I bought my dad the best truck at auction and drove it home across the country. I also do my signature "every fluid and filter" service to make sure this truck will last forever.

At 71 yrs old, you remind me of myself so much. Great video. I bought, repaired and sold so many cars and trucks. It is great to see a young person so mechanically inclined and taking the time to do things the right way. I appreciate your channel
Shut up
Waldo is the mechanic you wish you could take your vehicles to cause you know you can trust him and he’ll do a nice job.
It’s refreshing to see maintenance done right, instead of leaving things to fall apart, you really care, it shows and I wish you much success. We need more people like you.
Where’d you get rid of the old oil ?

I love how every project is easy for this guy. He needs a sidekick that procrastinates, is accident prone and has an unhealthy addiction to energy drinks.
And calls in sick once a week
... and takes tools out of his box without telling him or returning anything.
The lack of rust on the vehicle will make the bolts feel less tight than they were 👍🏻🏴
Good point 😂

@@RuijieZhou Virtually all auto parts stores (O'Reilly's, Auto Zone, Napa, etc} will take used engine oil for free. I suggest taking paper towels with you when you dump the old oil into their oil bin, it can get messy.
My first time seeing your channel and I'm blown away by how well you explain things as you're doing them. I'm 75 years old and remember the days when I used to work on my cars but didn't have the tools or lift or anything. There's great satisfaction in repairing your own vehicles! Your dad is very lucky to have you for a son! God bless. I subscribed to your channel and will look forward to seeing future videos.
yeah, and i'm sitting here thinking 'nice find' but if i did that and brought it to my mechanic for all the work he did on it right here i'd have another $3k into it easily depending on which bandit (oops, i mean mechanic) i would take it to. yes, it's great to be able to do your own work. i've got only 142k on my '06 1/2 ton 5.3 extended cab (bought used 7 years ago) and am hoping to get many more miles out of it yet up here in WI before it truns to a complete pile of rust. so far, it looks like my adding wheel opening fender flares and plastic rocker panels to it to cover rusted out ones just added $5k in value (lol) and make it look like a much newer truck. people seeing it for the first time since the minor cosmetic upgrade scratch their heads trying to figure out exactly what's different about the truck...lol. one thing is for sure...these are great trucks! couldn't afford a $70k truck on my best day ever...
Ditto everything you said, first time watcher, too.
Great job on this truck. The oil change and fluid levels check at the beginning of a 3000 mile drive gave this truck a chance to "blow everything out" of the engine. The complete fluids and filter service at home, plus other maintenance, is what people should do or have done when they buy a pre-owned vehicle. Of course, they need to have a pre-purchase inspection (PPI), but you seem to be able to fix anything :). You set a great example for people and their vehicles. THANK YOU!
I dont even know what he’s talking about with all these mechanical stuff but i’m binge watching- just love watching him explain it 😂
I love that you don’t stretch out projects like this into 20 videos. You’re my favorite automotive channel by a mile! Please do an update on your Liebherr excavator. My 5 year old son is obsessed with it and won’t stop asking.
While in certain instances, multiple videos have their place, I agree about not stretching things out for this type of work.
Just to add my voice to the chorus of cheers. I appreciate the editing, you cut out the repetitive, and focused on the important stuff. New subscriber!
Love this video just wondering if you could do a price breakdown?
You may like @M539 Restorations channel, too.
Caught ur channel by accident, and glad I did. Watching you work was a reminder of how common sense and an easy attitude gets the job done more often than not. And you seem like a pretty capable mechanic too…nice job
As a fellow New Englander myself, it's nothing short of astounding to see one of these mid 2000s Silverados in such immaculate, rust-free condition.
I am also a New Englander and thought the same thing! my 2015 Fiesta ST has rust on every damn door, hood and hatch at the edges. poop
I just found your channel 2 weeks ago, and already hooked, reel me in. So impressed with your profound knowledge of anything on wheels, and the short-n-sweet explanations. You're a superb narrator with easy to understand "how to." Keep 'em comin' my friend👍✌️
I love all of your videos Waldo. These purchase videos are really cool. Seeing you go through them is a lot of fun. I think this will be a great truck for dad and I wish him many trouble free years with it.
Thanks Pete!

Doing maintenance right is the cheapest thing you can do to your vehicle. Your running description of what you're doing and why you are doing is spot on Good job!!!
When checking ball joints on a truck with torsion bars, you need to set the truck on the ground and use a floor jack under the control arm . Use a medium pry bar to check for movement. I have been a mechanic for 20 years and a shop owner for the last 10 years.I also specialize in suspension and alignments. You got a great deal on that truck. Congrats
Beautiful truck. I have the 1500 version of a 2004 Silverado with the 5.3. Bought it from the original owner about two years ago. It’s about to hit 100k. California truck, no rust. It’s a great truck. I picked it up for about 12k. Much better than paying 50k for a new model.
I have a 2002 1500 LS just turned over 212.000 miles. purrs like a kitten 4.8
Great trucks. I'm a Ford guy and even I have to tip my hat to that era GM trucks. Ford decided the triton engine was the way to compete🤦♂️ luckily they made good diesels.
I bought a black 03 1500 Z71 with 265k and a much nicer BOSS hood for $2000. Needed a bit of cleaning and TLC buts runs and look great. PO didn't know the market and made a quick deal but was really kicking himself when I later picked it up.
Yeah those are great trucks with 5.3 before they started the cylinder deactivation garbage.
Love the GMT800s and 400s both! I have 2-2500hds: 1 with 8.1 and 1 with 6.0. Hoping to keep them going for a long time. Theyre so much more reliable than the new expensive junk.
That ain't no joke. His old man better hang on to this one and take care of it. Easy peasy to work on.
These were considered new expensive junk back then aswell..lol I still drive my 2000 k2500 but I also have a 2021 duramax and it's been perfect @74k miles now
@@squish2913tbf I think a big complaint on newer vehicles is how hard they are to work on/maintain without expensive equipment. Or in some instances just impossible without speciality tools for a single use.
I have 2 gmt800 and 400 with 400k still going
I was sent to this channel as I'm learning about new small trucks. OH MY GOD, you're channel is fantastic. Talk about clear and thorough work and explanation. I have the tools to do everything you just did to that truck, except I don't have a lift to make it easy. I just subscribed and hope to see you do more videos like this one. I'm looking for a truck and you showed me I can afford a used one in decent shape
For the coolant, on the left side of the radiator (from driver position) of these GMT800s there is a hose routed up and a drain petcock. You can pull the hose down and point it at your bucket, open the petcock, and drain your radiator no mess.
Don't you mean right side? Or drivers side?
drivers side @@eaglewarrior8707
@@eaglewarrior8707 No, left side from the driver position. Drivers side in the US.
Yeah, that hose is left side. In automotive speak, left and right expressed as if sitting in drivers seat.
Lol
All great to watch, Waldo! Great way to renovate an auction truck, and smart!
Every time I scroll pass one of your clips...I stay watching...I think you have a Gift in communicating...and your videos are Well edited they don’t just run in boredom. Your knowledge and insight attracts folks that want to learn. Very nicely done, keep it up..wish you much success..😊👍👌
Here's a trick for a more relaxed cross country trip. Next time just skip the Mid/North East traffic/tolls and drive through N.D. thru MN/WI to Suite St. Maire MI, then through Canada Rt 7 to Montreal then drop through VT to NH. . Even though it will add about 80 miles to your trip, you'll save that money in less tolls and piece of mind.
Great suggestion

One of the most thorough and insightful care buying and repair videos I've seen. Preciate your explaining as you went and making things seem so easy and the step by step process in which you did things. Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to your next video.
Love when something like that manifold leak turns out to be next to nothing in repair. I'm impressed with your go thru process, fixing all the things that probably drove the previous owner to get out of it. I do the same and the results are very satisfying.
Thank you for this video. As a "NON-MECHANIC" I appreciate your walk-through of this vehicle. It's good to know the ins and outs of a vehicle before taking for maintenance and repair. I also have a better appreciation for the knowledge, talent, equipment and time it take for a mechanic to provide the service they do. Thank you, I will be looking forward to future videos. NICE JOB!!!!
It really helps when you know what you’re doing. You can do all the work yourself to make that truck even last a whole lot longer. Awesome work.
Great truck Waldo . Dad has a good eye . And welcome back , you've been missed .

Thanks for these great videos Waldo! Camera placements are always spot on and easy to see, explanations of what you’re doing, and how to, are easy to follow. You keep your language kind, and curse free, thank you.
Waldo i enjoy your videos so much, thank you for all your hard work
Always happy to see a new video from you! I'm never disappointed, your calm nature, excellent narration and skills are a real pleasure to watch. Thanks for another fine effort on your Dad's new vehicle. Be well, be safe!
Always very satisfying to watch you fix these cars! Some of the most overlooked maintenance processes are dealt with expertly. Good 👍 Job!!
You’re a great son! Nice reliable truck for your Dad. Thank you for making it easy Tom understand to repair/maintenance process.
Such a great video I always look forward to the Waldo's episodes, the description of the work is explained in layman's terms nothing too complicated.

Man that’s an amazing truck you picked up ! I’m glad to see someone do a gas 3/4 ton ! Excellent video !
This was educational and perfectly explained for those wanting to understand & maintain their vehicles better. Much obliged, good Sir.
Great Video Waldo, we love road trips. That's a great truck for your Dad.
congrats waldo, for the job you did to that pickup! i enjoy it!!!!
Amazing! You are so young and such a good mechanic! I wish more young people learn of to do repairs, most kids I know don’t know how to change a flat tire or basic repairs for their cars or home, women included. All the power to you. Your video is very nice quality and very informative. Thank you. Hope you get lots of likes.
With your last comment about feedback: I really love these types of videos. Buying, diagnosing basic issues (or not so basic issues), and fixing problems efficiently but thoroughly. I also loved your truck bed build for “Brandon” :) Keep up the videos! I (and many others) really enjoy them!
You do excellent work, just not often enough. 😉
Waldo I cannot tell you how much I learn from watching your videos. I am a Land Rover Enthusiast and I was so heartened by your recovery of the Range Rover L322. I own a 2011 L322, with 116,000. It’s in mint condition. As an attorney and not a mechanic, I really appreciate incredibly talented, caring mechanics, like you, who take such pride in their work. Keep up these great videos. Rovers a great vehicles when they are taken care of and your Rover is in great hands. Happy New Year, God Bless and Best to you!
I like your videos especially with projects like this one, your clear and concise description made everything looks easy, I really enjoyed this one
I owned an 06’ that was the same paint and interior. It was a wonderful truck and the only issue was the wheel bearings. It did start to get some lower body rust and with 224k I sold it locally for a very fair price. I happen to run into the owner at the lumberyard a year or so later and he was very happy with it.
I got an 06' bought it about 8 or 9 years ago , I've been through a couple of batteries, changed the oil and filters a few times, changed the brake pads once, other than that, nothing. I can go out, turn the key and it runs like brand new. Oh, 280K miles. Paid $5K cash for it.
Great video Waldo. Never being a mechanic it was interesting watching you check system by system. Top notch video keep up the good work!!

This video just popped into my feed today! I'm not happy that KZhead waited this long to recommend your channel! It's right in the wheelhouse of all of my favorite channels. You are such a joy to watch! So methodical and attentive. I stumbled upon your video, and I love it! Thank you for sharing! Subbed now. Forever follower.
Bravo! One of the best purchase, check over, service videos I’ve ever seen on KZhead. Us rustbelt dwellers (NY) don’t know how good the northwest has it until you buy a car from there. In 2017 I bought a 96 Suburban, 5 winters in it looks like a 5 year old car not a 27 year old. That one was shipped…. the next one I drive. :)
Exactly what I like to do on a new ( used ) vehicle. Change all the fluids ! Love the GMT 800 platform. Great job dude .
Love these videos and always learning something new. The more repairs the better (for us not for you)
Nice job Very clearly presented and shows a tremendous knowledge base. Keep up the good work.
I have never seen anything more informative on vehicle repairs. Great job
Another great video Waldo! Always love your content. I only wish you had a film/editing crew so you could put out more videos in less time and show us all the cool projects you get to work on. So jealous too btw.
Waldo, I really like how calm you are throughout the entire process. If I were doing something like this, I would have had the luck to break at least three of the four hub retaining bolts, needed a 1” pneumatic air hammer to remove the axel shaft nut, wedges to remove it off the spline, 10# hammer to remove the upper ball joint, snapped a spark plug or two and all of it would have needed torches to expand the rust. Other than that, thank you for showing me that there is a way to get help and that is by watching your videos. Thank you, 🤠👍
You inspired me to fix my own window (2008 Impala) after watching this video, Thank you! Oh and TY for the Auction info!!! Keep up the great work!
Excellent video! My first Silverado was a 2500HD and the one thing I didn't like about it was that I purchased one with an 8ft bed!! A little bit of a nightmare to find parking spots BUT you could fit entire sheets of plywood and drywall in the bed! BONUS!!
You make working on cars/trucks look so easy...and I'm here "struggling" changing motor oil. Anyway, love your high quality video as always!

First time finding this channel and I’m glad it was a Chevy truck purchase and maintenance done as well 😎👌🏼 your work was greatly appreciated and worth the watch, nicely done
This was probably the best video of its kind I have ever watched! Thanks for undertaking all the jobs that are so commonly required and explaining them by stage that builds confidence in the viewer.
I bought one of these older GM trucks for dirt cheap with a bit of body rust but solid frame, fully loaded leather with 130k miles and they are a great mix of old-school simplicity and modern features!
Great video, nice to see a young guy so level headed and knowledgeable
Your truck is ideal, and we'll care for. You're always teaching me something new, thanks.
Waldo this is the first of your videos I have seen! Outstanding job on getting the truck back home and getting it back in great shape! I went ahead and subscribed and will have to watch your other videos! I live in Eastern Washington and cars & trucks from here are fairly rust free compared to other parts of the Northwest! A few years back I bought a 69 RS Camaro that had sat under a carport for maybe 25 years with a bad timing chain. Anyhow it only had a few pinholes on the left side under the rear window otherwise very solid. You will not see that on a 69 Camaro from Western Washington! Thanks for the great content!
What a great find. Easy fixes and no rust.
You a real car guru..I honestly enjoyed watching you fix every part lol
Thank you so much for this content. Truly outstanding. Subscribed!
This was a great video! You really put in a lot of relevant content very compactly and efficiently. I have a 2003 GMC C1500 Sierra, so yours was a close enough cousin. Your dad is lucky to get such a creampuff of a truck, and so properly serviced, as well. I used to buy new trucks frequently for my job, back when they were reasonable, and I drove a lot. Things have changed a lot in the past few years.
As a first time viewer and retired auto tech, I really appreciate you and your channel. Your honesty, personality , thoroughness, knowledge and attitude toward maintenance and economical fixes are refreshing. One thing I would suggest, when checking ball joints, it is needed to "unload" the ball joints. Meaning, when the wheels are off the ground, most "long-arm short-arm" control arm setups fully extended and the suspension travel stops when the upper control arm compresses the rubber (I'll call) "top out" bumper(as opposed the "bottom out" rubber bumper. Otherwise, the torsion bar in, this case, is forcing the control arms into a "loaded" position. Your channellocks will not overcome the pressure of the torsion bar . Hope that makes sense. Please continue the great channel!!!!
I started watching your channel yesterday and have really learned a lot from you especially the welding, so I like your channel a lot
A pleasure to watch this, great stuff and good to see you back😊

This was a really awesome video. It was beginning to end and everything was comprehensive. You are my favourite KZheadr, very happy to have discovered you. I have a 2003 L322 RR, similar to yours which is why I love that playlist, but seeing the engine bay and the work you did on this just made me want an old American truck. We don’t have many in New Zealand and what we do have is Left hand drive lol.
Excellent content. I enjoy seeing the repair and maintenance process in one video. I also enjoy the straight forward repair instead of click bait antics like some other automotive content producers.
PLEASE HAVE THIS TRUCK UNDERCOATED!!!! Also have the inner parts of the panels rust protected.
We definitely will! If not it'll end up just as rusty as all the other buckets of junk around here 👍
Enjoy your vids. Thanks for the auction link!
The quality of your videos is outstanding. The effort you put into converting all the number for us non Americans is so very much appreciated
I loved this episode. There’s something incredibly pleasing and satisfying about working on an older vehicle that is in nice condition underneath. No struggling with rusted bolts etc. Unfortunately that’s rare here in the UK as the first sign of colder weather and the salt gritter trucks are out! I now use something called Lanoguard, which is a natural underseal that uses the oils from sheep fleece. Much nicer to use than the traditional black underseal!
I'm doing my trucks now in preparation for winter, although we don't use salt, a nice pressure washing and a coat of Amsoil MP
Thats good stuff, I use it on the plow at work. Called Fluid Film in the US for anyone looking.
Waldo is back!!! Hope you all did not have any flooding while back, in NC we had poor air quality due to the Canadian forest fires. Last week we had a heat wave, 94-96f everyday. Nice truck for your Dad. Being pulled over was not fun. Make more videos!!
Nope, we escaped the flooding 👍
Your procedure for a new to you vehicle is the same one I was taught to do from a teenager. It's amazing what you will find sometimes with just a simple once over.
I just subscribed, and I'm a restorer of Land Rovers, but many other classics for 35 years. The fact that you have a Vizsla, reaffirms the obvious, you're a sharp man! We have Vizslas for years. Your channel will easily grow hugely !
I've owned several of these trucks. They are gmt800 trucks. There are absolutely great trucks. I have got 300k plus out of every one with very little money put into them. I think they are the best trucks gm has ever produced. The duramax 5.3 and the 6.0 are all great engines. Its best to stick with the 2500 and 3500 versions.
