crispy-fried red oblong onions in the beginning) and pork belly (it looked like they fried the slices up into pork rinds!) fried in canola oil. No idea what the yellow stuff that got kneaded into the flour was. If my guess is anything near accurate, some kind of lard or butter. These are designed to be rich and savoury, not sweet~
@@alexisgrunden1556 Probably margarine
@@alexisgrunden1556 Thank you. I thought the onion was garlic and the meat was either fish or chicken. I kept waiting for cake ingredients familiar in the states! 🤦♀️😆
@@astzfat3319 I think in the states we would call it a pie, like a savory hand pie.
@@alexisgrunden1556 They rendered out the lard from the pork belly. If you let the lard cool down, it solidify. Lard is the traditional shortening used in European pastry making. Lard might be the "yellow stuff" added to the dough in the video at 7:20 (it looks more yellow-pinkish on my screen).

Hii bhai
Savory? That is a heart attack on a plate, is what it is. Pure saturated fat, of the worst kind. I wouldn't touch any of that.
I would love to try it. I'm sure they would be served in very small pieces as it would be so rich.
@@Gardis72 I believe they mean savory as in salty or spicy, rather than sweet. This fits the bill of that definition, regardless of the fat content.
