Trap is always great, but this episode made me really appreciate how lovely and friendly and generous his comedy style and persona are. McElroys are prone to wild swings, but he always calmly lets them do their thing, acknowledges the joke, and then gently but firmly moves on. He's such a good host for a show that is all about one-upping and pedantry, because as the host he never seems to get drawn into the one-uppance, never seems intimidated, never tries to show off by taking anyone else's joke and running with it. So many times comedians will be always trying to get in their joke, but Trap is so willing to just be like, you know, that was a good joke you made, here's a little context for it in case anyones confused, I don't need to make my own joke here, I'm good. What a blessing. Not to mention that, were I a show a host, hosting a group like the McElroys would be my worst nightmare. I love em but three people who know eachother that well and are that in sync AND that quick witted can so easily accidentally team up against you 3v1 without meaning to. But Trap manages them so gracefully and doesn't seem bamboozled or threatened at all. A true professional.

Gonna have to disagree. "Within a span of X time" means that the first event and the last event being counted happened X time apart from each other. If some things happened during the first week of March, they also happened during the month of March, but if a series of events "spanned the month of March" that means they all took place across the entire month, and not just a single week or shorter.

@Niko__01 Жыл бұрын
He isn't critically injured, no. Gizmo, or really any Mogwai or Gremlin can recover from the process... But they play the horror elements up, and in no situation where one of these beings get wet is it depicted as not being harmful. They are have looks of agony, are barely able to move, have cysts or blisters form and pop out the babies, and they look quite drained after the ordeal, during which time they are so overcome they can essentially not function. So I wouldn't say "Gizmo is not harmed by water" exactly.
@Samael1113 Жыл бұрын
Um, actually, Gizmo *is* harmed psychologically as the water insemination was non-consensual. Moreover his offspring eventually attempt to murder him and the town. The entire scenario could have been avoided if his right to dominion over his body was unassailable. Mogwai elections matter.

More of an addition, but as long as you don't completely startle the skunk to make it feel immediately threatened, they will usually warn you by doing a few little charge stomps before aiming it's butt at you. Skunks don't like spraying if they can avoid it, especially as they get older, so they try to give ample warning before committing to spraying you in their thiol based oils. Also, Um, Actually... Missingno isn't canonically a pokemon. It is a weird designation for when something happens that shouldn't exist, and it's appearance in the game, ESPECIALLY if you capture it and even more especially if you save the game after capturing it, has a strong possibility of corrupting your save file and making things break.
@Samael1113 Жыл бұрын
Much agreed!! Excellent point about Missingno not being a Pokémon
@owgirl Жыл бұрын
@@owgirl Also, another Um Actually for Missingno., it is not only an L shape! Data miners/exploiters have found I believe 5 different forms of Missingno., each with different types as far as Im aware. There is one shaped in an Aerodactyl skeleton style, an Kabutops fossil, the Marowak Ghost pre sylph scope in pokemon tower is classified as one (hence the different typing meaning the question was poorly worded), and a seperate one in Yellow version, that looks like somepne ripped through code (literally). Pokemon Yellow's "normal" missingno. (The ripped one) is also typed differently, at Normal/999.
@SwordOfBlueThunder Жыл бұрын
Also, Missingno. does have actual pokemon cries, and is thought of as deleted pokemon! They (there are 39 distinct missingno, but only 5 forms) have coded parts to them, and some even have pokemon cries with no echo. Many people think that they were simply poorly removed pokemon. This is largely due to the fact that it can pull the cry data and that not everything is a corrupting garbled mess. It is alsp supported by a 2020 "release"/data mine of an original devs pokemon Blue, in which there were 190 pokemon, but the excess 39 pokemon were saved for generation 2. This can also be seen, as when trading certain gen 2 pokemon back to gen 1, you instead recieve a missingno. You cannot trade back all johto pokemon, but those that can will become the missingno. TlDr: Missingno is not technically canonical, however the pokemon the 39 distinct missingno values were supposed to be likely are, or were also scrapped in gen 2.

My understanding of the brontosaurus thing is that some paleontologists believe that there are some species in the Apatosaurus genus that are incorrectly classified, and that should be moved to a new genus which they are choosing to use the name Brontosaurus for, which would make it a valid genus if their theory is correct. Travis is correct that the origin of the Brontosaurus name was from a specimen where the wrong skull had been put on the body of another animal. Idk if this is an "um, actually..." or just more context lol
@sporkbot Жыл бұрын
That is it. I am torn on this issue. On the one hand, brontosaurus is a great name, "thunder lizard" in greek. On the other, it was proven that this is not a valid genus, but rather an error in classification, and trying to pry in space for the old name, just because you feel it's a cool name is kind of desperate and sad.

Um, Actually In the original Pokemon Red (north america), there are a total of 153 pokemon. The 150, Mew, and there are TWO glitches. One is named Missingno. One is an assortment of glitched-out characters that looks exactly like Missingno. If you transfer both of those into Pokemon Stadium, they look like a pokedoll, or Substitute. However, one of the Missingno is pink, and the other is purple. This makes them two distinct pokemon! Also if you use a Rare Candy on a Missingno it delevels to 100, and evolves into Rhyhorn, but keeps Sky Attack.

I'm still befuddled by the first question of this episode. The events in the movie _Iron Man_ alone take more than one week. Stark was held by terrorists for three months, is said to have been bedridden for several weeks, and then needs to start building the new Iron Man weapon. So, not even counting flashbacks, there's no way these three movies all take place within the span of one week. When I was watching this episode, my first response was something like, "Um, actually.... They must've taken place over the same year." Which still wouldn't be incorrect, given the answer they _wanted._

Um, actually, there were *multiple* mistakes in the Pokemon question. The one you mentioned, but also: (1) You didn't have to exploit a glitch to get Mew in Red/Blue/Yellow, you could get it at official events held by the game creators between 1996 and 2000. There are Pokemon in every generation of games that work this way, obtainable only via sanctioned events or trades. (2) There were multiple glitches to encounter a Missingno, and depending on the glitch you used and how you performed it, it wouldn't always be an L-shaped sprite. Sometimes it would even be a ghost sprite, as in the one used for the Lavender Town tower ghost encounter.

That was a very nice observation. :)
Good point, even Griffin himself has a real hard time wrangling in his family, both in MBMBaM and TAZ. Trapp keeps the episode moving (mostly) pretty gracefully, with that of that lack of a need to be the center of attention always.
Thank you for this analysis!
even when he does continue a contestant's joke he participates in the humor but isn't competitive, and doesn't showboat. he actively enables the players' nerd-dom.

Um, actually, Gizmo is not harmed by water, that is how he reproduces. While this is not a good thing in the long run, he isn't badly injured by the process.
reproduction, being injured: same thing, right? But, no, seriously, I came down to the comment section to see if someone said this, and your comment was the first one I saw... I thought I was losing my mind, and that I was misremembering the movie(s) or something...
Um, actually, Gizmo *is* harmed psychologically as the water insemination was non-consensual. Moreover his offspring eventually attempt to murder him and the town. The entire scenario could have been avoided if his right to dominion over his body was unassailable. Mogwai elections matter.
Um actually, Gizmo is definitely "harmed" by water, however Trapp specifically states that water is "fatal" to all of the characters, so he is in fact incorrect

Much agreed!! Excellent point about Missingno not being a Pokémon
I have befriended two baby wild skunks (pancake and skunknik) and more than a few baby oppossums, one of which decided to live with me. Skunks make amazing, sassy little friends, and also do the stomp thing while playing.

A shame that Griffin wasn't there. He's by far the most pedantic one with his younger sibling energy
Having Sam from Ghost among the Ghost names stumping them was really funny to me, because in Germany the movie was titled "Ghost: Nachricht von Sam" (Message from Sam), so my brain immediately went to "well, that's an easy one", before realising the German habit of adding stupid subtitles to movies was at play again...
I was just repeating his frantic line to Whoopi, "Say my name: Sam Wheat! Say my name! Sam Wheat!"
Travis knowing way too much for the Jurassic Park question is so so so on brand, this whole thing is great
My first thought when I saw the title was that there would be a bunch of McElroy trivia questions as well. I think it would be absolutely hilarious to test the boys in their own improv and as long as it's either based on one off remarks or equally divided between their characters/bits, possible to do without making it easier for one than another.
Trap: "We're talking about the show where The Devil solves mysteries, right?" Me: "No, you're thinking of Monk."
12:44 - 13:08 killed me. "i'm not gonna get locked up in my own bullshit - this one LOVES water." i love the mcelroys so much.
Um technically, since "your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate" could be reduced to "your cousin's roommate," and the answer "your brother's sister's cousin's college roommate" can also be reduced to "your cousin's roommate," one could argue this is in effect the same answer (as opposed to simply "close enough to get the point," as Trapp stated).
Um actually “your fathers brothers nephew” could be your uncles nephew-in-law, so related to his wife your aunt, making the nephew’s cousin completely unrelated to the family.
you know, i think these are some of my favourite guests to date. I love how Travis and Justin have this sibling rivalry going on especially with the "I feel like he's cheating" hahaha! that got me so good. I would definitely do that with my siblings :P
"Travis cheats" is a running joke on The Adventure Zone.
Umm actually, Mew could be officially 'caught' through an event, not just a glitch. Also to be technically accurate, Missingno isn't an official pokemon so shouldnt count towards the number of pokemon, also there's different forms it appears as as well as it's not bird type in pokemon yellow... even tho the question specifically mentions red/blue, i guess that's just an extra fact.
Not caught given
also misingno can have dex numbers other than 000
also he says that bird type isnt in red and blue which is technically correct but implies its in the other games, it is not. also it could be misunderstood as flying type not being in the game which is also wrong
If you're talking about pokemon "in Red/Blue" without the word "official", Missingno is indeed a Pokemon in Red/Blue!
Um, actually, Missingno doesn't always appear as a garbled shaped mess. It can appear as one of the fossil sprites if you enter certain characters in the player's name field.
Um actually, Missingno also can appear with the pokemon tower ghost sprite.

McElroy Boys! And Um, Actually! Ya love to see it. I wish they had more comics questions (esp Dr. Strange) and less vidja game questions for Clint to shine.
Good point. Bring that man back on and ask him about some comics!
so excited they got the bad boy of podcasting
Um actually... Mew was given to 20 people as part of a competition event. It was basically hacked in by the devs as you would with a cheat device, but it was officially awarded as a prize, not obtained through a glitch.
You can also obtain it with a glitch, which at this point I think is how 99.99% of people have obtained Mew in RBY have done it.
@@HypothermicBacklash True, I should say that it is “not only obtained through a glitch,” as there was a legitimately official way of getting Mew.
Mew was given to a lot more than 20 people! You just had to go to an event at a local mall to get traded one.
So amazing and hilarious to see the McElroys just running circles around Trapp with their stupid but silly brand of humor. Trapp doesn't run the show, they do now.
Justin's absolute glee at giving Travis shit over watching Lucifer made my week
Just finished Ethersea today and I felt so sad but I can't believe the McElroys are giving me another dose of happiness!
I'm not sure what makes Dark Helmet's connection more confusing: The fact that it COULD reduce to just being Lonestarr's cousin's former roomate (father's brother's nephew could just BE Lonestar, and then his cousin's former roommate) or if it is a DIFFERENT nephew of his uncle so that would make Lonestarr the cousin of the other father's brother's nephew which might make Dark Helmet just Lonestar's former roommate- but Dark Helmet does specify it makes them "absolutely nothing" so that isn't the option.
Um actually, MissingNo is not Pokemon #000, it is not at all a pokemon that actually exists in lore. It has no pokedex entries in any game. It is purely a game code error and is not a secret intended to be found or in any other way obtained throughout franchise history.
My pea brain was like "A James McAvoy themed episode? How incredibly specific these episodes are getting..."
@3:02 Certainly I'm not the only one who finished "Yyyy-its been, one week" with "since you looked at me".
I can see Trap reading out loud from a card, "Though largely considered immoral, there are many justifications for committing murder" for the Um, Morality? episode.
Um actually being within the same week is also being within a month's worth of time. It wasn't incorrect it was only less precise.
^this
Um, Actually...they say it was "within the *SPAN* of one month" not just "within". Anything happening within a week does not, by definition, span the month. Just saying.
@@Shadnoir "WITHIN the span of one month" still includes one week. Unless it is canonical that the week includes the last few days of one month and the beginning of the next.
@@jb888888888 um actually if you follow the pedantism of the language used, "within a span" of one month implies the entire period of the month. I would say you can still probably claim it as "just less precise but you still understand it", but that's not in the spirit of the show!
I'm obsessed with Clint's TARDIS console lava lamp
The only way Travis could have done any better would be if they asked only things a sexpert would know.
Amazing that they could find three fellows with the same last name.
I'm not sure if you're clowning or being serious
@@reuniclus9 That's as it should be.
Um actually!! Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs wasn't nominated for best picture, but it did win an honorary award!
There should be an Um Actually episode that's opposite day. It's all real life questions, and the last one is a pop culture question
Um Actually, while that's the most common MissingNo. there are others that can be gotten through different ways of triggering glitch encounters.
Ummm, actually… Clint won in my heart
Um Actually "Clyde" isn't that ghost's name, it's canonically a nickname. "Clyde"'s real name is Pokey. Or お惚け if you want to get really technical. And "Nearly Headless Nick" is also a nickname, his real name is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington.
Also, the enemies in Pac-Man are not canonically "ghosts," but as "monsters" or at the most, "ghost monsters."
@@ShawnRavenfire Does that mean they're ghosts of monsters, or monstrous ghosts?
@@jb888888888 Nobody knows.
@@ShawnRavenfire stop being a weeb
Also, "Danny Phantom" is an alias. His real name is Daniel Fenton, and he's technically half-human, half-ghost.
21:37 Um actually, in certain releases of Pac-Man, the orange and red ghosts sometimes get their names mixed up-meaning that ghost is both Blinky and Clyde.
The way Travis hit the "ummm actually...." is choice
Clint's enthusiasm somehow made me laugh 17:26
This collab is the gift I never knew I needed. 😊
Justin messing with Trapp over scary vs parody scary movies has me dying and reminds me of the "Curse a Real Sword" bit from MBMBAM 😂 Also I hope they have Griffin on a future episode he is perfect for this.
Having just started the episode i am SO EXCITED to see the intersection of two of my favorite things; Um, Actually/CollegeHumor and the McElroy family
Um actually Silence of the Lambs and Beauty and the Beast are very similar as they both involve characters seeking to change their appearance with the aide of an imprisoned woman.
You know a group of people are a family when they can bounce off each other like this! It's so fun to watch. I'm super impressed with the Forrest Gump lore knowledge! I only knew about the Gump & Co. book because of the 372 Pages podcast!
TBH though, watching the entirety of Stargate chronologically was one of the greatest experiences ever.
Um, actually while there are no literal “Dino”-type Pokémon, there are special Rock-type Pokémon, only obtained through fossils found in the wild, that are a clear reference to dinosaurs
um actually missingno represented several index numbers that didn't correspond to valid sprites that could be rendered, so it created the image from game memory which is why it appears as jarbled nonsense. this is to say, missingno isn't strictly pokemon #000, and the sprite could take different forms depending on which invalid index was rendered, as correspondingly different game data is used as the pixel data for the different sprites.
Um, actually - Gizmo isn't killed by water, it's how mogwai procreate. Sunlight is what kills him, and feeding a mogwai after midnight changes them into gremlins.
While you aren't technically wrong with your first point, the only way to get Mew *NOW* in Red/Blue/Yellow is by using a pretty interesting (imo) glitch.
My favourite sprite are the fossil sprites for Kabutops and Aerodactyl
This. I was screaming while watching
That was my answer to the Pokemon one. Mew was given out at official events so "officially" there are 151 pokemon in the Gen 1 games.
@@Niko__01 I wouldn’t make this comment if the spirit of um actually wasn’t very small corrections, but. I am fairly sure you could transfer a mew from another game(one example being bdsp where you don’t even have get it by event) to either the original, color, or 3ds version of red/blue.
1:43 Um Actually ".TV" means "a top-level domain from the country of Tuvalu," not "television." Though many companies jumped in to imply that once they noticed it.
I am always SO incredibly happy to see Clint, made my day!
This is by far my favorite episode so far.
Absolutely dying. This was the quickest I've ever tapped on a notification.
You don't know how much Um, Actually episodes improve my mornings. Thanks.
I've wanted this for YEARS thank you!!!
I love how because this is an all McElroys episode, it's also become one of the longer episodes solely because the McElroys will always milk a bit dry. And I'm fucking here for it.
I'm curious if Trapp is concerned about the shrinking water level in Lake Mead. Allegedly.
I've already seen this episode as an avid dropout supporter. But I'm also on my fourth re-listen of TAZ balance so I guess I'm gonna rewatch this too.
13:50 Um actually, you don't need a glitch to catch Mew, the intended way is via a gift distribution, which did actually happen for both the Japanese and American releases.
This is my favorite episode of um actually. I am only two minutes in and I already know nothing can top this for me
Just wait till next year
@@Sebboebbo this is so ominous… i need to know what this means
Excellent episode! Good job, our boy Travis!
A McElroy episode with a Stargate question? Yes please!
