Barn Find!1938 Ford Hot Rod Pickup! OHV V8 Power!! Abandoned For 48 Years! Will It Run?!?
I recently purchased this 1938 Ford pickup in an online auction. It was hot rodded in the 1970s with a 283 from a Chevrolet car and a bunch of other hot rod parts. Near as we can tell it was last running in 1975! If you'd like to own this vehicle it can be yours in as shown condition for $9,500. As always, thanks for watching!

Really can’t decide whether I want to watch this video. Why do you have to Frankenstein everything that you get? Why do you put those stupid Chevy engines in a Ford get a small block Ford motor and put in it I know more people want Ford motors in their stuff and they’re not as available small block Chevy‘s, but try it once. Sheesh I like your videos but do something wrong right way once!
Well, the engine was already in it when I got it. And that Chevy made double the horsepower of the Ford flathead. Seems like a pretty reasonable option to me!
i don’t think a standout in reading and writing in grade school.
I don’t remember anyone asking for your opinion on what he does or doesn’t do with his own cars. If you don’t like it then don’t watch it. There’s plenty of us here that will watch it😘
Why don't you just go and buy one yourself? Then you'll be able to do what you like with it and only have yourself to criticise.
CHEVYS are more reliable
We could find fault with anyone we work with. I envy MoJo, the man is living his best life and what a resource of knowledge and hard work. Thanks Mortske for having him around.
My pleasure
Just get a recliner, put it in the corner of the shop over by the heater, get him a cup of coffee whenever his cup goes dry. That way when you run into something you can't fix mojo is on hand to show you how he fixed that same issue back in 1973.
Your treatment of mojo is really coming across as elder abuse
@@kevinkeller7054 Why do you say that?
@@toddhayes9955watch it kid 73’ wasn’t all that long ago in the grand scheme of things.
Best " Will it run" on the internet. With Duff and mojo you got the A team. Always nice to see Chin make an appearance.
Much appreciated
Cecil B. DeMille - David Lean - Alfred Hitchcock - John Huston - Mortske Repair! Epic Mortske Monday; the man follows through and gets it on the road. In three hours I watched the guy build a Hot Rod…Amazing. Best Supporting Actor: Duff!
he's the director as well!
I appreciate that you still keep it real and show how hard it can be to get stuff done instead of selling out and making everything look easy when it is not.
I wouldn't know how to handle anything easy!
@@MortskeRepair LoL 🤣😆
That truck is a great find. Back in the day we called that thing you pointed at and called it a "voltage regulator", we called a generator. I saw Duff roll his eyes. He is so tolerant.
my bad!
@@MortskeRepairlove the truck what's it cost
I'm glad Mojo is more comfortable talking to us. A joy to hear from him
⁶⁶😮5
Started rebuilding starters and alternators in my Dad and Uncle's shop when I was 11. Used an armature growler MANY TIMES! I knew that SOUND right away!!!
Mortske, I am glad you are the one that got this engine Because you took the time to actually check it out before starting it. One Of those air quotes barn find KZhead would have likely destroyed half that engine By starting it without noticing the broken rod.
3 1/4 hours of pure joy. Mortske finds the salt of the earth. You are the best!! Thank you.
A true Mortske Monday got up late ate breakfast watched Mortske, Mojo and Duff, going to lunch now then head to work. I could get use to this!
Poor Morski is a winner 🏆 you just have to appreciate all the good things about your partner 😀
I like your attitude and that you dont swear. Good job buddy.
Monday morning with Mortske, nice way to start my day
Holy cow!! 3 plus hours? It’s going to be a good Monday.
i can appreciate the emotional roller coaster reviving old stuck motors. I recently purchased a 1968 international travelall that had been sitting since 1982. everything was stuck. cooling system was solid with rust. ended filling the entire motor with trans fluid and diesel. two weeks later it rotated. it now runs and idles.
awesome!
That's super sick for a gremlin I watched the whole build and you guys reminded me of when my dad and me did that when he was alive keep doing it and I'll keep watching .
HEY! Good morning and thumbs UP! A 3 hour marathon! HELL YES!
Love hearing about these rigs, where they came from, what they were used for and how they were made to be functionally utilized. The real epitome of “make it work”
Yup
3 hours+... amazing. Miss second channel. Mortske minutes and maybe Mojo minutes? He is a wealth of knowledge that is fascinating to watch and listen to. He explains things in language I understand. Sir Duff is spectacular as usual. Kudos to Chin on flawless editing. Have a great day.
Glad you enjoy it!
Yes MOJO minutes!
I like it. I agree with the "natural" finish on the motor. It looks great and fits the look of the truck. Always enjoy the videos!
Nice 38 Ford, it’s looking good, diamond in the rough. Great video.
On all lathe chucks the jaws can flip.. just note they should be numbered to put them back in numerical order so they pine back up for "self centering". But correct, all the lathes where I work are 4 jaw chucks. Great work!
I think this is the longest video yet. I have had to watch it in sections, thanks for sharing this and good morning to you Mortske and company!
Hope you enjoyed it!
of course I did , there all good content as always, enjoy your evening.
Thank You Chin for the awesome editing! Thank Mortske for the video!
Huge thumbs up for Mojo and the growler. He has a couple of years on me but they were still teaching the use of a growler when I was in trade school. Awesome tool, always an awesome show.
I work during the night and coming home to a cool 3 hour vid is reaal nice this morning. I hope you and your crew, friends, puppy are doing good.
Great job, you have my vote for a KZhead Grammy on this one. Excellent.
Milwaukee
All that rust just blew right out of the drinkers side! You’re golden!
That was an awesome video. To spend time with slick and Bill was special.
Yes it was!
Good morning Mortske and The Amazing Duff Dog 🐕
Having fun watching some one else work!
I rewired my ATV while watching your little show and enjoyed it thank you very much😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Seeing Duff come out of the rain must've been an assault on the sinus! He no doubt didn't smell like a flower shop! I'll take a 38 Ford over a new F150 Lightning any day!
Early on in this video you showed securing the pickup to the trailer and did a voice over of the seller's recall of the truck's story. This worked perfectly so please do more of this! Happy New Year!
Appreciate the feedback!
My dad had one of those when I was little and it was really old then. But what a sweet truck! Dad sold it almost as fast as he got it. He could make everything run great! It was black with dark green fenders. This was great! Keep up the great videos!
A Mortske marathon!! 3 hours man, I like it !! I'm starting the video now at 8:33 pm. Time for some refreshments and my easy chair!!
It's pretty amazing, at the farm you picked up your truck(s), in the woods back where all those 50s cars and trucks are, just how they almost go back to nature. They aren't necessarily all rotted, but they all LOOK like their surroundings. They're somewhat rusted brown and any paint that was on them seems to have just turned a blue-green and they all just kind of camouflage and well go back to nature. Amazing find there, like you said, you'd never know any of that was back there. How neat is that?
Wouldn’t be Monday without Mortske! Just the greatest 😊😂
Mortske Monday, yippee 😊
Duffy. Duffy duffffy....woooooog!
3 hours! Awesome but might have to watch it in pieces.
I'm definitely gonna have it to watch it in split up pieces
@@j.w.s.9193 think it goes by hours watched.
Yep. That’s my m.o.
That was fun and edumacational ! Thanks 👍.
Not one but two 289 massages - always appreciate your willingness to tear anything apart and fabricobble what needs it to get the heap running and rolling. Thanks for sharing!
This length of video are the ones from which I learn the most. Case in point, I bought a set of six point wrenches for brake bleeders and the one way check valve (both of which are amazing) thanks to a long will it run video. So much knowledge to be had.
Nice!
I love that you respect the history of these vehicles and im thankful you shared it with us.
Glad you like them
3h of Duff, what an amazing Monday. Mortske was pretty good too. 😂
What a cool looking truck! The engine that was in it was so tantalizingly new and yet so rusty. Once you clean it up and dingle ball hone it will come around. I would like to see that. Thanks for another excellent video!
Right on
Having two 1939 Ford pickups with one being a flatbed, I can't wait to get into watching this episode!!!!
I have never been one to watch long videos, but this one i didnt mind one bit. I am glad you took the time to go through that drivetrain like you did. Duff dog has it made.. he smiles all day long. I really like the look of that truck 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
much appreciated!
The Job Rated hood scoop was used on Super Duty Pontiacs in 62-63. GM bought them from Ford!
What an amazing truck! Great find Mortske... Amazed!
Very smart move on pulling engine!! There Alot of good parts there! Good video!!
absolutely!
Oh man! What a great history on that thing! Such an interesting old thing. I'm glad you're able to save these old rigs as well as sharing their stories. Im only a few mns in... but i was compelled to comment. Thanks Mortske 😊
much appreciated!
Excellent call on breaking it down & cleaning it up. What a find?! Congrats on finding such a gem sir! I didn't realize it's was going to be 3 hrs either. Hell yeah!! 😅😁
Love the idea of using what we have to make a hot rod! Another great project by Mr. Mortske!!
Another great and LONG video. Love it!! More Mojo too!!! Really appreciate your passion for saving these much older classics. That thing looks so sweet already. All the best to you and Duff!! 👍💪😎
Nice find !! The Lil 283 block is a gem .. steel crank hi compression pistons .. i built a few back in the day and they were screamers !! Looks like small valve heads but for a driver itll be ok.. i would use different heads but thats just me .. also depending on cam ya might wanna atleast pin the studs or install screw in.. i hope you continue sharing progress with the engine / truck.. I very much enjoy your channel and your encouraging me to get back out into shop and continue with my projects.. keep up the good work !!
Leaf spring wraps were very common. My 46 Ford had them. My dad had a long needle that you fit a grease gun to and ran under the covers to lube the springs. Some covers did have their own fittings though. And I still have that old needle from pop's service station days!
Awesome content as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
I would love to see that intake and valve covers polished and re clear coated maybe a how to????
Hey Mortske, you're lucky finding an old hot rod in such good condition, especially with the history, that's pretty neat!
3 hour Mortske ? I bet Chin spent many a sleepless night working on this one.
He's the real MVP of this video!
🗿 thanks Chin👍👍
3 hours of Mortske, Duff, Chin, and Mojo..and Melvin...PRICELESS!!!!! The more ya know(Chin can I get some ad music here???) Do do do dooooooooooo!!!!!!!!@@MortskeRepair
Long dong one here
Should have been obvious wasn't a Mortske swap has the flexy hose nightmare.
Nice seeing the good Ole stuff being brought back
Excellent episode, and an excellent example of how one modification can expand into 12 when you're building a hot rod. Funny that the '66 2bbl 283 has Power Pack heads, while the 'hot rod' '59 283 doesn't. It'd be cool to hear how that cammed engine runs! And I'm pretty sure those are the most words I've ever heard Mojo speak on this channel...
Yeah. Pop-up pistons, "hot cam" and 2-barrel heads... Wooo. What a combination!
The pistons are at least 11:1 with those domes. It's also a forged crank (you can tell by the wide, ground forging line. The valve springs and retainers are also larger than factory 283 valve springs. With those springs - make sure the rocker studs are at least pinned (or they can pull out).
good to know
Excellent project and wonderful video. Not surprised on the price but it likely going to sell fast. My 64 Corvette 327 365 HP had pistons like that 283. It was 11 to 1 compression. So that 283 could be a great little motor for another project. Duff was looking good. D
THE 2 Flat pieces of metal you were talking about look like they may be a door hinge cover maybe for the inside of the door, 1 on each side more than likely top hinge. Just a guess Mr. Mortske, but I hope it helps if it is rite. You asked about these when yo were talking about the LOTS you had to purchase on the show.
That's a good candidate for a build where you just make a solid daily driver nothing over the top just a good solid finished out car. I love it just can't afford it. Beautiful car this comment was for the 63 Pontiac barn find. It switched videos while I was writing. I'm slow on the texting thing. Lol
Right on
Very cool Hot Rod!!!!!! 👍👍
Sure is!
@@MortskeRepair 😉 🤜🤛
Pretty nice 283, steel crank, should be fun once you rub the ruff edges off, thread the crank for a damper bolt, not that much fun when they fly off. Pretty nice pickup, very dry body, saved a lot of labor on rust repair, should be a beauty when you work the bugs out.
3 hours of Mortske, love it!!!
Brilliant! An epic 3 hour show. Thanks Mort (and Chin).
our pleasure!
I was born in Ontario, OR. LOSTA SUGAR BEETS GROWN THERE!
Another great Monday with Mortske and Duff Dog! My day is complete!
That bug is sick!! Can’t wait for the progress.
Watched all your vids keep it up man love seeing you revive cars n trucks
Thanks! Will do!
That Volkswagen was Neat 😂
What a great little rig. Things in great shape. Duff looks great after his cut and bath.
Awesome Mortske Monday that I had to carry into Tuesday! Loved this video! Hope to see more of that truck soon! It’s a keeper! 👍👊🙏
Useless fact: around me they use beet juice to treat our roads in the winter it helps the salt melt stick to the road which aids in ice control. 🤓
Neato, I never knew that!
We used beet juice in tractor tires for weight and it doesn’t freeze lol
Such a versatile juice! What's it taste like?
@@MortskeRepair hard to believe but it tastes like….well you know 💩
Puddin drinks beet juice, the man that ain't gonna freeze!
38's although not well received at the time are just coolest 30's truck in my book. The addition of a 283 makes it a perfect machine! Great content, I'll have too take in after work . All the best to you and Duff
Man shut the heck up all the best? This dude is a spoiled brat when have u ever seen this dude really Work? I ain’t talkin about playing with cars either?
Wow, thank you for sharing this loooooooong video Mortske.😊
Great video! Love watching you save these classics. Mojo is a wealth of knowledge!
he absolutely is!
Right on time!
What did we do to deserve 3+ hours of Mortske on a Monday? Nothing!
Amen.! Shhh don't jinx us!
Don't have time to watch in one night. Do enjoy coming home from work to continue watching first half of the week.👍
The galaxy wagon is great, a tiny bit out of your wheelhouse but id love to see it come back.
Was like going to movies took all afternoon Great hope u do over that small block has a lot of good stuff done to it great show
Love the front grill on that old beauty! Great job Mortske. I’m sure the guy you got it from would be so happy to know you got it rolling again.
There is No such thing as a*"front grille"it's just a grille !!!!!!!!!! 😮👍😎
@@richardanderson5109 of course. It was extremely early. Needed my chai tea.
Those cars in the trees surprisingly had a lot of good glass. Definitely tons of excellent parts. If you did make a deal, (which I hope you did, it would be sad for all that stuff to become shitty appliances) the salvage operation would be an excellent video in itself.
Crushed and shipped to China most likely…
Glad you got it going keep it coming.
I enjoy most car shows. Thank you for such a class act Sir. i have enjoyed many assorted autos in the past 42 years, never had the money to enjoy working on them in such depth.
Thanks for the kind words Steven!
Yes!
Some Mortske!! Aye your cousin put in work on our eagles game vs Miami!!
So I hear!! Was too busy working to watch it unfortunately...
Im late on this one...I think it's cool when you get the story of the rig you're getting by the guy who had it. Great video and thanks to everyone involved!🐾🍺
Great videos like this are why you are the number one CAR channel on KZhead ! Excellent mortske !
Thanks for the kind words!
I need a bigger garage, I would buy this in a second...
3 hours and 18 minutes! Going to be long one lol
You do have a good engine Mortske... good & dirty! 😂 Very cool truck & good call to take 283 apart my man. 👍
Love the front/grille styling of this era Ford truck. But ain't no way I have time to sit and watch a 3 hour video. Might have to break it up into half hour chunks and watch it all week. EDIT: Growing up near Detroit Lakes in the 80's I knew a lot of retired guys around there that would drive potato, beet, and grain trucks during harvest. It was pocket cash for traveling south for the winter. EDIT again: Corn head grease is the solution for any old steering gear box. It is what the old VW enthusiast crowd has used for years, especially in old buses. Also, can anyone else smell that old 80/90 right through the screen?
That smell...yep. no 3 hr vids for me either I fall asleep after 1 hour of watching anything
Nothing like the lovely wood grain contact paper dashboard!
Ewwwww
Epic video. You're going to have to start rolling credits at the end for all your guest star appearances 😊😊😊😊. Keep on saving them👍👍👍👍
Loving the longer videos sir. I work all day long on Monday knowing Mortske will most likely have a new video up and it's WHAT 3 hours. That's awesome sir. That is coolsville
I appreciate that!
Congratulations on getting the '38 Ford pick'em up running! Ho-boy, what a saga😊. I saw one of the haters was giving their opinion on using a Chevy engine in a Ford. I agree that if they want it that way, they should supply you with small block 302/351c. Well, good luck with it and I'll tune-in next week to see you and Duff tackle another project.
