Supercharged Jeep Rubicon Unlimited testing snow chains.

I didn't put the rear set on because I realized that I didn't have clearance for them between my rock rail and tire. I'll trim it down and try again. Just having them on the front made a significant difference.
All four chains on crazy terrain here: • Supercharged Jeep Rubi...
This isn't snow that has just fallen like you're use to. It's snow that has been on the ground all winter freezing and thawing. You could cut blocks of it out, you can walk on top of it. The Jeep almost drove on top of it. It's like clawing through a solid block of ice.

  • I read an article in Peterson's Offroad about snowwheeling. It said it's more effective to put your chains on the back because the snow that the front tires see is not packed and you still get good traction, but the snow the rear tires see is packed and that is where the chains will benefit you most. They also say that you should back up in your tracks and get some momentum and just keep doing it over and over. You are esssentially turning your axles and differentials into snow plows.

  • We always carried Chains for the front and the back. Go out, have fun, get stuck. Chain up the front, get unstuck, keep having fun. Get stuck, Chain up the back, get unstuck, time to go home.

    • No he doesn’t. Chains on all four tires or just two tires have the same effect which is none. The point of this video as well as the most recent video by primal outdoors channel is that chains are useless in certain situations. Heavy wet mushy deep snow can not be conquered with chains. They literally have a negative effect in two ways. First they simply dig your rig into holes that you cannot overcome. Second they give you a false sense of confidence that gets you stuck in the back country

  • Thanks, I had a pretty long discussion with the guy who runs tirechains dot comm and he suggested these. It's a Boron alloy square chain. It has a deeper "bucket" to move more material and holds up better for rock crawling etc. when the snow is intermittent.

  • This video is a good illustration of how any vehicle, no matter how good it is, can still get stuck in snow. I found that out the hard way when I drove into a culvert covered in deep snow in my 1996 ZJ a few years ago in upstate New York. I was stuck in seconds and had to get winched out by a tow truck.

I brought boards & shovels with me so I just hiked back to camp & dug myself out when we were ready to leave. Do you think the chains would work well on a snow covered dirt 2 track? The land isn't flat, but the inclines aren't very significant.

  • I like to wheel my jeep in deep snow. I typically don't use chains, I use an aggressive mud type tire and low air pressure. I start at 10 psi and sometimes go as low as 3 psi. I use extra low gear and idle to get on top of the snow. If I break through, I back up and go again trying not to spin. This procedure works very well and is the same method I use on my atv with tracks. Too much throttle will usually get you stuck!

    @davecamilleri9411@davecamilleri94113 жыл бұрын
    • 3psi? Bead locks on 35-37s I assume? That's crazy low.

  • My 1981 Datsun 4x4 truck just walked right up on top of the deepest snow and floated along. Of course, it had military -style 4 wheel independent suspension which placed the diffs way up above the snow.These things with the low diffs and old style springs just can't climb high enough to get on top and away. 16 u-joints made for higher first cost, but winter performance was unmatched.

    @wqpeb@wqpeb9 жыл бұрын
    • I looked up datsun 4wd truck on google and all I came up with were independent in the front and solid axle in the rear. Which model do you have?

      @blakbanshee@blakbanshee9 жыл бұрын
    • You are quite correct.I had tried out several different rigs over the years and the one coming to mind without the regular differential belonged to a man who lived near and i borrowed it a few times.That must have been what i was thinking about, as he had taken an old Willys jeep and put in a half-shaft indpendent rear end from what i know not and a Volvo motor. Strange how, being heavier, it could not climb up on the snow like my truck. It sure could walk over stumps and all though! Anyway, thanks for correcting my thoughts...that was a long time back and it must have been also the extra wide tires along with the independent military type suspension at front that made the snow crawling go so well for my datsun..I will never forget the 16 U-Joints needing replacement. Did that over two weekends.

      @wqpeb@wqpeb9 жыл бұрын
  • You did a good job on building that Jeep. A Flatlander is someone that is not all that experienced with the dangers and hazards of mountain driving in the Sierra snow up in the higher elevations here in California. Hence a Flatlander Jeep is a 4X4 that will eventually need a tow out of the snow, something that you will not be needing if you chain up all 4 tires there. I like what you did to your Jeep, looks cool, seems to have good power and potential to be a "snow crawler" there.

  • From every off-road video I've watched I'm getting the impression snow driving is the toughest. I stumbled upon your video researching; snow tires deep snow, trying to find the best option. I thought for sure your rig was going to handle anything winter related! Maybe tire pressure downing would help? I'm buying a 4x4 myself before winter as I deliver newspapers in snow storms now lol yay so excited lol thanks for posting the test. But as you said that is not fresh snow, I'm sure you blast threw fresh snow.

    • Gallant Bullies It is, and it tends to break things, esp with chains because of the loads you have on the drivetrain. If you chain up and have U-Joints, easy on the throttle while the wheel is turned since the U-Joint is weakest at that point. Also, if you have chains, air pressure becomes less of a concern, higher pressure will give you more ground clearance and the chains will give better traction than any bare tire at any pressure. Ground clearance becomes more valuable at that point, since you need to have the tire on the ground to gain friction. Once you're high centered, none of it matters.

  • Nice Jeep and good driving. Apparently not many have driven on ice-age snow and/or with chains. When you start spinning your tires fast with chains on, the chains pull away from the tires and can rip into your fenders and anything else they touch - very bad idea. The only suggestion I like here, if you didn't do it, is to air down to 12-15 psi. A little momentum would also help, but NOT hammering the pedal and spinning those chains fast That's my advice, and worth every penny ;)

The snow has been there for weeks if not months. It's not fresh fluffy snow. My contact patch was my entire tire and snow chains. Airing down wouldn't have done anything. Now, if I would have had my rear chains on...that may have and an impact. This video was really just a test run for the chains...

From what I've seen you don't need to lift a 2 door as much to get the same kind of clearance as a 4 door which is nice.. lower center of gravity etc. Plus they look cooler. I get alot of "but you can't get your groceries in it" Nice the back seat folds up completely! Then i get "then you can't carry passengers while doing groceries" then I say.. what passengers? if I had kids I wouldn't have a 2 door. So end.. you got kids need a 4dr

  • @allrightsreserveddnc Check out the video description and the linked video. It shows the Jeep in much tougher terrain with all four chains. I never expected this video of all of my videos to take off. This video is by far the most tame. The jerking, I'm assuming is the wheel starting and stopping? That is because there is so much force on the tires w/ the chains that the axle shaft is actually bending and springing back into place. Another indicator of the type of snow.

    @CharlesCo918@CharlesCo91812 жыл бұрын
  • I've got a powertank. I generally don't air up in snow because it's already surrounding the tire, so the tire doesn't need to conform to the snow. That, and you lose ground clearance when you deflate and the problem in snow is that you get stuck when you high center or start pushing too much of it.

  • I'm running RCV's up front, this was simply a fit test for the front that became a popular KZhead video. For those that wanted to see them on all four, I did that and provided a link at the beginning of the video. It's on rougher terrain as well.

  • I'm not sure what a Flatlanders Jeep is. I built it myself from the ground up. I hadn't cut the pinch seam yet, so the chains in the rear wouldn't fit. The linked video in the beginning shows all four chains being used, aired down, and out rougher terrain.

  • Ok you win, you didnt mention that in previous posts. Just wondering what mods weigh 1/2 ton that you can put on a Jeep.
