PERU | The Road That Shouldn't Exist

Peru 3N
This route we’re planning to drive in Peru can easily be considered one of the most unlikely roads to ever exist. There’s almost nothing written about it online, ‘cause it’s just another highway right? Wrong, far from it. From my research parts of this road can be considered the most switchbacked in the world, with one section containing a staggering 57 hairpin turns in a distance of 1.8 kms as the crow flies. Not only that, the number of landslides can be counted daily, not annually. Carved thousands of feet above sea level into the sides of mountains, the 3N is an anomaly. It chalks up as the most hair raising and dangerous drive we’ve ever attempted. Just an average day here n Latin America.
We’re entering Peru on the North West Coast. Coming from the mountains in Ecuador, this was a shock to the system on all fronts. In some ways it felt like we had entered into a Mad Max film. Dust everywhere. We’ll be following the coast along the Pan American highway until be reach Trujillo. Along the way we’ll be looking for some sand dunes. From there we’ll navigate directly East, towards the 3N.
What started as a leisurely drive through farmland and small villages quickly left us in anticipation for the most intense parts of the route - the game of counting land slides, and the locals who are practicing for the indy 500 on the edge of a cliff.
If you remove the remnants of recent land slides, the perilous cliff edges, pure solitude and 1000M elevation gain through dozens of hairpins, it’s just your average highway right.
The route continues it’s winding snake like story though mountain villages dotted with beautiful murals, locals selling their wares and kids yelling to their parents “gringo gringo!”
Things became more interesting when the road turned to mud. Thankfully the government has interest in maintaining this section but its obvious these land slides are recent, likely from rain in the last few days.
It’s amazing to us that these peaceful mountain villages exist along these crazy roads. We didn’t know it yet, but we hadn’t even seen the real crazy….

Hello again from the balmy south Okanagan - we're at +4°C here today still. Where do I begin my comment today? How about this - I watch you all on a 15"x27" hi-def screen with Sennheiser headphones, so I can see and hear the details incredibly well. Incredible is a good descriptor of this entire video. Holy Smokes... Way back in the day we piloted out '80 Toyota 4x4 on a mining road between the Ashnola and came out before the Whipsaw Bridge on the 3, which we thought was sporty - but this was just crazy. Having been on a few BC backroads over the past 40 plus years, I could "feel" how close the edge was sometimes. Again, Holy Smokes you two...All the best to you both as we head into Christmas and thanks for taking us along. Safe travels as always.
Thank you so much for watching! We can’t wait to watch our films on the big screen one day. We’re happy to hear they’re good! Happy holidays!
Cool i grew up on okanagan lake in a little town called winfield. Down in ok center.it was called love to hear about the okanagan.
All I got to say is "Epic". By far the best episode yet. Everyone here in the comments has said enough on how awesome your expedition is going.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼
You finally made it to my father's country! He passed away 2 years ago but he would have loved to see this! I didn't get around to building my own little overlander until his passing too, but at least for me, you guys have been an inspiration. Thanks and may you always be safe, or at least fine after all the adventure!
That fills our soul cups. 🙏🏼 thank you so much for being here with us.
I've been anticipating the Peru content with great expectation. I went to Peru in 2015 on a 2 week medical missions trip. We were on a diesel river boat on the Ucayali River. Started in Pucallpa & headed northeast. It was an amazing trip. My job was a dental assistant, for which I had no experience, just willing hands to help. Thank you for bringing back good memories & letting me see more of such a beautiful country & the wonderful people.
Wow, it sounds like you had an experience yourself! Thank you so much for watching!
Amazing! Your videos just keep getting better and better,
Oh.... My.... God! THAT was intense! Wow... Those roads, those tunnels, those slides! Pretty scary! Absolutely fabulous filming! Wonderful video! Love love you both❤❤❤
Scary, but so so amazing!!🤍
Out is this world guys!! Your footage is second to none and the story telling is the best I have heard here on KZhead!!
We appreciate it🙏🏼 thank you!
your best one yet. very well done, you two.
Wow, thank you!!
Been watching your adventure since the beginning of the Chinook build. You guys are maybe the best filmmakers on KZhead...Extremely well done.
What an amazing compliment. Thank you so much for being here with us since the beginning!
OMG !!! What the rest of Peru looks like! In the States most of us have an idea of the rest of the world based on tourism brochures. Thanks for showing us the real World, Keep 'em coming! 😍😍
Peru is massive! And full of amazing places. We can’t wait to bring you more.
Love the epic views, the peril and the music ❤
The most breathtaking episode yet. Well done 👌🏼
Thank you!
KILLING IT as usual guys!!!!! EPIC cinematography and as always entertaining storytelling.
Thank you so much Max!
Absolutely epic episode. Love watching your journey since the beginning.
Thank you so much!
Holy switchback Batman! What a loyal rig that Toyota has been to bring you both to the most amazing places this side of the earth has to offer. The views were unbelievable in this video great stuff.
We are grateful every day for this machine we put together. Thank you so much for watching!
Kudos to the men and women that built them roads! What amazing landscape...
Your videography is beautiful. It looks effortless... amazing trip, but amazing production...
Oh my gooshh now that was intense!! My heart was racing, I Can imagine yours as well, and where do you get gasoline? Stay safe 🫶🙌👋
Absolutely!! Held our breath lots. We have a very big fuel tank, so we don’t have to fill up very often. We honestly forget to film those parts.
❤❤❤❤❤ OMG those roads, how many times did you have to change your undies!!!! another breath taking video. Greetings from Maple Ridge
😂 you don’t want to know! Thank you for watching!
Also the voice over is spot on and works very well for this video layout
Been watching since Baja and this was my favorite episode yet. Your guys' drone footage is incredible and inspiring. Especially since you're driving these crazy roads while you're filming! Would love to buy a TWR spare tire cover for my travel trailer (that I tow with my Toyota world runner, an 02 Sequoia haha) Really enjoying your work, looooove the truck, looking forward to the next one!
Wow, thank you for being here with us the whole way! Flying and driving has to be our favourite shots. Technical, and keeps us busy! A spare tire cover is an incredible idea ✍🏼 we will remember this. Thank you!
Just came across your channel. Man do I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the road through the mountains. That was beyond epic. Safe Travels & Thanks!!
Thank you so much! We’re glad you enjoyed it 🤙🏼
Amazing! You guys tell a great story.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just WOW all I can say love your journey Peru is no joke
You guys rock seriously, the energy you two put into these films is felt ☀️
We appreciate it🙏🏼
Your best video I've seen so far. The content, story telling and editing. I'm a US expat living in Colombia and currently exploring new regions of Colombia. But this inspires me to go more and further.
We’re so happy you enjoyed it!
Wow. That was spectacular.
Awesome video you two, loved the music! Safe travels!
Thank you so much!
absolutely stunning. To think going from vancouver island to this! Absolutely mind blowing!
For real!! The contrast is insane.
That’s gotta be the best one yet. Epic.
🤘🏼
Love Love - of course you know I have someone beside me that just wants to clean poor Sunday up - I can smell the Armor All right now 😅 Beautiful camera work again, and have we ever seen a girl get so excited over Chili - now that's a keeper! Take care and as always - much Love 💚
Can we fly dad down to clean Sunday please!!!
Wow talking about loose rock on most of the mountainsides crumbling continuously. Safe travels!
Yo this channel is freaking rad!!!! I don’t even know how I got coming from sailing KZhead but what you are doing is awesome!! Going back to watch the build videos now. After our sailing around Australia dream will probably be a tour of Australia in a troopy
Sounds like you are rad too!! We’re stoked you enjoyed the film 🤙🏼
Incredible and brilliantly filmed!
Thank you!
I saw your “now this is REMOTE” film yesterday and I’m in love with what you are doing. This is my dream life and I love to see someone living it
That’s so rad! We’re so happy you are enjoying the films!
Awesome rig you guys got and love the music
Awesome! I been thinkin this your whole journey.. How are you going to get the truck back to BC after hitting the bottom? Are you going to put it on a boat or are you going to treat us with a northbound trip back?
As much as we would love to treat y’all, we will be shipping the truck home and then getting ready for the next adventure!
That canyon looked like another planet, very cool! Enjoy watching your videos!
Totally was! Thank you 🤙🏼
Awesome, thanks for the ride!
Excellent documentary, very well edited and photographed .. I will be waiting for the next one to come along.. ::) Cant beat those old Toyotas.. !!!

😲😵💫😱. great driving these curving and swerving narrow path by both of u🙌
Thank you!!
🤙🏽 what a wild ride that was. Well done guys!
Thank you!!
I don't think I'm naive on how tough a trip like this can be. Yet, your amazingly appealing video does cause me itchy for going just this route. 😅
Haha awesome! We hope to inspire. It’s an amazing place 🤙🏼
I did Peru's inland route on "death buses" in 1999. That was the last time I traveled by bus! I wish decent digital cameras existed back then. looks like allot has changed.
We can imagine that would be our last time on a bus as well 😂 absolutely insane.
So good, your my favourite utubers, thankyou
Wow, what a compliment! Thank you 🙏🏼
Every video is better than the last. Awesome!
Heck yea!!
@@ToyotaWorldRunners There are so many unique places in Peru. I'm curious where else you guys go.
I was lucky enough, in 2016, to ride a motorcycle through canyon del pato with my wife, then girlfriend. I ended up getting stuck on a mountain in the middle of nowhere for a night. What a great time.
Seems like a part of the experience here in Peru. On a bike would be so rad!
@@ToyotaWorldRunners if y’all haven’t made it to Bolivia yet, something I wish I would of done, link up with a tour company in salar de uyuni. Cross from Bolivia into Chile through the salt flats. Met someone who did that and it sounded incredible. Suerte con tus viaje.
Epic as always.
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Good driving skills in this type of life threatening roads but what a pictourious landscape mesmerizing location wonderful 👍😊👏. have a great time safe journey 😃💗
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I love how Stacy is all smiles all the time!😊
☺️☺️
Amazing!
I guess one of the advantages for Peruvian parents is that they don't have to answer that pesky question about where babies come from. Well kiddos, the statues make the babies. Another awesome trip and video. While watching a thought came to me that of all of the Hispanic people I have met, from all of the countries you have been through, I have never met anyone from Peru. Maybe their government or economy is more stable with less war and drugs. Maybe it's just too damn far. I love the reaction to the flying peacock, it's such a joy to see something in nature that you didn't really expect.
😂😂😂 at least someone commented on that scene. Everyone else’s silence has been worrying us. That is an interesting observation.. we must say the same. And I think we will look more into that. Why aren’t people leaving Peru? Hmmm
Some pretty stark terrain!
3:15 “ peaceful, to peaceful”
Really good stuff.
fantástica edición, enhorabuena por documentar con tanta calidad este flamante viaje!
Gracias!!
That drive made my heart speed up just watching it. Can't imagine being in the driver's seat.
Drives that replace caffeine 😂
Another amazing video!
Thank you so much!
amazing stuff.... wow
nice video, that is a scary road but fun to drive.
Jesus! that was more amazing than Mary. Ball of the century.
Crazy drone footage, you must a lost the connection to the drone multiple times shooting those tunnel and switch back shot. Awesomes job !
Haha yes. Our hearts stop for a minute and we send a prayer up
Awesome video!
From Quebec Canada , this is a nice video
Congratulations ♡
Sounds like the place to be!!! How is your truck performing so far? Any issues or needed changes? Could you make a video about safety? There is a huge disconnect between what “some” people say about traveling down south vs what other people experience.
Thank you for watching!! Short answer: we haven’t had any safety concerns with the vehicle. The truck is performing amazing. We go into full detail on modifications and upgrades on our Patreon, as we feel it doesn’t suit our films. Watch for a Q and A coming up over the holidays. We will touch a lot on safety etc.
That certainly demands some courage….
Well done!
Awesome video! FYI Trujillo’s fertility sculptures were not made by the Inca. It’s the Moche! Mi lindo Perú!
Good to know!!
Wow. Peru
Wow !! Should be called "kahoonas of steel' road ! ha ha ha ha Absolutely amazing .. .. ..
Awesome!
Very nice, love the drone shots. Looks like something I would like to do. Best part is at 22:00 on. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching! We’re glad you enjoyed it 🤙🏼
I kinda wish they would build some roads like that in the states. instead we get these massive, wide monsters that you can fly around on doing 65/70 and never come close to the edge. I can’t wait for the bottom of the world. Going to be sweet to see what routes y’all take to get us there. Thanks for the proxy living.
More to come for sure! We feel like the roads just keep getting crazier.
Wow 😮
Award winning video of the Peruvian Andes 🏆🏆🏆
Thank you!!
😢oh to be so young and free and be able to travel like this
True guide
Did you love Vilcabamba? Peru is my next country! Oh man! I can’t believe you missed Montañita! Very cool beach town in Ecuador
We’re sad to have missed the coast, but now we have a reason to go back! We unfortunately missed Vilcabamba as well… for another time!
Yes! Definitely hit the coast. I spent 3 months in Ecuador and plan to go back. Loving your adventure!
Yep epic is right!!! Awesomeness.......
🤘🏼🤘🏼
I just watched your Peru the road that shouldn’t exist and liked it. The only disappointing thing is that in your edit you cut out interesting scenes, like when encountering another car in those narrow roads or the scene of the h2ofall. But overall very interesting.
There you go again!Making Van Isle roads look like child’s play😂I white knuckled it with you😅I’m assuming the mining company put in the road and power line?Who else would be that crazy!🤨Enjoy Xmas at home🎄🎁🎅
Hahaha we truly can’t believe the “highways” around Peru. An adventure just getting to work 😂 Happy Holidays!
Wooooooooooooooow ❤❤
Thanks for sharing why they don't complete or finish their homes... as I've always wondered... but can you share why they built a road through a garbage dump? (Video during your intro around 1:55-2:08)
We were so curious! And unfortunately a lot of northern Peru sees a lot of trash due to apparent lack of education as well as crazy desert winds that pick up the trash and disperse it.
@ToyotaWorldRunners Thank you for your reply. I would have to agree with you...
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
Hermosos videos los felicito,es una lastima que no tengan subtitulos en español,sigan asi
Maybe one day! Thank you for watching!
Toyota World Runners - where I come when I need some inspiration! 🚙🙂
🙏🏼🙏🏼 Cheers! Thank you for this
Greetings from the same side of this gem we've FUBAR Welcome to the right side up😂 Thanks for a very excellent post Thanks also for showing me places that would literally kill me ( lung scars ) impossible to survive When ya'all get old with son in-law I'll probably hear you're laughing from here at them complaining with how hard their commute to work was , 💯💯💯👍👍🤙🖖 Stay safe people old stoner beginning ta admire you two young ones
Greetings and thank you for watching! We may have shaved a couple years off our life driving that😅 the views helped us gain them back though!
Call a spade a spade. There are no “beautiful cities” on the northern coast of Peru. I’ve traveled all over Peru. It’s ok to call Juliaca a hellhole. It’s like if peruvians made a travel vlog about how beautiful Gary Indiana wad
hallo, was it very very nais...thank you.
Wish I was there.
What brand of tire are those? Looks like BFG
We’re running the Falken RT 01s!
Where are you guys at now?
Seems like your truck's stance isn't quite right. Your load isn't balanced, front to rear. The center of gravity is top far back. Truck is trying to pull it's front tires up. If you shifted more of your weight forward, your handling and stability would improve. It also would cause less tire and suspension wear. Stay safe.
