Hitting: Five shots every great hitter should master
As coaches, we often talk about ball control. What we don’t train enough is hand control. In this video, Coach Nabil Mardini outlines the five shots every player should master to become a great hitter.
1 - Straight away: Straight hit that lands in the deep court
2 - Wrist away: Angled hit that lands inside the 10-ft line
3 - Cutback: Hit directed down the sideline
4 - Tip, off-speed or roll shot: Variable-speed shot directed to a strategic location
5 - High and flat: High, flat hit purposely directed off the top of the block

  • Finally someone teaching tools that are important. As a collegiate coach, too often I see high school players who have no idea how to hit the ball down the line (thumbs up) or hard cut (thumbs down). When I ask them why they can't hit those shots, their reply is that they were never taught those shots by their high school or club coaches. Other times players say that their coaches thought those shots were too high level to teach them. The most interesting thing to me is that there are 5 ways to score that account for over 75% or more of all kills in any given game. 1. Line 2. Hard Cut 3. Hard driven ball to the last 1/3 of the court to the left or right of the middle back defender 4. Hard off the block out of bounds 5. High flat off fingers out of bounds. Watch any collegiate game & you will see this. Stanford uses these 5 ways to score over 86% of the time, Louisville 87% of the time & Georgia Tech over 83% of the time - just to name a few. Notice none of these shots are hit cross court to the Libero, center of the court or directly at the middle back defender. Those places account for less than 25% of all kills. I would suggest that you teach your high school players these shots & watch their kill percentage dramatically increase, their confidence increase & your team's winning percentage as well.

  • Sorry, but all I could notice during this session is how thick the female players' thighs were comparatively to the male players. It really highlights the biological differences between men and women when men have chicken legs but women have thicker legs, obviously to help for carrying the extra weight that comes with pregnancy. You'd think women could convert all that lower body fat to dominate men in things like vertical jumping (such as for spiking the ball) but they literally cannot. Why is this coach teaching a unisex class? He would do better with just one gender.

    • All true. But it’s a demonstration class. I think it’s appropriate to include both girls and boys. They don’t compete against each other, but only show the technique the coach is talking about.

    • Oh my gosh, what a ridiculous comment, who cares. He's likely doing a free clinic to whoever can make it. These are all great athletes.

    • What? Lol all of these shots are necessary in both the men's and women's game so what is your point?
