  • I'll update this pinned comment with any new info, corrections, etc.! UPDATE 2/2/24: Apparently Palworld server costs are currently $475,000 PER MONTH. Pocketpair's (only) networking engineer was told to "never let the service go down no matter what ... without regard to cost." This company is insane... twitter.com/WDBTHtGP/status/1753467000683131223 Correction(s): - Ark does let you customize the EXP modifier and some game rules! But I do love the sheer range of settings Palworld offers (day/night duration, whether you drop items on death, etc.), and I think Palworld's design overall does respect your time as far as this type of survival game goes.

    • This stupid little game is addicting I have it on my Series x and I bought it on steam to play it on my that's where it's getting the majority of it runs surprisingly very well on the legion go very addicting little device the moment I unlocked the ability to give lip monk the little squirrel whatever. His name is a machine gun to sit on my head and shoot people that came to attack my base. It was game over and then I unlocked the assault rifle. Oh man, you know what I'm surprised at the map is actually pretty big. I wasn't expecting it to be this big. There's a lot of areas to explore. There's a lot of things to collect. I am truly truly addicted to this little game. It's literally the only thing I play on my legion if it wasn't for the fact that it has to be online I would be playing it a lot more if it was offline because I take my legion go with me everywhere. I have a bag for it. I get to work early. I play on my legion go outside until the I open the store. I take a lunch break which is roughly about an hour and a half. I play on my legion go. I use my legion goal more than any other device. It is my greatest gaming investment that I've made in a long time. Super happy. I even went out and bought 100 watt charger for the house for the car which is a cigarette lighter. So I'm playing while I'm gaming in the car and I'm charging it. I have a I have a massive 3000 watt battery pack with 65 w charging fast charging so I can be able to play while it charges if ever. I'm going to area where I can't charge it while I play. Truly addicting. I have so many games on there

      @WhyDo@WhyDo3 ай бұрын
    • @@WhyDo we've always had imitators as the staple of video game iteration. We call those who follow in the footsteps of the greats "clones" (remember all the "doom clones"?) and we even call genres by the names of the games they imitate (like the classic Metroidvanias, or Rogue-likes). I think people are losing their minds over exactly nothing of substance; if you take something from someone else and you take your time to digest it, to iterate on it, to give your own spin on it, then it becomes yours, and I see Palworld has done exactly that; they have not iterated over the surface appearance of what they copied from (much), but they have trodden genuinely new ground in the gameplay department: this is the first monster tamer where your monsters are a meaningful part of the base building, where they provide automation. You can't find that ANYWHERE else today, and that's huge, on top of all the other things that they have done well. I think Palworld could easily spawn a fair numbers of imitators in turn, a new generation of monster tamers where the monsters do more than just one thing, where they become a meaningful component of other game loops instead of being a self-contained ecosystem.

    • "Making the most of what they have" seems to be the motto of Palworld! I couldn't fit it in the video for time, but there was a Pocketpair post a couple years back seeking engineers to hire, and I found it very interesting: twitter.com/PocketpairJapan/status/1317109810811203585 "12. Always goes above and beyond the job category. Engineers often decide on plans and specifications. 13. There is no concept of seniors and juniors. 14. There is no concept of hierarchy." If all that's true, it's an environment where it's very easy to allow implementation to influence design, rather than just the other way around, and everyone can have a say in decisions. I suspect that this is what let them do the "dev tool -> front facing feature" trick that you just described!

Definitely hoping Palworld goes decently hard on replacing the cardboard cutouts with people/an actual plot, which the intro SEEMS to hint towards... there's just jack shit for now outside of the Journal entries and Paldeck entries (alongside map STILL not being complete, despite how massive it is) :V Now the important question: What's your favorite Pal? 🔫 This is not a request, choose wisely.

  • 2:28 "the animation of the pals [carry] more than everything else" it's true! one of the core concepts of the game, acc to the lead dev/director, was "automation with emotion" -- not just having a base with generic worker grunts, but having workers that emote and express themselves thru animations. thats part of why development took so long: ~20 animations per pal, x 130 pals, is a lot of animation to make! especially for a team that self-professed to "not knowing what a rig was" at first!

  • Palworld executed on what we've all known for years. Modern games are predatory by design, selling you half-complete thoughts and charging you again and again for the next piece of the puzzle. Or they'll sell you loot boxes until you're blue in the face just so you can try to "keep pace" with the whales in pay-to-win fashion. Or they'll simply release games in a broken state because the devs are overworked and underpaid with not enough time to execute properly. Palworld isn't trying to push the needle. It's not trying to put money before the gameplay experience. It's giving us the kind of experience like early Blizzard games gave us: a love letter from devs who love games and aspire to make something enjoyable at an accessible price. I freaking LOVE that these devs did so much with so little in terms of expeprience and budget. This game gives me hope for small studios and people like me who have all but completely stopped gaming so I can make enjoyable games instead. I want my kid to enjoy gaming the way I did as a kid: pure joy with reckless abandon, never worrying when I have to fork out another $10, $20, $50 just to continue playing, and never having to feel guarded about the studio trying to rip me off around every corner.

    • There's also the breeding mechanics, that are surprisingly in depth. The best way I can describe how it works, is the selective breeding humanity has done for centuries or even within decades to get various animal and plant species to best produce or look good etc. Except in Palworld, it's trying to get god traits on ones you'll put into a base or bring with you on adventures, while also trying to ensure that breeding weights are correct, so you could get the best Quivern you can possibly get as an example.

They didn't "take it," they might have riffed on it. Very briefly. Fromsoft has been using religious iconography for several games, and there's churches all over the Lands Between related to some of the very central lore elements. There's too many differences to say they're even similar unless you really really squint. If anything, it felt more Dark Souls 3 than BotW.

    • @@ihateanimebutonlywhenitiso7227 Dude, looking for exact reduplication being a silly way of drawing these links is actually what I'm talking about. By your logic, BotW lifted from Dark Souls by having you start in a Shrine of Resurrection with trash gear, which is functionally how every Dark Souls game starts. Tropes and Ripoffs are different. And I misinterpreted you in my first comment. I was thinking the actual start of Elden Ring, the Chapel of Anticipation, which is a little linear "bridge" from DS3 to ER. You meant at Varre. I'd call that a homage at best. The wandering strong early boss has been getting done for ages and the sight-lines to the church are very different. I remember FFXII doing that in 2006 and it was already a trope. That's just basic game design for PvE. Honestly that bit isn't one of the many things I'd take issue with Palworld for. But I won't fight on this, Palworld's not worth the fucking effort. Palworld sucks and I'm in the minority, whatever, maybe people will come around and maybe they won't, with a lot of that depending on Pocket Pair. I also think Brandon Sanderson's books suck, so I'm used to being the minority critical nerd.

Yes its a different hodgepodge of various mechanics, but what game isnt that anymore. Also they cannot say "its just like pokemon" because of 1 or 2 similarities. -they have to go through and hard prove asset theft or straight up plaigerisim. And for the most important point: -Theres also the matter of public opinion. The fact it sold 4 million copies within the first couple days is a blessing for palworld, and also the fact that it runs 1 million concurrent players everyday. If pokemon sues and gets palworld shut down, thats gonna be a very bad pr stunt because theyve just blocked millions of people playing a game they enjoy playing. This coupled with the fact that it raised the standard for this genre of gaming, and if pokemon does sue, it feels like they are trying to remove competition, punishing a rogue company for "raising the bar for standards," and limiting what players should enjoy.

  • The best way I could describe this game from what I’ve seen, is that is it the culmination of the philosophy of Asset flips + why copyright expires. The difference between this game and others with no originality, is that the devs actually know why all the things they stole work, instead of being lazy. This game has probably NO originality in anything it has, but for some reason, the devs are super competent in understanding good game design.

  • Funny thing about going through walls: if you exit a flying mount too close to the ceiling you get stuck out of bounds It can be annoying sometimes, BUT you can use this trick to go after a boss that got ejected inside the rocks for some reason and murder it there To get out just get close to a wall and trigger your mount animation again, your Pal will pull you out(if you didnt recall it after getting stuck)

  • Every single game that has ever existed has “stolen” something from its predecessors. There isn’t anything that is truly original anymore. Edit: even Tennis for Two, the first video game ever, stole the concept of the game from table tennis. 😂
