How I Plant Tomatoes, Potatoes, and More & 2 Week Update!
With a weeklong (much need) vacation on the horizon I had to plant my tomatoes before they became overgrown! So lets plant tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, squash, and whatever else we can find before I had to rush out. At the end of the video I give you guys a real two week update on how everything is doing after planting!

"people tell me you can't do this...I'm literally doing it right now" 🤣🤣 Made me laugh!
I'll get the comments IN the video where I am showing myself doing things!
gave me a laugh too 😂
I love your new logo and appreciate all you do for us GARDENERS. I am a 3rd generation gardener and I am so grateful you are starting the conversation bridging the generational gap.
Very happy to hear this! Gardening has long been a major part of my families lives and I am thankful to have one today!
I love the way you said the tomatoes will "just have to deal with it because that's what there going to get". You raise tomatoes like I raised my kids! They turned out great and I'm sure the tomatoes will too!
Makes sense. I care for my tomato plants if as they were my kids 😂 Feels so weird cutting them down at the end of the season 😅
Haha, my many tomato babies are always in feast or famine mode around me.
😂
Love the two week update! More updates please. Learning how to deal with problems like that is super helpful. Love the chili flakes idea, and the dollar tree trash can cloches.
Glad you also show your fails as well as you wins. I hope your garden grows really well through the rest of the season
Trying to keep it real, nobody has a perfect garden!
Meanwhile the rest of us waiting for the last frost….love you Jacques :)
Brutal having to wait so long!
“The tomatoes won’t like it as much but they’ll have to deal with it because that’s what they’re gonna get.” 😂 I love that you’re a no-nonsense plant parent!
I like the update included in the video. I actually learn a lot from your video since I'm pretty new at gardening. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I will try to do more like this!
My grow bags and worms get here tomorrow, they are the last things I need before I can start repotting everything and building my garden up. Wish me luck. I've been watching you and Eric(Kevin) for like a month straight at this point. I have not been this happy in a long time.
Also making my own mulch from my yard. Anything that won't go in the compost tower gets laid out to dry up.
Love to hear this and love the diy mulch! Anything dead and dry is mulch 👏
I was obsessing over my basil plant’s scent all weekend and neither of my parents could really even smell it! I must have been adopted 🤷🏼♀️ that’s the only conclusion I can draw.
😂 or they haven't regained their senses after COVID
Hahaha, I had the same experience with some orange blossoms on my tree. I was like how do you not smell it?!
Oh no! Orange blossoms smell so good! They are missing out.
@@jacquesinthegardenthe orange blossoms are to die for! They smell incredible! ❤
Or they smoked or were raised around smokers?
Man I thought spring was here in MI, it’s been super warm the last couple months and I’ve already put a lot of plants outside but now we’re getting a hard freeze for like 8 hrs tonight 🤦♂️. I really do think that weird unpredictable weather makes you appreciate the nice days more though
So wild to see that people get frost all the way up until June! Good luck and I wish you a frost free rest of the season 🤞
Cover your plants Nik! I’m in Ontario.
@@jacquesinthegarden I did thanks guys, they all made it through pretty well! Good luck to both of you
Love the updates. Excited for the season and the growth in your garden! 2 week update is much appreciated as well.
I cannot wait until our new acreage looks as amazing as your garden! Even at home here, we are super stoked to multi-sew in our raised beds. Been binging you and Kevin when I get a chance and a few others. A two-week update sounds excellent!
Every year the garden gets a little better! You will get there!
@@jacquesinthegardenit's a guarantee!
Love the updates! So often you see the initial planting then nothing til harvest.
Yes. Yes.. love to see the progress on what you are doing. Fails n success 😊 let’s see the aftermaths
when that grub started digging back down I was yelling at my screen for you to get it! XD PS my garden in Spring Valley is getting hit HARD by raccoons right now too :/
I planted out a 20x20ft In ground bed full of potatoes, my first ever attempt at growing them. They’ve been in for afew months now and are starting to die off. So so excited for them to finish up and get to digging. Awesome videos brother, I enjoy every single one. God Bless 🙏🏼
Really helpful tips! My zinnias got super tall and took over my raised bed. I’ll be pinching them back - as well as my basil - from here on out. I also love seeing the follow up. It’s so devastating to see your hard work destroyed. I would be beside myself!
Its the name of the game for sure, just thankful I am not relying on my garden to survive!
I like the 15 day update! Thank you!
Its my first year gardening, but ive been watching gardening videos for a few years now. I didnt have someone in my life to teach me, so im thankful to get to learn from you as one of my favorite gardeners here on youtube. Its great to finally be able to get out there and actually do it, so therapeutic but also so stressful starting out! I feel a little behind. But i know next year i wont be trying to fill all my beds and figure out my seasons here anymore. Thank you for all that you do, gardening is something i really needed in my life. and youre an amazing inspiration. Wishing you great harvests
I love that you interplant so many things together! I'm always mixing random stuff in my containers/beds just bc I can hahaha
Wherever space shows up is where I plant, so I end up with these weird blends haha.
You have racoons I have opossum. Going to try your chili flakes idea probably will work with the squirrels as well.
I am thinking that nobody likes a nose full of chili flakes!
@@jacquesinthegarden I have tried Chile pepper flakes for rats (actually making a pepper spray extract) and they don't seem to care
I read -you have raccoons I have optimism.😅😊
@@4D2M0T🎵 High hopes! We've got hiiiigh hopes 🎶 😂
I have all of those but the deer are probably my worst offenders on my garden and orchard.
Thank you for the follow up right away. ❤
I love follow-ups. I hate being left on a cliffhanger. Appreciate the update
So jealous of your garden! Absolutely beautiful. It’s 75 here in Atlanta right now. Always enjoy your videos and knowledge
Hopefully all chances of frost have at least passed for you!
I've noticed that the bugs tend to stay away when I sprinkle Neem Cake fertilizer around the top of my plants. I'm not surprised others have noticed this benefit. Thank you for highlighting this, Jacques!
Here for the raccoon deterrent advice. They are my biggest challenge, and I feel less alone. Running out to stock up on crushed dried chiles now!
Me too! My neighbour had pest removal folks out for a consultation on 🦝🦝🦝 and they just shook their heads. We have old trellis panels over beds we've seeded, but once the seeds are up, I'm going to try chili flakes! Off to the international foods aisle!
It's working for me!
And those little dollar tree mesh trash can cloches!
I was watching this video with one of my cats and your voice was so soothing it lulled her to sleep.
Love and appreciate the after transplant update
Thanks for showing the stuff that had issues. Looks more like what happens in my garden half the time, glad to see it happens to everyone 😂
YES!!!! LOVE the follow up idea ... please do more of this. REALLY helpful! Thank you!
Kudos to Wood Prairie Farms, the only US source I could find last year for Sarpo Mira potatoes. Excellent blight resistance! And they are still in stock this year. 💚
Great seed potatoes and I love their selection.
As a Canadian, I am seeeeething with jealousy over your spring garden! It's still snowing here.
Yes! Would love to see again. I’m in awe of the transformation of your garden. Hope the chili flakes work!
Love the two week updates. Keep doing them.
I need to learn more about nematodes! Great looking garden! Yes, I love it when gardeners give update videos in the same original planting video. It helps. Thanks for all the knowledge because I am a 3rd year discouraged gardener who struggles in the Texas heat. All my tomatoes had hundreds of blossoms only to lose them by our baking sun! Literally thriving one Sat and crisp and fried the next Sat! They are using chem trails and direct energy to FRY our gardens, so Im afraid this year will be no different, but Im not giving up!
Love the update on how things grew
Hello Jacques. Love the updates. In my zone 5 garden in Canada, the best tasting pink tomato I ever grew is Dester. Not the most prolific or reliable, but the taste is worth the trouble. I am growing it every year now. Jacques, you are my favorite gardener on KZhead.😊
I’ve been pinching basil all summer and have had the longest access to fresh basil because of it and the plants are more beautiful ❤ I love your videos and your melodic tone 😊
Love the update and using chilly flakes is a good idea!
Any follow ups are welcome. I love seeing your garden and all the information you give. Awesome video!!
Updates are very helpful. I love sseing the final vids too. We get invested in your garden 😊
Another great video! Ive subscribed finally and never miss a video. Tell you what the rest of the gardening youtubers need to watch out because your videos are so good and informative! Thanks
Thanks for another great video, Jacques! It’s autumn here in Australia right now, but still great info to know for when spring/summer rolls around. ☺️🌻
Hi Jacques, would definitely watch another update. Thing is, if you would post a video on a daily basis I would still watch them all. Thank you for the great content and keeping it real. Appreciate it, been a fan since your debut so am always looking for hermit tips and tricks, man. 😊
Oooooh definitely gonna try topping my zinnias this year! I had zinnias in a 5gal grow bag last year and they still ended up taller than me 😂
It's a greedy way to keep them low and get more flowers
Try getting some box traps for the raccoons. Don’t worry they are live traps. Then re-home the raccoons far far away.
There will always be more raccoons and others to take their place.
As far as I know In CA it is illegal, the good news is that the chili flakes have entirely worked
I really love the update. Plus it shows up that you have issues and plants that fail too
❤ the logo… very appropriate for You! Appreciate your videos! 🎉
Jacques, the spring garden is looking great brother!!!! Keep it up!
Much appreciated!
I am so glad to see the updates! I love that.
Yes ! Definitely would love to see more videos like this! Thanks for sharing Jacques 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Those darn dumpster pandas grrr!
They are annoyingly innocent looking too
Yes, again please! 😊
Love the updates and would love to see more. Thanks for all you do.❤❤❤❤
I'm in Los Angeles and the weather has been so funky. I feel like I'm so behind. My tomato seedlings are still small. Hopefully I can catch up. Slugs ate so many of the seedlings I put in the garden. I used pine shavings and the slugs have left the seedlings alone. I hope my garden will soon take off. Thanks for the inspiration!
Good to hear about the pine shavings making a difference here. The weather has been weird, hopefully we get a real summer this year, last year it basically never happened.
@@jacquesinthegarden 🤞
It's still too cold to plant tomatoes outside; but, I had to up-pot some of my tomatoes because they were getting too big for the pellets. I'm growing Cherokee Purple and San Marzano. It's the first time for both varieties. My pepper seedlings are doing pretty good so far. But, it's still too early for then to go outside, especially at night.
Yes please on the update style videos! Very helpful
Thank you for today’s video!! Your garden is 😍🤩👏. I just know the BEES are so happy there!! 🐝
Hi Jacques 👋 great video as always! Thanks for the info about zinnias, I didn't know you could top them too. Happy growing 💚
Nice, I love the two week up date.
I like the 2 week update. I always like to see the issues that come up because it makes me worry less when they happen to me.
Please keep us updated on how well pepper flakes help with critters! My biggest frustration is racoons, rats and now snails & slugs. Thanks!
The chili flakes for sure worked on the racoons! They have not dug a single bed I covered in flakes!
Your garden looks so lush and beautiful! I can’t wait to do more spring plantings with the new cattle panel arches my husband just set up for me. It’s not a huge garden but hopefully, we can get more produce with our Greenstalks and raised beds 🥰🌷🌼🌻🌞🍅🥬🍆🌶️🥕🥒 I love your videos! Keep them coming 👌🏽
Any amount of home grown produce is an amazing bonus! Best of luck to your spring garden!
Loved the video. Thanks for the up date, I like updates.
Yay! I always look forward to a new Jacques in the garden video! Can’t help but be jealous that this is your spring garden though. It’s barely averaging 10-12°C (50° F) here in London, UK 🌱
Oof, such a quick season for you guys!
Keep up the great vibes…
Thank you for the two week update!! And this whole video was so helpful, even if some was just emotional support 😅
Enjoyed the updates and also your Logo 🙌🏻
Garden look very beautiful 👍
I'm so hopeful that the chili flakes will help you keep your plants alive! Glad to hear that you were able to rescue some plants.
I love your videos. Very informative and I like that you experiment. I don’t have enough space to grow and experiment, so I live vicariously through you. So keep the progress videos coming. Another type of deterrent for damaging animals is cinnamon powder. One good sniff and a nose full of burning sensation. That’s how I keep raccoons, rats, etc out of fruit trees and off my garden beds.
You could make that block wall look great with some stucco. I'd watch another garden update.
I feel like I have thrown caution to the wind with my potato plantings this year. Great gardens. My warm plants cannot be put out for another month or more. I have started poppies in a tray this year too. With Nasturtiums and Sweet Williams, Pansies, Calendula, Lupins and Penny Black.
Love using Mykos, I’ve been using it for a couple years now and use it for both my vegetable garden and my cacti/succulent collection and plants love it.
Jacques, More updates, please--thank you. 😊
Love the update in the same video!
Thanks for the video! Love seeing the follow-up. I’m going to give the chilly flakes a try, something keeps eating my cucumber seedlings.
Nice work ❤❤🎉
I have only ever planted potatoes in the epic grow bags. I live in the inland empire where it gets hot, and even then I had 4 pounds of potatoes per bag despite my newbie mistakes. Over the winter, I tried to plant in my raised bed but they never came up (it was too cold) but my potatoes in the grow bags produced 6 lbs, even though I had to harvest early due to leaf spot fungus). You can keep the soil nice and warm in the winter by placing in full sun and rolling down the bags.
After not producing at all last season my eggplant has finally set its first fruit about a week ago 😅 its the black beauty variety i dont really care for eggplant but i grew it for my mom and I'm glad shes finally gonna be able to try eggplant fresh from the garden 👍
I've been using that Mykos for years and it is amazing stuff. Hope it works out great for you as well! 🍅
I had a bad grub season here in Florida a few months back. Racoons got to come dig exac twice. As soon as I noticed the holes we watched the cameras and found where they were hopping the fence. I got to work making my hot spray. It seems to work in most mammals. I put in a mason jar hot water, cinnamon, any kind of hot peppers or flakes, ginger powder, black pepper,, Indian chili powder.... Basically anything that burns skin or burn your nose if you breathe it. I put 1/3 of the jar vinegar. Shaking whenever you can think of it and let set at least a day but longer is better. I poured/sprayed that where I knew they were coming in and all around my beds and anyplace I could think they would be. They came the next night and got almost to the fence, stopped and turned around. No more holes to be found. They really didn't like it. My dogs and cats avoided those areas too.
I enjoyed the update provided! : )
If you haven't grown the Sarpo Miras before, and you get the same results that we had last year you should be more than happy with the results. We planted 1lb, 12 little potatoes last year and harvested 45+lbs at seasons end. So, on that note, I need a promise that you'll at least film you harvesting them. They are considered as a main crop or late variety. Meaning maturity is 110-120 days. And when they reach maturity it's recommended to stop watering them for a couple weeks before digging them up. Best of luck! Oh, and thank you for your purchase, infusion of cash into the economy of Northern Maine. 😄👍😄
Try putting your mykos in an old seasoning shaker. It works great
That makes a lot of sense!
Ohh, gonna definitely start pinching my flowers. I don't know why people don't mention it. Such a good trick. I have to restart all my seedlings again. Beetles got to mine :c
I have had great results with that Mycos powder. I sprinkle it on the roots before I put the plants in the ground/hole or uppot. James Prigioni in NJ, who has a gardening channel, uses it with good results.
Seems to be the real deal!
I've been filming myself gardening this season so far! I'm in zone 7, so it's very different, but I've just planted my potatoes, too. I have squirrels that have been digging around my pots, I think I'll try the pepper flakes trick on them.
I like the 15 day update
Loved this video.
I overwintered my Black Beauty eggplant from Baker Creek. I have 12 eggplants as big as baseballs right now. The plant is really happy in my front yard 3ft raised bed. I’m in Orange County.
That is amazing, I didn't overwinter any this year but I sure wish I had!
I back fill my grow bags. It works fine. I don't have patience to constantly hill and I don't want to worry about green potatoes
Makes sense to me!
My Silver beet, Bok choi, tomatoes and dahlias have new growth that is crinkled, thick and rubbery Any ideas on what is wrong? More garden updates too, please. Hope you enjoyed your vacation 😊
Beautiful Garden! Us new gardeners are always wondering if, "This is what it's suppose to look like?" So it's wonderful getting updates, thanks. As a matter of fact I was just wondering if the new leaves on the very top of my Sweet Chocolate Tomato was okay, because the green on top is slightly lighter than the rest of the plant. Then I saw your tomatoes (23:33 time line) and I instantly felt better because yours looked that way too 💚😄. Thanks Jaq!
Very happy to hear this was helpful!
Love your videos Jacques!
Love a follow up video!
Thank you
The garden is looking great, despite the raccoon problem. Maybe getting a big garden dog to act as a security gard would help scare off the raccoons.
I always love your videos!
Thank you so much!
