Unboxing North Dakota: What It's Like Living In North Dakota

2021 ж. 3 Мам.

Is everyone in North Dakota lonely?
Is everyone in North Dakota bored?
Seriously what the hell is there to do in North Dakota?
We’re gonna answer those questions and a whole lot more. So grab your fishing poles and your hockey sticks, we’re gonna unbox the state of North Dakota!
Hey look at that. This is an oil field. These guys are working hard to get all that good black stuff out of the ground. We’re here in western North Dakota in the Bakken Oil Fields, which are kind of a big deal in these parts. Western North Dakota has the third biggest oil field in the US, and the biggest one outside of Texas.
The oil business has been a big deal for North Dakotans. It brought in people from all over the world, and caused a big spike in real estate. And it also brought this state riches. I mean at one point they were making $56 million a DAY in oil pulled out of North Dakota’s lands.
However, the oil boom here has had mixed results, and now that its peaked, folks are lookin around at each other wondering if it was worth it. We’ll talk more about that later. I mean there’s a lot more to North Dakota than just some ole oil fields and macho men walking around.
North Dakota is more than just oil fields. It’s sort of diverse and sort of interesting. If YOU were thinking about moving here, you should sort of know what you’re getting yourself into.
This is North Dakota.

  • I’ve been living in Minot for 11yrs now. Moved here when I was 15 from Escondido, CA. All my families still in Cali, minus my older brother, and I can say North Dakota saved my life. I moved here with zero credits during the second semester of 9th grade. I was able to turn my life around and walk with my class. I will never move anywhere else. I love raising my son here. There’s just enough to do. The hispanic community is really growing here and its amazing! 💗💗💗

      @BlackCapGaming@BlackCapGaming3 жыл бұрын
    • It's a little more convoluted than that, I've heard and read. But yeah, it's money motivated. Just like the changing of the Sioux name, which North Dakotans hold as dear to them as their German heritage. The tribes wanted a ransom for its use, and the state passed. Thank God they didn't go with Rough Riders. I actually got to vote on the new name and went with Hawks. Or, I abstained as both were bad. Regardless...

  • I grew up in a very small town in ND, and stayed until the 80's. Accurate description, especially about the winter months. My family, before they passed away, had a joke, "if the weather gets 20 degrees or more, consider it a warm day"! Summers were normally great. Around late July/August, activity got busy for the farmers, harvesting their crops. And Sundays during football season were either rooting for the Bison, or for the Minnesota Vikings. Might come back to see what the state is like in person, but NOT during the winter months-my body can't handle it now.

  • If youre from the south, you better make sure your car wont break down, and you better bring enough stuff to survive if it does. Actual cold isnt something that I can describe to you. You'll freeze to death if you are unprepared. Quickly. Handwarmers and heavy clothes to put on will help and can keep your water from freezing. If youre far enough away that you have to wait 2-3 hours to be rescued, you need to bring cold weather survival gear in your vehicle. You can freeze to death in that time if your truck breaks down.

Usually 7-9 inches at 1 time (and every once in a while, 1 Foot or more from a single storm). I understand the cold Winter Temps are usually more extreme in North Dakota compared to the Chicago area. I thought Billings Montana got cold, I lived in Billings Southside for 10 years before moving to Noonan & I can also see Canada from my backyard especially at night! The closest place to go grocery shopping is in Crosby which is about 14 miles west of Noonan!

Many restaurants including ethnic family owned establishments. Several small museums. Vendor fairs in the summers where artisans sell their goods. The fiber festival with activities for all. The state fair. ECT. Granted, things have changed since the pandemic but there are things to do.

  • Bismarck and Mandan have some really nice parks along the river there. This was a really good video Nick, I liked the interview section at the end. Just please stop with the "boring" stuff: that is so subjective. In Manhattan most people also hang out in bars just like in Jamestown. So the ones in Manhattan have more nearby to chose from, but you'll spend more money getting there than in Jamestown unless you are willing to walk 4-5 miles or pedal your bike, and then your bike will most likely get stolen. So besides hanging out in bars what is there to do in a small town in North Dakota: fishing, fly -fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, biking, motorcycling (on or off road), snow mobiling, golfing, competitive shooting, cross-country skiing, swimming, white water rafting, kayaking, hunting, horseback trekking, boating, water skiing, sailing, etc. Now how much of that can you do in Manhattan?

    • I love Jamestown! Don't forget the very much so thriving art community. The Hansen Arts Park has had a huge amount of work put into it with The Arts Center just a short walk away. It is also a "college town", University of Jamestown has been described "Best in the Midwest University" according to US News and World Report. I lived on a farm just outside Jamestown with my grandparents living in town and I had the best childhood. There were many time that the path from the house to the barn had snow on each side that was taller than me, but at least the wind didn't get me. I know Jamestown has changed and not all for the best. We never locked up anything and left keys in the vehicles, which you can't do now days, but I am looking to move back to the area. It is beautiful and I want to be surrounded by sunflower, wheat, flax and oat fields again, don'tchaknow?! Thank you for the insight!

Always had a good bait selection for fishing and interesting firearms in stock. Gotta say it looks like they upadated the gas station from the time of that picture to now. Several historical points of interest within that area along where the river is becoming Lake Sakakewea. The DUI thing is a pretty accurate observation. There was a guy looking for a job in oil while I was working at a park. He told me he liked the people, but it was good to talk with someone with a college background because the attitude of the oil companies seemed to be: "You have a DUI or a felony? We can work with you. You have a college degree? I'm not sure about that guy. That's kind of sketchy." I bounced at a bar, and yeah, it was crammed and loud.

  • It astonishes me to hear Grand Forks as a "dangerous place". It probably is now. I was 13 when we moved there in 1990, and lived there till 1993. It was considered an ultra-safe city/town. You could leave your door unlocked, car running at the Valley Dairy etc. The most "dangerous" thing you would possibly encounter were the moose! In fact the whole state was known to be the definition of safe. Sad what's become of some of these places in America! The last time I visited there was in 2003, and I could see the place had changed quite a bit.
