Tune in for beautiful Japanese Zippo fluid lighters! Tokyo Pipe Co. manufacturers vintage style trench lighters under the Douglass, Neo, and Marvelous brands. In this overview video we check out the Douglass Field L Lighter & S model as well as the Neo 1, 2, and 4 models, and finally the Marvelous Lighter, a whimsical steampunk lighter with visible gearing.
All of these letters are available at Urban EDC Supply, which provided the lighters for review. I personally love how unique and collectible each of these lighters are!

    • Hi there, -I’m sorry to say that by all intents and purposes what the narrator had impressed you enough to draw out of you to comment, -and “please” don’t take this as a “personal” sniping rebuke loaded to the max with contrary disdain. No please don’t take this as a personal jibe, but what our narrator did so well was basically to cover the Cosmetic side of the designs for all the lighters in the video, but he completely missed or virtually missed the the beautiful functions and hidden extras that gave these lighters their reputation. And I will cover the points of real value in my own comments which I’m sure you will notice. But, just as a little treat the Douglas Field Lighter S is when fully closed is completely waterproof but that is just one little example of what he missed and aught to have illustrated in depth. So hang on and I’ll try to fill in some holes.

  • You didn't mention a lot of very cool features and details of these lighters. The field S for example is fully water proof as well as leak proof. extra fuel and extra flint storage in the fuel cap. A plunger design instead of a long zippo style spring for flint pressure and retention. It also comes with a great maintenance kit containing extra gaskets and a wick with a cool wick starter that makes feeding the wick into place very easy. I truly love these lighters they are fantastic.

  • I got a zippo as I love the custom look and the way they look in general, they are also durable and high quality. The only problem is the fuel running out on the traditional insert which is why I've ordered a soft flame butane insert so I don't have to top up constantly as I don't smoke but want a good everyday carry but still want to use a zippo.

  • I would go for the douglas field S. Worth mentioning is that it's 100% waterproof and it conceals a reserve fluid tank in the buttcap as well as a secondary storage compartment within the buttcap itself to hold a reserve flint (Russian doll style)... an amazing piece of craftmanship. O'rings at all stages !!! nd last but not least, it's supposed to hold gaz for at least one year... not that bad in my opinion... btw, I'm a (future ex) Zippo guy.

Pipe smokers don't want the S because you're held at distance due to the wind shroud, lots to know about these. There is no posted link for the L, which sells through this vendor for 29 less than on Amazon, so research well. I can't afford one. I keep studying on it and obviously it's gonna' pay off. These are the best prices to date. Soon I'll bite the bullet, take the plunge, jump the shark, ooooooh, I can't wait! Yes!

They've held since so if I were you I'd lock tight them in the beginning to save time. It completely seals when you screw it closed so you don't have to worry about refilling it every 2 weeks like a zippo. Also I inadvertently found out it's completely waterproof which saved me when I was camping.

    • @@jordank5476 yeah but I mean how often and how long would you have to be using the thing to make it dry out that fast. When they say fill it up they mean like literally fill it to you see the fluid build up in the wadding. If you only put a couple drops in it it'll only last that day. There's a trick I learned that makes them last a lot longer. Put a peace of bike tube around it and roll it down when you're ready to use. It makes it waterproof and makes the fuel last longer.

    • @@squarepusher645 Seems like it buddy. I'm a pretty decent DIY myself and I could not find a mean to fix mine as I would have had to make a new thread in the upper cap and buy a new ballspring screw (which I don't know is available or not in Japan). The thickness of the metal used for the cap seemed to be the issue on mine as it was very thin and any trying to adjust the tension on the retaining spring would have ended up in tearing the thread (even if taking much care), which of course happened in no time. These things can happen, even on a expensive lighter. What I cannot stand is the behaviour of the manufacturer (I spoke directly to him) who never wanted to help me further letting me sort this thing on my own which was impossible without new parts. The only thing I could do was sending it back to Japan and pay full costs as if I was responsible for that (what he cleartly said...). Never again will I buy a single thing from this company.

  • Can’t stress enough that Urban EDC doesn’t help when you buy a piece of Japanese crap called the Douglass Field S lighter. Bought one (brass one) from them about a month ago and it’s useless. The lid won’t stay shut. They told me to take a hammer to it and also to try unscrewing the ring around the ball bearing to increase tension to keep it shut! Awesome!!! I spend 150 Canadian (shipping and duty) and they expect me to hit it with a hammer or start using pliers on it to unscrew the ball bearing ring. GARBAGE!!!!! Gets hot as hell, the flame is tiny and it won’t strike consistently. What a waste of money. Do not buy one!!

  • Reading through the comments I couldn't help but notice that this Guy *555* is rather selective in his replies. The questions that inquire further details of said product are not replied to; furthermore, some people here are highlighting his omissions on product features. One can almost draw a conclusion that this Guy doesn't actually use these lighters and he is simply being funded to sell you these lighters. He should be more transparent with this review.

    • That is simply not true. I usually try to reply to the first 48 hours of comments, good or bad. I still have and use all of these lighters.

  • Dear 555 Gear. What happened to the all the details that from when each lighter was conceived in design and gave each and every one of the Japanese Pipe Company Lighters in the video which you covered, and ultimately gave them the “reputation” which they were they were thankfully were awarded from concept and design. What was the basis in the narrative was well covered and executed in the video ultimately only gave leverage to the “cosmetic” side of the designs featured here. For instance, the first lighter being the Douglas Field Lighter L had a separate compartment for a spare flint which was built into the Closure Cap where fuel was added. :- And I would say without a doubt the Douglas Field Lighter S in it’s overall design wins hands down! It’s doesn’t cater for someone who reaches into their pockets and with the flick of a thumb you have instant fire. This is because it was designed and completely closed it has an O Ring built onto the floor of the lighter. So when the “wick cover” closes down and fastened this lighter is 100% “waterproof.” And that’s only half of the reputation for the S Design.. It also has built into the seal which is screwed tight after refuelling, the stud or seal has a duel compartment built into it so you can carry enough spare fuel to keep your lighter going until you get home to fill the lighter up again. But built onto the top of this seal is a secondary compartment to carry a spare flint as well. So every eventuality is covered. AND IT IS THIS THE REASON WHY THE DOUGLAS FIELD LIGHTERS HAVE GOT THE REPUTATION THEY HAVE TODAY.

  • I bought a neo three after watching this ‘smooth well presented video, completely disappointed with it.... you fill it and it’s evaporated in two days.... I thought I was buying a product that worked more efficiently than my Zippo, but as far as I can tell it’s a piece of junk.

  • DO NOT BUY THIS LIGHTER!!! douglass lighter field 👎🏼👎🏼 If you use this lighter even for 5sec the upper section really dose heat up pretty seriously it will burn your fingers or if you put it in your pocket without cooldown period it will burn you bad. It’s poorly design and overpriced.
