Woodturning - The Lightning Walnut Vase
Woodturning - In this video, I make this incredible vase from a piece of walnut that got hit by lightning. It was a bumpy ride to get this piece finished, but in the end it's one of the best pieces I've made. Thanks for watching and please like and share.

EVERYONE makes mistakes. You just move on and deal with it. .happy turning.
Thank you very much!
As a turner I can't tell you how much I appreciate you keeping all the pitfalls and fixes in your videos. Your experience is priceless. Thanks again Jim.
Thanks for watching
I like whacking your video thank you very much.
@@williamblackgoat5675 WATCHING? if not what is whacking?
Agree. Thanks for keeping the faux pas in the video.
I agree David
I appreciate your humility. It keeps your videos real.
Thanks for watching
I'd love to see the "dog" or "bear" smoothed, polished and shined. I know you can't really turn it. But, it looks like it's almost already shaped. I see the eye and everything. Of course, I'd love to see some of those really gnarly pieces turned into vases, or bowls, or urns. You do those things, really beautifully.
Yes, some will need to left intact. Others will look great with resin. Thanks
You never disappoint. You take a split chunk of log that most people would look at and call firewood and turn it into a stunning masterpiece. Well done.
Thank you very much
I so appreciate your taking time to talk and show us through all the processes, mistakes and all. And what a stunning piece. I don't turn, or make anything, but I do enjoy watching your videos, your humour and the journey you take to make the beautiful turnings you create.
Thank you very much!
That Trailer Scene was hilarious. Great project too
Lol. Thanks for watching
My Husband and I just love watching the love you put into your projects...
Thank you very much
"I'll just watch the first few minutes, I gotta sleep".. Aaaaaaaaaand I watched the whole thing. Damn that's a pretty sick vase. Thank you for introducing me to woodturning, now that's something I definitely wanna learn and do. Thanks Jim for sharing all your experience and knowledge! It's priceless
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
Sometimes we just want to throw in the towel but the artist in us sees beyond the struggles. Another beautiful piece, glad you stuck with it.
Thank you very much
@@SpragueWoodturning +1 to OP. You are tenacious! - and WOW does it pay off!
Very much gorgeous, and I totally agree with Dave there; not editing out when the project bucks or fights, is true quality.
Thank you very much!
Knotty! Knotty! 🤣🤣🤣 The round burl could make a really nice cauldron. This piece is gorgeous! The resin colours came together in such a stunning way. Another amazing piece!
Thank you very much!
Yes I've experienced some pitfalls with epoxy too. Nothings ever easy or goes to plan liked we hoped, but we improvise through it just like you did. Came out great! Love your old school lathe.
Thank you very much!
One of the things I appreciate most about your videos is that you recognize that learning what NOT to do is just as important as learning what to do in the first place. Please, keep helping us learn by teaching us where you fail. This is a spectacular piece!
Sure will. Thanks
Couldn't say it better, well said.
Well said, I couldn't say it better.
That giggle at 24.20 is pretty wholesome 😂
Yup, lol. Thanks
STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! YOU ARE AN EXCEPTIONAL ARTIST! WE ALSO LOVE YOUR "SLOW-MO"! IGNORE THE HATER/S!
Thank you so much!
I love how dark this wood is! It looks absolutely stunning with the dancing blue and purple. The cheeky sense of humor was awesome, it was entertaining to hear you contain yourself!
Lol, thanks!
Absolutely beautiful as always Jim. Thanks for all the great videos.
Thanks for watching
That gold really pops - I really enjoy watching your creativity
Thank you very much
Walnut is still king. The gold highlights turned out awesome.
Thank you very much
It's not our mistakes that define us, it's how we overcome them and improve, another lovely item, your content is addictive lol.
Thank you very much!
I definitely appreciate you including your mistakes, Jim. I not only learn from them but am encouraged to know I'm not the only one who makes them!
Thanks for watching!
THAT PIECE IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK IS SOOO A FEMALE LION!!!! 🦁🦁
Can’t argue that! Thanks
Learn something new EVERY time a watch one of your videos!! Designer Epoxy
Awesome, thank you!
Absolutely beautiful!! The gold filled cracks look great!! Always learn lots from your videos, best way to start my Saturdays!
What about Friday’s, haha. Thanks
Sure is a beautiful piece! Love the gold accent too! Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks for watching
Jim just keeps on truckin' no matter what. Your stick-to-it-ness is showing. Great job! Your clean room table needed some "sealer" on it anyway.
Lol, you’re right there. I’ll get the belt sander out and take care of it. Thanks for watching
Now that's a purple I can love! Gorgeous, beautiful job, again. Artificial flowers would be perfect.
Thank you very much!
Yes my mind went there
Lol, thanks 😊
I think the only thing you can do with the one piece is to make what it wants to be you wouldn’t have to show what you make of it kind of a private piece no pun intended 😂
It's really good to see just how much the colour and chatoyance are brought out in the wood, the resin looked really good and it was hard to see where the blue stopped and the purple started. The gold crack resin looked really good, might of needed a small pich or extremely small cutter or carbide burr in the engraver to give the crack a bit more depth in the centre. I think outlining the resin would look good too, sometimes it's hard to improve on nature though lol. Really good finish, think you should get powdered metal i.e. aluminium, bronze, copper etc to get a nice metal inlay look about it?
Your videos are really interesting and informative. Love the explanation of every step involved in the process. That’s an absolutely beautiful vase. These techniques should be classified as a fine art medium.
Wow, thank you very much!
Love thes videos. Just to see the skills used to create the transaction from one beautiful object to another in the creator's hand. Awesome. Love the object lessons.
Nothing against chaos: the genius reigns over the chaos😁
Thank you very much
Beautiful piece. Thank you for including the failures as well as successes. It makes the end result all that much more enjoyable
Thanks for watching
You won the fight with the log. It's an awesome vase, yes the gold is a nice touch, looks awesome. 😎👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much
Love this vase. Walnut is the best and goes well with the resin. Beautiful!!!
Thank you very much!
Now thats (Class!!) Thank you for leaving that teaching moment in the video and not hiding it from us. Not one of us are perfect and even after years of wood working I still make the simplest of mistakes. 😊
I appreciate that!
You have the patience of a Saint...I would have rolled that stump into the lake and never looked back😂
Lol! Thank you very much!
Wow, I just have to agree with you on using the gold in the smaller veins!! Fantastic, happy ending experiment there. I think it touches off on that most beautiful blue you've used here, and as blues go with yellows so well in the first place.... well you certainly have put the explanation point on this note!!! Perfectly executed journey from start to finish! Thank you kindly 😁👍.
Thank you very much!
The translucence of the resin when looking from the inside of the vase out is really nice. Also, I think the spruce burl has the makings of a very fine cauldron.
I’m hoping is not a sticky mess, lol. Thanks 😊
I too love this project but what is more important to me is the education I receive from your videos. Great job! Bowl Giveaway
Thank you very much
I'm impressed with how you work through the problem and are honest on how to fix the problem/mistake. My wife loves your work. She is addicted to your talent! Do I need to worry? 😂
Possibility 😜😜. Thanks
Jim, this is beautiful! Love the Japanese gold technique!! Great explanation / tutorial on your methodology. Always great to see the challenges, it allows me to relate :)
Thank you very much
Wow super beautiful piece. Feeling sorry for the mishaps with the leaks but at the same time also very muhc approving of you levaing those in. That's the things that really make you legit and authentic in showing your actual process and giving people a real chance to understand how things are going (or not going). great choice going with the gloss this time too. Love how shiny it is
Thank you very much
Great way to transform a damaged piece into a lovely vase. Thanks for showing and explaining what and what not to do.
Thanks for watching!
Jim you are a good teacher and a fine craftsman.
Thank you very much
I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I had to comment while catching up on all your amazing content/creations. I am SO happy to see you tried the faux-kintsugi technique. I absolutely love it as a style and was one of the (many) folk who suggested it a while back, so it really made my day to see that you'd tried it here. It looks STUNNING! You really nailed it. I think it was kinda poetic that the project fought you so hard and you used the kintsugi technique on it, along that whole making something beautiful out of a broken thing philosophy. I've also got to say; the fact you stayed so calm and chill when the resin kept leaking, and to come into your workshop and see that river of purple... I might have lost my mind, but you calmly sorted it and in the end have created something truly beautiful and yeah, you're an inspiration Jim, really glad to have found your channel :) I also really loved the trailer section where you talk about your new pieces from Troy, your cheeky giggles at /that one piece/ made me laugh alongside you! :D Between the difficult project and seeing you overcome the challenges, to the playful levity with the wood from Troy, yeah, this is one of my favourite videos from you. Really great stuff :D
Thank you so much! Ive debated using this process on other projects, but this one just seem to be screaming for it. Thanks for watching!
1st time seeing your work and I must say that it is beautiful! I subscribed and am looking forward to many more of your creations! Ps: the one piece that you found and made you giggle made me bust out laughing 🤣 can't wait to see what comes of it!
Thanks for subbing! That piece is going to be a challenge, lol.
And also, I've been watching your channel all day. Thanks for teaching me so much !!!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
Man you are great at what you do don't ever quit because that vase was amazing
Too much time and money in it to quite, lol. Thank you very much!
I have just recently subscribed to your channel and have watched a lot of your videos and this one right here is my favorite so far with all the curve balls it threw at you and not just at the start all the way till the end and your never give up attitude turned out a very very interesting and incredibly beautiful piece of artwork!! I have never came close to turning anything but I stumbled across your channel and I am very glad that I decided to watch that first one!! Thank you so much for making us a part of your world!! Your an amazing wood turner!! Again thank you keep the amazing videos coming!!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching!
thank you for your vulnerability and openness and honesty! much appreciated
You are so welcome, thanks!
You are a perfectionist Jim. Designer Epoxy
Thanks!
The integrity that you demonstrate in the process of making these videos is amazing. So many people have lost sight of the importance of living with integrity.
A very true statement! Thanks!
Of all the KZhead videos on Woodturning yours is the best! That was a gorgeous vase you sure can take a piece of gnarly old wood and make it into a piece of art!
Thank you very much!
Jim, that is the most beautiful, big vase! You just can't beat walnut and Waterlox. DESIGNER EPOXY
Thank you very much
I got the flu yesterday, and was looking for something relaxing while I fight off this fever. I know nothing about wood turning but found this both interesting and calming.
Sorry to hear that! Thanks for watching
OMG this vase is AMAZING! Beautiful job!!❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
That’s what we call extraordinary.
Thank you very much
Brilliant use of old epoxy!
Thank you very much
Wow !! What a battle that piece was !! But it turned out so gorgeous !! Bravo !!
Thanks 😊
She’s a beauty! Good work Jim.
Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to share your talent
Thanks for watching!
Another beautiful piece. The gold really sets it off.
Agreed, thanks!
Glad to see I'm not the only one projects seem to pick on when trying to finish them! Designer Epoxy
No your not! Thanks for watching!
The mistakes are invaluable experience. I personally love that you and Nick Zammeti leave them in, because when I start I'll have that base knowledge. Like you said, if you leave them out, we don't learn!
Thank you very much!
I'd say what I thaught that thing looked like, but you'd have to boot me!! Very nice piece once again. Love the color!!!
That’s what I thought the first time I seen it, lol. Thanks
Omg your son made the steady rest? Cool! The clever apple didn’t fall far from the tree 😎😎😎
Agreed! 😜😜 Thanks
Like other commenters, I don't actually turn, but enjoy your commentary as you go. I don't know how you stayed so patient with the leaks - I would have given up. Another gorgeous piece, belongs in a palace.
Got too much invested in it to quit, lol. Thanks for watching
That walnut is a beautiful piece of wood.
The vase us beautiful too.
Thanks 😊
That resin sure pops in the walnut. Great job Jim!
Thank you very much
Yay, got to watch a new video from Jim on my birthday! Looks great!
Happy Birthday! Here's to many more.
Great! Happy birthday!
I named my cat 'Lightning', as it is my favorite part of a Thunderstorm. the power of lightning and the beauty of it have kept me in awe since childhood.
Thanks
I can't wait to see what you do with that one particular, interesting, intriguing, enticing, exciting, piece....... of wood. LOL!
It’s a tough one, lol. Thanks
Thats gorgeous!!!!!!! . Thanks for sharing! And teaching, even about the mistakes we can make, thanks for keeping it real.!
You are so welcome!
Superior patience and workmanship! Hava Goodun Jim
Thank you very much
The old saying "no pain no gain" but having to clean your work bench is a lot of pain and no fun. Well you won over it in the end. Well, now I know I'm a dirty old man...LOL Some very nice burls to work with, can't wait to see some of those posts down the road. With the gold at the bottom the resin does look like lightning. The walnut is stunning, as is the entire piece. Just an outstanding work of art sir, very beautiful indeed. I know this piece was a lot of work and thank you for that and your work behind the camera. 🌿 ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Yup, one of those trailer pieces is going to be a challenge, lol. Thanks!
Your talent and imagination are astounding, they seem to know no bounds
Thank you very much!
7:30 That's the color I like, what spilled on the work bench 🙂💟💟💜💜 13:27 Those colors really go good together.
Thank you! Cheers!
It’s the best watching experienced tradesmen running into problems and sharing the entire process with us in their videos!! Bravo 👏🏼 it shows that even the best have to troubleshoot as they go!! Great work mate 👍🏼👍🏼 from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘
Couldn't agree more! Thanks
@@SpragueWoodturning Ps - have you ever thought of running an LED Strip through the epoxy (actually embedded) during the pour? Have the connection/power plug out the base to plug in? I think it would look amazing!! (I’d try it but I don’t have the tools and skills to try just yet 🤣🤣 Definitely looks like a polar bear 🐻❄️ and a …… 😉😂 🤣🤣🤣 First video of yours that I’ve watched and I’ve immediately hit the Like and Subscribe buttons!!! 👌🏼👌🏼
Hi Jim you have impressed me yet again with turning this beautiful vase. I liked the journey around your workshop looking at your different bits of wood you have some fabulous pieces of wood. The way you advice us and show us what is good for you and might be helpful to us when we do our turning thank you Jim. This piece of wood and the resin are cool the wood has fantastic grain, marking and cracking we're the resin goes into and colouring, I love the piece of walnut wood. Take care Amanda xxxx
Thank you very much!
Thank you for showing the whole process, the good, bad and ugly 🙂. Great job on the piece 👌
Thanks for watching!
Designer Epoxy. Beautiful vase.
Thanks!
Wow !!! Walnut Beautiful Jim ❤
Thank you kindly
And the verbal descriptions help so much.
Great, thanks!
Jim, Thank you for another outstanding production. Excellent beautiful vase….
Thanks for watching
I was lucky enough to purchase this truly beautiful piece from Jim. Even after the British Taxman charged me £200 to import it😡it was worth every penny. Jim is a true craftsman. Many thanks 😊
Wow, I’m sorry to hear this! Is this Duty that was charged or just a tax of some sort? If so I was under the impression that duty didn’t apply to art pieces which this is? Thanks again for you’re purchase!
@@SpragueWoodturning Hi Jim, yeah they applied Value Added Tax to it, a sales tax. But hey, that’s the British system for you! I was going to challenge it but I was worried the vase was in some bonded warehouse with things getting thrown on top of it! Didn’t want to take the chance. It was still worth every penny. Keep up the good work and I hope to add another piece in the future. Thanks again Jim.
Your extra hard work definitely paid off! Love the colors... Always a sucker for blue. 💙
Thanks for watching
Great video, good idea having extra small forms around to pour leaking "Designer Epoxy " into so it doesn't get wasted 😉
Thanks for watching
It was a tough go, but you ended up with a really nice piece. I also appreciate you leaving in the lessons learned, I enjoy the journey and the lack of pretense.
Thank you very much
I love that vase. oh my, it is a beauty. I would have been one of the viewers to ask about water so I'm glad you answered that.
Thanks for watching
Beautiful! Just beautiful! Thanks for sharing❤️❤️👍
Thank you very much
Kintsugi for wood. What a splendid idea. Congrats
Thank you very much
Turned out awesome!. I appreciate showing mistakes anyone can make and how to correct them.
Thanks 😊
That is, in fact, an awesome vase.
Thank you very much
that kintsugi effect is gorgeous
We will be seeing more of it in the future. Thanks
WOW! This is so lovely! There were some interesting pieces in the trailer. You know we are all thinking it! I am truly dissapointed that I didn't get to see you fight to get out of a bucket though! I would love to see footed bowls from you!!!!!
Carving is really not my thing but someday I will tackle it here. Thanks for watching!
Wow!! This piece is gorgeous! It’s the same colors as my favorite NFL team. The colors are so pure they look like jewels especially the gold!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely love it. The gold was a lovely extra!
Thanks 😊
What a beautiful piece walnut is my favorite and the designer epoxy works well in it!! Thank you!!
Thanks for watching
The color made the wood stand out! Love the wood 🪵
Me too! Thanks 😊
Designer epoxy. That trailer of wood would be very much at home outside my shop. Heal overs and burls are my favorite woods.
Yes, lots of interesting pieces in that trailer. Thanks
