My First Big Shark from the Kayak

I was hunting tarpon, so I had the big tackle with me. There were no silver kings around, so I went after a shark instead. The manatee getting involved was totally unexpected.
Turned out to be a good lesson on fighting big fish.

  • I've never seen this type of fishing done before, and it appears to be extremely amusing. I found the best parts of this video to be the sheer enjoyment of the act, the excitement of the matinee and shark combined and the reaction from being in "unknown territory" with these large animals. I also greatly enjoyed the end, where he shares a critical lesson in fishing (which in my mind is an extension of hunting via. many ways to perform the action) that patience is important, but so is properly preparing yourself mentally for the task at hand and how hard it is to be prepared when you've never experienced something like this before. Learning is good, even if mistakes are made, and I'm sure by his reaction he will pass on his newly acquired knowledge with enthusiasm and respect to future fishers. Congratulations on a good hunt, and best wishes for many more. Thank you for sharing.

He put an outboard motor on a kayak and shows a lot of trade secrets on how things are done in a kayak shop. Mad respect, he thanks his film crew, subscribers , and basically everyone involved in his success. He seems to be genuine. Glad we still have dudes like this out there in the world.

  • One of the best fishing films I've seen on 'the tube', love the editing & the Jaws references. My Son's pal in N.S.W. Australia paddled out of a little creek near Cabarita NSW & hooked into a VERY big fish that took him out over the reef miles out to sea. There's a story with photo's on an Aussy. kayak fishing magazine or site. Nice film. also take note people, long sleeve shirt & big hat, I've just had two skin cancers removed & that's no fun at all, like they say in Oz. slip slop slap.

  • Looks like you need to ditch the Flurocarbon, and get some seven strand, sleeves, and a crimping tool. I dont think that your drag had anything to do with the line breaking.... when the shark was running your line was parallel with the shark, i noticed both break offs were almost identical... the shark was in close and the your rod was at a high angle with the line at a steep angle to the sharks mouth. He shook his head and all those sharp teeth cut your line. You need wire marlin wire or seven strand.

One of my very first hook ups was a massive short fin mako. Probably 15'+ range. Breached and did one quick turn. Had a 3' cable leader and 80# mono. After the spin it was gone. Had 12' of mono that honestly looked like it was sanded with 36 grit paper. First and last mako hook up.

Just shouldn't be done unless it's an unfortunate case like it snapped while fighting he tightened down that drag to snap it purposely because he had no clue what to do knowing it was to dangerous to deal with that shark up the side of that kayak! Just stupid and unfortunate for that shark

  • Gotta use a wire leader when fishing the sea. Learned that lesson the hard way! Always ended up with cut lines. Even tho I get less bites ( assuming because they can see it ) I also loose wayyyy less fish once they're hooked. Everything in the ocean has treth5.

  • Shame you didn't get better shots of the shark. I film similar stuff here in Australia, although from a boat, kayak and a lot of walking too. I had a big fish spool me last week, 300m of 50 pound braid! Looking for ward to checking out more of your videos. All the best Andy.
