It has always been believed that Crystal Palace Football Club was formed in 1905. With the help of author Peter Manning, Palace TV's Chris Grierson searches for the truth. A truth that will re-write the club's history books and reveal that not only was cricketing legend WG Grace a key figure in the formation of the professional club, but a claim can also be made to be the oldest football club still playing professionally.
Does this mean we technically are part of the English Game on Netflix?
The English game was long after the Crystal Palace Football Club was formed. And NOT a true account of FA Cup.

An entertaining and informative watch. There is no qualification or query in the language used within Crystal Palace's Professional Team Handbook (1906) when it directly references that this is the very same team to have been playing in the seasons from 1873-76. The same Palace team - from those earlier seasons - had then supplied international players for England. The writer of that article in 1906 couldn't have guessed how significant their words would become over a century later - as digitisation brings their words to life, KZhead takes them a worldwide audience, and Crystal Palace fans clamour to get the attention of the Football Association!
I was expecting a load of cr*p, but got the opposite - an excellent piece of journalism.
I would say the fact that we were at the founding fathers meeting when the FA was formed says all you need to know. We are the oldest surviving football club!
Still 4 years off that even if you accept this claim.

I've been a supporter since the 1960s, although for some gruelling periods of hopping up and down between the first flight and the second, it made me feel as if I'd been supporting from the 1860s! It's really great to see Palace now established in the Premier League with a directorial board capable of cementing their status and expand the club's ambitions. Kudos to Steve Parish. As for oldest club? Munich 1860 of the Bundesliga might have a story to tell. Thanks again for the great video documentary - it made me feel glad all over!

@@ykabash Professionally, yes, 1899. However, much like the forefathers of Crystal Palace, the 'team' on an amateur basis was around from 1860. From Wikipedia: The roots of the TSV's founding as a physical fitness and gymnastics association go back to a meeting held 15 July 1848 in a local pub, Buttlesche Brauerei zum Bayerischen Löwen. It was a time of revolutionary ferment due to the 1848 Revolutions, and the club was banned in 1849 by the Bavarian monarchy for "republican activities". The club was formally reestablished on 17 May 1860 and after mergers with a number of other local associations in 1862 was known as Turnverein München. A football department was created on 6 March 1899 and played its first matches against other squads three years later. But then you can't always rely on Wikipedia!
@@ChrisWEJohnson but read it carefully, it says the football department itself wasn't formed until 1899 (doesn't say they were playing amateur football before that), so from 1860-1899 it was only competing in other sports and not football, so the football team can't claim those years. It would like Palace trying to claim 1857 which was the cricket club founding and not 1861 which was the football club founding, wouldn't work

Very interesting and at first glance quite convincing. And somehow it partially resembles the history of the Football Club Spartak Moscow. Now this football club has its history from the Moscow Sports Club (MKS) -1922. But it turned out that this club is legally the Russian Gymnastics Society Sokol (Falcon), officially founded in May 1883. And football appeared in the Russian Gymnastics Society in 1897. And The history of the Russian Gymnastics Society Sokol (RGO Sokol) was maliciously forgotten due to communist repressions during the Soviet Union in 1923-1954. That is, Football Club Spartak Moscow is essentially the oldest football club in Russia.
Lol, what a creepy logic. Zenit FC training center is based at Udelny park and connected historically with Kolomyagy sport society and Imperial sport fields there, including Gymnastics Society founded with the park at 1832. These claims are so crrrrap only CSKA bosses can approve =)

And the liquidation of the Sokol movement in the USSR is 1923. And the liquidation of bourgeois clubs in Moscow - 1923 (in Leningrad - this is 1924) That is, the liquidation of the Russian Gymnastic Society Sokol in March 1922 was not. RGO Sokol and the MKS have the same athletes (not just football players), the same leadership. The same red and white colors. The same place of basing - the Krasnopresnensky district of Moscow. Even the emblem of Spartak was taken from the emblem of the Russian Gymnastic Society Sokol. And the license to perform in the Moscow Football League in March 1922 in Class B was awarded to the MKS from RGO Sokol, because in 1921 it played in Class B. (Class A - the strongest, B - the average and V - the newcomers to the League). The hockey team of the MKS 1922/1923 - in essence and in composition - is RGO Sokol. Krasnaya Presnya played there until 1925 The founder of Spartak, Nikolai Starostin, also said in 1967 that Krasnaya Presnya arose in 1921 from the RGO Sokol . (After all, he was a participant in the technical events of the 20s)

Some very good factual research done there. It would be interesting to see where those other clubs went that was also at that first meeting. It is true though, none of those other clubs at the meeting are still running today. Only Crystal Palace!

In Oporto (Portugal) there was a small replica from the original Crystal Palace and until now the garden where it was placed it's called "Palácio de Cristal" in portuguese. Since I was a child it's a magical place for me with lovely memories and since early age I wonder where the name came from... At the distance the bound was established and preserved until today. Glad All Over 😍

Our examination was very thorough and has resulted in an 84-page document packed with primary/contemporary source materials. “This document shows that the Crystal Palace Football Club claim is slightly absurd and is ultimately reduced to a short note in 1906 in the CPFC club handbook and which appears never to have been mentioned again anywhere by CPFC since very recently. “It is possible to forget your own history but that really is a serious memory lapse.

Quite an interesting video, but I'm not convinced that the current Crystal Palace FC is connected to the original one. Also the fact that fans in the vox pops had little idea who the oldest club is seems to have little significance. However, anything that derails Stoke City's laughable claims to be the oldest club in the League can't be a bad thing.

I have and its false claims the document which investigated this claim came out and it is all false.. its free to download if you want to read it.. palace are NOT the oldest club

Not oldest Pro club at all didn't become pro until 1905 so this is silly claim. If you was to claim a founding club of football then yes so you need to correct the terms used.

You still weren't pro until 1905 so the claim is false and also you basically didn't exist for 40 years , a football club that had no members and didn't play football. And just because it was founded by the same people it doesn't mean it's the same team
If it was founded by the same people and owned by the same company of course it makes it the same team as you are representing "Crystal Palace Company" If they have only had One football team at one time representing themselves the claim can easily be made. The gap of no football being played isn't here or there but ultimately more proof is needed and hopefully it will be found .
