I'm a guy, almost 50, and this movie gets me every time I watch it. It's such a joyful, painful, sad, happy, mysterious, love and love filled, movie, it's impossible not to be moved by it.
This movie doesn’t get nearly the credit it deserves. It’s truly a thought provoking movie with great themes and well acted. The score to this movie is so good too.
There's a reason Hollywood wants to ignore this movie. I'll give you a hint: the directors next film was Gigli... And he never got a job again. That piece of shit movie was such an embarrassment it retroactively erased all the products of the director. In the twenty years since then you need to create something like God's of Egypt or Book of Henry level bad to get persona non grata treatment by Hollywood. I'd be surprised if someone has the VHS of this movie.

Apparently you all don't know about the reviews of this movie at the time. They butchered it. One of the worst reviewed movies that year. It was waaaayyy too long and the plot was a mess. It was 3 hours long and felt 3 hours long. The acting was phenomenal but once you get past that, it just isn't a good movie. Even Brad Pitt says he shouldn't have done the movie

It is a tragedy that this movie didn’t receive not one Oscar nomination. How??!! It’s in my Top 5 movies of all time. Anthony Hopkins & Brad Pitt were amazing in this movie. It’s a 10/10 for me.
People really don’t appreciate Death , it comes when it’s time and blame Death for it. Same with this movie, not many people understand it and love it.

Agreed. The film deserved more respect. I love how it shows that approaching death changes behavior -- death at his side, he started to make unexpected choices, to think of legacy, to worry about his children and those he leaves behind, and so on. A fantastic film.
That last scene when she looks into his eyes for a while there was incredible. I got scare for a bit. What a performance.
When my father was dying from cancer I would go to the theater twice a week to sit in the dark while watching this movie and cry. It was comforting to me

@@ct6852 Yeah the 90s rocked. The movies, the music, the economy, etc. It's pretty much when society peaked. It slowly started to decrease after 9/11, then it started to quickly plummet the last 10 or so years with the inception of smartphones and social media.

Fix the only person on the planet whose actions you can truly control -- yourself. Treat people right, and trust they will treat you right, with their only input from you being your example. Moral of the story…. No reason to fear Death. I love Pitt’s portrayal of Death experiencing Life as a human.

Actually I think the moral of the story is letting someone go that you care about because you know deep down it's better for them
My Dad is 69, and is recovering from heart valve replacement. He ended up with some lung complications and on a ventilator, and a couple weeks ago he was in so much pain, he wanted to be let go. The day we all came to say goodbye and pull him off life support, he literally changed his mind in the 11th hour. When he saw how many people visited and loved him, he decided to fight, he wasn't ready to go yet, and since then he is off the ventilator and recovering, slowly, but he is still with us. A movie like this that I haven't seen in over 20 years is exactly what I needed right now. Thank you ladies!

The first version of this story was made way back in 1934 called "Death Takes A Holiday" which, while overacted and kind of hokey, is the version I prefer. What I remember most vividly from that first version is how similar it was to your comment about your Dad. It stressed that Death (Joe) took this time on earth to better understand why he was so feared and why humans clung so desperately to life. In this version, the scene with the elderly Jamaican lady brought me to tears. The look of joy on her face when Death gave her that brief glimpse of what was to come - gave me goosebumps. It was filmed one more time as a made for TV movie in the early seventies. I guess it's a subject that will always be relevant! Hope your Dad is much improved and will share many more years with his loving family.
Any life after retirement or a near-death experience is a bonus round.

I love the way Brad Pitt manages to convey so much in just his eyes and the attitude of his head. Joe Black has a certain childlike innocence about so many things that he has never experienced before, in spite of the fact that he has existed for so long. His compassion towards the old lady is incredibly moving and shows a quality to him that is unexpected, given who he is. The acting (of all the cast) is superb. I think this movie is one of the most incredible movies ever made.
The movie kind of coldly demonstrated the difference between an amazing actor (Hopkins) and a "pretty boy" famous guy acting. Brad sadly was about 4th in the list ranked by talent in the movie. I found it horribly sad that Claire Forlani wasn't hailed as the best in the movie. Hopkins had some moments where his "affect" missed the tone, and Pitt is so wooden, but she literally gave the performance of a career.

As a Father this film is heartbreaking. Dying is easy, but knowing my daughter won't have a dad scares the hell out of me!
That's exactly how a father should feel and knowing I'll never be able to feel that way is the greatest disappointment I have in not having been able to have children.

Yes. The greatest joy in my life was when my daughter was born and all the wonderful time that I have spent with her. She has just had her own baby recently and she is going to be a great Mom to her son. She is by far the greatist person in my life. I miss her as we live far from each other but she is always in my heart.

I remember seeing this in theaters way back when, and literally crying at Anthony Hopkins acting. The chemistry between all the main characters was absolute magic. Hopkins, Forlani, and Pitt's performances were some of the best I've ever seen. Hopkins' speech to his daughter on the helicopter was just one of the highest forms of art, as is his standing up to Joe, when he said he was going to take Susan. He literally had no bargaining point with Joe, but managed to turn it around.
I cannot imagine the privilege of having been able to see this in theaters! It's a long-time favorite of mine but, alas, I am not old enough to have been able to see it when it actually featured! :O To be in that audience...
William Mullins- I feel exactly the same way! Anthony Hopkins was spot on - just a wonder!His easy and loving relationship with Susan was SO natural, it brought tears to my eyes many times! But also beautiful was his loving but different relationship with daughter Allison … Allison’s relationship with her husband Quince… Quince’s loving and loyal relationship with the family… each of the actors were just stellar. (- shout out to the writers of this amazing script, too!!) Even spot on was Drew - smart, cold, self-centered, overly- ambitious young up-and-comer wonder boy Drew! What an achievement on all these levels!!

This movie is my guilty pleasure. Every time I come across it, I will watch it. Great acting, unique story that hit ya in the feels. I cry each time I watch.

I swear when Sir Anthony Hopkins gets mad or raises his voice its like he's speaking to your soul. Such a brilliant performance. But even at his relatively young age Brad Pitt was amazing against him as well. Glad that you checked this one out its so good.
I'm going to be very very said when Hopkins is gone. He's the best.

"Never mind about favorites... the point is you were always mine." This is the main thing I took away from Meet Joe Black. To love without pettiness or jealousy. To understand that you don't have to be someone's priority to still be loved, and for them to still be your priority. So few people truly possess this degree of emotional maturity.

Both came out in 1998 as well so I bet audiences back then got them confused unless they weren’t in theaters at the same time. EDIT I looked into it. They were released in November and December respectively so they probably were in theaters at the same time at some point.
If you swap out Mighty Joe Young for the amazing film "Joe Versus The Volcano" with Hanks & Ryan, you'd have a great datenight double bill.
I’m a 65 year old Brit and single. I’ve never found love and fancied watching this again tonight. I was looking on here and came across this channel. You are both beautiful and if I were young, I couldn’t pick between you. This film is one of the greats. It’s got a growing cult following. I found it like a rollercoaster. Up and down, emotions all over the place. A truly brilliant piece of work that didn’t get the credit it deserved. Have a good life ladies. X
The joy of being 65 is that you are past having to choose, pick both of them!! Did you ever come across the original film, "Death Takes A Holiday?" Apparently most of the world has forgotten that one inspired (was copied) this one. It adds the incredible context setting of death, being "away", leads to nobody on the whole planet dying for a time.
Ugh. The first time I saw this movie was after my dad died. It almost killed me to watch it but somehow Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt managed to gentle the grief of his passing. Extraordinarily creative and beautifully acted. Truly, a movie that made a lasting impression on me. I’m so glad you enjoyed watching it as much as I did!

One of the best movies ever made. Acting, the score and unique story. Hopkins character was so inspiring. Tough, integrity, honor, loving, flawed and unafraid to tell death off to his face.
Anthony Hopkins yes, what a classy actor! Scary as heck when he played Hannibal Lecter but so endearing and admirable in his role here as William Parrish. I hope 'CassiePop' gets to see Hopkins play eccentric kiwi - Burt Munro in 'The World's Fastest Indian' (motorcycle). It's as far away from these two characters types. 👍🏻

I think she didn't realize he was a death. She realized there something more than cofee shop guy and that she knew nothing about him that's what made her scared. Not specifically death.

As someone who is often cynical, I love how uncynical you and your sister are about movies, always allowing yourselves to get swept up in them the way you were meant to. It is truly a delight to get to see movies I've loved for years through your eyes. And my cynical heart adores the decidedly uncynical, beautiful, and unabashedly sentimental Meet Joe Black. What a wonderful movie about love of life, integrity, and loving well and unselfishly.
The song/score for the final scene is called “That Next Place”. It’s about 10 minutes long. If you take the time to listen to it without distraction it takes you through every human emotion and the sun of the human experience all together. I have often said that if I could only listen to one song again for the rest of my life, That Next Place would be it.
Thomas Newman stuff is seriously beautiful. I like Whisper of a Thrill the best I think. I think I prefer the music being apart from the movie.

I spent many hours in theatres watching both those great films. Your wife had excellent taste. I absolutely loved the atmosphere, the luxurious settings of both films, giving such an aspirational tone to touch our inner desires, and then adding such a basic struggle as love and loss and love triumphant. Such wonderful emotional journeys in each film. Watch them bravely and remember the love that is still with you.
Yessss….I’ve seen An American President so many times and I still find it inspiring. It would be an excellent reaction movie!

Meet Joe Black is a very underrated movie that sets a vibe. If you watch it at night in the dark and just immerse yourself in it, you'll get what I'm saying. Thomas Newman's moving score on top of the great performances from the whole cast made this a often overlooked gem. Also, the scene with Brad Pitt and the old Jamaican woman is one of my favorite scenes in any film. She understood life and death more than Death itself.

@@ct6852 I don't know about that, but "A Hint of a Thrill" makes me tear up. It somehow taps into my regrets. Define nostalgia and this movie conjures those feelings like few others. I have by no means lived a life like Anthony Hopkins in this movie, yet in my heart my intentions were pure. Little consolation. I've been an asshole at times. I'm worried about when Brad Pitt comes. It's gonna be a somber experience.
I did this a few days ago. First time I watched the movie. Couldnt sleep afterwards and pretty much had a midlife crisis while laying in bed. Beautiful movie!

Not original at all. There was a version of "Death Takes a Holiday" in about 1934 and a TV-movie version with the same title in about 1971, but this is the best version.
Crazy twist in the story is death is basically using an evil billionaire tyrant before taking him to hell for eternity
I thought Pitt seemed far too self aware of his good looks in that scene, but I liked the way Claire Forlani played it. Classy and reserved but also slightly seductive. She made that scene despite Pitt's over the top "Brad Pittness".

The original story/movie was called "Death Takes A Holiday" and is a longtime classic. Death didn't take any lives while he was in the young man's body - taking a "Holiday" -- but in the end, "Death & Taxes." It comes for us all... loved your reactions to one of my a time favorite stories in any form. Death taking a Holiday to experience love and peanut butter... sigh*
In the original movie, she goes with him instead of the old man.

A truly miraculous performance by Claire Forlani! I particularly loved two aspects of the scene with Susan and Joe at Bill's party: 1) The contrast in the eyes - hers gradually being filled with absolute terror and his filled with calm compassion and ancient knowledge, and 2) How the name "Joe" is used throughout the movie as a protection device for the person saying it - Bill uses it ("This is Joe") to protect himself at the Board Meeting when Drew asks, "Who is the man standing to your left?"; Joe uses it ("I'm Joe") to protect himself when Susan asks, "So tell me Joe... How come a man as attractive, intelligent, well-spoken... diffident in the most seductive way, and yet... powerful... is all alone in this world?", and Susan uses it ("You're Joe") in the scene at the party to protect herself from needing to say out loud the horrifying truth of who Joe really is.

There was a time when I thought that Claire Forlani was literally the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen. From Mallrats to probably this, she was just mesmerizing.
Everyone was looking well dressed and classy and looking good in this one. Claire looking especially ideal in that dress.
This movie always makes me realize as much as I’m fine alone and don’t want anyone to hurt me ever again that my heart still wants to feel another one beating next to it. Her facial expressions and vocal tone were a perfect match to his quiet stillness. Oscar worthy acting by both of them.
That scene at around time stamp 36:13 or so and onward (Susan and "Joe" say goodbye) is some of the finest acting / dialogue of the movie. As they embrace, you can see Susan go through a whole range of thoughts, emotions, realizations, and conclusions all in a moment without saying a word. The moment she says "I feel like I (we're lifting off), she realizes everything at once on an emotional level without necessarily being able to (or wanting to) wrap her head around it intellectually, but accepting it all anyway because of the love in her heart. On some level, comprehends everything and is coming to terms with it all in a simple series of facial expressions and just the looks in her eye. This is why the very simple exchange after that embrace means so much. When Joe says "it doesn't matter WHAT I am, you know WHO I am",......he is telling her that no matter WHAT she sees on the outside, the man inside loves her no matter WHO that man is. When she replies that she knows who and what he is,.....aka simply "You're.....Joe", she is telling him that she loves HIM in return, no matter who or what he is. She simply loves.....Joe. It is some really powerful stuff. And that is also why this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Every single is a gem, and every actor is perfect in every scene. Every scene is a masterpiece.

I totally agree. It reminds me of beauty and the beast. Even though in the end, beauty did get the relationship with the prince, she actually was missing the beast and wishing he was there for her relationship.
Meet Joe Black is one of those movies that has a good story, good cast, good music, good script, and thats VERY rare to find in movies nowadays. You can watch it 100 times and it never gets old

One of my all time favourite films that I have 'introduced' and shared with a number of people. Never a dry eye left in the house. Anthony Hopkins is a remarkable actor; Brad Pitt shows a very different side and the supporting cast was really well selected. Whilst some are critical of it, the scene where Pitt speaks patwa with the old lady in the hospital, is just brilliant in my humble opinion. It sets out really well, the nature of 'death's' character and the how he operates.

For those too young to know, this is an updated version of "Death Takes a Holiday", an award winning Broadway play and later a movie.
I just love it when Cassie's expectations are subverted. First she thinks she's watching Mighty Joe Young, then a Chicflic, then not a Chicflic.
"Bicentennial Man" is another film that didn't get great reviews but is actually a good film that people like.

Theres something sort of comforting about Death taking a familiar interest in life. Learning to find the little things in life that make it worth living.
The original source movie "Death Takes A Holiday" added an interesting context that while Death was busy with this story, nobody in the whole world could die, and eventually that simple change became a major issue and added to the duty vs self interest angle this movie missed.
Films like this come along so rarely. Sublime acting combined with deep and rich story telling. Hollywood has lost its way and i fear its beyond redemption at this point. It sold its soul, and joe black wasnt the one collecting. My heartfelt wish is that writing like what we saw here can experience a Renaissance, and one day in the near future ill be able to leave the theater with a tear in my eye from an abundance of emotion, and not at having wasted another of the moments that this film has so eloquently extolled as precious.
It’s one of my favorite movies - it’s got so much depth and feeling. I just can’t handle the father/daughter relationships on top of the whole life/death complexities along with the plethora of other themes going on. OMG it’s a lot and I love it.
When his daughter asked hasn't he had enough of them yet and he sheepishly mumbles "mmmmm.... no." is my absolute favourite bit by his character :D
But it's the 'father/daughter' relationship which adds that much extra wonderful depth to this amazing film. "Fathers" in relation to their daughters are often difficult to understand and can be confusing - to the daughters.

Pit was amazing in this role and deserves the credit but holy shit what an stellar performance by Anthony Hopkins like always.
Carly said it best- "I don't know what genre this is." What's sad about watching this movie is that Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore unless it fits into a very specific easy to understand genre. Their business model has changed so completely in the past decade that no studio would take a chance on this script if it was offered to them in today's environment. But we do have this one to enjoy so that will have to do.
Sadly it is kind of like the movies Hollywood makes today. It is a remake/rethinking of a great movie called "Death Takes a Holiday" which I saw in the way back on B&W TV in the mid 70s. Take a great story, add a good actor and a famous pretty boy for ratings, and then add in a spectacularly gorgeous actress to carry the whole movie, make sure she gets naked, and then, do press about the amazing thing you "created." Claire Forlani acted a masterpiece, Hopkins was his excellent self, and Brad dropped his drawers to give the audience some palpatations. But, one of my favourite movies.
It was so hard to watch this during the scene right after the coffee shop, right before the death scene, knowing that massively traumatic end that Brad's character was going to have. I remember when I first saw this and it got to THAT scene . . . I felt as though I'd just been hit in the stomach by a canon ball. And how well Brad Pitt did making us believe in Joe/Death. This is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite movies. I've been a huge Anthony Hopkins fan since forever . . . and Brad Pitt really killed it (pun) in this one. Also . . . I literally laughed out louds when Cassie said she thought there was a gorilla in this movie. Loved this reaction! Great job, ladies!
Brad's character's death after the coffee shop scene hit harder than a jump scare in a horror film. I absolutely didn't expect it to happen, and I still remember the shock I had.
I thought the suddenness of the accident worked well for the overarching story. No one expected it. But shit happens in life.
You should have put the moment when she says "I would have liked you to meet my father" it is iconic
One of my favorite films-and I thought I was alone! All great performances but this was the first time I saw Claire Forlani and I was just mesmerized. Her nuanced facial expressions are so powerful and sexy at the same time. Next level acting by all!
Today I was thinking what is my favorite movie. I had forgotten about this one. I really loved it, especially the tenderness.
This was Martin Brest's masterpiece.He was a famous director who directed Going In Style, Scent of a Woman, Beverley Hills Cop, & Midnight Run. Sadly, he directed a movie called Gigli with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, and it ended up being one of the biggest box office bombs ever. It was the last movie he ever directed.

@@ct6852 It cost 75 million to make. It grossed 7 million at the box office. To put that into perspective, Battlefield Earth, the John Travolta disaster which had previously been called the biggest disaster ever? That had a 73 million budget and grossed 29.3 million at the box office.

Meet Joe Black is one of my all time favorite movies. BUT... this 'review' just might be better than the movie itself. Watching these ladies discover and wind their way through... SO entertaining and reminds me why I will watch the movie over and over again.
It’s an amazing movie that doesn’t get talked about enough. Very underrated. If you think of great movies, it doesn’t come to mind. The way it makes you feel, the themes, everything. Oh, and now I want peanut butter on a spoon.
my favorite and the most true quote in this movie is "doesnt it go by in a blink" I always tell my kids that when they are upset with my grandkids...it kinda changes their attitude about getting mad when they do things they arent supposed to or dont know any better yet...they are 7 , 3 and 1....the quote works most of the time when it comes to calming them down

Glad you two liked this movie. It doesn't get enough love I feel. It's a rather underrated supernatural love story, and I'm normally not the big a fan of romance unless it's blended with my preferred genres, like Somewhere in Time (1980). Yes, it can be a bit slow, but like you said, it does a good job of showing a parallel to real life, and teaches us to appreciate the time we have, and the little things we take for granted.
One of the best movies ever made and definitely one of my 5 favorite movies of all time, this film is magical. ❤

The music for this film composed by Thomas Newman is so beautiful and actress Claire Forlani who plays Susan Parrish is simply stunning.
Love this movie, LOVE the soundtrack, like wowee what a score, literally one of the best movie scores ever. Love Claire Forlani too, she's just perfect in this. Many many more things I could say, it's always had a special place in my heart.

I think she's fantastic. I've never seen someone suppress an accent so well. I would be hard pressed to convince someone she wasn't from the states after seeing this and Mallrats.
This is one of my absolute favourite movies! The acting, the cinematography, the MUSIC! And being a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels makes Brad Pitt's Death an absolute joy to watch! A side note about the lovemaking scene between Susan and Death. He looked very bewildered and chocked - and of course he would be as it was his first time ever, after aeons of "abstinence". But in some (maybe even many) cultures an orgasm is referred to as a small death, which means that Death at that very moment for the first time would have experienced a fleeting sensation of what it feels like for a human to die...and it probably had an equally profound impact on him as the lovemaking itself.

In the first scene where we see Lois Miller (the woman in the wheelchair) when Joe places his hands on her and she smiles. He wasnt taking the pain away, he gave her a glimpse of “that next place” this movie is FANTASTIC. The writing along with the cast was perfect cinema.
Meet Joe Black is one of my favorite movies. It's filled with special moments. I can't believe you didn't play the lamb sandwich scene? But what's so striking about this movie is its perfection of execution. The cinematography, musical score, script, and of course performances. It was all executed utterly perfectly
I remember the first time I saw this, and the SHOCK when the cars hit him, LOLOL. They really catch you off guard with that one!
Cassie has a REALLY beautiful insight I never considered - how Death might have his views softened, his hand stifled, because of his experience of life : ) A truly great insight from one of, if not my most, FAVORITE and cherished reactor :D Met and matched by only her darling sister. I've seen this more than a few times and it's moved me more times than I can admit - but this is a perspective I had yet, somehow, to consider. What a direction and what a story that could be! "Death" learns to live and, then, forever more, finds himself halted or hesitant in handing out "death"... forever more. Wow, way to go Cassie! I told you! Every time I come back to this, I find something new, I find something wonderful and nuanced and wonderful.
One of my favorites movies of all time... I saw this in theater with a group of friends... I remembered that I was the only person who enjoyed it.. I fell in love with Claire Forlani 😍..and still till this day 😆.. I got teary-eyed in the theater too in front of everyone...Hopkins and Pitt nailed their roles...and yes everyone else too Quincy... loved the peanut butter part and the introduction to Joe the first time

When you said "A movie about a gorilla" I knew you were in for a pleasant surprise! Such an underrated movie with excellent performances all around. One of my favorites!
This movie is epic, powerful, and layers of bonds between family, friends and death.
My great aunt passed away on my great uncles birthday. They were high school sweethearts and together forever. She stayed with him all day. And after all the guests left and they were about to clean up, she just said she feels exhausted, laid on the sofa and died. The way William Parrish dies reminded me of that.
Great movie, the Soundtrack, in my opinion, is a masterpiece.

I lost my Mom in '18 and one of our favorite films was "Meet Joe Black"...it was difficult for her because she was the youngest and had a similar relationship with her father. Hopkins actually resembles him in a lot of ways. I always wanted to dance with her the way he did, but never truly had the chance. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to watch this with you and your sister -- never a dull moment 😊

I so love living vicariously through these "reaction films." I still remember seeing this for the first time in the theater as I am a student and practitioner of metaphysics. This motion picture instantly appealed to me because of the subjective and spiritual content! The core essence of this story was/is transcendent!

I really love this movie. It didn't do well when it first came out because of the huge tonal shift from a simple romance to a metaphysical allegory about life, love and leaving a lasting legacy. That death at the beginning was so jarring to some audiences that they never recovered, and they bowed out of the more 'spiritual" aspects. After watching this film multiple times, I began to love it more and more. The idea of an omnipotent being having a time out to experience mortal life and love is immensely more interesting than the standard "meet cute" movie trope that was rampant at the time.

Some stories are hard to market. I don't totally remember the ads but when I finally saw it the movie was way different then I thought it would be.
