Baby Sandhill Cranes

  • My favorite part is when baby number 1 walks into a pine cone and its right foot gets cought momentarily, sending the wobbly chick to the ground (7:05).

  • "Public appearance" with your help. Otherwise it would have stayed private. I enjoyed this video greatly. Thanks.

  • Thank you for this lovely video of "Crane life" ... I'm a BIG FAN of these beautiful creatures and enjoyed your video very much! A pair of Sandhills used to raise their family by a nearby lake here in central Florida, and because I spent so much time with them, they came to accept me as "one of them" and would even swoop down from the sky to land RIGHT next to me (which can be pretty startling when you aren't expecting it - LOL!) It's always sad when they lose a baby, as happened in your experience, but I don't think that either of those two "suspects" were guilty. From what I've observed over the years, neither one of them would DARE to mess with cranes ... even LARGE gators FLEE from them. And the cranes wouldn't let turtles or gators anywhere near their babies. I've even seen a solitary crane put a large gator "to flight" when the gator was on the shore stalking another species (a common gallinule.) That crane just went charging after the gator with its wings flapping and sent it running back into the water! I've also seen cranes (with babies) chasing gators on other occasions, both on land and in the water. So, although I don't rule out the possibility of a gator catching a young crane now and then, I just think that a more likely "suspect" for your missing baby would be an eagle or a hawk ... eagles have even been seen (by others in this area) attacking and killing ADULT Sandhill Cranes ... and actually flying off with the dead cranes in their talons!!! :-( So if they can even succeed in a surprise attack against the adults, then they can certainly do the same with the chicks.

    • The biggest danger to Florida native Sandhill Cranes are Boa Constrictors. Even the Alligators are now cautious of them. They will steal the eggs and chicks right from the nest. If the parents object, they will eat them too.

    • @@chrisgordon5719 ... Yes, it's terrible that Boa Constrictors have become such a problem for our native wildlife in FL. And they seem to be extending their range northward too ... used to be that they were mainly in the Glades, as far as I know. :-(

  • their is a breeding pair, near my home, I've been observing them for the past three years. The first year they had hatched two chicks, that almost made it till adulthood 8 months after they hatched the family would fly in a group and while feeding on an open field I think one of the chicks was struck by lightning as it was found dead and it looked burnt. Year two the pair also hatched 2 chickes after about a month in half I only saw one chick with the parentsI took a picture of the family about 8 months after the chick was born and it is the picture in my profile. Year 3 last month the pair hatched a single chick and so far so good. I love watching these birds I think they are elegant and they beutify our ecosystems

    • Bird life is hard for ground nesting birds. A couple cranes raised a chick at my work place until it was 5 months old. Then they showed up and their adolescent had a broken right wing after a storm a week and a half ago. The wing was terribly twisted. I just saw them, without their kid, yesterday.

  • These are such gentle creatures, I have a pair that have been living next door to me for years in Florida. Sofar their babies have made it, except for this ... yesterday one of them got hit on the 2 lane hwy. I damn near cried when I saw it. They come to my house every morning for peanuts, and I've been doing videos on them this year, reporting on the death this morning was hard. God video.

  • I had a neighbor who came up on weekends & always let his 2 dogs run free. One time they went after the baby cranes and killed both of them 😢 Other neighbors confronted that doctor about his dogs killing the baby cranes! He no longer has those dogs !!!

  • Cranes, storks, eagles, owls all are not good parents. They kill their own chicks, throw them out of nests or their own sibling eats each other. My guess is some animal got the chick.
