Michael J. Fox on Parkinson's, and maintaining optimism
One of the most famous actors to burst onto the scene in the 1980s, Michael J. Fox has become almost as famous for his very public fight against Parkinson's disease. With "Sunday Morning" anchor Jane Pauley, the "Family Ties" and "Back to the Future" star looks back on superstardom, raising $1.5 billion for Parkinson's research, and a new documentary tracing his life, called "Still."

@@Leo23XR cures don't make money over time, treatment does
@Sovereign Freedom My mom has early onset PD. I think selligeline and rasageline also show promise. They are "lighter" drugs than L-Dopa or dopamine agonists, they actually don't increase dopamine but inhibit MAOI so that the dopamine you have lasts longer before being broken down. Becuase it doesn't actually supply dopamine, it is less likely to downregulate your dopamine or cause you to develop tolerance. I wished my mom had tried it when she was early on, maybe it can help you given that you don't take l-dopa.

Yes, seeing this was a bit shocking, as I hadn't seen him in an interview in a long time and was just curious where he's at - but I also wasn't aware he was 76. That's actually (and somewhat sadly) now the average life expectancy in America, after COVID dropped it (but it was already starting to a bit beforehand). My grandma was diagnosed in her 70s and only made it to like 79, and really, the fact he's been symptomatic since he was like 30-something and still made it to the current average is really impressive. I hate to say though that it looks like he's nearing the end here.

Stay strong. Hopefully there will be medical breakthroughs for many of with these terrible diseases, and in the meantime some better treatments for those of us who suffer more than most will know. I've been living with very severe chronic pain for 25 years, as a result from a work injury that broke the L5/S1 disc in my spine, and even before that I've lived with pains from as far back as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Since around 2000 I've had some strange events, like losing the ability to lift my leg more than a few inches, and not being able to move an arm, which was attributed incorrectly to my back problems. Then, this past 2020, as most of the world was dealing with covid, I had some type of "event" where I went from not being to move my leg, to then being able to move it, and some of the worst nerve pain in my lower back and down both legs. I also experienced permanently blurry vision in my right eye, chronic depression/anxiety, and severe brain fog. Now I am being told I more than likely have multiple sclerosis (still waiting on a VEP test and likely another spinal tap). When I read the symptoms I know "this is it". I'm really scared of my future, and I'm just trying to take things a day at a time. I am trying to make the most of what I am able to do. I am scared but I'm trying to remain resilient.

My mom died last August from Parkinson's. She was just shy of her 81st birthday. She only made it a few years after her diagnosis, and she started to fall often enough that we tried to keep her from walking on her own because it just got to be too dangerous. So for the last year and a half or so of her life she was confined to a wheelchair. Watching her slowly fade away from us was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do. She also suffered from dementia, so her mind and memory were failing along with her body. When I watch this interview, I'm reminded all over again of how this disease doesn't care who it attacks, it just slowly takes away everything until there's nothing left. I know this piece was probably supposed to be heartwarming, but it made me cry. I miss my mom so much, and I'm so sad for what has happened to a great person like Michael J. Fox.

Nice to learn that so many people still love him. Nice to see this video growing. The amount of comments on this video and its performance compared to other videos by this channel says it all. He was and remains special and a generation loves him and prays for him sincerely. I hope he sees these comments or someone tells us how much he is loved across the world. You will see comments from everywhere on this video.
A few generations love him. My father has shown me Back To The Future back in the 90s. I still think (even though I'm a big Star Wars nerd) that that movie is the perfect trilogy. I'm always on the edge of my seat when I watch it. Michael is a big part of that. His energy, his dynamics. It's very sad to see how Parkinson's disease is affecting him, but at the same time it's so inspiring to see that he pushes through, still going strong. It will be a sad day when he will pass away.
This is touching and inspiring. I am 55 years old and right in his generation of Family Ties, etc. and this breaks my heart and also makes me look into my own heart and repair the things I take for granted and be more thankful and humble. Thank you to God and I pray Michael is saved but it sure seems like he is with his optimism!
@Selena Aleksick I discovered him in my teens, in the mid 90s, saw family ties as a little child but really fell in love with him after watching back to the future in 1994. And still love him as much, if not more since that time. The next best movie I discovered after that was 2001: A Space Odyssey in 2002 or 2001. For a considerable time that one remained my favorite movie superseding BTTF. But BTTF again regained its spot after a couple of years. Since mid 1990s, I've watched thousands of Hollywood moives and had about 5000 DVDs at one time. Now I don't watch that many. Too much time wasted. But MJF and BTTF will always remain in my heart and also Family ties. I guess many of my brain cells and part of my DNA have his name in them now. MJF might be part of my genetic makeup now. Not sure if such traits are passed down the generations when you love something so much. I really feel for him and pray for him. His life his choice. We must respect his choices. Only he can tell what kind of pain or misery he is in. I am sure people must tell him he is so loved and so revered. Perhaps that is giving him the strength to continue this fight.
How could you not
Well, he did touch everyone's life, in some way. For most it was probably the Back to the Future films we saw as kids and still enjoy today. The world makes time for those who benefited others and wore their heart on their sleeve. Paying it forward, and all that.
His wife Tracy has been a rock for him. He chose wisely. Her love and support I believe has helped to extend his life and give him whatever health and time he has. God bless not only him, but Tracy as well. I see you girl.
7:44 “With gratitude.” In two words he has taught us so much.

You have to love Michael J. Fox....it's heartbreaking to know that he is suffering from this horrible disease, but he has given so much to so many over the years. He has a beautiful family that love and support him. God bless you, Michael.
That family and support are the reason he has been able to do so much. Without that, he would be in much worse shape, and there would be no foundation. That is the real problem in the US. If you don't have support (and so many don't) you are just out of luck and left to rot.

I've never stopped loving the work he has done as an actor nor the way he faces this life altering battle.
I watched his documentary the other night “Still” and burst into tears 5 minutes in. Im a child of the 80’s and I can’t express how much l love this man. He’s the only short man I ever had a crush on (I’m 5’10 lol) he’s a force to be reckoned with. The documentary was inspiring too because I know what it’s like to have your body turn on you and be in pain every day. I’m 47 and I’ve had chronic pain for 20 years and like Michael in his early stages he covered it up with alcohol and pills. At first I thought I had fibromyalgia and I do, but in the past year I’m dealing with newer, scarier pain like sharp shooting pains similar to Bee Stings in my hands one minute and numbness the next and limited movement. I don’t think it’s Parkinson’s because I have no tremor but these changes I’m noticing are scary. Thanks for your honesty and bravery Mike. we’ve all got your back. ❤
don't know how you couldn't love this man, burst into tears when he said he wont live past 80, just hit me how f***ing incredible and intoxicating his spirit is. Excited to watch STILL been looking forward to it.
He's got more courage that I would have in his place. Amazing that his foundation has raised 1.5 billion dollars to help end this horrible disease. A true hero in my book. Someone that helps others and does not ask for anything in return. Huge APK fan and Marty McFly too!
I can’t believe there is nothing out there to help him….even just cut his symptoms in half 😢
Huge money donated & no rsolution other than charity owners live like kings
He has always been one of my favorite actors. ❤️ His courage, humor, and positivity is an example to us all. His wife, too, who has been by his side the whole time. ❤️
He set the tone for my entire generation. You're always graceful in our book, Mike. Thanks for the memories and the inspiration.
He STILL has a way of making you smile! WOW! Godspeed to you MJF!
What a great segment!! He is so honest about dealing with Parkinson’s, even about having more resources than most!! Being a great actor is almost overshadowed by his work on bringing attention and research to Parkinson’s!! I am amazed how he keeps a good attitude and humor throughout it all!! I am looking forward to watching the documentary!! Michael J. Fox ❤️
@Vinicius Rodrigues < What a horrible creature you are to keep pasting such hatred.
@Vinicius Rodrigues troll! Are you going to repeat this vile statement on all the comments? Do us all a favor and give into your wish.
great? whats great? the expoitation? another woke kid steph
@@AlreadyShortit’s not exploitation, it’s awareness. Michael J. Fox wants to put himself out there so people are aware of what Parkinson’s Disease is and how it affects real life human beings.
@@AlreadyShort what are yo talking about???? He is still a person no matter what..
I grew up watching Micheal on screen. It was seeing him in "Back To The Future" that got me into skateboarding. To see what this disease has done to him is heartbreaking. And yet, he is doing his best to bring awareness to Parkinson's. A great man.
“With gratitude optimism is sustainable “ wow what a statement !
Wow. The energy it takes to just get through a normal day for him is astounding and humbling. What a phenomenal human being.
My Grandfather passed away from Parkinson's. He was a physically strong and very smart man. And I remember when he was diagnosed, he said " I can handle stuff happening to me physically, but I don't want anything interfering with my mind." The specialist told him to keep his mind active as much as possible. So he kept constantly trying to build things that required him to use his brain. I believe that was good therapy for him. He fought until the end, I am extremely proud of him.
My grandfather had Parkinsons too. He could not talk to us, stuttered. But he was intelligent. Kept his mind sharp with game shows like Jeopardy. Never complained, at least around us grandkids. Always a smile. Pneumonia finally took him. Love you Tata.
😭😭😭
My dad had Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. He didn’t speak in the end or know who anyone was, but he was always smiling.
My dad had it too. I had to hand feed him near the end.
My Grandad had Parkinson's too. Apart from having a daily snooze after lunch the rest of the day he kept very active, always out in his shed scheming some sort of invention or fixing things. He had this 'I'm not going to let this beat me' attitude and hardly ever showed frustration with it. Like yourself, I was so so proud of my Grandad and was honoured to be his Granddaughter.
I fell in love with this man as soon as i saw family ties. Still live him to this day. Love his positivity.
Jane, I love you!!!! And I sure miss seeing so much of you as we used to!!! I’m 74, almost 75, & remember back then!!! You are so good at what you do, interviewing people, etc.!!! Love your interview with Michael J. Fox!!! You were the perfect one to do it!!! And I love Michael J. Fox, too!!! So admire him for how he is handling his Parkinson’s disease with such grace & humor!!! He is wonderful!!! Thank you both for this great interview & a view of Michael’s life now!! And in the past, too!!! ❤👍🌺🩵🌹💖👋💜🥰🌷🤗✋👏💋🙏🤘💕😊😇❤️😍🧡
Much respect for this incredible man, and his wife who has never failed him.
I so appreciate the fact that Michael stays in the public eye. Everybody loves Michael J Fox, and for me, never more than now. 🥳💜🦊
Love him so much, both for his wonderful entertainment in the 80s, (Family Ties is still one of my alltime favourite sitcoms) and his incredibly courageous public battle against this deadly disease. You are a giant Michael and I salute you sir. ❤
All of my love to Michael J. Fox and his family. No life is wasted if it was spent making people smile. 😌
Michael even in high-school was a funny guy...I met him through friends at a party. Our friend group at the time were really proud of his accomplishments...more like in awe as teens. Though I haven't seen Michael since 1978 he has always amazed me with his strength and determination in fighting this disease...I am still proud as ever having known you just that short period of time. You said it..."with gratitude it is sustainable"
You're so lucky! He's such a nice guy!
One has to learn gratitude. I've had to after a car accident that left me a paraplegic. FAITH in God has also helped me along this journey.
Back In The Future is on. "I'm really good in it" 😅 Love you Michael Fox. I have nothing but admiration for Michael Fox, such a wonderful person.
This generation doesn’t have a clue what this man has done for the 80’s generation.. what a wonderful human
I was born 94 and he is a legend. Back to the Future is a all-time classic
Mabey no but I can see in his eyes he's a stone cold fighter
@@melinagoransonI grew up with back to the future but born in 1991
I fail to see what he did for a generation tbh, so sad to see none with this illness.
He’s been one of my life long crushes 🥰 To see him still going and making the best of everyday with his beautiful family by his side is amazing-God Bless you Michael and for many more years🙏❤️
"I'm really good in this!" Is a true understatement. When a whole team is so confident in you that they reshoot a whole movie and it ends up becoming the highest grossing film of the year? Not to mention, one of the greatest films of all time? That's a special achievement.
Many stars would not want to be seen this way. They'd just refuse all interviews or have someone else do it for them. But Michael wants to show what Parkinson's really is. I admire him for that.
U r right, I wouldn't do it,
Michael J Fox thank you for coming to my elementary school when I was a child Colson Elementary talking to children with special needs with learning disabilities I am the girl you told me I could do anything doctor said I would be blind im not doctor said i wouldn't write well here i am writing and reading doctor said i wouldn't ever have a family.. now a 39 year old woman about to be 40 May 24th and 2023 here i am with a amazing husband and children and living a as normal lifestyle as possible thank you for inspiring and believing I hope this reaches you I am forever grateful
We speak of celebrity role models...Michael J. Fox *is* the quintessential role model, hero...Badass.
thank you so much dear fan
He’s a gem, I’m praying for him. He’s a manifestation of grace and relentlessly living his life with bravery.
God gave it to him, don't try to change God's mind
My aunt Dolly died at 80 and she fought this for over 30 yrs. It was heartbreaking to witness. God Bless all those on this journey.
My godmother did, too. She had it for at least 20 years. She was also an inspiration because she had such a love for Jesus through it all. Now my daughter-in-laws father has it. God bless the suffering🙏🏻
Was and still is one of my favorite actors of all time. And now I respect him more than ever!
What a iconic man!! Dignity and humor can change us all❤
Something about MJF just touches me so deeply. I don't know if it's the nostalgia of growing up with him but when his diagnosis was announced it felt so personal. It's been so inspiring to see him with us and still fighting and looking good while doing it.
Sending love right back did you attend any red carpet ?
My mother had early onset of Parkinson’s disease. She develops symptoms when she was 40. It was terrible to watch. It’s a terrible disease. And he has handled it with grace. And brought a lot of attention to the disease, and raise money.
Research is a scam. Vaccines are likely the culprit.
Michael J. Fox is still at the top of his game! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
We ‘still’ love you, Michael 💞
Just watched this when it aired this morning. It was so incredibly sad to see him like that. Parkinson's is a very cruel disease. It's a very slow death. For what he has done to help raise awareness and the millions of dollars that his foundation has raised is absolutely phenomenal! I hope & pray to God that a cure will ne found much sooner than later. He is making the most of it (even with a sense of humor‼️) When he fell on the sidewalk during the segment this morning, and a lady came over to make sure he was ok, he told jer that she "knocked him off his feet" was pure Michael. He is an absolutely wonderful human being.
I too pray to God that there's a cure sooner than later!! My brother has had Parkinson's for 20+ years now and it breaks my heart!!
Note that he shot that interview a few months ago, look at his recent photos from a few days ago, he truly does look better.
my heart goes out to him. he’s such a strong human. ❤
He's not even a human being anymore.
When he said "Optimism is a staple." Did you see? I recognized his greatness in that moment. I think everyone who sees that moment probably saw and felt the same. I hope so. What a powerful energy. Phenomenal. That mile marker really is a game changer. This takes it from chicken or egg? to how do you take your poultry? In the near future, please. I love him and my family and yours so much and I want them here. ❤
This is tough to watch but it's the reality of the disease. It's great that he uses his stardom as a way to advocate for people with this destructive disease. He is truly inspiring.
Hadn’t realised Michael J Fox had declined so much. But he’s such a brave man opening up about how he truly feels. And always thinking of his family.. God bless them all Xx
That was a profound statement from a man I have been watching since i was 10 years old and I am 52. He said " You don't die from Parkinson's , you die WITH Parkinson's".
I’m glad he is helping people to understand the disease.
I have so much respect for him. He had everything and his own body betrayed him. He’s still fighting and helping others. People who go through things like this become honest, grateful, humble and the best kind of people you can be.
everytime life kicks me i look at his optimism and courage and try to be like him
