If you want to know what is involved in fitting spring lifts and bigger tyres to a Freelander1 then check this video. I fit a 40mm Lift kit, with camber adjusting bolts and a set of bigger tyres, one of the biggest you can fit without spacers.
Another video also shows fitting rock sliders which are shown briefly at the end: • Fitting Rock Sliders -...
The MuddyMods lift kit I fitted, with camber bolts is available on eBay UK here: ebay.us/bCWX6r
The Rock Sliders are sometimes on eBay UK being sold by muddymods and others Here:

If you also have to renew the rear brakes, here are the bits I got cheaply on eBay UK:

The tyres (tires!) I fitted were Kumho MT51 225/70 R17 which you can get for around £100 each. They have good reviews and are the largest diameter you can fit without spacers. A lift is also not essential.

  • Informative video and great looking freelander, I have the Freelander 1, 2003 V6, 3 door and have just fitted 225/65/R17 Maxxis AT's without any lift and no rubbing whatsoever if anyone is interested. Cheers

  • Lifted my Freelander v6 50mm back in 2006. Fitted a rollcage too along with Sparco bucket seats and 4 point harnesses, M-Sport carbon fibre raised air intake and under body protection, plus M-Sport Oz racing wheels and braided brake hoses and a stainless modified exhaust system. Never saw another modded Freelander on the roads back then. Lift was supplied and fitted by FreelanderStorm, the bespoke rollcage was supplied and fitted by Dave Billings at Tornado Motorsport. Got a pic of it at the Billing Land Rover show in Land Rover Owner International and LRM magazines. Despite owning loads of Land Rovers over the years, I got nothing but the cold shoulder at the show as it was seen as a "hairdressers car" and "Not a real Land Rover". Modded a Td4 too with the same sort of stuff. but also fitted 205/80/16 bronco Diamondback tyres, plus some equally stupid MT tyres on a spare set of rims. This was well before the Freelander Challenge made doing these mods popular. Sold that in 2017. I own a Freelander 2 i6. Lifted with a MuddyMods kit and also fitted with a raised air intake and under body guards..

    • Love the v6 engine. I like the freelander because it’s seen as the ‘under dog’ in LR cycles. It’ a cliche to support the under dog. Great to see what you can do with them and it rides better than the old ladder frames ones.

  • Back in 2007 I had a V6, with 50mm lift, 205/80/16 Bronco Diamondback tyres, 30mm spacers, internal roll cage and Cobra bucket seats and harnesses. I also fitted it with a 2004 full facelift front and rear. The rollcage was custom made by Dave Billings of Tornado Motorsport. I then had a Td4 which I built to the same spec but with a bolt in Safety Devices cage. Eventually I bought Dave's original Freelander he built with a full customised cage that went through the cab, in to the engine bay and formed the strut mounts. It was also fitted with Fox coilovers. The V6 ended up racing with the Help for Heroes team. There's plenty of pictures floating around the internet . Reg X622FRP.

  • Excellent video... I did the 50mm lift a few weeks back and there were no videos up then... so this is a good video to have... one tip id add is that if you carfully cut the rear strut bracket that holds the break pipe. you can avoid all the hassle with the rear breaks..As the strut comes straight out.. Cut and bend... then bend back when done.. and for anyone wanting to do the 50mm.... dont.... Just stick with the 40mm. The extra 10mm is not worth the extra hassle involved. Keep up the good work mate... Ive watched all your freelander videos, and learnt so much.. definatly a help....

I also found it killed the front half shafts. I think 40mm is the max that you should go. If your interested I made a thread about it in Landyzone.

Do you have any problem with a sloppy gear linkage ? I have done some research and found 2 types. One is cheap nylon bushes , and the other is a brace effect. That is mine . It is sometimes and going to tackle in next few weeks when weather improves . Just wondered if it something you had noticed on yours ? 👍👏🏻

    • No but I didn’t use spacers, no need and may make a touch of the outer edge on the wheel arch more likely.. I did trim a bit of surround plastic however to make it look better and give more safety margin. Post some pics when you get it done, I would be interested to see it.

  • Hi I needed to have a more aggressive tyre because I own some land and was continually getting stuck in the mud I could get out the car and watch all four wheels turning in the muddy slush I found by just going wider from 225 to 235 I could buy General Graber AT tyres Ever since than I've had no more getting stuck and have been very impressed. Like to point out that I didn't want to buy 16"wheels to take higher side walls If you don't want all that mechanical work 235/55/17 will do the job very well

    • Greetings. I did some calculations working out the different tyre sizes. The first is the tyre shown in this video, which just about fits with a bit of plastic trimming for extra safety margin on the clearance. No spacers on original alloys, lift or not doesn't make much difference. The last column is the tyre size (diameter) in inches, so 29.4 inches: 225 70 17 29.40.

    • Your choice. You need to find one you can trust to do it all properly and pay a considerable fee for all the labour involved. Check they have done a full wheel alignment and that the steering arms don’t catch when the car is jacked up and on full lock.
