Everytime he would get the ball there was a feeling it's gonna be goal even though he had 2-3 defenders ahead of him and he had to penetrate between them. The pitches were also really heavy. Not good for explosive players. R9 at this point was the greatest of all time. I don't think Messi, CR7, Pele or Maradona would have done any better than him. I think it was a big achievement for any team to keep Ronaldo scoreless over two legs. AC Milan had great defenders who defended with heart. There is no doubt that Ronaldo is the best attacker the world has ever seen. He was direct and menacing.

20+ years later and watching the foul at 2:34 still pisses me off. 100% a red card but it was a different time. This is something that he dealt with constantly because defenders couldn't stay in front of him. 100% it contributed to his injuries in his career, i wish he had never gone to the Italian league.
All you can see in the video above are not ending-career fouls. Harsh, tough, but not that "evil". Just to make a comparison, I never saw a broken leg during the 90s in Italy, but many in England in the years 2k. Maradona got a broken leg in Spain, not in Italy. BTW the injuries of Ronaldo were caused by his weak knee ligaments, not by fouls. He's got an incredible muscle structure that provided him superhuman speed, but at the same time the ligaments couldn't handle such power in changing directions and in his style of play. He had the first knee injury in Brazil, way before he played for PSV, where he developed that body structure. All - I mean, ALL - the injuries he's got in his career were knee ligaments-related. During France 98 WC he continuously took injections of painkillers to his right knee in order to cut down the pain, that it seems brought him to the infamous final against France. Look for Brazil-Netherlands 98 and tell me about harsh fouls.

Ronaldo era un fenómeno eso está claro, y la Serie A era un barrio de leñeros de mucho cuidado. Costacurta le ha metido cada entrada a Ronadlo que es de Juzgado de Guardia, y el tio tan tranquilo y hasta se queja de que no lo ha tocado. Y lo mismo Maldini y los demás. Al final la Serie A era imposible dar dos pases seguidos, se dedicaban a hacerte falta cada 2 pases y asi es imposible que haya circulacion de balon, y más aun con unos árbitros tan permisivos. Es que el tan admirado Maldini era un leñero de altura. Y hasta Cannavaro se dedicaba a hacerle marcajes al hombre a Ronaldo por todo el campo y parecía un chaval del filial. La Serie A para mi no es una vara de medir de que lo es un buen futbolista, alli solo hay leñeros y defensores, pero que defienden todos como el cholo bien pegados a portería. En España es realmente donde se ve a un buen defensor, defiende a 30 metros de la portería y cualquier fallo es gol. En Italia se cuelgan todos del larguero y solamente por acumulacion de hombres pues ya defiendes todo. Menos mal que el espectador se dio cuenta de esto y obligó a un lavado de cara a la Serie A, en la que no solo importa ganar por 1 a 0 sino que el espectador que va todos los fines de semana quiere ver futbol, acciones bonitas, regates, y espectaculo y no una faltita cada 2 pases, para interrumpir el juego rival.

There's game played on Sunday, can't remember the team,he just came back from injury and it was like 5 minutes into the 1st half on the left flank and defender boots him between the legs and he was taken off on stretcher. 11 year old me was devastated I had food prepared sat down waiting on game to kick off at 2pm, when you're up 7am on weekends with paper route Sunday!
