There’s something about the og jackass being so uncensored and authentic that I don’t think will ever be replicated due to cancel culture. I’m not saying all cancel culture is bad or good, (mostly it’s good imo) but what we did lose was people being able to be their flawed selfs on cam without having to worry about a flux of internet hate. And I think that’s part of why 20 years later, I connect to it. That and it humanized 90s early 000 counter culture. The right was just coming off locking innocent people up for decades over satanic panic, at the start of jackass’ popularity and I don’t think the two are unconnected. The media portrayed these 90s kids as unhinged evil villains, and Jackass showed the actual humans, are far less insidious than the media and police were leading people to believe. It wasn’t teen boys killing virgins and drinking goats blood to fight Jesus. It was a bunch of young dingus kids into metal, skating, and stunts, suffering the mental tole of capitalism, American society, and toxic masculinity. It’s like boomers were pointing at them “look how flawed todays youth is!” And jackass said “you know what? We are flawed, weird humans, but we would rather be that than fascists or worker drones” and to the great surprise of upper class America, people started identifying with these people they thought they successfully painted into a corner of “outcast”. More like out caste. It was so nice to see the top of the pyramid failing to control the bottom

I watched OG Jackass on the inside of a children's psychiatric lockup and it's so raw. The top of the pyramid was making absolute fuckin bank off the bottom of the pyramid, whilst the bottom of the pyramid got nickle-and-dimed (see his other vids for how little he got paid) and then burnt it all on drugs. The top of the pyramid convinced Steve that his drug use was part of what defined his act. It was so bad that Steveo actually sued some of his team for living like a king off him. I hear what you're saying for sure though. You're reading your own politics into it. Our generation has a bunch of confident fuck-ups in it who aren't afraid to be complete deadweight and an arrogant burden to the people around them. You say Jackass "says" we'd rather be flawed and weird. I don't think he'd rather be the person he was in any of that old footage - that was a mentally sick man. I related because we shared a mental sickness; this daring to do whatever no matter the harm to our bodies. Toxic masculinity? It was that one dude at the party who was like Steveo who WAS the toxic masculinity lol. The daring to do anything for attention and to "outman" and "be braver" than the dudes before you by doing wilder and wilder shit. It's a lot simpler than that. The toll of our social and material views/culture is absolutely abrasive, but now Steveo is a highly successful capitalist himself. Capitalism can be practiced within almost any part of the political spectrum that actually allows ownership or currency to exist. In every country that had forgone currency or direct ownership - find one that worked. You're praising what you hate because you fail to properly identify what you hate. Fascism is "EVERYTHING within the government, NOTHING outside the government", as (I think) Mussolini put it - the father of fascism. Now he runs his own entertainment media corpo around himself, sticking a little advertisement for his products at the end of every video. Highly capitalist promotion that is also perfectly fine, no? You've never seen 5% of fascism in your lifetime in the United States - I say that coming from South Africa, fleeing to England because of the genuine nightmare of living in a broken-down government's state. It makes my face contort reading Americans born within the last 60 years saying anything about that form of deep & corrupt authoritarianism. You don't even realize how free you are.
