  • Pálinka that is less than 50%alcohol is not serious stuff, it's made for tourists I guess! Unikum is basically Jagermeister for grownups. It tastes like medicine because it originally is. It is an herb liqueur. Most Hungarians keep some at home in case of upset stomach. It does really cure it. The way it became a popular drink is, it could be taken to places where alcohol was forbidden, because it's "medicine"

    • It is usually topped with trappist cheese. This cheese is almost unknown outside Hungary. It tastes most like gouda. It is a semi-hard cheese, matured, with fermentation holes. It is made from cow's milk, with lactic acid bacteria culture, rennet and the addition of calcium chloride, potassium or sodium nitrate. Fatty trappistas must have a dry matter content of at least 56 %. True French Trappist is raw milk, i.e. the milk is not pasteurised and is matured for two months. Normally, the cut surface of the cheese, which weighs about one and a half kilograms and is in the shape of a disc, has holes of 3-4 millimetres evenly distributed over the cut surface. It has a sour, slightly salty taste and smell.

  • Actually your pronounciation is pretty good considering you only just arrived :) Let me share some additional info on the stuff you guys tried, maybe it will be helpful to some people: 1. Gerbeaud is an iconic place. Imagine it as the place where stereotypically the old, elite ladies went to hang out to enjoy some fine things in life - and I don't just mean cookies. There is a long time urban legend that in those times if you were a handsome young man, and bought a certain cake, only ate a certain part of it, and left the fork on the plate in a certain way (there are several versions of the story), then eventually one of the waiters reached you with an address, where you had to went to... well.... offer some company to one of those old, and rich ladies on a financial term, if you get my meaning. But nowadays it is "just" one of the classiest place for deserts with a tradition they are proud of. You can be sure it will be really good quality stuff, but it will cost you too (expect ~ 2-3 times the price what you'd pay in more average place) - still, if you can afford, I'd recommend to try and get that aristocratic feeling of the good quality desserts in a really classy place where the elite of Budapest enjoyed them in an environment fitting to their standards by that time. Dobos cake is for some reason often recommended - personally I never liked that hard caramel topping, and always went for Krémes as a child, but maybe it is rather a question of personal preference. Somlói Galuska however is something I can recommend to anyone, great choice in my oppinion! 2. That's a cool place too! Strudels ("Rétes" in hungarian) is quite traditional, and there are many options for the filling. It was a good idea to give a chance to poppy seed filling, not that common in other places where you can find strudels, but maybe I am wrong on that. But for sure: don't worry about poppy seed is used for making drugs. The reason for is that if you want to make drugs from it, you will need them in their earlier stage, when it is less ripe. What is used for cooking is harvested later, and dried - you can't get high on it, no matter how hard you try. And YES, vanilla ice cream is a perfect addition to it, my mom often serves the two things along as well. :) 3. Retró Lángos is a nice place for trying lángos - they have many varieties, and don't go easy on toppings either. Most people eat it without cutleries, by hand. Be prepared to have a messy face after, and oily hands what will need washing too, some wet napkins can come quite handy after that. Also, it is super filling, quite heavy food. Sharing one between the two of you was also a good idea if you plan to eat some more in the near future. 4. Never tried the place, but looks good. Kürtőskalács is best if you get it very fresh, while it is still hot or warm. It can get dried quickly though, which will degrade its quality (the soft inside will be less tasty), so try not to get those which where made several hours ago. 5. On pálinka: unfortunately hard to find really good ones. Most of the "bottled" versions (what you can usually buy in bars and shops) are not as tasty as the home made ones (which can be also terrible ones, depending on who makes it with what quality of ingredients), and the home made ones are usually even harder drinks (~50% of alcohol), so prepare they will hit hard. I can recommend "Árpád" brand though, I think they make a steadily good quality stuff. Goulash and Csirke Paprikás: both are great choices! You can't get any more traditional as those ones, and they are both tasty. Goulash ("Gulyás") is a must-have. Although you can find dishes with the same name in neighbouring countries, it is usually a stew there, but originally it is a soup! The name comes from the old word for "cow" ("gulya"), the cow shepherd was called "Gulyás", and the name implies it is the soup they made typically. On Unicum: well.... I have seen those faces after tasting it many times. :D Honestly, most of the people won't like it. I have met only a handful people from foreign countries who do. I'd still give it a try if you are a man who likes to experiment, and likes these weird, bitter tasting herby stuffs. But in my experience I have never met a girl before from a foreign country who liked it. If you are girl and you do for some reason, be prepared it will get you attention and respect from many man in Hungary. :D Great video, anyway! Cheers from a hungarian living in Budapest.
