Mega Man X7 is one of the most hated Mega Man games of all time, and I am here to totally blow everyone's mind by saying...yeah, it is as bad as they say, but we are going to spend the next 40 minutes level-headedly explaining why, compared to the roast I gave the game five years ago. So, I hope you strap in and enjoy the ride!

Sigma coming back as a villain constantly was just a bad when they could've just killed him off in X5 then brought him back in X8 (similar to what Twitch has proposed even though I disagree with the X5 bit where Sigma should've been killed off earlier but that's just me.) In games like X6 and X7, he was not needed at all. And in X7, he was a complete joke. For Wily it works since he is a goofy villain who is not supposed to be taken seriously but he can be competent. • I've heard some people defend X7 over X6 by saying that X6 failed at something tried and true while X7 failed at trying something new, but I've always raised an eyebrow at that. As said eloquently in this review, even with the addition of 3D, the game really doesn't change much from the previous games. X8 has its own problems, but I'd say it does more "new" than X7 despite going back to 2D since the actual systems are vastly different.

    @iggyminious@iggyminious2 жыл бұрын
    • One thing that I have always thought that X8 did well was making it so that X and Axel actually played differently in that game; as was stated in this video, Axel's one weapon he gets that gives him a big gun has one of the best damage outputs of literally anything in the whole game while being highly spammable, which I personally believe is the one major thing that gives you any sort of incentive to use Axel after you manage to unlock X. In X8, the 2 characters had clear strengths and weaknesses when compared to one another side by side: X's charged shots and special weapons are stronger, giving him better damage output (usually) overall, while Axel is able to fire in multiple directions and doesn't need any weapon energy to use his special weapons while also having a useful hover ability as well. It also bares mentioning that Zero was said to be much slower in X7 in terms of his combos, which is improved in X8, and the addition of him having a veritable repertoire of different equipable melee weapons that each change the way his attacks and combos work is a very fun feature as well, but holy good god is his sigma blade overpowered once you unlock that!

Eventually, when challenging red it’s revealed NONE of them had the virus, and sigma shows up, saying he never had anything to do with red alert, and had set this powerful group to die so that he’d be able to conquer the world more easily, and this would give more impact to Axl, as now he was trick into killing his own friends, and now it’s personal. He’s actually not a bad character and does bring a interesting concept to the series, but because he was first introduce in X7 of all things, of course he was going to get some of the blunt force of the backlash. Didn’t help that X himself was locked for most of the game, so you were pretty much forced to play as the new kid. • While Zero is deals the most damage, it is also the least useful to use because the attack range of his Z-Saber is short and therefore you have to get very close to the enemy to be able to attack. That is very problematic because by trying to get close to the enemies you run the risk of them attacking first and with the bosses it's even worse. • I've encountered fans who've often retrospectively say they were always disappointed more on X6 then they did for X7, but I really think a lot of people don't recall that or at least lack the context that, from the beginning, there was a lot more at stake for X7 as a 3D PS2 game, than X6 being another 2D entry on PS1. People in 2002-2003 demanded for a traditional MM game in 3D after (unfairly, IMHO) dismissing and kicking Mega Man Legends to the curb. I still recall the sheer hype fans had on the simple prospect of playing X and Zero in true 3D, and they got it -- in filth. All of X7's fundamental flaws become immediately evident upon release as the reviewers teared it apart and fans made a stink about it (I think it was on Planet Mega Man, I think?). To this day, I still believe that game almost single-handedly damaged the X series' brand and jeopardized its longevity (much like Sonic 06 did to the Sonic franchise, but maybe less in scale). So when people compare X7 to X6 as to what was the biggest disaster, I see the latter as having been expendable really. Lukewarm reviews at best aside, nobody outside the fanbase really cared for it. To me, the bigger disaster of them will always Mega Man X7.

It's not that we don't recall, it's that we don't care. It's not a compelling argument. I don't care how much was at stake, it's not relevant to which game is less fun to play. If you want to use that factor to make your decision, that's fine for you, but nobody else is beholden to that. Another quite random example, no amount of "this was really impressive for its time!" is going to make me enjoy the long boring tram ride at the beginning of Half Life. I don't care how impressive it was back then when it was new. I care about how utterly bored I am waiting for the game to start so I can actually play now.

  • I think comparing to Naughty Dog is more than fair. Capcom can seriously outperform most of the industry when they try. For example DMC 4 looking as good as it did at a completely solid 60 FPS in 2008, when most devs were going for overly brown and grey, graphically impressive but drab games that often struggled with 30. Platinum Games couldn't manage Bayo 1 at a solid 60 two years later. I'm out of my depth on this one but I've seen DMC 5 be described as masterfully optimized and as such able to run beautifully on hardware you wouldn't think could handle it. Capcom can put the rest of the industry to shame on a technical level when they really try. Or at least Itsuno's team can anyway.

  • If they make an X9, they should reconceptualize the Alia tutorials into something like Kid Icarus Uprising. In that game, all the dialogue was voice acted, so you could play the game and listen to the story at the same time, meaning the dialogue never interrupts the gameplay. It was an extremely engaging mix. So, keep the action chaotic and arcadey, but meanwhile you have your friends at Maverick Hunter HQ bantering about the stage, what the maverick is actually doing that's so bad, etc. Maybe drop breadcrumbs to set up twists later in the story and create some intrigue. If Alia is going to give tutorial info, they need to do a better job with the narrative wrapper. Have X, Zero and Axl actually respond to her. Use it as an opportunity for characterization. They sort of did this in Noah's Park in X8, but only for that stage. If they give you the option to turn the in-stage dialogue off, like Sonic Forces, I think it could work for repeat playthroughs too.

  • 26:11 I can shed a bit of light on why the production values are so cheap. In 2000-2004, Japan entered into a brief economic recession; the first significant one since the early 1980s. Capcom cut a lot of corners for their game productions going from the PS1 into the early PS2 era. Outside of Resident Evil (their cash cow at the time), you can see a noticeable drop in quality or content for pretty much everything. Megaman X6 was rushed through development in a little over half a year (absolutely insane turnaround time) behind Keiji Inafune's back after he tried to end the X series with X5. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter shares the same rendering engine and inhouse devkit as MMX7 and X8. Devil May Cry 2 reused a lot of assets left over from DMC1's cutting room floor in order to get that game to shelves in time. And a lot of smaller examples for Capcom games released around the same time.

The problem is, X7 isn't fun without specific power-ups to negate bad design choices that shouldn't have been in the game, to begin with. I have beaten Mega Man X6 and X7. I even saved every reploid in both games. I'd done this over 20 years ago and til this date, I have never once even had the idea to do it again and I most likely never will. I probably haven't beaten Mega Man X7 at all since 2003. Even still, I can enjoy Mega Man X4 just fine without grabbing a single power-up or using special weapons. Because not only is it challenging, it's still fun. It gameplay doesn't depend on you to grab power-ups that are essentially hotfixes to enjoy the game. X7 is trash. plain and simple. Just because you want to implement an idea, it doesn't mean that idea is gonna be implemented correctly and not everyone likes something for giving it the best effort. If it sucks, then it sucks.

Even X6 fails at this as I mostly use guard shell glitch and Zero Saber glitch to neuter stage hazards. But at least in X6 you have core MMX4 from the startmovement _from the start_ which is really fun combined with the glitches. You don't get that in X7. It is like making a Ratchet and Clank game where you need to use glitches to actually make movement fun and have maxed out weapons to finnally kill enemies in not a billion hits -oh wait that RaC game exists, it is called Tools of Destruction, a shame because that game would be fantastic if it wasn't held back by those 2 things.-

  • X8 isn't exactly an all time great game, but I remember playing it when it came out after 7, and by comparison it feels like such a massive improvement. The X series is easily one of my all time favorites, but X7 might genuinely be the worst game I've ever played, bar none. It baffles me how obviously bad every aspect of the game is. It feels like shit to play, it looks like shit, its optimized HORRIBLY and has some of the most obvious frame drops I've ever seen. And the voice acting... jesus christ. X sounds like an elderly woman, Axl sounds like a preteen girl, and lines like "BURN BURN BURN BU- BURN IT TO THE GROUND BURN BURN BURN BURN!" is just burned into my skull. My few positive notes on the game, I actually love Axl as a character, I like his design a lot, I love that his alternate weapons come in the form of new guns, and while the copy ability was poorly implemented, it was a cool idea in theory. Uh... thats about it.

Better than 6 and 7, but I'd rather play unmodded 5, with the constant Alia interruptions and stupid RNG endings, than 8. Replaying the X series, 1-4 are all a great time, 5's a bit of a wet fart ending to the replay, 6-8 I don't even touch.

  • X7 was, and is still, the only X game I've played but never completed. I got to the fight with Red, and then the horrible camera and slow clunky controls just made the fight unbearable to me. I grew up to running FromSoft games with no health upgrades, so I find it fascinating that this far back I was put off so strongly. Right around when this game was out, I was also still determined enough to be diving into the endgame content of the Battlenetwork series, often going back and digging in for the undernet stuff past the end of the stories, or fighting Bass and other challenge spikes and having a blast of a time. I can still have some fun with X6, especially with the shadow armor which I just find a blast to use. But I'm not even remotely interested in playing X7 again, and this review finally put a stake in the heart of why. It's just so slow and pointless. Axl's weapons were fun, and while I found Zero's weapons interesting, I ended up not liking most of them, whereas I at least enjoyed using most of Axl's. As a player who has fundamentally never used the boss weapons for anything other than murdering other bosses with their weaknesses, I think this was the first game, (not counting the additional moves Zero would get from bosses), that I ever actually used boss weapons. Well, maybe I could say I still never used them, because even playing as X I never ended up using them here either. ... I was trying to come up with a positive to say and I ended up refuting myself anyway. I can't say that I hate X7, but I can say with absolute certainty that I find it a mind boggling level of disappointing.

There is just no energy nor anything unique that makes the levels work. The setpieces in 2D X games that sets each X game appart can work in 3D if designed around that. Maybe Axl's shots could cause the enemies to have less or no invulnerability frames thus making continous hits matter more while X would prioritize Charge Shot for the extra damage regardless of invuln frames?).

Have fun levels like that game, but make Zero faster and able to bridge-the-gap when fighting with some combos. Just increase the damn pace. Lock-ons make no SENSE, but Aim Assist. What I believe caused 90% of the issues is Capcom's rushing out Axel for Megaman ZX Advent, Megaman Zero series was ending, and clearly RUSHED. I can enjoy bits and pieces of this game, but... The problem with is just how bad it transtioned. Look how many megaman games were being produced at the time of the early 2000's. • I actually think the idea of X leaving the maverick hunters is a great idea. It's something that makes sense for a character like him, sure he always had a sense of justice, which is why we played as him, but he has always hated fighting and after 4 wars, one time where he watched the planet almost getting destroyed, and another time where he was trying to repair said almost destroyed planet only for another threat to appear, for a character as human compared to other reploids as X, it makes sense that he would get burnt out by all of this. Except that like everything else in this game, it was executed so poorly that it's not even funny. X came more across as a winy kid than the X we played as for 8 games (if you count Xtreme 1&2) straight before this which is why so many people hated it (which is ironic since it feels like whenever people talk negatively about X, this is where they point to) Although it's not a bad idea on its own in my opinion.

  • I'm gonna defend an aspect of X7 here. The idea of character portraits and text boxes for cutscenes, isn't an inherently bad idea, even for console releases. Specifically the Game Cube and Wii Fire Emblem games, "Path of Radiance" and "Radiant Dawn," use that style of cutscene most of the time (so does every FE game that's not Three Houses, but that's besides the point), and it works really well. If we go a bit more modern, it's also used in the story mode of every BlazBlue game (granted, those are fighting games, so the story, while amazing, isn't the main focus), the SAO games, and just Visual Novels as a whole. Now, X7 definitely executed it very poorly, but the idea isn't bad in and of itself

Give me something to look at, otherwise I'd be better served reading a book. At least then the entire screen is dedicated to the text and it's not mashing a button at end of every sentence.

    • @@mjc0961 I didn't say that it was perfect, just not an inherently bad idea. And besides, the only things that were mentioned that might have their flow interrupted by this, are SAO and Blazblue. And for Blazblue, the story modes are basically visual novels that get interrupted by a fighting game whenever shit goes down (a fighting game that is very good, by the way). Fire Emblem is a tactical RPG that deploys cutscenes and story in between levels, Visual Novels literally have the word "Novel" in the genre name, and the Persona games (mentioned by Skibot99 in the first reply) are very story heavy with a lot of dialogue between characters. When you have a game with as much dialogue as Persona 5, not everything can be some cinematic masterpiece on par with the intro cutscene from Xenoblade Chronicles. Also, I've got a radical idea for you, try reading the dialogue. Yes, sometimes it's garbage, but in every case I've brought up, the dialogue is done really well (like I said, X7 did this whole thing very poorly, and the shitty dialogue is one of the reasons it's so bad). I get that story heavy games aren't everyone's cup of tea, but just because you find a commonly used aspect to not be to your liking, doesn't mean it's an inherently flawed idea

I played and loved the game when I was really young, so it could've been nostalgia, although, I managed to get everything in the game through a few playthroughs and still thought it was my favorite. I recently tried replaying the game and just couldn't muster up the willpower to finish the Crimson Palace stages. It was honestly quite shocking how drastically my opinion on the game had changed within a year of the last playing through it. Personally, I think Megaman X should've been Megaman Axl, a game focused on Axl that omitted X, Zero, and Sigma. Ideally, I think this Megaman Axl game would've been better off in a serious atmosphere that focused on Axl leaving his family behind and having to take them out after realizing that they've gone Maverick. Essentially, this would be like a more serious and sad version of the original Megaman plotline. The game could put more emphasis on Axl's mental state after having to kill the people he grew up with and close to his entire life and he could question whether or not what he was doing was right. X7 makes this look like a joke with the banter between Axl and the Mavericks since Axl doesn't seem to actually care about them. It's a shame since I think X7, especially as this potential Megaman Axl game that I just mentioned, could've been really good.

X7 can be a bit wonky. - Level design (X7 > X6): Both aren't good (X6 is terrible) but I would take X7's levels even though they aren't good either. - Overall Gameplay/Difficulty (X7 > X6): X6 is frustratingly difficult, X7 is boringly difficult. Pick your poison. I'll take X7's boring gameplay. But I do prefer the Tweaks mod of X6 over both. - Music (X6 > X7): X6 is top tier, X7 is still good but nowhere as amazing as X6's soundtrack. - Story (X6 > X7): Going by Japanese scripts, X6. Otherwise, I don't know - Graphics (X7 > X6): Kind of an unfair comparison when looking at the two generations' graphical limitations. But X6 with the Tweaks mod is a godsend that destroys the original and X7. But I wouldn't say it's the worst Mega Man game out of the entire franchise. There are the DOS games.

  • Pros to X7: Red as a character and his motivations, the OST, how they handled the boss-refights (I LOVE the idea of the spooky robot graveyard, and you basically are fighting mindless zombie robots that sigma resurrected, and they even show this in a cutscene), the tag-team mechanic, the personalities of various characters being better fleshed out than in some titles, and keeping Alia not required. Cons: Literally everything else. Also, welcome to the "X7 is worse than X6" club, glad to finally have you join us.

  • Awesome as always. A friend of mine has a toddler with Bardet-Beidl syndrome, so I can somehow relate to the toil this must be. I myself have a toddler with autism, so I can put myself on the "being different" shoes also. I'll try to donate if the system can take my details.

  • 29:27 X sounded so much like those Tik Tok text to speech voices, that I busted out laughing. Tommy Wiseau or even Neil Breen have nothing on this.

  • Your mention of the Metal Gear Solid series got me thinking of the part near the end of MGS2 where Campbell and Rose ended up just being A.I.,and malfunctioning. Made me nostalgic as hell.
