Timothy Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad) is an English academic, theologian and Islamic scholar who is a proponent of Islamic neo-traditionalism. His work includes publications on Islamic theology, modernity, and Anglo-Muslim relations, and he has translated several Islamic texts.
He is the Founder and Dean of the Cambridge Muslim College, Aziz Foundation Professor of Islamic Studies at both Cambridge Muslim College and Ebrahim College, Director of Studies (Theology and Religious Studies) at Wolfson College and the Shaykh Zayed Lecturer of Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Divinity at University of Cambridge.

About flying saucer , by sentence 16/8(Alquran) mention as unknown vehicle by human being during thousands of year, and by sentence 43/12(Alquran) mention everything is in pair that is positive part and negative part of that flying saucer. Because thi sentence 43/12(Alquran) talking about vehicle hence it is of course "in pair" is vehicle also and that vehicle not other than flying saucer with positive part and negative part. وَالْخَيْلَ وَالْبِغَالَ وَالْحَمِيرَ لِتَرْكَبُوهَا وَزِينَةً وَيَخْلُقُ مَا لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ 16/8.And horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and use for show; and HE was created other things of which you have knowledge This 16/8 sentence explain vehicle which was usually using by human being, it is of course matter that not yet known is vehicle also. If donkeys and horse is vehicle in the form of pull and push force hence the same situation likes aeroplane and car as carrier. Whether donkeys and horse and car and aeroplane using momentum force to move forward, thats why both vehicle has the same idea. And what is the unknown vehicle in sentence 16/8(Alquran) ? The answered by Alquran is: وَالَّذِي خَلَقَ الْأَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الْفُلْكِ وَالْأَنْعَامِ مَا تَرْكَبُونَ 43/12. And HE has created everything in pairs. And HE has made for you which you ride from adrift object and livestock. لِتَسْتَوُوا عَلَى ظُهُورِهِ ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ إِذَا اسْتَوَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَتَقُولُوا سُبْحانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ 43/13. So that you reside in above its back, then you will think of to enjoy your God when you reside on it and you say "Glory to HIM who circularizing this for us and we are not in one generation. وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ 43/14. And we are people to return to our God. If people read this Holy Sentence formation can not found somethings new, but should realize that every Holy sentence is usefull and all interconnected. comprehended Holy Sentence formation above this hence " adrift object " what written on it is vehicle which not yet known at that sentence 16/8. that Holy Formation Sentence let analized in future. Alquran very often explain the orbit and space objects. That motivate everyone to pay attention the Earth rotate, why this planet with other planets circulate the Sun. All that globe not beamed as looked to be, no string and no place hinge. Altogether make a move in a state of adrift free. Only Rawasia (magnetic bar) causing each globe that globular. Finally how to eliminate gravity? It’s way rotate part of aircraft by horizontal. When that rotation faster centrifugal force getting greater and the gravity getting smaller, finally it lose the gravity and the aircraft start flying. Of course people would surprise: how the aircraft can keep rotate without fulcrums? Thats why we named that aircraft Shuttling System that is aircraft likes two disc adjoining attached in the midle as fulcrums: A. The Top part, we name Positive rotate to right, and the edges is getting thicker and havier. B. The Buttom part, we name Negative rotating to left, and the edges is getting thicker and havier. C. Middle Part , we name Neutral, air crew placed and also machine and everythings turning Negative and Positive at the same time. The aircraft can liftup added with explosion from the engine. However that aircraft construction later, let the engineer doit it, and we are sure the aircraft will bulletproof and also waterproof.

As a practicing Roman Catholic Christian, I always make sure to make time to listen to Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad's Khutbahs. I hope he becomes a huge inspiration to Muslimas around the world. He spreads true wisdom. We all learn when the great religions of our world become more peaceful, more wise, more concerned with knowledge and spirituality, and when we all understand each other better. I pray also that one day Islam can return to being like this - contributing to science, philosophy, theology.
Islam is the religion you should not ignore. No matter how hard media tries to demonise Islam, the beauty of this religion is hard to fight. Embrace this beautiful religion and enter into the gardens of eternal bliss.
And today most scientists and so many westerners are revrting to Islam; we are facing economic and population shrinking in the West while the muslim/islamic world is rising again. The wheel of fortune in history keeps spinning. Islam will inevitably be the #1 player in the next centuries

Been listening to Abdul Hakim Murad for almost 15 years this is another great lecture let me be honest I’m 32 growing up in America I can recall on several occasions my aipac teachers blatantly lying about the history of science quite shameful and I still can’t accept it as being for any good reason so curse to them why can’t we all get along get to know one another for all our beauties which we all are

For although there is not a single aspect of European growth in which the decisive influence of Islamic culture is not traceable, nowhere is it so clear and momentous as in the genesis of that power which constitutes the paramount distinctive force of the modern world and the supreme source of its victory of natural science and the scientific spirit. … What we call science arose in Europe as a result of a new spirit of inquiry, of new methods of investigation, of the method of experiment, observation, measurement, of the development of mathematics in a form unknown to the Greeks. That spirit and those methods were introduced into the European world by the Arabs." [Robert Briffault, The Making of Humanity, page 191] "Roger Bacon was no more than one of the apostles of Muslim science and method to Christian Europe; and he never wearied of declaring that knowledge of Arabic and Arabic science was for his contemporaries the only way to true knowledge... Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1919), 201-202) Historian of science Victor Robinson succinctly summarises the contrast between medieval Europe and Islamic Spain: “Europe was darkened at sunset, Cordova shone with public lamps; Europe was dirty, Cordova built a thousand baths; Europe was covered with vermin, Cordova changed its undergarments daily; Europe lay in mud, Cordova’s streets were paved; Europe’s palaces had smoke-holes in the ceiling, Cordova’s arabesques were exquisite; Europe’s nobility could not sign its name, Cordova’s children went to school; Europe’s monks could not read the baptismal service, Cordova’s teachers created a library of Alexandrian dimensions.” ( Robinson, V. As a evangelical Christian, I very much enjoyed this thought-provoking lecture. There's a lot to think about. As is true when taking in any lecture,, it's counterproductive and even foolish to expect the speaker to be right in every selection, interpretation, and conclusion, just as it's arrogant and even silly to assume that our own responses to it are perfect. The question is, did the speaker bring something compelling to us. Yes, he did!
Be patient with the ‘hate’ comments. It’s a huge mental task to acknowledge the euro centric view of the history of science is not accurate let alone the huge intellectual debt owed to the Middle East
And where did most of the seeds learning come from? Simple they took it through conquest like everything else Islam has gotten. It was spread through the sword and ginned through the sword, there was no Islamic world till it was made by force and taken from others. Islam is a conanising force like no other before, this is also part of the history of Islam and Islamic scholarship. Did they progress past slaughter and conquest at some point? Yes, most civilisations do else they crumble to dust.

This is so important because generally in the West the narrative regarding the development of science moves from ancient Greece to Galileo and then Newton. The Islamic golden age is overlooked when it's a known fact that Newton was influenced by Muslim scientists like Ibn Haytham and others. There has been a huge contribution by Muslims that has been overlooked or underacknowledged. I appreciate The Royal Institution for providing a voice to the collective voice of Muslims through this talk by an esteemed scholar from Europe, Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad.
Like you guys ignore how Indian mathematicians developed the "arabic numerals" and the concept of zero and the decimal system. Just claiming it was yours. It was the Indians.

@@lawrencefrost9063 I don't think that is the case. I am an Indian myself. I greatly appreciate the contribution of the ancient Indian civilization to development of philosophy (especially metaphysics), mathematics and various other fields of knowledge. In fact, I read in a book by a Muslim saint and scholar that as per our belief the prophets were sent to all the regions in the world and many of them have their graves in India itself which he saw with his spiritual vision (as per the text). The civilizations with prophetic sources have been a major source of the knowledge because of their emphasis on the pursuit of spiritual and moral development, knowledge and wisdom over base desires, superstition and immorality. In fact, I have heard a famous Muslim scholar talk about Adi Shankaracharya and other great philosophers. In fact, he motivated others to read those texts. In the view of Islam, the truth about oneness of God has been something that all Prophets throughout history have called people towards. We are required to accept and bring faith on all the prophets that have ever been sent. However, we don't know all of them and if a said figure is one of them we cannot tell in all the cases. And we don't accept that the texts are unaltered and preserve their meaning in letter and spirit. And we believe that with the coming of the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace be unto him) and the Divine Law he brought (the Shariah), the previous religions have been abdicated. Which doesn't mean we don't accept the big contributions of others when it comes to scientific, philosophical or technological development of the world. Therefore, we cannot pursue falsehood by not giving others the credit they deserve. If someone has done something good then it is not right in principle to deny them of that credit. The Islamic Law won't permit us to take the credit of what others have done as this would count as injustice.

Seems to me Islam destroyed far more graeco-roman culture than Christianity did both philosophically and artistically. Also not sure how moorish civilisation is closer to European (presumably german) culture than that of Rome & Greece. Europeans have always liked their pretty pictures of the human form and their personification of divinity - which are highly criticised by the islamic/jewish tradition
Many classical giants lauded the Islamic world rich with knowledge. It's only in modernity do we see the erasure of Islam's contribution to the sciences as part of a bigger anti-Islam movement
The amount of hate in the comments on here is shameful. I am a hardcore atheist and I can appreciate this lecture. Yes, religions have brought untold evil to the world (it's just human nature) but they've also brought a lot of good. Is focusing on and talking about that good unacceptable? That's all this is.

The reason for the hate is probably that he makes no point and basically just says Islam is a pretty rational religion, that there were racists who thought wrong things about Islam (I agree), and finally that Islam is just wonderful. There is no substance here except for maybe some bit of Islamic scientific history.

Alot of rumi quotes are actually not attributed to him like consider anything done by Coleman Barks as dubious and to be taken with a massive pinch of salt
If tima winter ascribed the quote to Rumi,then the quote will be one that has a strong claim to be genuine. He's a highly respected, academic scholar.

We know most of these. We we were not taught that n schools, but we learned it from hearing elders talk among themselves. Spain, Inquisition and the burning of books in addition to the Mongol hordes invasion are common household stories.

I think people would like to do that without forsaking their faith but thats a dangerous proposition in islam for long. It might have preserved a tight knitted group but that group has lost sight of welfare for uts members due to that. Probably there is better way to put these arguments forward but i hope the message has been received clearly. It is a very enlightening talk on the contributions of Arabic people to science. We were never taught of these wonderful achievements of other civilizations in the field of science. Indian, Chinese, and Egyptian civilizations have significant contributions, too.
