Cool.very cool. I would use an adjustable four jaw chuck, but skipping a revolution for one jaw is more creative!
How likely is it that the desired offset will be the same as the offset created by skipping a thread? Not likely at all, also the offset will be altered depending upon the diameter of the material being used.
All he did was feed the jaw in on the wrong tooth. This is a normal three jaw assembled incorrectly
@@marcusfrostenson9959 That's the whole point Duncan is making. You can only skips a whole number of threads on the scroll inside the chuck so have extremely limited choice of offset. This is what a four jaw chuck is for.
This is definitely a time killer video. It COULD have shown how accurate 'off

Please just get out the 4 jaw chuck so you can make a proper offset.
As a German industrial mechanic you need another tool called *Drehherz in German* to create such forms.

Wut makes no sense?? Why on earth would you need a "Drehherz" (lathe dog) you only need one when you are turning between 2 centers to ensure the work from slipping in between the centers /facepalm
@@SW-qr8qe lathe dog but close enough and yes only when you are turning between 2 centers to ensure the workpiece from slipping while turning (if you can damage the face you could use a face driver instead of the lathe dog)

I mean well if you cut a center into your workpiece off-center and then turn it between center with a lathe dog it could work but saying "you need another tool called Drehherz to create such forms isn't true tho" (face driver for example)
As a non German non mechanic, I find myself pleased by this video
I have two lathes, the big one is the fun one. When you try to adjust the jaws it can be annoying but you get good at it.

@john smith you could probably do it pretty accurate if you punch a hole on the part off center and use a center in the chuck with a dog. Or maybe some gauge blocks on one or more of the jaws would be better. Im pretty new to machining so i really have no idea 😂.

Had a brand new 10k table threader show up at a job site like this. Took me 10 minutes to figure out why I couldn't center up.... Passed Q.C. and everything. They skipped a thread in the 3 point chuck.
The surface finish makes my skin crawl.

Most people do this for grinding crank shafts. I think this was just a demonstration
@@gingie5246 no they don’t. They use specialized 3 jaw chucks for that, they’re on a sliding mount. Unless your crankshaft is offset by that thread amount there’s no way to actually indicate it true
@@MathewHammond1 I should re phrase this… I’ve used this method as a rudimentary way to polish a crankshaft. I learned how to do it from my grandpa who found unorthodox ways to do things apparently. I’m sorry I didn’t do research on the topic and just assumed that I wasn’t the only one who did that. My grandpa also was the type of person who made a bush hog for a tractor out of a Ford 9 in rear axle because mowers were too expensive.
@@gingie5246 well grinding and polishing are 2 different applications so I can see it working for a hand polish. Your grandpa sounds like an innovative man! The guy who started the company I work at made the first lathe for it out of a washing machine.

Definitely just a time killer video. It COULD have shown that ACCURATE offset turning can be done with some lengthy trig. (there IS a formula) and the calculated thickness shim in a three jaw chuck when you don't have a four jaw. Nothing to see/learn here people - just move along...
