They both escaped. I just play the original game (From where this anime comes) And in the end you understand that they really escaped together. She can't broke the iron bars (In various game scenes Rachel talks about how hard and difficult to break it is) and when Zack appears on the window. He is full of blood from breaking the window.

No, zack was definitely there. The glass is on the floor inside the room. If she had committed suicide by jumping out the window that glass wouldn’t have landed inside so he really was out there and they really did jump out the window together.

I have a theory about what actually happened. A lot of people say that the ending is Rachel committing suicide while her delusional mind imagines Zack being there with her. But think about the NAME of this anime: Angels of Death. So that leads me to this conclusion: Remember when the priest was talking to Danny about how Zack was brought to his building as an angel? Also consider that Zack wields a SCYTHE. Who else wields a scythe? The Grim Reaper!! So it’s ZACK who is the Angel of Death...AKA the Grim Reaper. But he is not THE Grim Reaper, he is Rachel’s Grim Reaper, the one destined to take her away to heaven when she dies. So Zack was probably executed for his crimes as a serial killer, but he visited Rachel in her room in SPIRIT (or as a ghost, which explains why he still has his scythe and his clothes from before). He came to escort Rachel to her death as she jumped from the window to commit suicide, because he remembered that she told him she would be scared to die alone (when they were just about to escape the building). So yes, Zack died. And yes, Rachel committed suicide. No, Rachel WAS NOT imagining Zack being there. They were together in the end-Zack was with Rachel in spirit as she killed herself jumping out of the window, holding her in his arms so she wouldn’t be afraid. I guess after that, both of them could live happily ever after as spirits. Well, that’s just my theory. Sorry if it’s too long

In the manga there is a scene with blood and without blood of the broken window. The scene WITH blood was Rachel’s dream, the scene WITHOUT blood is reality. The creator said that Zach and Rachel did end up living a life together so don’t worry! :3

MY THEORY: Rachel was actually hallucinating Zack because HOW did Zack get a new scythe??? I think Zack was executed and Rachel killed herself with Zack’s given knife. It was true that zack was executed once ray heard about this she was deep down devastated..due to all this negative emotions and all the sadness she’s been getting, she started to hallucinate seeing zack, jumping off the window and the last scene is when both zack and rey finally reunited in the afterlife visiting her in her room to come with him.
In the game they say .Your murderer is "Going to be executed" he is not dead at least. And Rachel can't break the iron bars from the window. On game she says a lot of times to Zack how hard iron bars are.

But there were NO bars left on the floor, how is that possible if Zack *really* broke the window from outside? Right, because there were no bars to begin with, it meant to say that Ray was feeling trapped inside the hospital. In-short, she killed herself at the end, Zack is already dead since he has been "sentenced to death", as what the psychiatrist said, *sentenced* , not awaiting execution or is on death row. This is just my theory, and I don't know which theory is exactly true, since I'm still confused by what this ending trying to say.
What I think actually happened in the end is that Rachel stabbed herself in her room, and Zack coming and braking the window and killing her symbolized both of them meeting again in the afterlife, and when they jump out of the window, its like they are ascending to heaven basically. I know there was an interview with the creator of the game saying that they both escaped together and lived, but that ending really doesnt make any sense in my opinion. I think the creator was just giving closure. Also we see Zack with his scythe, which supports the idea that it was just a hallucination by Rachel.
Also in the opening you can see her shadow hanging..which looks like she commited suicide..

I saw an opinion on internet nowadays and i totally agree with that: More time passes, the anime in particular shows that months pass since the seasons change between scenes with Rachel. Information about Zack is withheld from Rachel until eventually Rachel’s therapist tells her that Zack was sentenced to death. That same night, Rachel reaches a breaking point and she experiences a delusion, a symptom that is part of her mental illness. She experiences a delusional episode in which she sees Zack breaking into her room through the window with his scythe claiming he has come to fulfill his promise to kill her. In her delusion, Zack does kill her and they fall out of the window. In the anime they’re floating outside of the window unrealistically, in the game they just disappear out the window between one scene and the next and the manga has yet to conclude but it’ll probably be similar. But Zack wasn’t actually there and Rachel simply killed herself. How do we know? -The psychiatrist stated that Zack was sentenced to death. She didn’t say he is awaiting execution or is on death row, she said “sentenced to death”. He is already dead by the time she tells Rachel this. -Zack has a scythe in Rachel’s delusion, which is not possible since his scythe broke before they managed to escape the murder building and I doubt Zack could have just happened by one on his way to see Rachel. -Zack is still wearing the same clothes and his bandages, which is impossible since months passed since he was apprehended and if he had broken out of prison he would have showed up in prison clothes without bandages on. -There are no bars on the windows of any room in the institute that we see from panned out or internal shots, only on Rachel’s window, which likely means that Rachel sees these bars since she feels trapped there but they are not actually real. -The knife on the floor has no blood on it whatsoever, so no one was injured or killed with that knife. In conclusion, Rachel learning that Zack was executed pushed her over the edge and she finally resorted to killing herself. How? By breaking the glass and wood beams on the window using the knife (which I’m surprised she still had), climbing up (hence the blood on the glass and bottom of the wall) and then throwing herself out of the window, all the while seeing Zack being with her. People argue that the glass is broken inwards, but some glass is broken inwards, which would happen even when breaking a window from the inside. The glass will fall both in and outside. Also that window is large and very little glass is actually on the inside of the room.

I have two theories: 1. Rachel died in her sleep and Zack killing her was only a dream. Here's why: When Rachel was going to sleep and she closed her eyes, there was a second of pause and she opened them again when she heard a sound so she was probably dreaming from there. Someone also said something about her getting diagnosed with something, so it was probably the cause of her death. As for Zack, when we saw him again in ep 16 we saw him holding a scythe despite the fact it broke. So it doesn't make sense how he got that. And even if he was still alive, he wouldn't have known where Rachel was living. However, there's one con; if this theory is correct and Rachel did die in her sleep, having the end credits (where it shows the broken glass in the room along with the knife and Ray missing) in the last episode would've been pointless, and I believe that it was there for a reason. 2. Zack survived through the execution and either killed Rachel or fled from the police with her. One reason why is that the broken glass went on the inside, and it would've gone on the outside if Rachel was the one who broke it. Also, there were bars so a knife couldn't be strong enough to break it. Another reason is that the police were outside, and they wouldn't be there otherwise if Zack wasn't there. The blood on the wall was also canonically not Rachel's. Although, like the first theory, there are also some cons; like mentioned, Zack had a new scythe and I couldn't think of any reason how he got that other than someone lending it to him. Also the fact that he wouldn't have known where Rachel is currently staying. So ye. The first theory would've been more accurate but me being the less angsty person I'd go for the second theory. Also, another thing: if the second theory is correct, Zack probably killed Ray, shown by the knife that was given. I believe that the knife is a metaphor, signifying her life. In episode 14 (or was it 15?), Zack said something about giving it to her so she could use it until she dies. In the end credits of ep 16, Rachel left the knife on the floor, not bringing it with her when she jumped out of the window with Zack, saying that she won't be using it anymore, meaning that she died. Rachel committing suicide is the least possible explanation for what happened. She couldn't have been the one to break the window because of the glass inside, and the fact that she's too weak to break it with a knife. She also stated that she doesn't want to commit suicide. As for the police, I find it impossible that they would immediately be there the time Rachel tries to kill suicide. Lmao, I'm just saying things all over again.

in the GAME they both live and escape but were never seen again, which the author said after people were devastated with the ending. the anime has the exact same ending, so i think its safe to say that they both live and escape and never seen again as well.
if anyone is wondering for the proof for it, its in the manga. unfortunately theres no online translation (especially since it came out in 2015-16) but in the manga they confirmed it along with other details on the floors and more on the characters.

For the people who don't know the theory I help Zack escaped from prision before he was even there the scream was from that doctor lady and she called the police because he escaped that's why the police where there (I'm bad at explaining) The blood on the Window was Rachel's because she was walking barefoot on these window glass things and that's why the window was with blood on that window thing idk how to call it and she couldn't break the whole window with just that knife and also that knife was clear no blood And u could see at the end that they were hugging she smiled also the glass were inside the room and not outside and MAYBE season 2 is comming out so it's impossible for them to be deald and in interwiew did the creator say they ran away Or they're just dead

It does slightly bother me that there is a pretty big age gap... since it’s confirmed that Rachel is 13, it’s kind of creepy having a 20 yo and a 13 yo in a relation ship. Buuuut they do really give the two a romantic tension sometimes. So, I’d guess maybe we could just pretend the ages aren’t weird, and enjoy the ship as it is ;u;

My theory is a little weak but, My theory is that Zack died, as he was sentenced to death. Rachel then somehow saw Zack breaking the window and want to take her with him(I think her mental health was gone at this point and it also adds up that it could be zacks spirit that she is seeing). The cops arrived as Rachel began to use her knife to break the window open and then she jumped off to her death to join Zack in the after life. The fact that some people stated that the glass was on the inside(someone broke in) and not on the outside(Rachel broke the window), is still 50/50, idk if the creators made a logical mistake or if it was intentional. Either way both are dead and live happily after. I go cri in my corner again... ಥ_ಥ
I mean its really confusing and as you say the window broke from outside. Some people say that She is ''sick'' and she imagined zack so either they are both alive,escaped and the nurse lied to her or zack was pretending to be dead so he could actually leave..? idk or zack really died in prison and rachel commitied suicide. but how did she break the window? she had a knife, but its weak to those bars. i really hope that they didn't die and thats just what they want us to believe and i want season two to continue on a site i am really curious of what happened;-;

@@akemni But there were NO bars left on the floor, how is that possible if Zack *really* did broke the window from outside? Right, because there were no bars to begin with, it meant to say that Ray was feeling trapped inside the hospital. In-short, she killed herself at the end, Zack is already dead since he has been "sentenced to death", as what the psychiatrist said, *sentenced* , not awaiting execution or is on death row. This is just my theory, and I don't know which theory is exactly true, since I'm still confused by what this ending trying to say.
