  • I like all the symbolism, especially with rage when he blindly charges towards anything that moves and ends up destroying himself in the end. No salvation for him, only wanton destruction to the very end.

  • I feel like some of these 'personified horrors of war' are actually also based on people they knew (the 'Pain' boss very much feels like Johannes, especially when we see him during the outro section with the same disfigurement, plus the art and bird symbolism for both, whereas Despair could have been the Mother. Unsure which one may have been the 'Father' but it would make sense, that the horrors that manifest are inspired by those who were caught in the crossfire of the hells of war

The original audio was actually recorded in German with authentic accents, but when it came to translating the dialogue into English, they probably just used British accents out of simplistically and kept all the French dialogue the same as there was no necessity to change it. But yeah, I agree it would be nicer if the German characters had their original accents.

    • Its "The Father" try to dealt with his own guilt. For the demise of his whole company to the disfigurment and permanant injury his son "Johannes" suffer due to the encouragement to join "The Great War" (Possibly by the father who's an officier). All the bosses str representation of his own suffering inflicted on the experience from the war. The ending, I think is that he finally make peace with everything and accept the constant state of his still "alive" family. His own father, His wife and his own son.

    • @@FragileBitchyou're actually wrong about the characters. You're not playing the father. You're playing as the younger son Paul. He has PTSD and survivors guilt because he was in charged of the whole squad that got kill except for his brother Johannes. You were also a prisoner of war and was captured by the French. The only reason u went to the war was to live up to your prideful nationalist father and be a man. That's why all the soldiers were making fun of him for being small(Paul was only 19)

    • All of the family forgave each other for their wrongs, the story is Paul journeying to help all of the family and himself forgive each other for their transgressions against each member of the family. The bosses that you fight are all members of your family. The monster in the swamp is your mother, the saboteur is your father, and the bird is Johannes. The war is a backdrop for Paul to help the family heal and forgive each other. The manor section is the real part, but sometimes the officer (who is a reflection of Paul’s patriotic and national duty convictions) tries to get Paul to come back and finish his “mission” which leads to the family doubling down on not forgiving each other and Paul becoming more convinced that what he did was right and that his mother and brother are both wrong for multiple reasons. The whole story is set around the injury of Johannes who is thrown into barbed wire and Paul abandons him for one reason or another.
