I think something missing from the analysis: it's not just the death of a child, it's the first time that a human dies. The parents wouldn't even know about the concept of mourning, or how to deal with a dead body.

I see the meaning of the unsupported corpse differently. Think of how learning to hold and support a newborn is so vital and stressful to new parents, this being their first time experiencing what it’s like to have a child. Here, however, you have the first human beings experiencing death for the first time ever. Not knowing how to hold his corpse, or whether they even should, shows this naivety from their part as the first parents and people to know death. I also think that “the first mourning” similarly evokes that feeling of utter loneliness in such a tragic situation: people who suffer the loss of a child-arguably the worst pain there is-feel at times incredibly alone in the experience, with few people ever being able to or even wanting to imagine what it must be like. And finally, though not as interesting of a take, there’s a kind of acceptance of loss that comes with holding the body that these parents aren’t able to grapple with, not even being able to look at the body for this moment.
Cradling a dead body is wishing it was still alive or could come back to life. Draping the body across your knees like that is an acceptance your son is truly dead.
You mentioned that the artist also lost his wife. In that light, I notice that Eve's coloring is similar to Abel. Adam seems to be the only one with blood running through his body.

I recently (accidentally) saw Bouguereau's room at Museé d'Orsay. To wander around an enormous museum and suddenly come across a relatively tiny room with majestic (gigantic) masterpieces that i held so dear to my heart is truly an outer-worldly experience. That was the first time a painting moved me to tears. Thank you for making these videos, creators like you are some rare gems (much needed) nowadays :)
This made me tear up, you put it together so well, congratulations.
To make this even deeper; when you lose parents, you’re an Orphan. When you lose a significant other, you’re a window/widower… … when you lose a child, no word exists. Since it’s the most painful and most devastating feeling to experience.. it’s so indescribable, no word or title exists for it. Seeing how our children are hopped to outlive us; Not die before us.

I would like to recommend a painting which depicts a similar theme by a hungarian pre-raphaelite painter Kőrösfői-Kriesch Aladár. His work called Ego sum via, veritas et vita (I am the way, the truth and life) was painted after his child's death and symbolises the grief and the pain, but also the acceptance and the hope in the divine will.

..i came across this painting a few days ago, whilst i was scrolling down my fyp.. just gazing at it sent shivers down my spine.. only if i had this kind of talent..
I think Adam has his hands over his ribs, not his heart. Which makes sense to me, because when you have children it can feel almost like they're a physical extension of yourself, created from your body the same way Eve was created from Adam's rib. Perhaps he's feeling grief in the empty aching part of his body where his rib used to be, which created Eve and by extension his son. Eve looks like she's trying to burrow her way back into his chest, like she wants to not exist any longer, and instead just go back to being a rib.

So many people to be alive for, so many things to be dead for. The death of a child of mine is a thing I'd instinctively desire to be dead for, I wouldn't want to be there to see it. Fetuses? Couldn't care less. A grown child though? I'd have to be alive to reconcile those around me if that were to happen. I'm a person too. I'd need to reconcile myself as well.
What a coincidence, just saw a Kehinde Wiley exhibit yesterday. Speaking of which, if you can travel for art, I highly recommend the De Young Open 2023 exhibit - I know from your style of analysis you'd love dozens, probably hundreds of the pieces.

Religious leaders have abused a lot of people. Especially today, Christian’s have a lot of victims and many people reject associating with it.
There’s a lot of essays about religous paintings out there, and they get pretty repetitive in subject manner so I skip a lot of them.

great video! may I just provide some technical advice and say that there's a quite tonal resonance at around 8kHz coming from your microphone - just a slight annoying frequency, but otherwise alright

There's another layer to Adam and Eve's grief here. Adam and eve were the ones to bring sin into the world, and death, the fruit of sin. They are grieving knowing that Able's death is their fault.

Why would anyone necessarily be disappointed with a religious painting??! Is belief in Jesus Christ now taboo in the same way that nationalism and love of country has been 'cancelled'?? Artist expressions of belief are arguably some of the finest and oldest art works that humanity has produced. Yet by your own intimation, apparently these are now an unpleasant relic of orthodoxy? Its interesting how the seemingly innocuous things we say reveal so much about our prejudice.
