Billion dollar fraud on the Internet | DW Documentary

Interest-based investment portals on the Internet are one of the biggest scams of our time. People sign up, hoping to invest. Instead, they are cheated out of billions. In Germany alone, thousands of victims have fallen victim to their own gullibility.
Filmmakers Niklas Resch and Caroline Uhl meet with victims and investigators, then track down some of the perpetrators behind the scams. They discover that trying to put a stop to this kind of fraud is like tilting at windmills. Moreover: Victims and perpetrators may have more in common than they think.
Ulrike Schneider was cheated out of a lot of money. Ironically, she lost over 10,000 euros because she tried to do a good job investing her savings. She invested money with an online financial portal called TradeInvest90 because it promised good profits in a short time. What Schneider did not suspect: The portal was run by an international gang of fraudsters.
In the film, we also meet Adrian. In his late 20s, he was living in Kosovo with hardly any money. So when he received an offer for a well-paid call center job, he jumped at it. But he quickly realized that his job was illegal. His job was to pretend to be a financial market expert for portals such as TradeInvest90 - and thus to take money from German-speaking investors such as Ulrike Schneider over the phone.
Adrian and his colleagues bilked their victims out of millions - and earned enormous sums themselves. The head of this gang of fraudsters has become a multi-millionaire. He shamelessly squanders the savings of his victims.
The fraud continued for several years until investigators from the State Criminal Police Office in Saarbrücken put a stop to the gang - following a complex investigation. But others continue to steal vast sums of money using the same scam to this day.
The filmmakers have succeeded in providing a deep insight into the innermost workings of a highly organized gang of fraudsters. For the first time, the film shows original material from inside the call center. The documentary contrasts the views and motives of victims, perpetrators and investigators - and shows the psychological mechanisms at work in both the deceived and the deceivers.

  • Sadly, these kinds of scams are heavily advertised practically every day on KZhead. I am a heavy KZhead consumer and I have frequently reported such scams being advertised here to KZhead but the ads just keep coming back. What is KZhead doing about it? Nothing.

    • @AncoralmparoPiper: "What is KZhead doing about it?" Well, KZhead is making big bucks from it. Who do you think pays the bills for YT? In Business school (1983) our Professor asked us regarding TV infomercials, "why do they keep on beating us to death with these infomercials? No one responded. Then the Professor replied "because they work." Same principle here. A lot of people are beat to death by this marketing ploy just so a few can prosper. There are some people who were "born suckers". Why in the world would a normal person buy a "handheld electric heater" promising to "heat an entire room in minutes? Even more puzzling is the heater costs them a lot of money compared to the same heater Walmart was selling for under 5 dollars. Your original statement is answered by the huge amount of money the Ad(s) pay YT. Overall sales for these sales are low, the profits are very high, far more than the money they pay YT. These Ad(s) are f**King annoying. Look at all of YT ad's? Do you see any of them on "mainstream advertising"? That's a huge tip-off. It tells me TY is a "gold mine" for a lot of "Suckers'. PS: YT ad's are making many of us very angry. We are constantly pummeled by outright lies and gross exaggerations from the Ad's. As a businessman my interpretation is YT is losing Ad money from honest advertisers who don't want to be associated with the circus-of-lies on YT. Piper, also as a businessman this kind of activity tells me YT is desperate. So far all the stuff I see is YT is on a decline that may end its' life. The original idea was a great one. Greed and lies is changing that.

All they are looking for is luxurious lives, flexing on instagram with hot women and champagne, without working. Put them in jail, and don't fall for their bs. On another note, the sums involved are a drop in the ocean compared to how much UK taxed payers lost due to the 2008 banking crisis, and not one banker ever appologised, let alone handed back their bonus. So compare if you will the life decisions taken by the ex call centre worker interviewed here and the bank salesman knowingly selling junk bond insurance dressed as AAA rated credit default swaps. Not much difference, except the latter made much more and will never be prosecuted.

I had to go round and explain it all and tell her it's not real and then got her to call the banks and citizens advice. As you can imagine it was a thankless task. Lots of tears. Great fun.

    • It's happening in India too. Scammers are so talented that they use emotions, gain trust of people and prepare their mind to invest and loot money not allowing to withdraw money saying it's system that allows to withdraw money when task completed. Scammers ask for more, more more and more money saying you can withdraw this time, you can withdraw after investing more to complete task but it's never ending process they creat by them through system. Later their links and they disappear. They also force and tell to ask burrow from friends, relatives or apply for loan and complete task and withdraw the money and return to friends, relatives or the loan amount. But the task never ends, they go on looting more more more money making people without any Penny in their savings, increase debts, and make them commit suicide as the people atlast realise after loosing completely left nothing and remain in shocked. And scammers simply disappear and their links doesn't work. I experienced faced huge loss of money six lakhs. 😢😢
