    • @@rajatgadge Depending on what you meant by "fine"! Before the Yonex one, this pair had a record of 4 wins 1 loss agains the Thai pair that got 1st place. Clearly, they're struggling in this second tournament because of the injury. As a pro, I'm sure she's a very different view!

      @huaxzhang@huaxzhang3 жыл бұрын
    • @@huaxzhang well they made it to the quarters here. They had a 2-2 record against this indian pair with Indian winning the last two. So this makes it 2-3. Indians winning this one shouldn't come as a surprise. Injury should never be an excuse. If it was a major one she could have chosen to retire instead. But she chose to play on. Also her presence at the coaching bench for other Malaysian pair gives an idea that she didn't have much issues to struggle in the match. It is just that the pair who performed better got the win.

  • Ashwini is a lot better at the net than at the back, for obvious reasons. Although her smashes are fairly strong for a woman, she’s not going to win any rallies playing at the back of the court. On many occasions, she continues playing from behind instead of switching quickly to the front (half-smash or drop and move forward) giving Rankireddy the chance to use his power at the back court. The man has one of the hardest smashes in men’s doubles and it’s almost painful to watch him crouching in front while she keeps smashing ineffectively from the back court. During this rally, beginning at 58:32 she switches and gives Satwik a chance to play at the back, even though they lost that rally. For heaven’s sakes, woman, move forward and let the man use his smash!

    @lxjkob@lxjkob3 жыл бұрын
    • I'm not disagreeing, but the man can also be an imposing figure at the front. They did win a couple points where Rankireddy took the net, with his reach at the net it's hard to put the shuttle past him. Of course you want to play mostly in the desired formation. But it adds a dynamic if the female is also confident from the back, and the man can charge the net and kill everything in reach. Keeps the opponents guessing. Ashwini is very used to playing the back court from her long partnership with Jwala Gutta.

      @vixter33@vixter333 жыл бұрын
    • @@vixter33 You’re right, he’s imposing in the front, but he’s typically effective when they’re playing side-by-side and he attacks and goes forward, or during a rally which is flat and fast and he gets in the front. The problem is, when she gets stuck at the back court, their opponents don’t respect her and don’t even care to flatten the return, they just keep lifting it back to her and she keeps wasting a chance for a point by trying to control the rally from behind. She’s clearly no Arisa Higashino with a powerful jump smash. She did that a few times over the first two games. I know she used to playing with Jwala and that’s the problem. All four are women and there is some sort of parity. The difference between her smash and her partner’s smash is probably minimal. It’s not the same when you have a guy who is one of the hardest smashers in the world. This is mixed doubles and her primary task is to set up her partner and finish of weak returns when he smashes. She forgets she’s playing a mixed doubles game and continues rallying from behind squandering an opportunity to win the point. It’s pointless. I think after the second game during the interval, some of the advice given to her by the coach and Satwik himself was probably along those lines. That’s when you see her beginning to switch in the third game.

      @lxjkob@lxjkob3 жыл бұрын
    • @@lxjkob Is ashwini too small , light in weight and weak too have a strong enough smash that her opponents respect ?

      @gtaquizmaster@gtaquizmaster3 жыл бұрын
    • @@gtaquizmaster She doesn’t generate enough power from the backcourt to overwhelm the opposition, especially against a male opponent at that level. Even a top smasher like Arisa Higashino who has far superior power AND angle (jump smash) in her smashes doesn’t keep playing at the backcourt for long before switching to the front to get Yuta to the back. She wins many points from her smashes at the back, even against male players, but she gladly would move to the net as soon as she can. Look it up, if you haven’t already. Ashwini is not in the same league. If you don’t have a potent smash or offense from the backcourt, you’re never a real threat from that distance. She’s good at the front and that’s where she ought to rotate to when she can. Sometimes she doesn’t do that and she chooses to keep playing from the back during a rally. Satwik has one of the hardest smashes and she should get him to the backcourt and play to the team’s strengths. Their opponents would be very happy to let her keep playing in the back instead of dealing with Satwik’s power. Her mindset sometimes is that of a women’s doubles player instead of an XD player. Every single point is crucial in games at that level. If you can’t think tactically and you dwell on your ego instead, you’re just wasting points and not winning games.

      @lxjkob@lxjkob3 жыл бұрын
    • @@lxjkob very well explained. Do you think she keeps sticking at the back of the court and keeps trying to win with her ineffective smashes because of her ego and her refusal to admit that her smashes are weak and she has much smaller power than Satwik ?

  • Ashwini is close to retirement. Poor Ranki has to score twice the points for all the mistakes done by her. The coaches should pair Ranki with a younger player who can play the net shots and setup shots so that he can attack. Ranki should be in the backcourt driving those powerful smashes at the female player. They got lucky this time.

    • So, no mistakes by Satwik at all ? Have you seen the match against sapsiree, dechapol, where they lost due to satwik's mistakes? we tend not to see the mistakes by our favourites, that's natural. This pair's success is partly because of Ashwini's capabilities from the back court. Let's not be ageist here, she loves her game, she is improving at 31. Suggest a better player, is there any ?

    • @@gnanasagar1178 Ashwini is not in her prime.. Ranki is a young player. He needs to be paired with someone who can play the net game and setup a lift from opponents so that he can attack. Ashwini can't play nets, her smashes from backcourt are good for WD but not effective for XD. You can watch MD matches of Ranki too.. When Ranki is in the backcourt they were able to get points. Sathwik is fire in Men's doubles along with Chirag Shetty and they are World no. 3 in ranking atm whereas Ashwini is close to retirement and has poor technique. That's why Sathwik has to balance her poor or lack of net play by scoring double the points. He isn't able to do what he's best at because Ashwini isn't doing her best either. He has to cover for her and hence he stands near the net and isn't able to smash properly and to smash, u need to stand near the backcourt. They are a weak team due to Ponappa.
