An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.

I know you guys HATE the idea of studded leather, but something you may not've considered is the possibility that the armor that's typically refered to as studded leather is actually a brigandine that's made using leather instead of fabric (since leather is specially treated animal hide, I consider it different from fabric). Just a thought for you guys to consider.
@@ezrafaulk3076 that is the general consensus these days- that "studded leather" is a misunderstanding of Brigandines.
So wait, Metatron has a blue brigandine, Shad has red, Matt Easton has black, and Skallagrim has green? It's the Mighty Medieval Power Rangers!
We’re missing the Pink and Yellow. Although, they were female.
@@kokofan50 they would be Skall’s wife and Metatron’s girlfriend :D

What about the White Ranger? One of us has to fill the breach lads.

The Power Rangers of HEMA
Funny that you mention that, bc as I watch this video youtube is recomending videos of the other channels you mentioned where the dudes wear their brigandines in the thumbnail, so it's impossible to miss the reference.

blue and yellow is a criminally underrated color combo, this is the best looking armor ive seen
It wasn't even all that uncommon if you could afford it. In Netflix is a documentary where they make a plate armor from scratch that's based on the armor that was used by one of the knights of Queen Elizabeth. And that armor was colored blue and had decorations made of gold

Okay, enough spying on Metatron. I've subbed, because that was a very well made video. The music volume appropriately set for different uses, the cut scenes and inserted photos with Meta's well-articulated commentary constantly there. Very well done. A blue so bright and vibrant it'll blind your enemies! Truly worthy of a nobleman.
That armor looks so gorgeous. Amazing work by everyone involved, and the royal blue is just the perfect cherry on top! I think I would go for something similar. I would much prefer visibility and mobility over being an enclosed walking tank.

Congrats on the new brigandine, looks lovely and i also love the colour choice aswell
I guess you Shad and Matt are brigandine buddies now.😀
it is finally time
Brigandine for me is the natural evolution of the Roman segmentata. Therefore it's my armour of choice, together with simetrical plate shoulders and an open face morrion helmet.
Can I just say Metatron, I like (some would say love) the way you're going full out nerd (meant in a good way) when showing us the armor. It is a beautiful piece and you can sense the fact that you're proud of it when you show it off - I absolutely love your vibe, man. Keep these armor reviews coming!
Oh I see the studs, this must be studded leather, then.
Nice. I find it interesting that you have Blue Brigandine this time while Shad has red one. Consider I see a lot of red in Roman clothings.
Roman? Come on, man. Wake up and smell the 16th century. You're so last millennium.
@@dwaneanderson8039 What can I say? Nostalgia? ;)
Well the Emperors butt boys were in black and purple. And you had the auxiliaries in only the gods knows what half the time in the days of Rome. So who knows maybe blue worked it's way in somewhere.
@@clothar23 My original comment was a half joke but man I am glad I made that joke which leads to your comment. Which I learned something for sure. THanks

Love the brigandine and the choice of that lovely blue with the brass accents is absolutely class!! Great choice, lookin good!!
Are you gonna do a video about Men at Arms any time soon?
I had an idea of an OC for a fantasy I'm working on wearing brigandine made with a cowboy shirt being the backing. Does this sound interesting?
Why not? Sounds interesting. It might look like a wild-west version of Mamluk Karkal or Kazaghand.
Very nice brigandine, congratulations with the acquisition :) It's been my favourite armour type for 35 years or so.
I have to say that the brigandine just looks really great. Between this video and Shad’s I’ve really come to appreciate it for its looks and function.
Hello there
Hi
General Kenobi
Who wore it better? Shad or Raff?
Raff, the tri-rivit and hour glass shape makes the look
Amazing brigandine, one of my favorite pieces of armor.
There definitely a lot of higher class brigandines, we find ones covered with velvets an silks while riveted with silver nails. And then there the design, the number an patten of the rivets, the lapping of the plates in both vertical an horizontal planes, the dishing of the wast plates.
Brigandine is absolutely gorgeous However, and i must say it since it hits the eyes so hard GLOVES
Gotta admit, his brigandine is better than shad's
Lol. Yeah. Not even in the same ballpark ^^ Shad fraking pauldron edges are bulging out instead of carving in and the whole thing has no shape at all.
Brigandine armour is my favourite armour. It's so practical to wear and use. You made a great choice.
I'm currently building a brigandine cuirass for my suit of armor. I would like to mention that brigandines can also be made out of linen (which is what i'm doing), leather, wool, or cotton. These natural fabrics were the most probable materials used to make brigandines. There's also many different variations of styles of brigandines. The reason the cloth is on the outside and the plates are on the inside was because the fabric on the outside helps sinch down the plates and lock them in place. The fabric also allows you to further stylize the look of each individual brigandine.
Lol any of the commentators didnt finished the video lol.
13:05 Typical Italian, more concerned with fashion than staying alive. Versace coffin ofc
I like when you call out Shad! Makes me want to watch more of both you videos.
Thank you person who liked this. This did remind me to watch one of each of their videos.
As you can already imagine the color on that device is stunning!
shad matt now rafaelo, it seems that this is the new fashion trend
That Tekken artwork just behind you is so classy! I just love this kind of Easter eggs.
I'm glad you went over points. That's how I've been attaching my shoulders to my maile for years. I just been using paracorde.
Yeah that brass pops beautifully, its was the first thing I thought and im glad it was a personal choice and handmade for you, very nice
To clean your mail just spray it with some degreaser, scrub it with a brush then rinse it off & dry it in a 100 degree oven for a few minutes. Ian LaSpins from Knyght Errant channel does keep his mail & armor oiled which I believe he has stated as a common practice throughout history.
Love the brass rivets and hardware. Another brass/bronze/copper lover here, i love how it changes color and darkens as it ages
Always loved how the Brigandine looks! Classy!
I love how the color shifts. Looks great, and provides good contrast against the copper alloy.
Metatron you're a real blessing to all medieval and ancient history lovers, and it's even better given that you provide content for free! i've seen a lot of people look at brigandines and similar armor and think it to be just a fancy shirt. The same bias has been mistakenly popularized for example in the case of other medieval troops like Janissaries.
That is a beautiful brigandine! The color choice is exquisite and it looks great alone, as well as with the plate harness.
Very interesting, I didn't know about the tinning. Also, absolutely fabulous armor and the suit to go with it.
That was really good about mentioning the weight distribution and having it on your hips as much as possible.
I've been watching a lot of videos about brigandine. You reminded me of some details I want in my novel. Thanks. BTW, your shell is gorgeous. Enjoy.

Great vid, in the end, the brigandine is probably what you’re wearing for an unexpected fight but likely trouble and armor you’re wearing protects you.
That is a beautiful and elegant set of armour there. I too love the look of a brigandine.
