5 Pretty villages in Suffolk you must visit
Visiting pretty villages in Suffolk was one of the things we were most looking forward to about our recent trip. Suffolk is a county with so much history and you an see that rich history captured in villages all over the county. We have just 5 pretty villages here but there are so many more we didn't get to, so we'd love to hear your tips for future trips!
Many seem to have escaped the advance of the modern world and retain the feel they must have had for hundreds of years. From a village largely now under the sea, to the birth place of Harry Potter and a ferry which has operated for 700 years!!!
Our journey through 5 pretty villages will hopefully give you a taste of what is on offer in Suffolk, it really is a beautiful county and we'd definitely recommend a trip!
If you enjoy this video please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing! We have lots more content on the way soon!

This video brings back memories when I was stationed at RAF Station Bentwaters (1958 to 1962). The four wonderful years I spent in Suffolk, East Anglia, is where many American service members were stationed during WWII & thereafter. While there I lived in Felixstowe where I still have friends & frequently visited after my military service in England ended.
Hi Don, thanks for watching. We're so pleased it brought back some great memories for you!!
Wow , that is really cool . Electronic music engineer and music producer Brian Eno is from around those parts ... I think the person who mentioned it was confused cuz they said he was from Woodbridge , Melton as if Woodbridge is a section of Melton .
@@MacSarahI never heard of a punch horse ... what an odd name . It would have been nice to know a little bit more about those horses since they are so rare 😮
Cannot be compared with how awful it all is now!
@@gardensofthegods"Punch" horse is actually, real name, The Suffolk Horse but many people came to call the breed the Suffolk Punch.
Aldeburgh and Woodbridge are towns, not villages, sorry. (I am from Suffolk).
Thanks for correcting us and for watching, we appreciate it!
Me too. From Eye, lived in Ipswich and I'll be moving to Lowestoft soon 😊
Swap those towns for Stoke-by-Clare and Bildeston.
…or Boxford…or Stoke by Nayland.
7:00 -7:07 thought these houses only existed in America/Canada/Scandinavia. Interesting and such a pretty place.
Yes there's some very interesting and varied architecture in the area. Thanks for watching!
Loved the vlog, heading to Suffolk next weekend and will definitely be using your suggestions. Thanks both!!❤
Ah that's wonderful, thanks David! Hope you have a great time 👍
Am I imagining it, or does Suffolk have the most enormous skies. Whenever I see it on TV it seems to have a sky that goes on forever. It's magnificent but is it clever camera work or do you Suffolk natives gaze at that wonder for free?
It kinda does have that feel somehow... It's a beautiful county
East Anglia is known for its big skies. Its not a camera trick PS I'm Suffolk born and bred
Can't mention Dunwich without mentioning the Dunwich Dynamo, the annual bicycle pilgrimage from London Fields in Hackney to Dunwich Beach. It's a crazy wacky ride through the night on any kind of bike you like and best of all it's free and open to anyone.
Ahh that sounds fantastic!! Thanks for leaving this in the comments so everyone can read it 😀
The pink houses use Suffolk Pink, a mixture of plaster and blood (I kid you not; it’s animal blood).
Now that's something we didn't know!
Lavenham has a teddy bear shop. The most dangerous things there are the very elderly ramblers, who tend to ramble across the road. I live in Suffolk.
Oh goodness, I hope they don't get run over lol
Hey Mac and Sarah!! I love the lavenhum place!! I had no idea it was used for Harry Potter!! I’m a HUGE potter fan!! You captured it so so well!! Man look at that line for the fish n chip shop it must be good!!! So colourful too!! :) I miss seeing all the cute towns in England hopfully I’ll be back soon enough!! Great video and well put together :)
Hey, how are you? Thanks so much for watching and commenting!! Tbh before we planned our trip to Suffolk we also had no idea rhst Lavenham was used in Harry Potter, but we're gona watch carefully next time we watch it 😅 we really hope you get to come and explore again soon! All the best ❤️
@@MacSarah Check out the 'Lovejoy' series!
The fish and chip shops used to be the best in the area. But greed has taken over. The queues are long with hungry tourists getting overcharged for mediocre miniscule portions. They don't care because there'll be another load of tourists to sting the next day!... I've been going here since the 70s. I've seen the transition. \If you want the truth ask a local if you can find one. They can't afford to buy in the town they grew up in because of hoity toity types with more money than sense buying the properties for holiday homes they use 1-2 weeks a year.
Lanenham's Guild Hall was also used for Stanley Kubrick's wonderful and atmospheric 1975 film, Barry Lyndon, starring Ryan O'Neal.
I also reccomend visiting Needham Market! Its a nice place.
Ooh thanks for the recommendation! And thanks for watching
Another film that featured Lavenham was The Witchfinder General in which the town center I believe was used in a witch burning scene. The film was shot in parts of Suffolk and Norfolk in the late 60s. Lavenham is one of those places I've never been to but I would love to visit. I love most of those medieval houses there.
It's such a great place to visit and it clearly has a lot of appeal for film makers 😊 thanks for watching!
I live at lavenham it's good and the school is so nice and old it is old and historic

@@MacSarah we would absolutely love that!!
Great stuff loved it
Thanks Michael 😀👍🏼
Really great vlog, just visited Dunwich because of your vlog. It was a lovely day out, so thank you for the help.
Oh that's wonderful to hear, thank you so much for letting us know! That really makes us happy 🙂
Great video! A lot of information and nice footage. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanls so much for watching and for the lovely feedback! We hope it's been useful. Are you planning a visit to the area?
@@MacSarah We've recently been to Lavenham. It's marvelous! Unfortunately, it was Monday and historic buildings are closed. But anyway the walk through is enough for getting impressed :)
Very interesting, lovely video!
Thaks very much
Ahh I used to love crabbing off the pontoons in Cornwall. Almost no zombies? 😂 Wow the Guildhall is fascinating. So much history. Ooh We watched the dig! That was so interesting. 🖤
We've never actually been crabbing but they do it in our home town too, maybe we should give it a go 😊
Great work guys❤
Thank you 😀
Youve given me some lovely ideas for places to visit.Great share thankyou.Have an awesome weekend 🙂👍
Oh that's wonderful, thank you! We hope you enjoy your visit, Suffolk is a beautiful county. Thanks for watching and for saying hi x
@@MacSarah Look forward to watching more , please have a look at my little channel also if you get time 🙂
I lived in Hadleigh & Kersey late 70's - perhaps you've since visited these places? Anyway, good video 👍😊
Ah very nice! To he honest we haven't had a chance to go back to Suffolk yet but would really love to. Thanks for watching 🙂
@@MacSarah I see, thanks!
Another really interesting vlog. We might do some of the spots once life is more back to normal (travelling to and from UK is still a pain)
Yes, fingers cross for some normality to travel huh? Thanks so watching, glad you enjoyed it!!
The reason for so many medieval houses still seen in Lavenham is because it was once a centre for wealthy wool merchants, when wool was of prime importance. When this started to fade and the rich moved away ,the people left were too poor to do as other places and pull down and rebuild in a more modern fashion , so they stayed in the existing ones . Of course, it`s to our benefit now ,as in the UK such places are prised and preserved.
Oh that's so interesting, thanks Gill. We've been to lots of places where older buildings have made way for newer and in fact materials reused, so it is wonderful to find the original buildings still standing. Thanks for watching
merci beaucoup pour ces vues magnifiques ....j ai eu la chance de visiter Norwich beccles bungay souhaite retourner...
Thank you for watching! We're so pleased you enjoyed it xx
Great video showing some of the beauties of my home county. Just a note: you pronounced the name of the River Deben wrong, it’s said “dee-ben” with a long e sound in the first syllable, not “debben” like Debbie!
Hi Kirstie! Your home country is stunning, we love it. And thanks for the heads up on our fopar! 😀 Thank you for watching and reaching out to say hi 🙏
Nice video. By the way the river in Woodbridge is pronounced Dee-Ben with an ee not an e.
Ah thanks for the correction 😊 sometimes tricky to know what's right. Thanks for watching
Sorry if this has already been commented on but the River Deben is pronounced Dee-ben
Haha thank you 🙏 yes another viewer picked us up on it. Thanks for watching
Would anyone happen to know please, which of these places would be closest to ipswich?
Gods own county
Darn right!
Will be posting up here soon. Ok I get pint
Hope you enjoy your visit!
Kersey and Boxford?
Ah haven't visited either but thanks for the suggestions!
Have anyone visited,Holton St Peters???
You had me till you mentioned that Potter ubiquity. Is there nowhere we can escape from it?
Thanks for watching. I guess being such a popular movie franchise, wanting to use historic locations, were bound to stumble across places they've used a lot.
21st Century Suffolk.
We enjoyed visiting
Good.
Since 1236 that old
Old! 🙂
Thorpness isn’t a village but a holiday resort.
Well it's a lovely place all the same x
We would like to visit Suffolk in our Motorhome. Can you park in those villages/ Towns
Ooh good question. So in most I think you'd be OK. Southwold you'd have to arrive early and get a space either just out of town or in thecar Park by the pier. Stay away from the town, just to small and busy. Also, Walberswick would be OK if you can get there early and get a spot in the car park. Good luck, it's a great place for a motorhome tour 👍🏼
You can park a motorhome free on the riverside at Bawdsey! We spent crimbo there. Rendlesham forest (near the UFO landing site) is open in summer months and a good place to explore from.

Hello Amy
I have a Hardback DORLING KINDERSLEY DK EYEWITNESS GUIDES Book of MEDIEVAL LIFE. Discover medieval Europe - from life in a country manor to the streets of a developing town.
Please be aware of adders in certain areas of Suffolk.
Thank for the tip 👍🏼
Boss town and Thetford but recently ruined with the polish and Portuguese influx and their love for bevying on street corners. Two worlds colide or just dreadful political leadership?
More to come..
Thanks for watching
It's all gone to sh*t.
Aldeburgh is a town town not a village!!! Get it right!!!
A technicality I reckon, it's still a gorgeous place, but thanks for pulling us up on it
I'm Ipswich born & bred, now living in the peak district. Just a slight wrong pronunciation? The river in Woodbridge is pronounced as Deeben, although spelt Deben. Please don't pronounce it the way you do, it sounds stupid!!
Well, please forgive us for sounding stupid
Forgiven. @@MacSarah
I find this so boring,Lavenden, never watch, what was his name, this boring program,O Yes??? Gee,what was this famous name!!!
This is all complete nonsense! None of these villages are "pretty" any more, just ruined by flashy cars and tourists everywhere. They were delightful 50 years ago, but those days are long gone. The "pretty" unspoilt villages no-one knows about thank God; and they are a good way away from those you mention.
Sorry you feel that way Simon, but thanks for watching and giving us your feedback anyway. All the best
You forgot to mention the 'LOVEJOY' series with Ian McShane put Lavenham on the map in the 80's. Most of it was filmed in Suffolk with Lavenham being one of the more frequently villages.
Oooh that's a blast from the past! Didn't realise it was filmed there 😀 thanks so much!
It was mostly filmed in Finchingfield, Essex and in Long Melford. The snooker club in Great Dunmow was used as well.
the recording of barking dogs is not really appreciated
Those pesky dogs
