USA as a country has the history of interfering with similar protests happening all over the world. US used to make uninformed and biased comments about similar events, especially in India. What right US has to make moments about events happening outside US, when US itself suppress the voice of democracy ?
You can hold lawful protests in the US all you want, but you cannot threaten other people nor encroach on another person’s rights, which is what the protestors are doing. Oh, and to be a totally lawful protester you need to apply for a permit and remain peaceful, which they did not, so not rights were trampled on other than those people who had been threatened with violence.

So far as the protest at Columbia is concerned the student protesters have the right to free speech. Even if it’s labeled “hate speech” it’s still protected speech. However, they don’t have the right to destroy private property, trespassing, disturbing the peace, criminal mischief, vandalism and resisting arrest. If they were arrested for illegally entering a private building and destroying it, then that’s on them. They went from peaceful protest, which is protected, to violently taking control of a private building, which is not a protected activity. You can’t break the law and then whine about the consequences. Civility demands accountability. Peacefully protest all you want, just keep it civil, keep it legal.
Why negotiate, just arrest them, a few days in jail might be what they need.
It's nice to see that the concept of "free speech" is catching on among the student and faculty populations at Colombia; the other universities as well. Maybe voices that are outside of the group think narrative won't be shouted down or silenced in the future.
