    • What a beautiful baby. Seems as I get older my heart is always there for animals. Love the video When I use to surf in Santa Cruz Cali we always had seals surfing right along side of us on the waves, It was awesome Than maybe 20 ft away the Whales would migrate north. Man what a feeling of sight to see hear smell and the surprise made it all worthwhile. Ahhh the memories.

    • The "witness" in the warning is us. The pup has a dangerous mother, may be carrying disease, etc., doesn't know not to bite, etc. Additionally, it's a distraction in a harsh environment. The warning is not for the animal. It's going to behave by instinct & sometimes instinct leads to trouble. Instinct is telling it to approach this person....or they're attracting it in some other way. That's why it's approaching; it doesn't know any better. If you know the history of baby seals' interaction with humans, that would be danger's Exhibit A.

    • That's environmentalists trying to convey an idea in a way palatable to small children. The real reason you don't pet these is because they're not domesticated and only *look* cute, while in reality it's like being approached by a wolf in the forest. It might be okay getting petted, it also might take it as provocation and tear a chunk out of your leg, really depends on the mood.

  • What's extremely cute about this to me, is the real possibility that the cameraman's face was covered entirely to be shielded from the cold wind. Meaning this baby seal didn't even need to see a face, he just saw a friend-like shape and made his way over 😭❤️

  • What a dilemma. You don’t want to inure the baby seal to human interaction, but you desperately want to reach out and cuddle it.

    • I am pretty sure that this is a Weddell seal, in Antarctica. They are not gonna get inured to human interaction *per se*, not like animals that live in places with a regular human population might get. They are also VERY illegal to touch!!!!! I have mostly seen scientists studying these seals be the ones to film them like this, and they have special dispensation in order to tag them (I THINK), but even they are not allowed to touch the seals except precisely what they need to do their jobs, and nothing else. The baby seals are REAL CURIOUS, though, so it's apparently very normal for them to get up real close and personal. They have no sense of personal space XD Same with elephant seal babies. You're apparently just supposed to let them climb you and poke at you and lie on you, but not touch them *back*... XD

    • 1. Try surviving in the Arctic Circle without hunting any edible animal you can find. Indigenous arctic cultures rely on hunting and fishing; it’s not like you can plant a field of corn up there. The terrain is among the harshest on earth 2. Technically, no one clubs these animals. Weddell seals are from the Antarctic, you’re thinking of something like harp seals in the Arctic

    • Well, if this is an Antarctic seal (such as a Weddell seal), then the water is likely significantly warmer than the air temperature. Ocean temps rarely drop below 20 degrees F, but the air temperature in Antarctica can easily be -50 degrees F in the winter and, even in the summer, it's rarely warmer than -20 F. That water probably feels like a Jacuzzi to the seal. :)

  • My cat Cody was watching the baby seal come close. Even the cute baby sounds got my cat Cody staring. Then as soon as the baby seal 🦭moved off camera view I would see him looking downward wondering where the baby seal went lol I love seals. They got truly the cutest sounds ever! :)

  • I never understood how anyone could fawn and cry over the looks of an animal, and then I saw this thing. I get it now. Nothing has any business being this cute and it has crossed over the threshold of my high tolerance to cuteness. I want to protect it at all costs. I need that animal and I feel physical pain knowing I can never allow myself to touch one for the sake of its safety.

    • Go online and join an animal rescue. Ask for a pregnant dog or cat, they get put down in shelters because they don't have the ability to keep the mama and babies together for 8-12 wks as is necessary. They always need ppl to take them in. Do it while you are weak to cuteness! ❤ You will be blessed with 1000 ooey gooey moments.

It was also about the slaughter of seals and the scene that sticks with me most was a seal still alive and moving after being skinned. It was horrible, and I wasn't a child but in my early 20s

    • They are adorable - and I don't mean any disrespect - but hunting isn't necessarily a bad or inhumane thing. Done properly, the animal suffers less than it would from a natural death. There are people who rely on hunting for both their sustenance and income. The meat they eat, and the pelts which they do not keep are sold (almost everyone in the world needs money to simply survive). The pelts do not fetch a high price. It can be a hard life, in far-northern climates, and anti-seal hunting legislation has made many indigenous peoples' lives much harder.

    • I am so intrigued by animal communication, I would be trying like crazy to figure out if the little pudge was hungry or was looking for mama.
