How To Install Windows XP In Virtual Box - 2024
This is an updated video on my popular "How To Install Windows XP In Virtual Box" tutorial.
Update October 23, 2022:
There has been an update to virtual box which has changed a few minor things:
First you need to select this ISO image when creating a new virtual machine (In the same Windows where you name your VM) or you can add it later in the virtual machine settings then selecting storage and adding the ISO file to the optical drive.
Also make sure that "Skip Unattended Installation" is checked.

Update April 30, 2023: There seems to be a new bug where after you install Guest Additons you'll get a black screen. To fix this shut down your VM, open your VM settings, then click on display and set the graphics controller to a different one. Try each one and see if you can get it to work again. You also might want to try turning off 3D Acceleration. Update October 23, 2022: There has been an update to virtual box which has changed a few minor things: First you need to select this ISO image when creating a new virtual machine (In the same Windows where you name your VM) or you can add it later in the virtual machine settings > storage and adding the ISO file to the optical drive. Also make sure that "Skip Unattended Installation" is checked. Moreover, you are having trouble downloading Firefox on XP, download it on your host machine and use Shared folders to transfer the installer to your VM. Here is a tutorial I made on shared folders: kzhead.info/sun/eb2mk89pfmKcpJE/bejne.html

I have been trying to do this for 3 years now, every guide I followed skipped over how to enable virtualization. You helped me do the thing I have been trying to do for Three. Years. Thank you SO MUCH
Thank you! That was a masterful tutorial. Very clear, no chattering. No bad loud music. Great job!
where did you find the download

I could never have done this without your tutorial. I played my favorite game as a kid and got all the nostalgia feelings. Thank you so much!
Do you have to install any graphic driver to run games on a virtual machine? I want to play Heavy Gear.
Pinball 3D?
WARLORDS BATTLECRY!
I love American Conquest. I would definitely do it again!
Imagine if I was born in 2007 then I would have a Windows XP computer for me to have.
Thanks for the tutorial! Now I can play my old childhood computer games. I wasn't sure I'd ever get to play Magic School Bus, Thinking Things, or Roller Coaster Tycoon again. Thank you!
Short, concise and to the point. Masterful tutorial!!!!
Great and clear tutorial. Worked flawlessly and easy-to-follow instructions.
I just used this to set up a VM on my computer and everything worked as you described when the added info is included. I did have a problem with loading Firefox, but your suggestion of a shared directory worked a treat. Thank-you for such a good tutorial.
Thank you. Straightforward and easy to follow instructions, even with the updated VM.
Commenting from the virtual machine! Sweet and simple tutorial ! Subscribed!
wow epic
Thank you for this tutorial. Really good video and easy to follow!
This is the best video on KZhead regarding this topic and the only one that warns the user about Windows XP!
Thank you so much! I wanted to have a Windows XP VM and I finally got it thanks to you!!! :) This is very helpful.
Outstanding tutorial - followed it step-by-step and it went flawlessly.
did you download it?
@@didyouseemybag7439 It's been a year, but yeah, just followed his steps and his download links in the description
my xp is aborting do you know why?
Sweet! The serial in the description didn't work for me. I used this one from the comments in the archive site: MRX3F-47B9T-2487J-KWKMF-RPWBY
Thanks,this actually works
Thanks ❤
Thanks that was so hard the first time
Thanks
It DOESN'T works😢
Seeing my childhood OS again makes me happy thanks man ❤
Incredibly knowledgeable and we'll-spoken teacher. Nice tutorials comfortableness with the subject makes starting soft real exciting!!
Many thanks for this well designed tutorial! Question: Do I have to install a fresh version of XP from a downloaded install ISO, or can I use an already existing install that has a lot of my software on it? If I have to install fresh, can I simply copy my registry and windows dlls and so forth from my pre-existing install that has so much software on it? Or do I have to reinstall the software and import my files?
Thank you! Old Windows XP on my computer! 2007-2022
this is awesome and it installed windows xp flawlessly, tysm for this tutorial! i love windows XP
Everyting works great, had a little problem with a web browser but an additional video about shared folders fixed it. Thanks!
what's the video
For me, copying the link for Firefox into the VM was of no use, since Internet Explorer wouldn’t load the page anyway. What did work was creating a folder on my Host, in which I put the installer for Firefox and then making it a shared folder to access the file in the VM
For any one struggling with file sharing or copy and pasting the Firefox link you can just as easily enable drag and drop to move the file after you have extracted it on your host system/
Best tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you very much.
Thanks so much! Everything, including product key worked!
HEADS UP for anyone who boots into a black screen after installing guest additions!! i had this same issue too, the solution i found online that seems to work for me is to change the VGA adapter to VMSVGA. you can do this by closing out of the virtual box (shutting the machine down), and then clicking settings. you then want to click "display," and then next to "graphics controller" is a drop down menu, from which you can select VMSVGA
it started working, but now I am unable to make it full screen. i changed the display settings inside the VM to be close to full screen, but having 1920*1080 would be better. do you know why? thanks in advance
Legend. also to reply to mark try setting the video memory as high as it will go.
@@badbob9nine282 it's working properly now, thanks man!
Thank you bro!
Awesome video! covers all the steps in a clear and concise manner. one question: How would I send files from my host OS to the VM? for example to install an old game? Thanks again for this tutorial!
Go into one of the setting on the top and look for something that says about host to guest.
Go to settings after that I think you click a folder option once you do that click the green plus with a folder on the right and click on your folder you want to share
Bro I just subscribed you come up with every thing that can go wrong like even the Firefox installer it gives me a error that it won't load so you also made a tutorial for shared folders in order to get it fixed thank you so much
12/13/2023 Thanks for your video. The instruction was excellent. Some views I got during the process were different that on your vid, but kept moving ahead. Your firefox link didn't work in the Virtual XP, but I read a lot of comments and someone mentioned Shared Folders and used that to drag and drop the file. Worked great!
Along with that black screen bug, I couldn't for the life of me get widescreen to work in later VirtualBox versions. Stick to 6.1.32 - It also runs faster from my experience (less choppy mouse movement)
Thanks. I overlooked a few things and this helped a lot!
Thank you so much man! I've always wanted to revisit my childhood OS.
If it hangs when installing virtualbox guest additions then Disable the Network Adapter in XP and it will go through ok
Thank you so much, fixed the hanging install window.
Thank you so much. It WORKED!!!
About time!
This worked instantly - thank you
Worked! Thanks x 1000!

Amazing tutorial! Seriously! Thanks again.
I can't seem to download the virtualbox guest additions. The warnings you get never pops up, and it just stops downloading :(
I haven't found a way to download guest additions yet. But you can right click on the desktop, click properties, go to settings and change screen resolution to 1280 by 1024 pixels (1600 by 1200 pixels hides the start button and taskbar for me for some reason). This will make the screen bigger but its still not full screen. However, you can actually go to scale mode by pressing the host key + C (host key is right ctrl if your on windows). That will let you change the screen resolution as much as you want to make it basically full screen. Just go to the corner of the virtual machine and drag until its fills up the screen. But video quality might be lower than usual.
Same here, it wont install
Turn off the network in XP. Go to network then click on your network and disable it. It will finish the install and you can reenable it afterwards.
@@marshiebuns This worked for me, thank you!!!

Somehow it is stuck on the final oracle VM virtualBox Guest Additions "Excecting "C\program files\Oracle\VirtualBox guest additions\BoxDrvInst.exe"" . I already tried restarting and even install another box with windows xp. Any ideas?

thank you! I already know how to install windows xp, but i just needed files and the tutorial how to get on web on windows xp, thank you very much!
@4:00 new version of this screen (I assume as it's my first time using linux or virtual box) also lets you choose Processor count. Oracle forums seem to recommend that the default value of one (1) is enough except in some circumstances (I couldn't understand what they were, so I assume they're not for me). Ah, you already pinned an update! Thanks.
Leaving it at 1 is fine

thank you for this tutorial
Thanks man, all is well. I have a XP machine up and running now to trouble shoot its problems. Next steps for me is to troubleshoot an application error "this application cannot run with an active debugger in memory." error I am seeing when I try and run The Hobbit. Not your fault, at all, I am running an XP O.S. in a virtual machine, thanks to you.
Hello! I am having problems with the Copy and Paste option that is in Devices. When I go from guest to host, I copy outside the virtual machine and it doesn't appear inside the machine, which doesn't allow me to download FireFox. Although, if I try to put shared files, it doesn't work either. I have tried several times and some possible solutions, but nothing.
Thanks best explanation!
flawless. Thank you
good to know this, thanks. however having black screen after successful installation - shutdown xp and vm, and restart with classic xp startup sound note, i am having just a black screen in Window showing headline of Win XP Tutorial running. No Sart ICon or other pre-installed things showing in XP hood.
I got nostalgia from this. Also got 5 bluescreens while trying to boot the operating system, but got it working after 1 hour trying lmao.
Hi Great effort thank you so much I want to ask how to copy and paste from the original windows to the virtual xp. The past in win xp is gray and cant be used
im not even kidding i just set up a windows xp virtual box and was watching your tutorial. trying to live stream on it now
Thank you. Reminder, First thing you do after a successful install and first boot is to take a snapshot. It will save many many issues.
