Yeah i couldn't work at a scrap yard. I'd want to bring everything home. Neat little engine!
In Europe, wornout Kubotas are worth a fortune in odd spare parts. The small 14A alternator is around 100$ used and manifolds, fuel pump, govenor, radiator etc. also worth a lot. The reason being that a lot of contracting equipment uses these engines, so spareparts are usually nedded in a hurry, so even used they are sold at a premium. I'm guessing this engine, as a usedbut working spare, could be sold for 1000$ over here.
When ever I go to a scrap or junk yard I usually come out heavier than when I went in. I just exchange stuff.
I hear ya bro.

Sunday coffee and a mustie video, it’s a good morning
Only thing missing was the fact its raining so I am not out back with a cigar as well.
Yes, a cup of Joe and a great video like this on Sunday morning is the best.
Yes!
That little engine looks almost new! It should be a criminal offence to throw that down like they did. I have seen these in light plants, such as the construction site light plants used for night road work. They have a single phase generator in the 5 or 10 kW range.Probably the stator winding went out or the controls went bad on it and someone was too incompetent to fix it.The throttle lever would have gone to either a plate with a nut, for a manual, pre-set speed; or it could have gone to an electronic governor device, which would make small movements to it to maintain 60 cycle (3600 RPM) operation. The shutoff would have been an on/off solenoid which would have allowed the operator's switches (or the low oil pressure / high jacket water temp switches) to stop the engine when needed. These are highly in demand. The generator sets when complete fetch great money and are an often stolen piece of equipment from rental fleets. You're lucky to have that. The oilfilter painted with Kubota green really makes me think this was a new unit which was replaced under warranty. That engine probably has very, very few hours on it.
My question is "Why was that in the scrap? What sort of idiot would throw away an engine as lovely as that?". To us 'yachting-on-a-tight-budget' types an engine like that is pure gold. It's the perfect engine for a small launch, or any yacht in the 20-35ft range.
He said it was a generator and the generator was bad that's why they junked it
Worked on one like this in a motorhome , the control board went bad , they wanted $1800.00 for the board the old guy was kind of cheap and didn't want to fix it , so I took it out and he parked it in the corner.
You need to use Compression oil ... For a diesel...

"I don't know much about diesel engines" aannddd it is running.
it had nothing broken to begin with so...
It's cooked... :(
@ In what way?
@ what leads you to that conclusion?
Diesel fuel doesn’t go bad, so if it ran last & hasn’t been broken/dropped since then & broken any internal parts she should start right up once the fuel system has been primed.

That's the "Royal we" eh?
Don't forget a Diesel fuel filter when you fit it somewhere. Otherwise the injectors will clog.
The tap below the lift pump is the coolant drain tap. You figured out the bleed screw is the 10mm nut on the injector pump. Always use the glow from cold, a lot easier on the starter motor. Changed many a burnt out starter on a Kubota due to constant cranking when cold or out of fuel. Depending on the spec of the engine the starter will also take out the stop solenoid, hi rev solenoid and coil commander if fitted when it fails due to cranking too long, especially on a nearly discharged battery. Swap the lift pump for one with a priming lever, can save a lot of grief lol.
swap the lift pump with the electric ones used on Kubota G1700, G1800, and G1900 engines and you will totally get rid of a ton of grief!
У Куботи дуже швидко перегрівається стартер, очевидно це їх конструктивний недолік.

This is a treasure motor, keep it n don't sell it Mustie. Cheers. It's a KUBOTA
I agree to, i have the eksakt same engine my 15 foot boat. Allways run, allways start. A cracking little engine.
I will buy it from him
No way Roman. Just for fun.
I am so glad that you got it running. As a boat builder, there are so many uses on a boat for a diesel power. Such a neat video. I learned some things. Thank you. I hope you found a good home for it.
I know folks hate using ether,or easy start( or ‘start you bastard’,as I like to call it) but a regular propane torch,or even a burning newspaper( I suggest the guardian,if in the UK). In the air intake really helps a stubborn diesel get a wee head start..... good job Mustie, you inspire us all to keep going, never give up!

Hi mustie, your persistence paid off in the end. I let out a big cheer when it started. Woohoo! I spotted a similar engine running a home built log mill. Super reliable and will go forever. Love diesels. Hope you keep it, it's a gem. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
The thing with the handle near the fuel pump is probably the manual priming pump, you unscrew it and work it like a bicycle air pump.
Yep. Diesels require a priming pump to eliminate the air between the tank and the injection pump. Sucks when your pump cavitates and your diesel engine blows light blue smoke due to running lean.
Pretty much all small Diesel engines I’ve ever seen have a primer lever on the fuel pump in case of running the tank dry.
To bleed, pump the hand pump, the bleed screw open, close when clear fuel come. Then crack (1/2 turn) open the injector tube at the injectors and crank until fuel comes out with no bubbles and close. ( only a few cc per stroke will come out) Be sure trottle is NOT at STOP. Yanmar or Kubota engine with original paint on filter.
That little tap you unscrew under the pump is the coolant drain for the block.
What a sweet running little engine! hard to believe that some one would toss a good diesel engine they are NOT cheap!
IKR, you can do a ton of stuff with it.
Id personally make a buggy or something because of the good torque
Not cheap at all, I have a Lombardini LDW 502M 13 hp, 2 cylinder 505cc with TMC40 gearbox, it's an inboard motor and the book price new is around 6500 euro dollars incl. tax. He would be better off selling it on for a replacement for a small excavator or the like.
@@@charlesangell_bulmtl your right, you can buy a little kubota with a defect engine for next to nothing. I removed my engine from my boat as didn't have to time to sell it complete and can get more just for the engine than I wanted for the boat and mooring combined. Unbelievable that some body would dump that motor. Happy to see it saved.

Your perseverance is admirable. I’m learning that I give up too easily he working on an engine that won’t start. Thank you.
You've given me a hunger to go out to my barn and bring back to life a small rototiller that's been sitting there for about 14 years! Come spring I think I'll go in there and do some wrenching myself! It's been too long since I've turned a bolt or two. Thanks, Mustie! And as a little afterthought, I love your great attitude and how you chuckle at things when they go awry!
the solution for your waste oil......will run forever 👍
I fed all my used oil from cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers, etc., to my big trucks. When you carry 240 gallons of diesel, dumping in a gallon of used oil makes no difference other than to darken the fuel. Anything in that oil would be caught by the truck's fuel filters, which were changed about every 30,000 miles. Never ever had a problem.
Yep, old vegatable oil will be cool.
@@barryhopesgthope686 Veggie oils good if you strip the glycerin backbone and make methyl esters, otherwise you get glycerin gumming everything.
Filtered used transmission fluid works great as well.
@@Taydrum Thank you.
That was a good one to get, they say those little Diesels will work forever if you keep the fuel and oil clean, and in a little tractor..or a sailboat that would be a great engine.
niceguy217 I don’t think that little engine makes enough power to run a little tractor
@@kaic9712 many of the smaller tractors have as little as 10-15hp engines stock..at least the older ones I had in mind when I said that..some even lower, so it would be a fine replacement.

Just a bit too big and heavy for a regular bicycle frame. Maybe a more motorcycle-like frame and tires will sustain a motor that big.

I keep bringing home junk from the scrap yard myself. Picked up a 15KW 1998 Onan marine generator a couple weeks ago. Has a 4 cylinder kubota diesel. Gave the forklift operator $50 and he took it from the junk pile and put it on my truck. Replaced the electric fuel pump and had it purring like a kitten the next day. It's gonna sound crazy but I swear I caught a wiff when it fired up
I second that, the mind is playing trick on us.
When I read this I caught a whiff of BS.. and I was right!
Totally, I had the same experience...that's pretty wild!! LOL!!!
Technically, you didn't smell it. For all other purposes, you did. Your mind knows the smell and your association recalled it. You perceived it, and everything you experience about the natural world comes via your perception. Did you know there's a whole bunch of birds like Peacocks that don't have any blue pigmentation in their feathers? They're not really blue, it's the way that light refracts off their feathers. You are seeing the blue wavelength of the light spectrum. The rest got cancelled out through wave interference. So, the bird is technically not blue, but for all other purposes, it is. Did you see a blue bird? Yes and no. There wasn't a blue bird, but you're perception knows it saw one.

It's been a while since Herr Doktor Professor (of all things broken) Mustie has posted so to feed my addicted to his vids I watched it again. 2 words: "Diesel Motorcycle"
Over the years of working on diesel engines, I made a tool that really works. Consisting of a clear vinyl tube with a check valve at one end which also served as a veight on the end. This saved me so much frustration dealing with smelly oily diesel fuel. And I never had to deal with a no prime issue too. Plus this tool was a great gas siphoning jaget to boot. The engine sound great. Bet you the mechanic who took out the engine and scraped it was a poor shoemaker who was practicing to be a mechanic for sure. And I am sorry if I offended the shoemaker trade to boot. Would bet you that this would be perfect for a small tractor. Nice work with accurate information about engine sensor functions too.
